Who is it for?

The course is for high potential managers for international business and leadership roles. It is for those with a hands-on approach, wanting to learn intensively and gain global perspectives, and cross-sector knowledge. The client-facing side of the programme is particularly relevant for those wanting to engage with real business challenges, influence career direction and boost their management profile.

Objectives

The MSc in Health Management provides strategic insights and business skills for those working across the worldwide health sector. The focus is on innovation and implementation with client-facing learning emphasising forward thinking.

Learning on the course is interactive, developing student’s business awareness, leadership and management capabilities; skills in project management and working in multi-disciplinary teams.

Throughout the course students engage in client-facing activities applying taught health management skills in management consultancy, internships, technology transfer and commercialisation projects.

Practical and relevant industry discussions are born from an international student body, working across different management and professional backgrounds, alongside speakers from the professional and scientific communities who promote practical industry relevant discussion and insights.

The course aims to enable students to engage in cross-sector and multi-disciplinary working, improve their team working abilities and client facing skills to achieve careers at the highest level within the international health sector.

Placements

The MSc Health Management includes placements, projects, and internship opportunities.

Health management consultancy is a placement that is part of the academic requirement of the course. Consultancies address a wide range of issues: strategy development, operational efficiency, new technologies and business start-ups. Consultancy teams are directed by the client, and facilitated and supported by the MHM academic team.

Technology transfer and marketisation projects provide opportunities for training and mentoring in commercialisation, on-the-job learning in multi-disciplinary teams and in some cases the opportunity to join a start-up management team.

Internship opportunities are available through the MHM Intern Development Programme. This offers opportunities with some of the most influential healthcare organisations in London. Internships are three-month periods of work experience, and opportunities to leverage career experience and direction. These are in the winter and spring semesters, as the health management consultancy placement is completed in the summer semester.

Academic facilities

The MSc Health Management is based in City’s Franklin Building close to the City of London, the School of Health Sciences, and Cass Business School.

As an international city and global health centre, London is an outstanding location for health management studies. Major international corporations are headquartered in London, as well as healthcare think tanks, and policy institutes. It is the centre of the national health service (NHS) for England, and the largest strategic health authority in the United Kingdom. This reflects in the range of placements, projects, and internships available on the course.

The Bradford MPH is designed for those looking to move into public health, policy or community development at a senior level, and is suitable for candidates from diverse undergraduate study backgrounds and / or professional experience. The programme retrains students into future healthcare leaders who understand health policy, community change, human behaviour change, or health service design.

The Bradford MPH addresses the central practice dilemma for public health today – how to address the challenges of an ageing society suffering from increasing and multiple chronic diseases in a context of standstill or diminishing resources.

The programme develops strategic leaders with a comprehensive, analytical and critical understanding of the wider determinants of population health and well-being. The programme places emphasis on leadership and strategic thinking, developed through comprehensive qualitative and quantitative research, analysis and evaluation.

Graduates will be equipped to address contemporary Public Health challenges such as changing health demographics, health inequalities, problems of access, quality, and continuity of care, and ageing and end of life care. It will help healthcare professionals to find creative policy solutions and implement tailored practice-interventions. Graduates will be change agents identifying ways to address health problems but also to innovate by building on community and health service assets to enhance the quality of life for millions of people in a safe, ethical and cost effective way.

The programme is be tailored to the demographic and epidemiological challenges of contemporary urban societies - the diseases of affluence and ageing, and the marginalized and vulnerable populations produced by these kinds of settings. The focus on infectious disease management and international health, though necessarily addressed in our curriculum, will not receive concentrated focus as it does in so many other MPH programmes in the UK.

MPH students will have access to the new DHEZ Academic Building. This centre, opening in 2017, provides patient services in pathology, optometry, physiotherapy, and community pharmacy. It also houses a health promotion unit specialising in ageing and end of life care issues, and an evaluation and trials unit designed to evaluate new health technologies designed by businesses.
There are also innovative partnerships with primary health/GP providers as well as new mental health promotion programmes (e.g. Recovery Colleges) that students will access either in demonstration events or within actual teaching modules that encourage students to meet with the actual academic researchers and innovators behind these programmes.

The academic team behind the programme include University of Bradford 50th Anniversary Chair Professor Allan Kellehear, and a transdisciplinary development team including the School of Pharmacy and School of Engineering at the University of Bradford.
The programme is offered on a full and part-time to accommodate the needs of professionals working in industry. The programme can be studied over 12 months full time, or two years part time (up to five years by credit accumulation).

Professional Accreditation

The programme has been mapped onto the Faculty of Public Health syllabus for the Part A examinations of the Faculty of Public Health and up to Level 7 of the Public Health Skills and Career Framework (Public Health Resource, 2008.) Health Care Management Course Structure

Lectures are interactive with students encouraged to contribute their own experience of working in health care and related settings. In addition to lectures course modules include workshops, group discussions, team exercises and student led presentations.

Full-time students will study for 13 months, attending taught modules from October to Easter (part one). Part two is undertaken through the completion of a dissertation which must be submitted by 30th September of the same year.

Part-time students will study the part one modules one day a week over two years (Typically in year one students attend October to Easter on Tuesdays and in year two October to December on Thursdays. Year two January to Easter is modular and the day of attendance will depend on the module selected.), Dissertations must be submitted by 30th September of the third year.

The MSc Health Care Management comprises two parts.

Part one is taught through five compulsory modules and a choice of two optional modules.

Part two requires completion of a dissertation - This independent directed module can only be taken on successful completion of all of the taught modules.

Both state and non-state actors grapple with how best to promote the health of communities and populations, including the most effective strategies for preventing disease, ensuring efficient and high quality health care, and reducing health inequalities.

These challenges extend beyond the traditional domain of the health sector, requiring engagement with economic and social policy and a range of non-state actors including third sector organisations, commercial interests and international agencies.

The MSc in Health Policy is designed for individuals interested in a wide range of health-related roles including government and international agencies, health advocacy, health administration and health care delivery, consultancies, advisory roles, the commercial sector, and health-related research. Within the programme there is scope for you to specialise in either health systems or health inequalities, or to follow a broad policy stream.

The Health Systems stream is ideal for those seeking to work in health care policy, planning or management, in either the public or private sectors. It will expose you to different models of health care financing, purchasing and delivery, equipping them to engage with key contemporary challenges and debates including how to achieve sustainable health care financing, the role of the state in health care, the appropriate mix of public and private provision, and how best to achieve the goals of equity, efficiency and quality in health care delivery.

This stream is particularly suited to those interested in working in policy, advocacy and research settings with a focus on health equity.

You may also elect to follow a broad policy stream within the MSc Health Policy, rather than specialising in health systems or health inequalities. This stream equips you with an understanding of how health policy fits within broader approaches to social and economic policy, and is particularly suitable for individuals wanting to work in public policy, advocacy or research.

Our students come from countries at all levels of economic development and from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, with many using the MSc as an investment to develop their careers or move into a more policy-focused role. While the programme has a strong policy focus, it also includes an academic orientation so is good preparation for further research at PhD level.

The MSc programme is situated within the Global Public Health Unit, which is located in University’s School of Social and Political Science rather than a medical school. About the department

The School for Health was established within the University of Bath in 2003, to centralise the high profile research and teaching in the health-related disciplines already taking place throughout the university, so creating a single entity through which links with the health sector at national and international level can be channelled, co-ordinated and developed.

In 2010 the School joined the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and became the Department for Health, providing excellent opportunities for academic teaching and research collaborations with other departments, such as Psychology and Social & Policy Sciences. The Department's postgraduate teaching and research programmes now form part of the Faculty's new Graduate School, also launched in 2010, providing postgraduate students with dedicated support and a strong community in which to base their studies - whether on campus or by distance learning.

In keeping with government initiatives surrounding population health and more general public concerns, the Department divides its activities between two main pillars: Healthcare and Population Health – one focuses on the NHS, healthcare and health services research and the other focuses on population health, healthy living, sport & physical activity and tobacco control; each of these groups, in turn, contain both teaching programmes and research activities. Furthermore, there is a bridging spine between both pillars and which houses the Professional Doctorate in Health, Research in Health Practice and the administrative, finance, learning & teaching development, marketing and support activities of the Department.

- Population health

Historically, health policy has focused almost exclusively on sickness services provided by agencies such as the National Health Service. Although this focus on healthcare remains hugely important, it is increasingly complemented by aspirations to improve the health of the population by tackling the social determinants of health such as poverty and pollution and by encouraging people to adopt health promoting behaviours such as healthy diets and increased physical activity and to stop health damaging ones such as smoking. There is also growing national and international concern that improvements in health should be fairly distributed by reducing health inequalities. The Department for Health organises its work related to population health improvement in three main ways. Much the largest element in the population health portfolio is related to sport, health and exercise science, but the School attaches growing importance to tobacco control and health inequalities.

- Healthcare

The Department’s expertise in Healthcare focuses on innovation in the design, delivery, organization, and evaluation of healthcare interventions. We have a particular emphasis on disabling and distressing, long term or life-limiting conditions, such as chronic pain, stroke, dementia, rheumatic disease, and severe mental health problems. Current research activity involves collaborations with NHS colleagues in Bath at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases – RNHRD, the Royal United Hospital, the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Care Trust, the Pan Bath & Swindon Primary Care Research Consortium and RehabNET.

The increasing burden of chronic illness is one of the greatest challenges facing health systems globally. In the UK, approximately 18 million people live with a long term or chronic condition and this number is expected to double by 2030. Approximately 80% of GP consultations, 60% of days spent in hospital and two thirds of all emergency hospital admissions are associated with chronic conditions (Department of Health 2004).

Managing long term and chronic conditions currently accounts for almost 70% of the NHS budget and these costs are projected to increase significantly given the ageing population and escalating risk factors such as obesity and inactivity.

Long term and chronic conditions can have profound and far reaching implications on all aspects of peoples’ lives and can present patients (and families) with a spectrum of needs.

People living with a long term or chronic condition require support, care and rehabilitation from a wide range of professionals in health, social and voluntary care sectors. In addition, effective health promotion, prevention, self-care and self-management will help ensure that chronic illnesses are avoided wherever possible and that people are more informed to safely and effectively manage their health and wellbeing.

This requires complex responses over extended periods of time, coordinated, proactive and collaborative input from the health, social care and voluntary sectors, patients, carers and lay personnel (as in the Expert Patient Programme). These need to be optimally embedded with systems which actively promote and support sustainable stakeholder collaboration and patient empowerment.

Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management Course Structure

The MSc Long Term and Chronic Conditions is designed to be both multi-disciplinary and inter-professional and thereby mirror long term and chronic condition management within the National Health Service (NHS) and government initiatives.

This course is structured as either a one year full-time or three year part-time modular taught Master's degree. The core structure is based around a holistic approach to long term and chronic conditions management, coupled with research.

The Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management programme offer students the flexibility to choose a “bespoke” path that enables them to develop personally and professionally relevant qualifications with a range of optional modules on offer.

Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management students can ‘drill down’ within their specialist area, for example, health promotion, leadership or cancer rehabilitation.

Career Prospects

Current and previous Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management students have roles as nurses, physiotherapists, podiatrists, Occupational Therapists, chiropractors, physicians and health science graduates.

Many have secured new roles in healthcare whilst studying or on completion of the programme, and others have or are considering progressing to doctoral level studies or further professional qualifications.

Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management students have presented work at national conferences and have published work or are in the process of doing so.

Staff Expertise

Programme Director, Dr Tessa Watts, has expertise in supporting self-management and has completed the Health Foundation’s Advanced Development Programme for Practitioners. Tessa is also co-chair of the Chronic Conditions Research group in the College of Human and Health Sciences at Swansea University, and publishes primarily in the areas of cancer, palliative care and healthcare education.

Dr Sherrill Snelgrove has expertise in chronic pain management. Sherrill is co-chair of the Chronic Conditions Research group, alongside Tessa, and publishes in the area of chronic pain management.

Dr Jaynie Rance is a chartered Health Psychologist with particular expertise in lifestyle behaviour change.

Our contribution towards more effective health management in countries with developing healthcare systems comes through teaching, research, consultancy and practical relationships with the health sector in Africa, the Middle East and South East Asia.

The course is characterised by an emphasis on practical skills informed by theoretical insights and managerial understanding. Students from over 150 countries have attended the course and come to the programme with existing experience of the health service and or hospital management.

The overall aim of the course is to produce knowledgeable, competent senior managers with good interpersonal skills to operate efficiently and effectively in their health services.

The course objectives are to:

• Explore a broad overview of the historical organisational studies and the various contributory schools of thought
• Further develop the participants self-awareness of their own abilities and to foster personal and professional growth in self and others

Learning and teaching will be facilitated by a team of highly qualified and academic staff from within the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health who have relevant subject expertise in business, health and social care and management and leadership
Interprofessional learning across a range of modules, in which students will learn alongside their peers on other health and social care related MSc programmes in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health.

As part of the programme, students will complete the Global Professional Development module which has been developed in collaboration with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) affording students who meet the CMI evidence requirements a Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership and a Level 7 Award in Professional Consulting. Successful completion of the module will also enable students to apply for Chartered Manager status via the qualified route.

This programme deals with the management, planning and policy issues facing providers of health services in countries with developing health systems. It will help you acquire the skills necessary for building new health services and improving existing ones.

You’ll learn to:

  • take a proactive role in problem-solving, critically reviewing evidence and arriving at informed decisions
  • communicate, plan and manage tasks independently and as part of a team
  • review policies, situations and issues in the field of health management, planning and policy-making, with particular reference to government and NGO sectors.

On this programme you have the opportunity to take part in a one-week study visit to Geneva, attending workshops and meetings with World Health Organization staff and visits to other organisations, such as the United Nations, Red Cross, World Vision, Médecins Sans Frontières, International Hospital Federation and the World Council of Churches.

Some modules include opportunities to visit health facilities in Leeds and discuss health management issues with managers.

The Health Management, Planning and Policy programme is aimed at policy-makers, planners and managers at national/regional/state and district levels in countries with developing healthcare systems. They could be working in:

  • national ministries at both senior and middle levels
  • NGOs and international organisations
  • training in education and research institutions.

The programme has been taught at Leeds for almost 30 years and there is now a large, established alumni network of health managers and planners holding senior positions around the world. It is run by the Nuffield Centre for International Health and Development, a WHO Collaborating Centre, based in the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences.

Learning and teaching

Under the guidance of academic tutors who have all worked in resource-limited settings, you develop core skills and knowledge early in the programme, which you build on with your chosen modules in specialist fields of public health, health policy, planning and management. Your dissertation gives you the opportunity to plan, initiate, execute and complete a substantial piece of independent research, with support and guidance.

The programme introduces essential learning skills for postgraduate level study, with particular emphasis on the challenges facing those returning to study.

You’ll learn through a mixture of lectures, seminars and group work. Some study sessions use the University's computer resources, with support for students less familiar with information technology. You have access to electronic copies of all teaching materials through our Virtual Learning Environment.

You’ll be able to use University facilities for independent study, such as computing facilities and the Health Sciences library, with its extensive collection of online journals.

Our students often benefit from the international learning environment on our International Health and Development programmes, where you learn and discuss with fellow-health professionals from a range of countries and professional backgrounds.

Assessment

Each module is assessed through a combination of written coursework, presentations and assignments.

The 10,000-word dissertation, on a topic of your choice, relevant to your work context, also contributes significantly to your assessment (MSc only).

Career opportunities

Graduates from the programme have gone on to work with ministries of health, international organisations, NGOs, universities, consulting firms and private health providers. For example our graduates work in Médecins Sans Frontières, the Red Cross, Save the Children and the World Health Organisation at country, region and district levels.
