Objectives

The MSc in Health Management provides strategic insights and business skills for those working across the worldwide health sector. The focus is on innovation and implementation with client-facing learning emphasising forward thinking.

Learning on the course is interactive, developing student’s business awareness, leadership and management capabilities; skills in project management and working in multi-disciplinary teams.

Throughout the course students engage in client-facing activities applying taught health management skills in management consultancy, internships, technology transfer and commercialisation projects.

Practical and relevant industry discussions are born from an international student body, working across different management and professional backgrounds, alongside speakers from the professional and scientific communities who promote practical industry relevant discussion and insights.

The course aims to enable students to engage in cross-sector and multi-disciplinary working, improve their team working abilities and client facing skills to achieve careers at the highest level within the international health sector.

Academic facilities

The MSc Health Management is based in City's Franklin building, close to the School of Health Sciences, Cass Business School and major centres of medical leadership.

As an international city and global health centre, London is an outstanding location for health management studies. Major international corporations are headquartered in London, as well as healthcare think tanks, and policy institutes. It is the centre of the national health service (NHS) for England, and the largest strategic health authority in the United Kingdom. This reflects in the range of placements, projects, and internships available on the course.

Placements

The MSc Health Management includes placements, projects, and internship opportunities.

Health management consultancy is a placement that is part of the academic requirement of the course. Consultancies address a wide range of issues: strategy development, operational efficiency, new technologies and business start-ups. Consultancy teams are directed by the client, and facilitated and supported by the MHM academic team.

Technology transfer and marketisation projects provide opportunities for training and mentoring in commercialisation, on-the-job learning in multi-disciplinary teams and in some cases the opportunity to join a start-up management team.

Internship opportunities are available through the MHM Intern Development Programme. This offers opportunities with some of the most influential healthcare organisations in London. Internships are three-month periods of work experience, and opportunities to leverage career experience and direction. These are in the winter and spring semesters, as the health management consultancy placement is completed in the summer semester.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is provided by leading academics in the fields of business and the health care sector as well as respected guest speakers from the health industry and scientific community who join us to share experiences, and insights on future trends across the health sector.

Course delivery is approximately:

The assessment strategy reflects the management task, with a wide range of assessments allowing flexibility to tailor business knowledge to career needs. Collaborative group assessments emphasise communication and influencing skills as well as providing opportunities to address larger inter-connected challenges. Written assignments emphasise the principles of management and the core business functions and develop skills in organisation analysis and preparing business reports. Exams focus on specific applied skill sets for managers and leaders.

The health management consultancy project embodies the client-facing emphasis of the course, and the approach to assessment.

Modules

The MSc Health Management comprises seven modules and a 12-15,000 word health sector dissertation.

The emphasis is on practical and applied business skills, looking across the health sector. The outlook is international. From health services to pharma, to management consultancy, the course develops a wide range of industry relevant business skills.

There are opportunities to participate in technology transfer and commercialisation projects. A health management consultancy project applies MHM skills in a client-facing project. The Intern Development Programme offers further opportunities to apply learning.

An additional requirement for the MSc Public Health (all streams) is some evidence of ability in mathematics, post-16 year education. Preference will also be given to applicants with relevant work experience.

Any student who does not meet the minimum entry requirement above but who has relevant professional experience may still be eligible for admission. Qualifications and experience will be assessed from the application.

Objectives

By the end of this stream students should be able to demonstrate ability to apply knowledge of the core disciplines of public health, consisting of statistics; epidemiology; health economics; and social research, to real global health problems. In addition, students will be able to:

- analyse the principles, structure and functions of health systems, including their financial, organisational and policy-making processes and systems

- critically assess and apply a range of key management concepts and functions in a range of health care settings

- appreciate the role and contribution of economic theory, organisational theory and approaches to management in the field of health care

- show competence in critically evaluating and communicating research evidence

- apply knowledge of effective team-working and communication skills to solve problems and achieve specific goals

Master of Public Health (MPH)

The UBC Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program, established in 2008 as part of the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH), is a practicum-based program which is normally completed in two years (three academic terms and one term devoted to a practicum). MPH training integrates epidemiology; biostatistics; the social, biological and environmental determinants of health locally and globally; disease prevention and health systems policy and management. We offer our students a solid grounding in epidemiological methods and quantitative analysis, a rigorous curriculum with a wide range of core, required and elective public health courses, faculty who are leaders in public health research and practice, and hands-on training through the 12-week field practicum. MPH course requirements can be completed as part of a traditional, on-campus educational experience or can be completed in a Distributed Learning (DL) format, where courses are scheduled over three weekends during the semester.

The MPH can also be combined with the Master of Science in Nursing or the Diploma in Dental Public Health. Our aim is to create leaders in public health who can turn evidence into practice and improve the health of populations.

What makes the program unique?

The UBC MPH program is one of two in Canada that is available in two educational delivery formats. There is the traditional, classroom-based curriculum where students come to campus weekly to attend courses and the Distributed Learning (DL) format where students come to campus over three weekends during the semester. The DL format provides working public health professionals and remotely located professionals across B.C. and Canada the opportunity to obtain their MPH degree without interrupting their careers.

Students are also able to schedule their practicum any term after completing their first-year required courses. This adds considerable program flexibility and allows students to take advantage of practica opportunities throughout their second year. Our students have completed practica placements in local, provincial and federal health agencies, not-for-profit, academic and global health organizations (e.g., BC Centre for Disease Control, Alberta Health Services, World Health Organization, BC Children's Hospital, City of Vancouver etc.).

Master of Public Health and Diploma in Dental Public Health (MPHDPH)

This combined non-clinical, non-thesis program allows students to advance their knowledge in dental public health, an area of dentistry focused in promoting oral health as well as preventing and controlling oral and dental diseases. The program encompasses education, fieldwork, and public service components that contribute to the health and sociocultural progress of Canadians. The curriculum is ingrained in critical thinking and evidence-based practice combining a broad spectrum of courses from the UBC School of Population and Public Health and the Faculty of Dentistry. The fieldwork experience comes in the format of a practicum involving community participation and research practice at local, national or international partnering organization. The practicum focuses on the assessment of the oral health needs of the community, specially the marginalized and disadvantaged; development and implementation of oral health policy; and provision of programs and services that address oral health issues of people with special needs, including not limited to First Nations, intravenous drug users, immigrants and refugees, and low income/working poor.

What makes the program unique?

This graduate program is the only in Canada to be course-based and to offer two degrees, a Masters in Public Health combined with a Diploma in Dental Public Health. The array of faculty members teaching the didactic courses at the School of Population and Public Health and at the Faculty of Dentistry brings a diversity of expertise, experience and knowledge in the field of public health. The not-for-profit organizations and community connections enable students to have access to specific resources and hands-on opportunities that are ideal to the practice of dental public health. British Columbia in particular plays a unique role in dental public health in Canada via its five health authorities that currently have various dental public health initiatives targeting low-income families, pregnant women and Aboriginal Peoples, specifically within the First Nations Health Authority. The graduate students from this combined program can collaborate with these authorities via course work and fieldwork activities.

Master of Public Health and Master of Science in Nursing (MPH/MSN)

The Master of Public Health and Master of Science in Nursing is a unique dual degree program offered at the University of British Columbia. This program is jointly offered by the School of Population and Public Health and the School of Nursing.

Nurses constitute the largest group of professionals in the public health work force. The MPH/MSN joint degree program will produce advanced practice public health nurses who have integrated knowledge and training in epidemiology, biostatistics, health service management, population-focused nursing interventions, policy development, research, and leadership skills and are capable of applying them to a diverse range of public health issues in interdisciplinary environments.

The MPH degree is currently the most widely recognized professional credential for leadership in public health, while the MSN provides advanced practice, nursing management, and research skills for supporting public health nurse leaders, and evaluating public health nursing practice. In addition, nurses in the MPH/MSN program will have access to a variety of courses in either School that address core competencies as defined by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Health Care Management Course Structure

Lectures are interactive with students encouraged to contribute their own experience of working in health care and related settings. In addition to lectures course modules include workshops, group discussions, team exercises and student led presentations.

Full-time students will study for 13 months, attending taught modules from October to Easter (part one). Part two is undertaken through the completion of a dissertation which must be submitted by 30th September of the same year.

Part-time students will study the part one modules one day a week over two years (Typically in year one students attend October to Easter on Tuesdays and in year two October to December on Thursdays. Year two January to Easter is modular and the day of attendance will depend on the module selected.), Dissertations must be submitted by 30th September of the third year.

The MSc Health Care Management comprises two parts.

Part one is taught through five compulsory modules and a choice of two optional modules.

Part two requires completion of a dissertation - This independent directed module can only be taken on successful completion of all of the taught modules.

The MSc Health Policy will develop your understanding of, and critical engagement with, key challenges in health policy. Both state and non-state actors grapple with how best to promote the health of communities and populations, including the most effective strategies for preventing disease, ensuring efficient and high quality health care, and reducing health inequalities.

These challenges extend beyond the traditional domain of the health sector, requiring engagement with economic and social policy and a range of non-state actors including third sector organisations, commercial interests and international agencies.

The MSc in Health Policy is designed for individuals interested in a wide range of health-related roles including government and international agencies, health advocacy, health administration and health care delivery, consultancies, advisory roles, the commercial sector, and health-related research. Within the programme there is scope for you to specialise in either health systems or health inequalities, or to follow a broad policy stream.

The Health Systems stream is ideal for those seeking to work in health care policy, planning or management, in either the public or private sectors. It will expose you to different models of health care financing, purchasing and delivery, equipping them to engage with key contemporary challenges and debates including how to achieve sustainable health care financing, the role of the state in health care, the appropriate mix of public and private provision, and how best to achieve the goals of equity, efficiency and quality in health care delivery.

The MSc programme is situated within the Global Public Health Unit, which is located in University’s School of Social and Political Science rather than a medical school. Health care management encompasses a broad field of practice that is continuing to grow in tandem with the growth of the health care industry and the challenges it faces in terms of financial sustainability, increasing complexity, greater consumer expectations, including accountability for safety and quality.

As a result management roles in health care are also expanding from the traditional senior and mid-level administrative roles to clinicians taking on increasing management tasks. The current Master of Health Services Management, located within the Department of Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine, primarily focuses on this latter market and in particular the needs of clinicians in the domestic market who seek background knowledge to assist them take on these roles. This new Masters of Health Administration will primarily target the general health care administration market and have an international focus. While developed from the existing Master of Health Service Management, this course will strengthen the general management component through partnership with the Faculty of Business & Economics who will deliver one third of the units.

Course structure

The course is structured in 12 units.

You will gain knowledge and skills in a broad range of areas that are relevant to management work in general health care administration and public health.

You will develop an understanding of the management within health care and public health organisations, basic accounting principles, use of economic tools, marketing, national health systems and health policy theory and development, biostatistics as applied to public health and management studies, key concepts of epidemiology, legal principles related to health care, health systems and health sector reforms, quantitative and qualitative research methods used in public health and improving the quality of care and patient safety.

The course adopts an adult learning approach, encouraging self-directed learning independent research and enquiry, reflection from practice, and peer learning with guidance from experienced academics in their respective fields.

You have the option to work towards the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrator's Fellowship, as the course is accredited by the Australasian College of Health Service Management (ACHSM).

Alternative qualifications

The course is modular, so you will study the essential core modules and then be able to choose one of four pathways to match your previous experience, future ambitions, and if you wish to study full-time or part-time.

During the course you will explore the environments and social conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age in relation to health, and the factors that influence our health behaviours.

You will have the opportunity to combine your health promotion study with complementary disciplines by choosing relevant modules from the Brighton Business School and Brighton and Sussex Medical School.

The course will benefit you if you are working in a role with a health promotion component and want to deepen your knowledge, or if you want to develop skills for working in a public health-related field. The masters award

You need to earn a total of 180 credits for the masters award, consisting of six 20-credit taught modules and a 60-credit dissertation. Twenty-credit modules have approximately 30 hours' classroom-based lecturer contact or group work and we expect this to be backed up by approximately 170 hours of individual study and work on assignments.

Teaching and assessment

The course team are active in public health research particularly around healthy weight, inequalities, mental health, sexual health, infant feeding, diabetes prevention and young people and we provide dissertation research opportunities in these areas.

You will experience formal teaching alongside a series of extracurricular seminars both within the school and through forums such as the Brighton and Sussex Universities Food Network, or the Global Health Network which operate across University of Brighton, Brighton and Sussex Medical School and University of Sussex.

The assessment and teaching methods are varied, including problem based learning in response to public health triggers, and assessments by presentation, vivas as well as formal written critical reports.

Dissertation

The dissertation consists of a literature review, small-scale prime research or a work-based learning project.

You will be supported through your dissertation via monthly optional discussion groups in addition to formal dissertation supervision. If you are working, the dissertation provides an opportunity to conduct a work-based learning project (if you wish), for example evaluating or developing a particular aspect of your organisation's work from a health promotion perspective.

Our Clinical Skills and Simulation Suite is among the best equipped in the country, and is an invaluable tool for assessment and monitoring students' progress throughout the course.

You will benefit from practising nursing skills in an environment that simulates real-life professional experiences. Provided by the NHS’ South East Coast Ambulance Service, you may have access to our Simbulance, enabling you to work alongside paramedic students in an interprofessional learning environment. On board is a high fidelity mannikin with multiple uses, and a child-size mannikin for paediatric scenarios. 

Learning by simulation means you will be confident in your ability to apply your knowledge and skills in your professional life.

Careers and Employability

On graduation, you will be prepared for a career as a health promotion specialist working in public health practice in the public, not-for-profit, voluntary or commercial sector.

Our students often find employment in public health, or change their job role to include more public health, part way through their masters and may shift from full-time to part-time study to complete their MSc.

The increasing burden of chronic illness is one of the greatest challenges facing health systems globally. In the UK, approximately 18 million people live with a long term or chronic condition and this number is expected to double by 2030. Approximately 80% of GP consultations, 60% of days spent in hospital and two thirds of all emergency hospital admissions are associated with chronic conditions (Department of Health 2004).

Managing long term and chronic conditions currently accounts for almost 70% of the NHS budget and these costs are projected to increase significantly given the ageing population and escalating risk factors such as obesity and inactivity.

Long term and chronic conditions can have profound and far reaching implications on all aspects of peoples’ lives and can present patients (and families) with a spectrum of needs.

People living with a long term or chronic condition require support, care and rehabilitation from a wide range of professionals in health, social and voluntary care sectors. In addition, effective health promotion, prevention, self-care and self-management will help ensure that chronic illnesses are avoided wherever possible and that people are more informed to safely and effectively manage their health and wellbeing.

This requires complex responses over extended periods of time, coordinated, proactive and collaborative input from the health, social care and voluntary sectors, patients, carers and lay personnel (as in the Expert Patient Programme). The MSc Long Term and Chronic Conditions is designed to be both multi-disciplinary and inter-professional and thereby mirror long term and chronic condition management within the National Health Service (NHS) and government initiatives.

This course is structured as either a one year full-time or three year part-time modular taught Master's degree. The core structure is based around a holistic approach to long term and chronic conditions management, coupled with research.

The management of health and social care services in hospitals and other related facilities is changing rapidly with government, funding bodies and healthcare insurance companies demanding greater accountability and efficiencies.

Increasing complexity of the user/patient journey creates unique challenges for managers and leaders of health and social care services to respond to. Commissioning and purchasing of health related services, logistics, continuous professional development, accounting, legal and professional regulation along with increasing public scrutiny of health care systems require expert high quality strategic leadership and management functions.

This course prepares the next generation of healthcare managers, leaders and entrepreneurs to think creatively in refreshing the delivery and quality of existing health and social care services and responding to future demands.

The MBA Health Care Management with Professional Experience, is an extended full-time Masters programme with a substantive professional experience component. Within the professional experience modules, students have the option of undertaking an internship with a host organisation or, alternatively, campus-based professional experience. Internships are subject to a competitive application and selection process and the host organisation may include the University.

Internships may be paid or unpaid, and this will depend on what is being offered and agreed with the host organisation. Students who do not wish to undertake an internship or are not successful in securing an internship will undertake campus-based professional experience, which will deliver similar learning outcomes through supervised projects and activities designed to offer students the opportunity to integrate theory with an understanding of professional practice.

-Interprofessional learning across a range of modules, both within the Coventry Business School in which students will learn alongside their peers on other MBA programmes and the School of Health in which they will learn alongside their peers on other health-related Masters programmes.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will study a range of modules which provide a detailed understanding of business management combined with examination of contemporary challenges within healthcare management.

The course will feature a range of current and management theories relevant to the health and social care sectors. In addition, it will also explore multi-cultural and international dimensions of healthcare management. The programme will also develop students’ employability and entrepreneurial skills.

Specifically, the modules of study are:
-Leading Complex Healthcare Systems
-Leadership, Service Improvement and Integrated Care
-Human Resource Management
-Financial Analysis and Decision-Making
-Principles of Marketing
-Strategic Analysis
-Research Methodology, Design and Methods

Additionally, the understanding gained from these modules will be demonstrated and applied in either the university-based MBA Management Project (12 month full-time and 24 month part-time) or the MBA Postgraduate Internship Research Project undertaken with an host organisation or MBA Postgraduate Consultancy Project (18 month full-time).

You will experience learning with students from other MBA programmes within the Coventry Business School and Masters programmes within the School of Health, in addition to those specialising in healthcare management at different stages of your course.

You will be supported by a personal tutor throughout your studies and receive individual supervision whilst undertaking either the MBA Management Project or MBA Postgraduate Internship Research Project.

Graduates from this programme enter challenging and rewarding positions which come with great personal and financial rewards. Earning an MBA in Healthcare Management is an excellent way to propel your management career to higher levels in the worlds of health and social care.

The learning and development demanded by this qualification prepares its graduates well for the prospects of director level employment; be it related to a discrete service department or hospital unit, private or publically funded hospital or service or healthcare company. It enables students to develop the skill set for posts in local, regional, national or even international government policy making bodies (for example Professional Bodies, Ministries of Health, World Health Organization).

Opportunities within health related industries e.g. the pharmaceutical industry will also be relevant for some graduates.

WORK PLACEMENTS

Within the professional experience modules, students have the option of undertaking an internship with a host organisation or, alternatively, campus-based professional experience. Internships are subject to a competitive application and selection process and the host organisation may include the University.

The professional experience modules are not available to students undertaking the part-time programme.

Students enrolled onto the 12 month full-time programme will be offered the opportunity to undertake voluntary work with relevant organisations which will enable you to apply your knowledge and develop your management skills. This will be offered in the second half of your course.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR AN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

In addition to studying in the UK with other international students, you will be able to share your personal and professional experiences of health and social care systems to inform seminar discussions and provide a global perspective. You will have the opportunity to focus your MBA Management project on an international issue.

This full-time course merges the study of epidemiology, biostatistics and health research methods with public health skills.

It will suit those with both medical and non-medical backgrounds who are interested in developing their research skills and public health career.

Course lecturers are leaders in academic fields of statistics, epidemiology (chronic diseases and infectious diseases) and health services research. Guest speakers include public health professionals with experience in developing, managing and implementing interventions in public health.

You will have a unique opportunity to study three modules from the MSc in International Health Management at Imperial College Business School: Health Economics; Health Policy, Systems and Financing; and Contemporary Topics in Health Policy.

The WHO Collaborating Centre for Public Health Education and Training offers some opportunities to students on the MPH Course to visit different multilateral agencies and international organisations in Geneva, Switzerland.

Further onsite work visits are organised to support quality improvement initiatives in the local NHS Trusts, through the Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) Northwest London.

You have opportunities to undertake a summer research project with a wide range of NHS and public health organisations, global health institutions, and think-tank groups.

Streams

You have the choice of two streams:

  • Health Services and Systems Stream
  • Global Health Stream

The Health Services and Systems stream focuses on the theory and practice of health promotion and health service management. The key themes that define this stream are: quality improvement in health care, health intelligence, and population health improvement.

The Global Health stream is orientated towards training students for a Global Health career. The stream seeks to expand your understanding of the manifestations of health challenges within the context of low-and middle-income country settings, as well as the supranational governance structures and processes involved in tackling these challenges. The stream also discusses global health innovations aimed at enhancing health outcomes.

MPH students will also share a number of core modules and lectures with the MSc in Epidemiology degree.

Careers

In public health, the focus is on populations and communities rather than individual patients. There are a number of career options in research, public or government services or voluntary organisations and non-governmental organisations.

Starting from a common core, students may develop into roles ranging from public health analysts, health services researchers, communicable disease control consultants, environmental epidemiologists, health policy advisors or directors of public health.

Optional modules will offer the opportunity to gain more in-depth skill in subjects of particular interest to you, including qualitative research methods and health data management.

The final dissertation will provide the opportunity to carry out an extended piece of research to address a real public health problem, integrating the skills gained throughout the course and well-supported by experienced researchers.

How the Course works

The course is modular and can be studied over one year full-time or two years part-time.

The course has three main components:

  • Core modules relating to essential public health disciplines
  • Optional modules, allowing you to explore your individual interests
  • A dissertation, integrating the knowledge and skills gained throughout the course.

Teaching is delivered at Nottingham City Hospital’s Clinical Sciences Building, which has free transport to the University’s main campus and a Local Park and Ride car park, as well as excellent public transport links to Nottingham City centre.

Who is it suitable for?

The Masters in Public Health is ideal for individuals who

  • Work or plan to work in public health and related fields, both within the UK and in international settings; including health services, local and national government, the voluntary sector, public health and health services research, international agencies such as the World Health Organisation, and in academic research or further study.
  • have the required basic academic skills (a good level of mathematical ability is needed to undertake this programme)
  • are keen to study public health with students with diverse backgrounds and experiences
