The Master of Health Sciences (MHealSc) degree allows study at a postgraduate level across a range of health disciplines, and research experience (thesis, dissertation or project) in the student's area of specialisation.

Normally before embarking upon study within the Master of Health Sciences programme, students would first complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences (PGCertHealSc) and/or a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences (PGDipHealSc). Students are normally required to obtain a B average over their Postgraduate Diploma in order to be admitted to Masters study.

Information for new applicants

The Master of Health Sciences (MHealSc) comprises 120 points. This can be a thesis worth the entire 120 points, a 60 point dissertation and further papers to the value of 60 points, or 30 point research project and 90 points of further papers.

A 30 point research methods paper is a requirement for the Master of Health Sciences. It can be taken as a generic “unendorsed” option or as an "endorsed" option from those listed below.

Each “endorsed” option has different requirements so it is important to seek course advice before you apply. You can obtain information about each endorsement by clicking on the links below.

The Master of Health Sciences is taught from three campuses (Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington). Contact details at each campus are listed below. Alternatively, contact for guidance.

Structure of the Programme

The programme of study shall consist of either:
-Approved papers at 400-level or higher worth at least 120 points, and a thesis (120 points) embodying the results of one year of full-time or equivalent part-time supervised research.
OR
-Approved papers and other course components at 400-level or higher worth at least 240 points (at least 40 points of which will be at NZQF Level 9), including a research method paper or papers to the value of 30 points, and either a research project (30 points) or a dissertation (60 points). Where the programme includes a research project, the research methods paper must be one of the approved 800-level options.

The papers shall constitute a coherent and integrated programme, shall prepare the candidate for the research study, and shall normally include an approved research method paper or papers to the value of 30 points. With approval, papers worth up to a maximum total of 120 points which have been completed at a tertiary education institution other than the University of Otago may be credited to the programme and/or used as the basis for exemptions in terms of regulation 2(c) below.

Where the degree is to be awarded with an endorsed option in an area of specialisation the programme of study must conform to the requirements specified in the schedule for that option.

A candidate whose qualification for entry to the programme is an Honours degree or postgraduate diploma or equivalent may be exempted from some of the required papers, provided that this previous study is directly relevant to the candidate's proposed and approved programme of study, to a maximum of 120 points.

A candidate may not present a thesis which has previously been accepted for another degree. The programme of study and the topic and supervisors of the thesis shall be approved by the Programme Academic Co-ordinator (or nominee).

Other admission requirements

Applicants for admission where non-standard research methods requirements apply (i.e. for the Bioethics endorsement, or where a NZQF Level 9 research methods paper is required in the Masters’ programme, or where an exemption from a research methods requirement has been granted, or in other approved exceptional circumstances) shall normally be required to satisfy all of the following:
-Be a graduate in a health-related field or possess an appropriate health professional qualification requiring at least three years of full-time tertiary study.
-Have completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences or equivalent with grades averaging B+ or better.
-Provide evidence of ability for advanced level academic study.

Study Program

The two-year master’s program with 120 ECTS-credits consists of core courses, offered during the first three semesters, and major courses starting in the second semester. Other core courses include scientific and professional skills development. Starting in the second semester, students can choose a major, according to their interest. After the first year, students will be required to do an internship and start a research project, while the fourth (final) semester will be dedicated to completing the master thesis.

This programme aims to provide you with a firm foundation in biomedical research by enhancing your knowledge, understanding and critical awareness of the scientific method and practical experience in an area related to your interests. Taught units provide intensive training in research methodology, experimental design, statistical analyses and data interpretation. Skills training in verbal and written communication is also emphasised.

The core of the programme is an eight-month research project, conducted within one of the University of Bristol's internationally recognised research groups in either the Faculty of Health Sciences or the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences. Opportunities will be available in laboratory or clinical-based investigations.

The programme is suitable for medical, dental and veterinary students interested in pursuing a research-intensive intercalation option after three years of study. Programme structure

Unit 1: Introduction to Research Methods in Health Sciences Research (10 credits).
This unit introduces a variety of research methods used in basic and applied clinical research including: finding and reading relevant research information; presenting research results; basic statistical analysis; data interpretation; ethics; public engagement; and commercialising research.

Unit 2: Further Research Methods in Health Sciences Research (20 credits).
This unit aims to develop further knowledge and practical experience in statistical analyses, experimental design and laboratory methods and includes training in the use of a statistical software package and practical experience in several laboratory techniques.

Unit 3: Project Proposal in Health Sciences Research (20 credits).
This unit involves planning and writing a research project proposal (4500 words), which includes a literature review, aims, impact, research plan, ethical considerations, contingency plans, timetable and references.

Unit 4: Research Club in Health Sciences Research (10 credits).
This unit aims to develop your ability to present, critically evaluate and discuss scientific findings by contributing to journal clubs, attending and summarising research seminars and presenting your own research.

Unit 5: Research Project in Health Sciences Research (120 credits).
During this unit you will gain extensive experience in scientific/clinical research by conducting an independent project related to an area of interest to you. The MSc in environmental health sciences has been designed to allow graduates from a range of science and engineering disciplines to develop and extend knowledge in risk-based assessment and management of environmental influences on human health.

Environmental health is the assessment and management of environmental influences on human health. This includes the study of:
- environmental protection including control of air, water and land pollution
- food safety and hygiene including production, distribution and fitness for human consumption
- occupational health and safety including investigation and control of work-related accidents and ill health
- the built environment including homes, workplaces and public spaces

Environmental health work is important and highly worthwhile and many of our students are motivated by a desire to directly improve living and working conditions for a wide range of people.

You'll develop expertise in current methods for examining factors that affect human health, assessing and managing the risks involved, and meeting the challenges resulting from changes in the interaction between people and the environment.

The wide scope of environmental health sciences and the corresponding breadth of the degree reflect rapid technological progress. Environmental impact assessment, sustainable development, air, water and noise pollution are increasingly important and there is a pressing need for graduates with skills in these disciplines.

You’ll study

Teaching is based on a core of conventional lectures and tutorials, complemented by group projects, laboratory classes, student-led seminars and fieldwork. The programme can be studied over one year full-time, two years part-time or up to five years through Open Access.

On the full-time programme, you’ll follow a core curriculum of eight classes and four optional class. Each class is taught for two to three hours per week over eight to 12 weeks.

Following successful completion of the taught component, you’ll undertake a dissertation from June to August.

Facilities

Our laboratory facilities are well-equipped for a wide range of chemical and biological measurements. High-technological instrumentation and space are available to investigate:
- marine and freshwater quality
- air quality
- solid and hazardous wastes
- environmental microbiology

The course is delivered by staff from the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. A brief profile of some members of the academic team is provided below:
- Dr Iain Beverland is the programme manager of the MSc in Environmental Health Sciences. He has research & teaching interests in the areas of air pollution control, environmental epidemiology, exposure assessment, & public/environmental health. Current research includes study of the effects of exposure to air pollution on human health, with a focus on traffic-related air pollution in urban areas.

- Dr Tara K Beattie has expertise in the field of public health and the management of water and solid waste. Her research interests include free-living protozoa and their potential to cause human disease.

- Dr Raymond Wong has research and teaching interests in the areas of food laws (EU and UK), policies and compliance; food poisoning, contamination and prevention; and food safety management systems.

- Dr Christine Switzer specialises in contaminant fate, transport and remediation with emphases on non-aqueous phase liquids and aggressive remediation technologies.

Additional information

Staff within the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering have engaged with developing Environmental Health training in Africa for almost 20 years.

Dr Tracy Morse, a graduate from the BSc (Hons) Environmental Health programme, was a recent winner of the title Strathclyder of the Year. Dr Morse won the title for her outstanding work as Project Manager of the University's Scotland Chikwawa Health Initiative. This is a scheme funded by the Scottish Government to improve maternal health and drive down infant mortality rates in four villages in Southern Malawi. Dr Morse is the Malawi-based coordinator of all the activities of the University's Malawi Millennium Project.

Open Access

Home students can also choose to study through Open Access. This is initially a non-graduating route. You register for one module at a time and have the option to build up credits eventually leading to a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MSc. You can take up to five years to achieve the qualification.

This option is popular with students in employment, who may wish to undertake modules for Continuing Professional Development purposes.

Home students who do not meet the normal MSc entry requirements for this programme are welcome to apply through the Open Access route instead.

The programme provides a firm theoretical grounding in the scientific principles and clinical applications of translational cardiovascular medicine, as well as intensive training in research methodology, experimental design, statistical analyses, data interpretation and science communication.

Assessment and Teaching

The MSc Health Sciences programme is delivered through a broad range of learning and teaching strategies. The delivery of the programmes and their assessment will reflect the spirit of Wrexham Glyndŵr University’s Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy and in particular emphasises:

For students on a relevant pathway and who meet the specific optional module entry requirements there is also the opportunity to achieve learning that meets professional requirements for independent or supplementary prescribing, mentorship or practice teaching.

Other Admission Requirements

A candidate must satisfy one, or combination, of the following conditions:
A) An initial honours degree of Wrexham Glyndŵr University or another approved degree awarding body.
B) Equivalent overseas qualifications deemed satisfactory by the programme team
C) A non-graduate qualification which the University deems to be of satisfactory standard for the purpose of post-graduate admission.
D) Have relevant work experience at a senior level that is deemed to compensate the lack of formal qualifications and have held a position of management responsibility within the or health or social care sectors for a minimum of three years within the previous five years (this normally applies to part time home students only)

In a case where there is lack of clarity or need to gain deeper insight into a candidate’s suitability for the programme of study an informal interview with the candidate may be held, which may be undertaken via Skype or other distance communication technology.

This will allow the candidate an opportunity to provide evidence to the satisfaction of the interview panel of his/her ability to complete academic work of the required standard in the subject area and to complete successfully the scheme of study proposed.

In addition, the school has more than 40 postgraduate students in its two Royal College Residency programs: Public Health and Preventive Medicine and Occupational Medicine. The Graduate Department of Public Health Sciences at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health offers five graduate degrees, available both full-time and part-time. The MPhil/PhD in Health Sciences is an opportunity to develop your research interests and skills in a centre of excellence for health, and within research groups building the international evidence base for health and healthcare.

The programmes are three years full-time or six years part-time for a PhD, and two years full-time or four years part-time for an MPhil. They are designed to develop your academic excellence in a multidisciplinary context.

We will equip you to undertake, analyse and evaluate health research. At the same time you have the flexibility to tailor your studies to pursue your own research interests and develop the skills you need for your future career. We support a range of different methodological and disciplinary perspectives. The common theme is the rigour of the methodology and the aim of adding to the evidence base for health and healthcare.

We ask you to provide a brief research outline with your application and give some indication of the research group within which your research interest belongs.

Training

All students are initially registered for their intended award aim (ie either MPhil or PhD). However, PhD students are only provisionally registered for their PhD. There is a confirmation of registration procedure which is a progression requirement that must be successfully completed if the student is to progress on the PhD.

As part of your research degree, you will plan a subject-specific ‘research training programme’ with your supervisor to meet your individual needs and the core training requirements of the Department. All MPhil/PhD students are usually required to demonstrate skills in the following areas, normally by taking these modules:
-Health Research in Practice
-Introduction to Regression Analysis
-Epidemiology
-Systematic Reviews

Further training, generally equivalent to at least a further 40 credits, will be agreed with your academic supervisor and programme leader. Most of our MPhil and PhD students follow the multidisciplinary approach of the MSc in Applied Health Research programme.

Every student on the MSc Health Sciences negotiates his or her own combination of modules; please contact the programme administrator for an up-to-date list. Every MSc programme must include a dissertation or project management report, and it must also include research design training.

Oxford Brookes is committed to student-centred learning, with an emphasis on contracted learning activities and educational staff acting as facilitators. Our students are experienced professionals whose skills and knowledge have led them to design and undertake individual programmes of learning. Approach to assessment

Modules are assessed either by coursework or examination or both and full details are given in module guides. Each assessment is designed so that you can show that you have achieved the learning outcomes for the module and for the whole programme. Tasks and questions are set by the module leader, internally moderated (checked by another member of staff) and sent to the external examiner to ensure that they are appropriate for assessment of the module learning outcomes and that the instructions and marking criteria are clear.

This unique Masters in Applied Statistics in Health Sciences provides an opening to a career as an applied statistician, without having previously studied statistics.

The course is run in collaboration with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), an Executive Agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra). Statisticians from APHA, as well as those who have extensive experience in working with the National Health Service in Scotland, will provide lectures based around real-life problems and data from the health sciences.

Although the programme is focused on health, the skill set provided will also equip you with the necessary training to work as an applied statistician in other areas such as insurance, finance and commerce.

What you'll learn

The three compulsory modules covered in Semester 1 will equip you with fundamental probability and data analysis skills. In Semester 2 there's four compulsory modules, each focusing on a different applied element of being a statistician. The course concludes with a research project which will involve the analysis of a real-life data set.

Programme skills set
On the programme you'll acquire:
-in-depth knowledge of modern statistical methods that are used to analyse and visualise real-life data sets and the experience of how to apply these methods in a professional setting
-skills in using statistical software packages that are used in government, industry and commerce

The Centre for Population Health Sciences (CPHS) supervises postgraduate research students in a wide range of population health disciplines, including epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, health promotion, health services research, medical statistics, molecular epidemiology and sociology and on a wide range of topics including allergic and respiratory disease, clinical trial and statistics methodology, eHealth, ethnicity and health, genetic epidemiology of complex diseases, global health, palliative care and cancer, society and health and families and relationships.

A principal aim is to foster interdisciplinary research involving quantitative and qualitative approaches via effective collaboration with biomedical scientists, epidemiologists, social scientists and clinical researchers throughout the University and beyond.

Research programmes involve writing a thesis on a particular topic with specialist supervision. The curriculum will be in the general area of medicine and health sciences and may range from basic research into mechanisms of disease or methodology, clinical research, or behavioural social science research.
