The course aims to enable students to engage in cross-sector and multi-disciplinary working, improve their team working abilities and client facing skills to achieve careers at the highest level within the international health sector.

Placements

The MSc Health Management includes placements, projects, and internship opportunities.

Health management consultancy is a placement that is part of the academic requirement of the course. Consultancies address a wide range of issues: strategy development, operational efficiency, new technologies and business start-ups. Consultancy teams are directed by the client, and facilitated and supported by the MHM academic team.

Technology transfer and marketisation projects provide opportunities for training and mentoring in commercialisation, on-the-job learning in multi-disciplinary teams and in some cases the opportunity to join a start-up management team.

Internship opportunities are available through the MHM Intern Development Programme. This offers opportunities with some of the most influential healthcare organisations in London. Internships are three-month periods of work experience, and opportunities to leverage career experience and direction. These are in the winter and spring semesters, as the health management consultancy placement is completed in the summer semester.

The MSc Health Management is based in City’s Franklin Building close to the City of London, the School of Health Sciences, and Cass Business School.

This programme provides a unique opportunity for senior occupational health nurses to further develop their academic and professional skills beyond those taught for Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (OH). It will give emphasis to the theory required to manage occupational health services in complex settings, improving customer experience and enhancing professional identity in the context of occupational health management.

Graduate destinations

You can use your skills towards a successful career as an occupational health nurse manager or business owner, a clinical supervisor or an occupational health nurse educator. You may also wish to continue your education through a postgraduate degree in Occupational Health Management or a Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Occupational Health).

Other admission requirements

International applicants will need to demonstrate evidence of study at a level equivalent to the general entry requirements. These will be in accordance with NARIC Guidelines (The British Council 2007 and revised annually) and International Qualifications for entry to Higher Education (UCAS, 2007 and revised annually) as well as satisfying the English Language requirements for admission which include any of the following:

Global health issues impact at national level and require a robust public health response by governments.

Growing recognition of health inequalities, trends in globalization, patterns of travel and migration, the growing proportion of the population living with chronic illnesses, epidemics of infectious diseases, all make public health an important concern across the world. With growing demands on public health infrastructures government agencies, NGOs and other organisations all require focussed strategic management to increase their effectiveness. Funding bodies are demanding greater accountability and efficiencies, and hence the need for an MBA in Public Health Management.

Existing public health modules at Masters level are populated largely by international students. The MBA Public Health Management course aims to develop and build on this experience predominantly for international applicants, although it is open to UK applicants as well. The MSc in International Health Management is delivered both at the University of Bradford and at Dubai Knowledge Village.

The programme focuses on developing knowledge and critical understanding of the structure, organisation and sustainability of health systems internationally. It provides opportunities for multi-disciplinary learning with managers from a variety of international backgrounds.

The teaching and learning methods used in this programme include lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials, case studies featuring national and international examples, and use of a virtual learning environment. Individual tutorials will also be held either face-to-face with students, via the phone or internet.

In order to meet the learning outcomes of the programme, assessments require students to integrate theory and apply this to a consideration of health management practice internationally. Assessment methods consist of written assignments, presentations and a management project.

The Management Project module includes compulsory taught sessions and working with a supervisor from the tutorial team, on an individual tutorial basis, over a period normally between 3 to 6 months. This award-winning programme gained the Innovations in Occupational Health Award in 2011. It is led by Anne Harriss who was named Occupational Health Nurse of the Year in 2011. Anne and a programme graduate then gained the 2013 Innovations in Occupational Health. In the same year Anne achieved Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

The Workplace Health Management programme is designed for those with an interest in promoting health and safety at work including nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and managers. Applicants with a non-clinical background are eligible to enrol on the Graduate Certificate element of the programme which consists of three modules. There is a clinical element to the BSc; as one of the final modules has a clinical component.

Those who have completed either the Grad Cert will be able to seek employment in a wide diversity of settings within both the public and private sectors. In addition to gaining employment within the NHS, graduates of programmes offered by LSBU have gained employment with international airlines, the financial services sector, legal practices and manufacturing industries. Others have set up their own successful consultancies.

You will spend 50% of the course in an OH practice setting. Shared learning with other practitioners who work in the OH setting is encouraged.

The degree course consists of six modules each worth 20 credit points. Of these; one is a research module, and is taught across a range of primary care programmes. The remaining five are OH pathway specific. Some modules are available on a stand-alone basis. This is subject to availability - priority for places on these units is given to those enrolling on the entire degree course.

Teaching and learning

Each module equates to 200 hours of student effort, 36 hours of which take place in the classroom. This is supplementedwith blended learning initiatives including electronic learning activities andworkplace visits.

Teaching includes formal lectures, seminars, group work and field work activities including a risk assessment activity which takes place in the Palm House of Kew Gardens.

A variety of assessment strategies are used including essays, case studies, reports, a professional practice portfolio and one examination.

There is no placement requirement for this course.

Timetable

Full-time students attend for two days each week studying the Role of the occupational health practitioner and Assessing risk 1 on one day and Assessing risk 2 on the second day of attendance.

Part-time students attend for one day each week and join the full time students studying the Role of the occupational health practitioner and Assessing risk 1.

This course and the occupational health nursing programme recruits from a wide geographical area. Past students have travelled from as far afield as Manchester, Cornwall, Norfolk and Suffolk. In order to facilitate the travel needs of such students, the first lecture of the day is scheduled to commence at 10.00am and all lectures are completed by 5.00pm

Jo-Anne Kitney, an OH graduate and MD of Kitney Occupational Health and Safety in Brisbane, Queensland, is an honorary senior lecturer. Anne offers Skype lectures, webinars, and career coaching opportunities to our students. Prof Diana Kloss, barrister, employment tribunal judge and Chair of the Council for Work and Health, is also a frequent contributor to our programme. We offer postgraduate courses for health and social care professionals, managers and anyone planning a career in health services research.

Our graduates work in public health, the private sector, health services management, and health and social care, all over the world. They also go on to further public health training or academic research.

An international academic community

As one of the largest multi-disciplinary schools of public health and health services research in the UK, ScHARR is a rich academic community. You will be taught by world-leading experts in health economics, public health sciences, the sociology of health, health psychology, decision analysis, management sciences, epidemiology, medical statistics and information science. They include members of The Academy of Medical Sciences, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the Royal Society of Public Health. The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) rates us fourth in the UK for research power.

Our staff and students come from all over the world and offer international perspectives to all our courses.

Flexible study routes

We offer both traditional campus-based and online courses. Our high quality online courses are taught by the same expert academic staff who teach our courses in Sheffield and offer an alternative to coming to the UK. Guided by our staff, you can study at a pace that suits your personal circumstances. This can be an effective route for those who need to continue to work while they study. Postgraduate certificates and diplomas are also available.

• enable students to gain theoretical knowledge in relation to public health and health promotion, research and practice insight
• completion to MSc level further enables the student to complete a primary research study of relevance to public health and health promotion

The Public Health and Health Promotion course is mapped to the National Occupational Standards, Public Health Career Framework and contributes to attainment of practitioner and/ or specialist public health status (UKPHR).

The Public Health and Health Promotion programme covers historical background, current developments and future direction potentials of relevance in health and innovation in public health and health promotion practice.

A particular strength of the Public Health and Health Promotion course is the short observation placement module, enabling students to experience an area of practice interest as part of their development.

Students on the Public Health and Health Promotion course also undertake a primary research study as a requirement for completion to MSc qualification.

Public Health and Health Promotion Course Structure

Full-time Public Health and Health Promotion students will study two days a week (Wednesdays and Fridays) from October to April and dissertations submitted in September of the same year. Part-time Public Health and Health Promotion students will study one day a week (Wednesdays in the first year, Fridays in the second year) over two years, and dissertations are submitted in September of the third year. All modules are core and therefore required to be successfully passed, there are no optional modules available in the Public Health and Health Promotion programme.
