The proportion of Seniors is accelerating rapidly, and Seniors are expected to account for nearly one-quarter of British Columbia’s population by 2036. Currently nearly 15 per cent of the population older than 85 resides in a public or private care facility. While many services are provided in the public sector there is an increasing number and range of services for Seniors in the private and non-profit sectors as well. These demographic trends highlight the pressing need for health professionals with sector-relevant and cross-disciplinary technical skills who can create the future of Seniors care in community and institutional contexts.

The Master of Health Leadership and Policy (MHLP) in Seniors Care is an intensive one-year degree program that equips you with the skills needed to improve patient outcomes and help create the future of Seniors health care. The project-based curriculum follows the industry value chain, maintaining a strong focus on organizational models of practice that promote ethical, equitable and socially sustainable policies and practices in Seniors care. While 60 per cent of your classes will focus on your technical specialization, the remaining 40 per cent are leadership development courses that will enhance your business, communication and people skills. Delivery of the management and leadership courses are in partnership with UBC's Sauder School of Business.

What Makes The Program Unique?

The MHLP in Seniors Care is a unique graduate program that empowers you to develop the sector-relevant cross-disciplinary technical skills that are acutely needed in this field. No other Canadian institution currently offers sector-focused (rather than research-oriented) training at the graduate level. It has been developed in close collaboration with public and private sector partners, who told us they are challenged to find people with the cross-functional technical and leadership skills needed to develop innovative solutions, manage collaborative teams and lead projects.

To complement your academic studies, professional development workshops, delivered by industry leaders, are offered throughout the year-long program. These extra-curricular sessions cover a range of topics such as:
-Leadership fundamentals
-Giving and receiving feedback
-Learning how to deliver a successful pitch
-Effective presenting

The workshops also provide opportunities to network with professionals from a wide range of industries, UBC faculty and students in the MHLP and MEL programs.

Funding Sources

The Faculty of Applied Science offers a limited number of $5,000 merit-based awards to MHLP students. All applicants who submitted their application before July 1 are automatically considered for this award. You do not need to submit a separate application. The merit-based awards are given to selected applicants and only the successful recipients will be notified before the program starts in January.

Aside from the merit-based award, there no other scholarships, grants or funding offered by UBC for MHLP students.

Our graduates will be in high demand in the private and public sector. Job opportunities could include conceptualizing and leading Seniors-focused clinical programs, leading and managing services for Seniors in a range of settings, as well as proposing or analyzing policy initiatives tor Seniors care.

Full-time Public Health and Health Promotion students will study two days a week (Wednesdays and Fridays) from October to April and dissertations submitted in September of the same year. Part-time Public Health and Health Promotion students will study one day a week (Wednesdays in the first year, Fridays in the second year) over two years, and dissertations are submitted in September of the third year. All modules are core and therefore required to be successfully passed, there are no optional modules available in the Public Health and Health Promotion programme.

City’s MSc in Health Policy gives you the knowledge and tools you need to understand, analyse and influence the health policy process, and to operate within an increasingly complex policy environment.

You will analyse the social, political and economic factors that affect policy at a local, national and international level. You will explore how and where policy is made, and who the key players are; and learn how to present your ideas clearly and persuasively to a range of influential stakeholders to bring about change.

Placements

You have the opportunity to do a placement, but it is not a formal requirement of the course. We encourage you to create your own. One recent student worked within the refugee camp in Calais alongside the NGO Doctors of the World as part of her dissertation research on refugee access to health care.

The Bradford MPH is designed for those looking to move into public health, policy or community development at a senior level, and is suitable for candidates from diverse undergraduate study backgrounds and / or professional experience. The programme retrains students into future healthcare leaders who understand health policy, community change, human behaviour change, or health service design.

The Bradford MPH addresses the central practice dilemma for public health today – how to address the challenges of an ageing society suffering from increasing and multiple chronic diseases in a context of standstill or diminishing resources.

The programme develops strategic leaders with a comprehensive, analytical and critical understanding of the wider determinants of population health and well-being. The programme places emphasis on leadership and strategic thinking, developed through comprehensive qualitative and quantitative research, analysis and evaluation.

Graduates will be equipped to address contemporary Public Health challenges such as changing health demographics, health inequalities, problems of access, quality, and continuity of care, and ageing and end of life care. It will help healthcare professionals to find creative policy solutions and implement tailored practice-interventions. Graduates will be change agents identifying ways to address health problems but also to innovate by building on community and health service assets to enhance the quality of life for millions of people in a safe, ethical and cost effective way.

The programme is be tailored to the demographic and epidemiological challenges of contemporary urban societies - the diseases of affluence and ageing, and the marginalized and vulnerable populations produced by these kinds of settings. The focus on infectious disease management and international health, though necessarily addressed in our curriculum, will not receive concentrated focus as it does in so many other MPH programmes in the UK.

MPH students will have access to the new DHEZ Academic Building. This centre, opening in 2017, provides patient services in pathology, optometry, physiotherapy, and community pharmacy. It also houses a health promotion unit specialising in ageing and end of life care issues, and an evaluation and trials unit designed to evaluate new health technologies designed by businesses.
There are also innovative partnerships with primary health/GP providers as well as new mental health promotion programmes (e.g. Recovery Colleges) that students will access either in demonstration events or within actual teaching modules that encourage students to meet with the actual academic researchers and innovators behind these programmes.

The academic team behind the programme include University of Bradford 50th Anniversary Chair Professor Allan Kellehear, and a transdisciplinary development team including the School of Pharmacy and School of Engineering at the University of Bradford.
The programme is offered on a full and part-time to accommodate the needs of professionals working in industry. The programme can be studied over 12 months full time, or two years part time (up to five years by credit accumulation).

Professional Accreditation

The programme has been mapped onto the Faculty of Public Health syllabus for the Part A examinations of the Faculty of Public Health and up to Level 7 of the Public Health Skills and Career Framework (Public Health Resource, 2008.) About the department

The School for Health was established within the University of Bath in 2003, to centralise the high profile research and teaching in the health-related disciplines already taking place throughout the university, so creating a single entity through which links with the health sector at national and international level can be channelled, co-ordinated and developed.

In 2010 the School joined the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and became the Department for Health, providing excellent opportunities for academic teaching and research collaborations with other departments, such as Psychology and Social & Policy Sciences. The Department's postgraduate teaching and research programmes now form part of the Faculty's new Graduate School, also launched in 2010, providing postgraduate students with dedicated support and a strong community in which to base their studies - whether on campus or by distance learning.

In keeping with government initiatives surrounding population health and more general public concerns, the Department divides its activities between two main pillars: Healthcare and Population Health – one focuses on the NHS, healthcare and health services research and the other focuses on population health, healthy living, sport & physical activity and tobacco control; each of these groups, in turn, contain both teaching programmes and research activities. - Population health

Historically, health policy has focused almost exclusively on sickness services provided by agencies such as the National Health Service. Although this focus on healthcare remains hugely important, it is increasingly complemented by aspirations to improve the health of the population by tackling the social determinants of health such as poverty and pollution and by encouraging people to adopt health promoting behaviours such as healthy diets and increased physical activity and to stop health damaging ones such as smoking. There is also growing national and international concern that improvements in health should be fairly distributed by reducing health inequalities. The Department for Health organises its work related to population health improvement in three main ways. Much the largest element in the population health portfolio is related to sport, health and exercise science, but the School attaches growing importance to tobacco control and health inequalities.

- Healthcare

The Department’s expertise in Healthcare focuses on innovation in the design, delivery, organization, and evaluation of healthcare interventions. We have a particular emphasis on disabling and distressing, long term or life-limiting conditions, such as chronic pain, stroke, dementia, rheumatic disease, and severe mental health problems. Current research activity involves collaborations with NHS colleagues in Bath at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases – RNHRD, the Royal United Hospital, the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Care Trust, the Pan Bath & Swindon Primary Care Research Consortium and RehabNET.

- According to the requirements of the commissioner this is a closed programme available only to NHS Wales Graduate Trainee Managers, recruited and selected by Academi Wales who lead on the NHS Graduate Management Scheme.

- This programme in Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care will utilise existing research, teaching and practice expertise in health care management, health economics, health service research and health and social policy within Swansea University and draw on local and regional associations and networks within the Health Boards, Local Government and the third sector to enhance ‘real world’ application.

- The MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care is aligned with the NHS Wales Core Competence Framework for Managers and Supervisors (Welsh Government, 2014).

- It is anticipated that all successful MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care graduates (2016-18) will be employed in general management roles within NHS Wales.

The MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care programme is designed to equip NHS Wales Graduate Management Trainees with a critical and analytical understanding of:

The Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care course will reflect the imperative of making the most of scarce resources to deliver the best possible outcomes for all. This forms a cornerstone of Prudent Health Principles which are the basis of a cultural shift in health and social care in Wales (Bevan Commission 2015, Bradley & Willson 2014).

A comprehensive knowledge of theories, models and concepts of leadership, management, change and innovation will provide the graduates with the tools to reflect, analyse and critically review their own practice, bringing together academic and experiential learning. Inclusive and collaborative learning will be facilitated through participatory and interactive methods.

Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care graduates will be equipped with a sound knowledge and critical understanding of health financing, resource management, improvement science and governance and the principles, methods and application of economic evaluation.

Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care Course Structure

The Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care is a two year, part-time course (2016-18). There are six 20 credit modules, each run over eight weeks in part one. Students will have face to face teaching for 25 hours per module. The modules are taught over three residential days in week one of the module, followed up with webinars/seminars in weeks two and three.

Part two consists of a 60 credit dissertation module, and will be completed in the second year.

Careers and Employability

Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care students will be employed as trainee general managers in Health Boards across Wales from September 2016 and will have access to a two-year work based learning programme delivered by Academi Wales that will build their core managerial capability, staff engagement skills, financial acumen, and ability to deliver change and improvements. This Master’s award is a component of the NHS Graduate Management Trainee Scheme: trainees will study towards a postgraduate level qualification, the MSc/ PGDip/PGCert Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care.

Successful exit from the training scheme will include the award of MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care.

It is anticipated that all successful MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care graduates from this scheme (2016-18) will be employed in general management roles within NHS Wales.

This exciting new course embraces the breadth and complexity of global health challenges facing resource limited contexts and equips candidates with the tools and awareness to contribute to innovative solutions. The course is embedded within the Oxford Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health [embedded link] and benefits from the Centre's reputation and expertise in Global Health research and practice.

The course aims to develop students':
• knowledge and understanding of the major global health problems in resource limited settings and their potential solutions;
• knowledge and skills in research techniques applied in the analysis of global health problems, including quantitative and qualitative research methods, health policy and systems research and public health, with opportunities for training in additional specialist fields;
• capacity to critically appraise evidence in global health;
• skills and practical experience in researching specific health problems.

Upon completion of the course, students will be equipped to continue to advance their knowledge, understanding and skills further in research or professional practice in the field of global health. In the future we anticipate our graduates will assume leadership and research positions within major international health organisations and ministries of health.

Course Content:
In the first term, the course provides an introduction to the breadth of topics in, and methods applicable to global health. The second term offers options ranging from international development to vaccinology. The third term provides students with the unique opportunity to apply their skills and gain first hand experience in a global health project in a resource limited setting. Students will then produce a 10,000 word dissertation related to their third term project.

The first term will consist of core topics on research methods, an overview of some major global health challenges, and topics related to the research and practice of global health. Core modules include:
1. Paradigms and Tools for Global Health: This module will cover epidemiology, statistics, health economics, social science for health and health policy and systems analysis. Methodological paradigms in the health and social sciences will be introduced and basic tools provided for each. Upon completion of this module, students will be able to critically review published literature covering a wide range of global health topics and can opt to further their application skills through the third term placement project.
2. Challenges and Change in International Health: This module will cover some of the key health challenges found in resource limited contexts. Topics will include: water and sanitation; land use, population and migration; climate change; nutrition; vector borne diseases; vaccine preventable diseases; neglected tropical diseases; maternal and child health; non-communicable diseases; accidents and injuries. Upon completion of this module, students will have a broad awareness of the kinds of factors affecting international health, their challenges, solutions that have worked and current efforts to affect change.
3. Global Health Research and Practice: This module highlights some of the important considerations in the research or practice of global health. Topics covered include global health governance, global health research ethics, challenges to research in global health, data management and governance, health impact evaluation, design of disease prevention and health promotion programmes, health programme evaluation, and outbreak investigation.

In the first term, there will be a series of problem-based learning sessions to integrate the core topics covered and allow students the opportunity to engage in more depth with real global health scenarios.

During the second term, in addition to some continued core content, students can select two of the following six options for further study:
1. Advanced Topics in Tropical Medicine: This option delves deeper into the range of infectious diseases affecting resource limited settings and provides a historical account of efforts to address them, the failures and successes, as well as current developments and advances.
2. Vaccinology: This exciting option is for those with an interest in the application of more basic science. The module will examine the science of vaccine development and the challenge of its application in real world contexts. The content will cover advances at the cutting edge of vaccine development.
3. Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health: This option addresses in more depth the persisting challenges faced by mothers, infants and young children in resource limited settings. Topics will engage with the current challenges, discuss viable solutions and address the obstacles to implementation.
4. International Development and Health: This option, offered jointly to MPhil students in Development Studies, aims to introduce students to the important linkages between processes of development (political and economic) and health. The module challenges conventional health thinking and compels a broader consideration of the inter-related factors affecting the health of populations.
5. Health, Environment and Development: This innovative option brings together students (and teachers) from Geography, Development and Global Health to engage with a series of cases illustrating the intersection between processes of development, environmental changes and human health.
6. Case Studies in Field Epidemiology: This option aims to familiarise students with the principles and practice of field epidemiology by lectures and discussions of outbreak investigation case studies.

The third term will involve a funded eight week placement with a global health project in a resource limited setting. Projects represent the range of subjects covered in the course. We have established a series of projects hosted by the Oxford Tropical Network in various geographic regions. Students, with advice from their departmental tutors, may choose from the placements available or propose their own placement (providing it meets course guidelines). The placement project will then form the basis of an independent 10,000 word dissertation to be submitted six weeks after return from placement.

Our goal is to help you develop into critical and reflective public health practitioners who have strong problem solving skills while being able to implement creative solutions. Consequently there is a high emphasis on student participation in all modules with a self-directed approach to learning being essential if you are to achieve the aims of the course within the one year timeframe. Our expectation is that you are active and engaged learners. Staff will expect you to attend class thoroughly prepared having reviewed the relevant directed study. In class you will engage with the module material undertaking activities and discussions to help you gain a deeper understanding of the issues and potential solutions. When in class you will be expected to contribute to discussions by asking questions, offering your point of view and sharing your experiences and knowledge. Key guest speakers are invited to join the modules to bring topical and current issues to the learning experience.

About the Centre for Health Services Studies (CHSS)

CHSS is a funded research centre in Kent's School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research (SSPSSR). CHSS is a centre of research excellence which undertakes high quality research into a wide range of health systems and health services issues at local, national and international levels.

CHSS also supports and advises health care staff to develop and undertake research projects. Course structure

The MSc in Applied Health Research is designed to be studied over one year full-time or two years part-time. There are three compulsory modules, plus four optional modules. To be awarded a MSc in Applied Health Research students are required to obtain 180 M level credits including the dissertation module which comprises 60 credits.

The programme is divided into 2 stages.

Stage 1 comprises taught modules totalling 120 credits. Postgraduate students are required to obtain 60 credits of core modules, and 60 credits from a choice of optional modules.

Stage 2 students are required to obtain 60 credits through a compulsory dissertation module. You must successfully complete each module in order to be awarded the specified number of credits for that module. One credit corresponds to approximately ten hours of 'learning time' (including all classes and all private study and research). Thus obtaining 180 credits in an academic year requires 1,800 hours of overall learning time.

Introduction to Applied Health Research; Quantitative Methods in Health Research and Qualitative Methods in Health Research.

With the agreement of the programme director, students will be able to take an elective/wild module as an optional module from across the School (with the appropriate credit volume).

At Stage 2, students are required to complete a 12-15,000 word dissertation on a subject of their choice.

Our MPH programme provides students with an understanding of how different scientific disciplines can be used to investigate and then develop the best professional practice in epidemiology, public health and the social science of health.

After successful completion of year one, you can choose to follow a general Public Health programme or a programme specialising in the important global health area of Noncommunicable Diseases.

This programme is taught by lecturers based at the University of Edinburgh's Usher Institute, which is part of the Edinburgh Medical School. The Usher Institute is an interdisciplinary research and teaching hub which draws together researchers, clinicians and practitioners from public health, primary care and biomedical and social sciences. The Centre for Population Health Sciences, within the Usher Institute, is also a WHO Collaborating Centre for Population Health Research and Training.

This programme is affiliated with the University's Global Health Academy, an interdisciplinary network which aims to improve global health through collaborative, interdisciplinary research, education and resource development.

Programme structure

You can study to Masters, Diploma, or Certificate level. All students follow the same compulsory Year One Certificate-level courses, which provide a solid foundation in the fundamentals of public health, whilst a suite of elective courses and a specialist strand in noncommunicable diseases offer students the opportunity to explore areas of interest in more depth and to tailor the programme to their own learning needs and career goals.

Year One (Certificate)

All students take the following compulsory courses:

Introduction to Qualitative Research Methods (10 credits)

Year Two (Diploma)

If you have satisfactorily completed the Certificate level, you can decide whether you want to follow a general Public Health programme or a more specialist programme in Public Health (Noncommunicable Diseases). Regardless of which path you decide to follow, if you would like to do a dissertation, the following courses are compulsory:
•Research Skills for Public and Global Health (10 credits)
•Introduction to Systematic Reviews (10 credits)

Year Two: Postgraduate Diploma Public Health

Students planning to do a dissertation in Year Three should choose elective courses totalling exactly 40 credits. At least 20 credits must be chosen from the elective courses list A (see below). Students not planning to do a dissertation should choose elective courses totalling exactly 60 credits. At least 40 credits must be chosen from the elective courses list A (see below).

Year Two: Postgraduate Diploma Public Health (Noncommunicable Diseases)

The following courses are compulsory for all students following the Public Health (Noncommunicable Diseases) programme:

Students following the Public Health (Noncommunicable Diseases) programme and not planning to do a dissertation should choose exactly 20 credits from either list A or list B of elective courses below.

Year Three (Masters)

Students who have completed the Diploma level and are eligible to progress to Year Three can choose either to take a further 60 credits of elective courses (at least 40 of which must be chosen from the elective courses list A) or to do a dissertation project (if agreed by the programme directors), worth 60 credits. The dissertation option will only be available to students who have met the stipulated academic requirements.

Students who complete the Masters degree successfully will graduate with one of the following degree titles, depending on which strand they have selected:

Teaching And Assessment

- Master of Public Health (MPH)

The Master of Public Health was introduced at King's in 2002 to satisfy the need for a modern generic public health masters programme aimed at assisting public health professionals to prepare for management and leadership roles. The MPH is aimed at graduates or holders of a relevant professional qualification, whether medical or non-medical, who are working or intend to work in the broad field of public health.

The curriculum was originally based on that of the Faculty of Public Health but it has a stronger emphasis on prevention and the broader determinants of health.
Since the Programme’s introduction, elective modules have been developed in Toxicology and Health Protection Science to better meet the needs of those working in health protection and environmental health. Other elective modules have been introduced more recently e.g. in the areas of Health Psychology and Global Public Health.

The orientation is towards high income countries and most subjects are taught in a UK context, though we take many students from overseas.

- MPH (Primary Care)

In September 2012, the highly regarded MSc in Primary Health Care merged with the Master of Public Health programme, reflecting the newly combined Department of Primary Care and Public Health Sciences. This has ensured the continued viability of the Primary Health Care programme and enhanced the learning opportunities available to students; ensuring they continue to reflect the demands of practice.

The roles undertaken by GPs, and other members of the Primary Care team have continued to develop and the Health and Social Care Act 2012 introduced further changes to the organization and delivery of healthcare. GPs are playing a central role in these reforms, which include the establishment of clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), with implications for education and training. Furthermore, the requirement of appraisals and advent of revalidation will mean that continuing professional development is ongoing. The MPH (Primary Care) programme will provide the opportunity to fully integrate policy, theory and excellence in practice.

- Course purpose -

The MPH aims to provide graduates (or holders of a relevant medical or non-medical professional qualifications), with the academic background required for leadership roles in public health. The MPH (Primary Care) specialty aims to enable health professionals involved in primary health care provision to develop both personally and professionally.

- Course format and assessment -

Specialist lectures; interactive seminars and workshops; project work; computer-based and problem solving exercises; case-study group work. A wide variety of assessment methods, including: conventional unseen essay-type examinations; short answer examinations; case studies; and conventional essays, poster and oral presentations and mini-projects.

Mental health nursing is a constantly evolving field, with as many as one in four people believed to experience some mental health condition each year. The Mental Health Nursing programme at LSBU is designed to equip you with the skills and competencies to meet the challenges of providing effective mental health care.

Throughout the course, you will gain practice experience in a wide range of in-patient and community settings, reflecting the diversity of mental health specialties. This could include acute psychiatry, child and adolescent mental health, forensic psychiatry, eating disorders, addictions and rehabilitation.

This course equips you with the skills to work in a diverse range of mental health nursing roles across a range of settings, including the NHS and the private health care sector.

You will be compassionate with lots of patience and the ability to remain calm under pressure, with reserves of mental stamina. - Applied biological and pharmacological sciences for nursing
This module introduces biological and pharmacological sciences and applies this to the chosen field of nursing.

- Frameworks and concepts for mental health nursing
This Module introduces mental health service provision. An exploration of the frameworks for care and underpinning philosophies will enable you to appreciate and develop your knowledge and skills in holistic and inclusive assessment and care planning across the service users' personal recovery journey.

- Public health and well-being
This module explores national and international health policies and examines the broader social, economic, environmental and political factors that impact health and well-being. It allows you to investigate issues that have an impact on the health of individuals and communities, recognising the importance of supportive social, physical and cultural environments to promote health and well-being. The experience of mental health, physical illness and learning disabilities will be explored within the context of children's and adults lives and the impact these may have on physical and mental well-being

Year 2:
- Best practice in mental health nursing
Practice to service development and change. It also aims to enable course members to make the transition from students to registered mental health nurses.

- Working with complex presentations
This module builds on Year 1 of the programme. Having established an in-depth knowledge of common mental health presentations, assessment, intervention and evaluation You are now required to consider more complex presentations. The focus will be on the student developing the required knowledge and skills to manage effectively the varied and sometimes conflicting demands which arise out of complex situations across the life span and differing services. The emphasis will be on effective assessment and management of risk, where a critical understanding will develop of the complexities inherent in service user need, service provision and the emerging process for decision-making.

- Politics and leadership
Exploration of the process of health care policy making and realising leadership potential. Studying this module should help you to appreciate not only what is involved in leadership, but also how each individual nurse can make a contribution to the leadership within their area of practice.

- Dissertation (optional)
This module provides you with the opportunity to undertake original enquiry in a chosen area of professional practice. Through the preparatory learning set you will be able to consolidate and extend your knowledge and understanding of research and evaluation design and associated methods of enquiry. You will be supported to develop the practical skills necessary to plan and carry out your chosen project. The preparatory learning set will address ethical and governance issues and processes relevant to your project.

Employability

This course will equip you with the skills to work in a diverse range of mental health nursing roles across a range of settings, including the NHS and the private health care sector. Successful completion of the course fulfils the requirements for graduates to be able to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered Nurse - Mental Health. Recent graduates from this course have gone onto a range of nurse practitioner roles within mental health nursing.

Role and responsibilities

Day-to-day, the work broadly involves working in the community and hospitals taking on a variety of tasks – from giving patients medication, to assessing and supporting a patient's needs.

With experience, there are multiple opportunities for specialisation as your career progresses – such as: alcohol or substance misuse, forensic psychology, psychotherapeutic interventions or working with offenders.

Working hours and salary

Hours can be demanding for Mental Health nurses. Long shifts, unsocial hours and possibly being called to work at the last minute are all common. Salaries start around £21,000. However, with career progression and developed experience this can extend to well over £50,000. (Prospects)

As a graduate from this course, you will be able to apply for further study at postgraduate level. Placements

- Time spent on placement
During the course you will spend 50% of your time involved in academic study and 50% in clinical practice within a broad variety of healthcare settings. A clinical practice placement allows you to put theory into practice by working with a range of health professionals in clinical situations to develop the skills, knowledge and experience required to become a competent nurse. Although sometimes initially challenging, practice learning is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of learning to be a nurse.

Clinical settings

At LSBU you will experience a variety of clinical settings such as NHS acute Trusts, community placements, independent sector and voluntary sector organisations.

- Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust for students based at our Southwark campus
- South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust for students based at our Southwark campus
- We are proud to be the only provider for the North East London Foundation Trust (NELFT). Havering students are placed at this Trust

Structure of placements

Placements are spread over the two years:

Your first clinical placements are designed to introduce you to working in a professional setting and to develop essential care and basic assessment skills, infection control and learn about safeguarding vulnerable people.

You will then build on this experience and take on more responsibility, progressing your clinical reasoning skills and begin to look after small groups of patients making confident, proactive decisions for their health and management with less supervision.

You will also be able to choose a speciality (e.g. working with Clinical Nurse Specialists, specialist services or independent and 3rd sector providers), or a different context of care (e.g. prison, private health care facility, social care, charity, hospice etc.), or a lived experience of a certain condition (e.g. charity work, carer shadowing, etc.)

Supported by a mentor

Whilst in the clinical placement we ensure our nursing students receive continuous support and guidance from a dedicated mentor and practice learning teams made up of lecturers and practitioners.

Facilities

Counselling and Communication Suite:
Our counselling and communication suite is the ideal place for Mental Health students to role play realistic work-based scenarios. It contains two adjoining rooms with a one-way window and audio link, that allows students to practice one-to-one situations with 'clients' while they are monitored by teaching staff in the adjoining room.
