School of Health Sciences postgraduate education
This course is part of our School of Health Sciences postgraduate education programme. The programme allows you to sign up for one module at a time and build your qualification as you go. It also gives you access to interdisciplinary modules across a broad selection of health and social science subjects.
You will take these two core modules no matter which pathway you choose.
The masters award
You need to earn a total of 180 credits for the masters award, consisting of six 20-credit taught modules and a 60-credit dissertation. Twenty-credit modules have approximately 30 hours' classroom-based lecturer contact or group work and we expect this to be backed up by approximately 170 hours of individual study and work on assignments.
The course team are active in public health research particularly around healthy weight, inequalities, mental health, sexual health, infant feeding, diabetes prevention and young people and we provide dissertation research opportunities in these areas.
You will experience formal teaching alongside a series of extracurricular seminars both within the school and through forums such as the Brighton and Sussex Universities Food Network, or the Global Health Network which operate across University of Brighton, Brighton and Sussex Medical School and University of Sussex.
The assessment and teaching methods are varied, including problem based learning in response to public health triggers, and assessments by presentation, vivas as well as formal written critical reports.
The dissertation consists of a literature review, small-scale prime research or a work-based learning project.
You will be supported through your dissertation via monthly optional discussion groups in addition to formal dissertation supervision. If you are working, the dissertation provides an opportunity to conduct a work-based learning project (if you wish), for example evaluating or developing a particular aspect of your organisation's work from a health promotion perspective.
Clinical Skills and Simulation Suite
Our Clinical Skills and Simulation Suite is among the best equipped in the country, and is an invaluable tool for assessment and monitoring students' progress throughout the course.
You will benefit from practising nursing skills in an environment that simulates real-life professional experiences. Provided by the NHS’ South East Coast Ambulance Service, you may have access to our Simbulance, enabling you to work alongside paramedic students in an interprofessional learning environment. On board is a high fidelity mannikin with multiple uses, and a child-size mannikin for paediatric scenarios.
Learning by simulation means you will be confident in your ability to apply your knowledge and skills in your professional life.
On graduation, you will be prepared for a career as a health promotion specialist working in public health practice in the public, not-for-profit, voluntary or commercial sector.
Our students often find employment in public health, or change their job role to include more public health, part way through their masters and may shift from full-time to part-time study to complete their MSc.
Typical roles include, programme coordinators or commissioners for local public health, health project coordinators for voluntary sector organisations, young peoples’ welfare or sexual health advisers in a college or primary prevention setting.
Global health issues are considered throughout the teaching, making the course relevant to participants from all types of economies.

The Master of Public Health award (MPH) is an internationally recognised qualification in Public Health. It is aimed at a wide range of people from both the UK and abroad, from NHS and non-NHS backgrounds including those in primary or secondary care, health authorities and primary care trusts, nursing and professions related to medicine, health promotion, health care research, health management and anyone wishing to develop a career in public health.
Due to a global, national and local focus on public health developments, the Master of Public Health award has increased in popularity over the last few years. The distance learning route allows overseas students to undertake a University of Wolverhampton degree from their own country. The course is also suitable for those unable to travel into University for on-campus courses whether this is due to child-care difficulties, travel issues or general lack of time to enter traditional modules of study.
WLVGlobal features uploading and downloading of module materials such as guides, regulations, reading and research sources/links as well as virtual classrooms whereby students and module leaders can hold discussions to learn collaboratively.
The MPH has been delivered for over a decade at the University and recruits around 60 students per year over two intakes. The success rate is high, mainly attributable to the personal tutor support that is provided to students throughout the taught elements of the award and during research supervision. The primary method of assessment for this course is a combination of unseen written examinations, coursework and presentations. The research project and dissertation will be assessed on an extended piece of writing.
Examinations are mainly held during Examination Period 1 (January) and Examination Period 2 (May / early June). The ‘Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection’ examination is, however, normally held during Examination Period 3 (August).
Resit and replacement examinations are normally scheduled during Examination Period 3 (August). Resit and replacement examinations for the 'Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection' module are normally held during the following Examination Period (January).
You’ll submit your first piece of summative coursework towards the end of Term 1, and coursework submissions continue into April. The coursework for the ‘Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection’ module is submitted in August.
The dissertation is submitted in early September (part-time students submit their dissertation at the end of their second year).

This suite of three year-long part-time programmes is for all health professionals involved in the education and training of undergraduates and postgraduates. Each year is self-contained and a qualification is obtained after each year: Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PG Cert) in year one, Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) in year two; and, Masters (MEd) in year three.
This part-time programme is designed for health professionals involved in teaching at all levels, the PGCert allows you to develop your knowledge of theory and practice in teaching and learning. The PGDip and MEd focus on your skills as a researcher in education.
PGCert (Year 1)
This course is for health professionals who are involved in education and training. It provides opportunities to explore the theory underpinning current practice and enables you to apply this to your own education and training context. It is structured round the UK Professional Standards Framework https://www.heacademy.ac.uk/recognition-accreditation/uk-professional-standards-framework-ukpsf and is accredited by the Higher Education Academy at least until 2017/18.
There are two parallel one year part-time Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) courses that cover very similar materials in slightly different ways. The multi-professional course is for doctors, dentists, nurses and other health professionals; teaching on each module is led by a clinician and an educational expert. The other course is a partnership between the Health Professional Education and Research Unit (HPERU) and the Medical School with team teaching from both; it is specifically for Education Fellows involved in the education of undergraduates from the University of Birmingham.

PGDip (Year 2)
Successful completion of an additional three modules part-time over one year, leads to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Education for Health Professionals.Your research skills and theoretical understanding will develop through engaging with literature, then designing and undertaking a small project focused on an educational topic of your choice.
There are 5 days of teaching on each of the 2 modules below
In addition, there is a third module which is research based
MEd (Year 3)
The PGDip can be extended to a Masters (MEd) qualification by completing a 15,000 word dissertation based on an educational research project of your choice.
In the PG Certificate, you will experience numerous approaches including presentations, plenaries and small group discussions. Your active engagement is strongly encouraged e.g. teaching someone a practical skill and presenting a poster at the Birmingham Conference. As is usual at Masters level, considerable self-study time is required outside the teaching days. The first two modules of the Diploma are similar with active participation from students. The third Diploma module and Masters are based on self-study to undertake your own research. Tutorial support is largely one-to-one meetings and emails, although group seminars are also included in the programmes.
Students are usually already employed in the NHS or other Health organisations such as universities and the military. The PG Certificate is HEA accredited, so on successful completion of the course, students are able to apply for professional recognition as Fellows of the Higher Education Academy. Currently the HEA are charging for this widely recognised teaching qualification: see http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/professional-recognition. However, please note that the HEA is under review so that this might change. The Diploma and Masters are research-based so suitable for those who would like to develop an academic component to their work.
