Healthcare, with an already established strong relationship with Information & Communication Technologies (ICT), is continuously expanding the knowledge forefront as new methods of acquiring data concerning the health of human beings are developed.

Processing this data to extract valuable information about a population (epidemiological applications) or the individual (personalised healthcare applications) is the work of health data scientists. Their work has the potential to improve quality of life on a large scale.

Swansea University is the first institution in the UK to offer this taught master's programme in Health Data Science designed to develop the essential skills and knowledge required of the Health Data Scientist.

Key Features of the Health Data Science Programme

Who should study MSc Health Data Science?

The Health Data Science course is suitable for those working in healthcare with roles involving the analysis of health data and also computer scientists with experience in working with data from the healthcare domain, as well as biomedical engineers and other similar professions.

Course Structure

Students must complete 6 modules of 20 credits each and produce a 60 credits dissertation on a Health Data Science project. Each module of the programme requires a short period of attendance that is augmented by preparatory and reflective material supplied via the course website before and after attendance.

Attendance Pattern

Health Data Science students are required to attend the University for 1 week (5 consecutive days) for each module in Part One. Attendance during Part Two is negotiated with the supervisor.

Our MSc Health Data Science course aims to create a new breed of scientist who can understand the healthcare sector and medicine, how data is collected and analysed, and how this can be communicated to influence various stakeholders.

The current model of healthcare delivery in the UK is subject to unprecedented challenges. An ageing population, the impact of lifestyle factors and increasing costs mean that the existing approaches may become unsustainable. 

This, coupled with a drive towards personalised medicine, presents an opportunity for a step change in healthcare delivery.

To do this, we need to make best use of the health data we collect and create a better understanding of the relationship between treatments, outcomes, patients and costs. 

This MSc promotes the need for translational thinking to provide the knowledge, skills and understanding that will be applied across new challenges within healthcare delivery.

Students from a variety of professional backgrounds will benefit from the course, as the structure of the MSc ensures that you will share this knowledge with each other and learn to work in multidisciplinary teams, rather than in specialist silos.

The course has eight taught units covering key skills for health data science. Seven units are core and there is one optional unit depending on training needs and background. For those studying for an MSc, there is also a 60-credit research project.

Aims

This course will allow you to:

  • gain key background knowledge and an understanding of the healthcare system, from the treatment of individuals to the wider population;
  • gain an understanding of the governance structures and frameworks used when working with health data and in the healthcare sector;

Research project options

MSc students will have an opportunity to conduct their research project in other settings such as the NHS and the biopharmaceutical industry, as well as academia.

Teaching and learning

The course covers four main areas that bring together technical, modelling and contextual skills to apply these to real world problems when harnessing the potential of health data. 

In each of the units that deliver the key skills, both the importance of the patient and the governance surrounding working in the healthcare environment (especially structures around information governance) is embedded throughout.

Each unit will use case studies provided by existing work and research at the Health eResearch Centre(HeRC). The course will focus on large and complex health datasets (often routinely collected) in environments that safeguard patient confidentiality.

The course will encourage intellectual curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking, providing transferable skills for lifelong learning and research and cultivation of reflective practice. 

Through the development of these innovation, critical, evaluative, analytical, technical, problem solving and professional skills, you will be able to conduct impactful work and advance healthcare delivery. 

We see learning and teaching as collaborative knowledge construction, which recognises the contribution of all stakeholders (academic staff, service users and carers and students). This is demonstrated in the course through contributions made by these stakeholders through case studies, examples, invited seminars and participation in group work. 

A variety of teaching methods will be used within the constraints of the method of delivery. The course will be student centred and will be delivered from the outset using a combination of face-to-face, distance learning and blended learning units.

Coursework and assessment

A range of assessments are used within each course unit and across the course as a whole.

All assessments require you to integrate knowledge and understanding, and to apply this to case studies and the outcomes of each unit.

Assessment will occur in a variety of forms including (but not exclusively) essays, case studies, assessed seminar/tutorial presentations and literature reviews.

Written assignments and presentations have a formative role in providing feedback (particularly in the early stages of course units) as well as contributing to summative assessment.

Online quizzes provide a useful method of regular testing, ensuring that you actively engage with the taught material.

The assessment of tutorials contains an element of self and peer evaluation, so you can learn the skills associated with the effective management of and participation in collaborative activity.

The course also places an emphasis on group work, as this a vital skill for professionals operating in a multidisciplinary area such as health data science, and this is shown in the teaching methods and assignments. 

Each unit has a different emphasis on the group work assessment based on the nature of the material being covered, how they are to apply the knowledge and the work they are to complete.

The dissertation for the MSc requires you to undertake an extended written piece of work (10,000 to 15,000 words) that focuses on a specific aspect of health data science.

Who is it for?

This programme is for students who have a numerate first degree or can demonstrate numerate skills. Students are often at the early stages of their careers in diverse professions including economics, statistics and computer science.

Students will have a curiosity about data, and will want to learn new techniques to boost their career and be part of exciting current industry developments. The MSc in Data Science includes some complex programming tasks because of the applied nature of the course, so many students have a mathematics or statistics background and enjoy working with algorithms.

Objectives

The demand for data scientists in the UK has grown more than ten-fold in the past five years *. The amount of data in the world is growing exponentially. From analysing tyre performance to detecting problem gamblers, wherever data exists, there are opportunities to apply it.

City’s MSc Data Science programme covers the intersection of computer science and statistics, machine learning and practical applications. We explore areas such as visualisation because we believe that data science is about generating insight into data as well as its communication in practice.

The programme focuses on machine learning as the most exciting technology for data and we have learned from our own graduates that this is of high value when it comes to employment within the field. At City, we have excellent expertise in machine learning and the facilities students need to learn the technical aspects of data analysis. Placements

There is the opportunity to do an internship as part of the programme. The final project, which is normally three months for a full-time student, can be extended to six months if you want to study within a specific organisation. When it comes to the big data and data science area, we have established relationships with organisations including the BBC, Microsoft and The British Library so you can be confident that with City, your access to professional experience is unparalleled. One recent student undertook an internship with Google and has since secured a job within the company.

Academic facilities

The School's computer science laboratories are equipped with the latest up-to-date hardware and software. From Oracle’s leading commercial object-relational database server to PCs with state-of-the-art NVidia GPUs for computer graphics, you will have access to an array of tools to support your learning.

The MSc Data Science programme offers two (three by mid 2016) dedicated computer servers for the Big Data module, which you can also use for your final project to analyse large data sets. We give you the opportunity to undertake training in MATLAB, the most popular numerical and technical programming environment, while you study.

Scholarships

A scholarship for the full fees of the MSc will be offered to an outstanding applicant. The scholarship is available to UK/EU and overseas students, studying full-time. Teaching and learning

The teaching and learning methods we use mean that students’ specialist knowledge and autonomy increase as they progress through each module. Active researchers guide your progress in the areas of machine learning, data visualization, and high-performance computing, which culminates with an individual project. This is an original piece of research conducted with academic supervision, but largely independently and, where appropriate, in collaboration with industrial partners.

Taught modules are delivered through a series of 20 hours of lectures and 10 hours of tutorials/laboratory sessions. Lectures are normally used to:
-Present and exemplify the concepts underpinning a particular subject.
-Highlight the most significant aspects of the syllabus.
-Indicate additional topics and resources for private study.

Tutorials help you develop the skills to apply the concepts we have covered in the lectures. We normally achieve this through practical problem solving contexts.

Laboratory sessions give you the opportunity to apply concepts and techniques using state-of-the-art software, environments and development tools.

In addition to lectures, laboratory sessions and tutorial support, you also have access to a personal tutor. This is an academic member of staff from whom you can gain learning support throughout your degree. In addition, City’s online learning environment Moodle contains resources for each of the modules from lecture notes and lab materials, to coursework feedback, model answers, and an interactive discussion forum.

We expect you to study independently and complete coursework for each module. This should amount to approximately 120 hours per module if you are studying full time. Each module is assessed through a combination of written examination and coursework, where you will need to answer theoretical and practical questions to demonstrate that you can analyse and apply data science methods and techniques.

The individual project is a substantial task. It is your opportunity to develop a research-related topic under the supervision of an academic member of staff. This is the moment when you can apply what you have learnt to solve a real-world problem using large datasets from industry, academia or government and use your knowledge of collecting and processing real data, designing and implementing big data methods and applying and evaluating data analysis, visualisation and prediction techniques. At the end of the project you submit a substantial MSc project report, which becomes the mode of assessment for this part of the programme.

The MSc in International Health and Tropical Medicine provides a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary foundation in global health. This exciting new course embraces the breadth and complexity of global health challenges facing resource limited contexts and equips candidates with the tools and awareness to contribute to innovative solutions. The course is embedded within the Oxford Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health [embedded link] and benefits from the Centre's reputation and expertise in Global Health research and practice.

The course aims to develop students':
• knowledge and understanding of the major global health problems in resource limited settings and their potential solutions;
• knowledge and skills in research techniques applied in the analysis of global health problems, including quantitative and qualitative research methods, health policy and systems research and public health, with opportunities for training in additional specialist fields;
• capacity to critically appraise evidence in global health;
• skills and practical experience in researching specific health problems.

Upon completion of the course, students will be equipped to continue to advance their knowledge, understanding and skills further in research or professional practice in the field of global health. In the future we anticipate our graduates will assume leadership and research positions within major international health organisations and ministries of health.

Course Content:
In the first term, the course provides an introduction to the breadth of topics in, and methods applicable to global health. The second term offers options ranging from international development to vaccinology. The third term provides students with the unique opportunity to apply their skills and gain first hand experience in a global health project in a resource limited setting. Students will then produce a 10,000 word dissertation related to their third term project.

The first term will consist of core topics on research methods, an overview of some major global health challenges, and topics related to the research and practice of global health. Core modules include:
1. Paradigms and Tools for Global Health: This module will cover epidemiology, statistics, health economics, social science for health and health policy and systems analysis. Methodological paradigms in the health and social sciences will be introduced and basic tools provided for each. Upon completion of this module, students will be able to critically review published literature covering a wide range of global health topics and can opt to further their application skills through the third term placement project.
2. Challenges and Change in International Health: This module will cover some of the key health challenges found in resource limited contexts. Topics will include: water and sanitation; land use, population and migration; climate change; nutrition; vector borne diseases; vaccine preventable diseases; neglected tropical diseases; maternal and child health; non-communicable diseases; accidents and injuries. Upon completion of this module, students will have a broad awareness of the kinds of factors affecting international health, their challenges, solutions that have worked and current efforts to affect change.
3. Global Health Research and Practice: This module highlights some of the important considerations in the research or practice of global health. Topics covered include global health governance, global health research ethics, challenges to research in global health, data management and governance, health impact evaluation, design of disease prevention and health promotion programmes, health programme evaluation, and outbreak investigation.

In the first term, there will be a series of problem-based learning sessions to integrate the core topics covered and allow students the opportunity to engage in more depth with real global health scenarios.

During the second term, in addition to some continued core content, students can select two of the following six options for further study:
1. Advanced Topics in Tropical Medicine: This option delves deeper into the range of infectious diseases affecting resource limited settings and provides a historical account of efforts to address them, the failures and successes, as well as current developments and advances.
2. Vaccinology: This exciting option is for those with an interest in the application of more basic science. The module will examine the science of vaccine development and the challenge of its application in real world contexts. The content will cover advances at the cutting edge of vaccine development.
3. Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health: This option addresses in more depth the persisting challenges faced by mothers, infants and young children in resource limited settings. Topics will engage with the current challenges, discuss viable solutions and address the obstacles to implementation.
4. International Development and Health: This option, offered jointly to MPhil students in Development Studies, aims to introduce students to the important linkages between processes of development (political and economic) and health. The module challenges conventional health thinking and compels a broader consideration of the inter-related factors affecting the health of populations.
5. Health, Environment and Development: This innovative option brings together students (and teachers) from Geography, Development and Global Health to engage with a series of cases illustrating the intersection between processes of development, environmental changes and human health.
6. Case Studies in Field Epidemiology: This option aims to familiarise students with the principles and practice of field epidemiology by lectures and discussions of outbreak investigation case studies.

The third term will involve a funded eight week placement with a global health project in a resource limited setting. Projects represent the range of subjects covered in the course. We have established a series of projects hosted by the Oxford Tropical Network in various geographic regions. Students, with advice from their departmental tutors, may choose from the placements available or propose their own placement (providing it meets course guidelines). The placement project will then form the basis of an independent 10,000 word dissertation to be submitted six weeks after return from placement.

About this degree

Students will learn how to define and measure health, understand the role of socioeconomic and behavioural determinants of health, appreciate how health systems and public policy impact on health, and learn how to evaluate interventions to improve population health.

Dissertation/research project

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 7,500 words. An oral presentation and a lay summary of 500 words are also required. The dissertation can include primary research, secondary data analysis, a literature/historical review or a project proposal in a field related to population health.

COURSE DETAILS

This course covers a very comprehensive range of topics split in to four large modules worth 30 credits each plus the MSc Project worth 60 credits. External speakers from blue-chip and local companies will give seminars to complement your learning, that will be real-world case studies related to the subjects you are studying in your modules. These are designed to improve the breadth of your learning and could lead to ideas that you can develop for your MSc Project.

TEACHING

The course is focused around the underpinning knowledge and practical skills needed for employment within the data sciences industry. There will be 22 hours of lectures; 11 hours of tutorials and 22 hours workshops; 2 hours of examination-based assessment; and 245 hours of independent study, assessed coursework and preparation for examination. This makes a total of 300 hours total learning experience.

  • Lectures will be used to introduce ideas, and to stimulate group discussions.
  • Tutorials will be used to develop problem solving strategies and to provide practice and feedback with scenarios to help with exam preparation.
  • Workshops will be used to develop expertise in SAS tools, by analysing example datasets of increasing complexity.

ASSESSMENT

  • 50% of the assessment will comprise a practical project where students will be given some data, will devise and carry out an analysis strategy and will present their interpretations and explain their strategy. 
  • 50% will comprise an examination, which will assess more theoretical aspects of the course and will explore students’ immediate response to unseen scenarios or data.

CAREER PROSPECTS

A recent report by e-Skills and SAS (Big Data Analytics: An assessment of the demand for labour and skills, 2012-1017) indicates the demand forecast for staff with big data skills is predicted to ”rise by 92% between 2012 and 2017, and by 2017 there will be at least 28,000 job openings for big data staff in the UK each year…”

FURTHER STUDY

The Informatics Research Centre in the School of Computing, Science and Engineering at the University of Salford builds on the history, success and achievements of the research in Computer Science and Information Systems developed at the University of Salford over the last thirty years.

Evolving around Data and Information in all their types and usages, the Centre covers all phases and processes from data pre-processing to engineering and visualisation. The Centre is developing novel methods and systems for the analysis and recognition of various data sets, learning behaviours and causal models. The techniques and systems developed have a wide range of potential applications including digitisation of historical documents, medical diagnosis, semantic tagging, segmentation of types of viewers and their behaviours, text mining and retrieval and data visualisation.

There is an enormous and increasing amount of data that is collected. A key challenge is then to make use of this wealth of data. How can we manage this data, and analyse it to exploit useful information that can guide decision making?

This emerging area goes under the name “Data Science”. There is growing demand for people, “Data Scientists”, who have the skills to manage and analyse enormous amounts of data using a range of techniques such as data mining, statistical techniques, and machine learning.

Data Scientist has been called the “Sexiest job of the 21st century”, and the unique combination of technical skills (stats, data management) and business understanding has been said to make Data Scientists “highly sought after and highly paid”.

Master of Business Data Science (MBusDataSc)

The MBusDataSc primary focus is to equip you to become a practitioner, allowing you to meet the needs of industry, and solve the data problems of the world. However, there will also be an alternative path that will focus on preparing students for research in the area (e.g. going on to do a masters by research or PhD).

The proposed degree is inherently multidisciplinary, featuring Information Science and Marketing, which gives the degree a strong business focus; as well as contributions from Computer Science and from Statistics.

Once you have completed the MBusDataSc you will have developed an advanced knowledge of data science. You will understand how data analysis can be used in business, including being able to identify opportunities to use data, be aware of ethical and privacy issues and possible mitigations, and be able to select appropriate means of presenting the results of analysis. You will be able to select and apply techniques to manage and analyse large collections of data.

We offer a two-year Master of Science in Computer Science centered on this emerging field. The backbone of the program is constituted by three core units on advanced data management, machine learning, and high performance computing. Leveraging on the expertise of our faculty, the rest of the program is organised in four tracks, Business Intelligence, Health & Life Sciences, Pervasive Computing, and Visual Computing, each providing a solid grounding in data science and engineering as well as a firm grasp of the domain of interest.

By blending standard classes with recitations and lab sessions our program ensures that each student masters the theoretical foundations and acquires hands-on experience in each subject. In most units credit is obtained by working on a final project. Additional credit is also gained through short-term internship in the industry or in a research lab. The master thesis is worth 25% of the total credit.

The Master of Public Health (MPH) course is an intensive study programme that aims to provide you with the skills and knowledge informing the key domains of public health.

You will:

  • explore the underpinning theoretical frameworks which draw upon a range of disciplines reflecting the wider determinants of health and ill-health. 
  • examine the effectiveness of public health interventions, services and policies. 
  • develop skills of critical appraisal through understanding different research designs and methods that are informing an emerging evidence based public health.
  • be able to put public health principles into effect in a variety of settings and appreciate the complexities of evolving public health concerns and population health needs.
  • study the breadth of public health or pursue a specialist pathway that better meets your specific career advancement needs. 

All students are enrolled onto the Master of Public Health which addresses the key domains of public health practice. The course is made up of optional and required modules.

The required modules are:

  • Basic Epidemiology & Statistics for Public Health,
  • Prevention and Control of Communicable Disease 
  • and a Dissertation Project.

Once accepted onto the course, you may wish to pursue a specialist pathway by selecting the additional required/compulsory modules.

If you are interested in the :

  • Primary Care pathway, you will need to select the module Delivering Public Health in Primary Care: from Theory to Practice
  • Environmental Health pathway will require either the Essentials of Environmental Public Health Science and/or Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection modules

You will also explore a range of optional modules to bring your total credit value up to 180, allowing you to create a unique study plan that reflects your interests.

If you are studying full-time, you will complete the course in one year, from September to September. If you are studying part-time, your programme will take two years to complete.

In addition to the required modules (which total 90 credits), part-time students should plan to take 30-45 optional module credits in their first year and 45-60 optional module credits in their second year.

Teaching

We use lectures, seminars and group tutorials to deliver most of the modules on the programme. You will also be expected to undertake a significant amount of independent study.

Assessment

The primary method of assessment for this course is a combination of unseen written examinations, coursework and presentations. The research project and dissertation will be assessed on an extended piece of writing. 

Examinations are mainly held during Examination Period 1 (January) and Examination Period 2 (May / early June). The ‘Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection’ examination is, however, normally held during Examination Period 3 (August).

Resit and replacement examinations are normally scheduled during Examination Period 3 (August). Resit and replacement examinations for the 'Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection' module are normally held during the following Examination Period (January).

You’ll submit your first piece of summative coursework towards the end of Term 1, and coursework submissions continue into April. The coursework for the ‘Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection’ module is submitted in August.

The dissertation is submitted in early September (part-time students submit their dissertation at the end of their second year). 

The formal teaching, self-directed study time and assessment methods detailed above are typical and give you a good indication of what to expect. They are however, subject to change.

Recent years have seen increased attention on the field of global health as a major driver of development, international co-operation and diplomacy. Global health is a multidisciplinary field of study that takes a global perspective on the state of people’s health, and enhances knowledge and implementation of effective intervention strategies through a systematic examination of health problems and their determinants.

This course is particularly suited to individuals working, or planning to work, in enhancing population health in middle or low-income countries, within governmental (eg Ministry of Health), non-governmental or intergovernmental organisations (eg WHO or UN agencies). It will equip you to work effectively at a senior level to promote the health and social wellbeing of populations through the development of effective and responsive health systems. It will orient you to issues in which staff at the Institute are recognised to have made world-leading research contributions, such as supporting health systems strengthening in fragile and confict-affected states, and mental health and psychosocial support for vulnerable populations. Participants are typically drawn from a broad range of backgrounds, including physicians, nurses, health ministries and the NGO sector.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Teaching is comprised of a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies, simulation exercises and projects. Assessment is continuous and incorporates assignments, action plans, projects and examinations. For their dissertation projects, students can chose to collect desk-based studies, or conduct primary data collection in collaboration with national or international organisations working in health and development.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module which you study on campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Your exact attendance requirements at QMU will depend on which module you are studying and whether you are studying full or part time. Modules typically run over five weeks and involve two sessions of three hours in class each week. In addition, for each module students spend around 10-12 hours of each week on preparatory class work independently and with colleagues, including readings and exercises available on dedicated web-based learning platforms.

Modules

Students study core modules totalling 60 credits addressing such subjects as Global Health and Social Policy; Researching Global Health and Development; Global Public Health; and Health Systems. A further 60 credits are then selected from the broad range of classes available within the Institute or from other QMU programmes recognised as of relevance. The former includes modules such as Qualitative Research Methods, Gender Health and Development, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Social Development Policy and Practice and a range of elective classes available subject to student demand. The latter includes modules related to leadership, research, advocacy and specialised fields of study such as nutrition and epidemiology.

For the MSc award you will then complete a dissertation on an approved topic related to global heath and development (60 credits).

Careers

As a graduate you will be well equipped for employment as a global health practitioner, senior health manager or policy maker working in, or advising regarding, a developing country or one in economic transition. Graduates have attained positions as: health programme manager; humanitarian co-ordinator; civil society programme manager; research and advocacy officer; donor agency health advisor and a variety of advanced positions within home ministries and educational institutions.
