The programme is designed to develop and equip critical champions and ambassadors for quality, safety and governance in health and social care. It enables you to apply your comprehensive knowledge, understanding, expertise and advanced skills to lead evidence-based enhancement of quality, safety and governance in your health and social care settings and evaluate the impact of this. The programme is suitable for individuals from the public, independent and voluntary sectors from any professional background, including clinical and support services.

What you study

Year 1 focuses on the transition to mastery and explores the context of safety, quality and governance in terms of policy, theory and experience, at a personal, local, national and international level. You also study different types and sources of evidence. You use these to identify a quality, safety or governance issue of relevance to your role based on an in-depth study of the principles, practices and tools of safety and governance in health and social care. You then develop and justify a business case for change based on this.

The modules studied in Year 1 make up the Advancing Quality Improvement in Health and Social Care, PgCert.

In Year 2, you plan and implement a change project based on your business case presented at the end of Year 1. Teaching

In Years 1 and 2 the programme is taught in short study blocks spread across the academic year over a total of 14 days. We use a range of teaching methods including lectures and workshops, student-led seminars, action learning, real-life scenarios and case study analysis, interactive and online learning activities, directed and self-directed study activities. Year 3 is mainly guided self-directed study with the support of a dissertation supervisor. You are supported by module tutors with extensive experience in this subject area and the programme leader who is a member of the founding cohort for the NHS England and Health Foundation Q initiative.

We use a range of assessment modes throughout the programme. These include an essay on the nature and use of evidence, analysis of a quality, safety or governance issue using a human factors approach, a business case and the final dissertation evaluating the change you have implemented.

Other modes of assessment include a poster presentation and defence, and an oral presentation with questions and answers.
The programme is supported by a critical friends stakeholder support forum which consists of service users and carers, employer representatives and academic staff. Members of this group participate in student assessment as well as supporting programme design and delivery as a means of ensuring the person-centred approach pervades all aspects of the programme and to maximise employer/organisational benefit.

The key feature of your PGCE is that all learning experiences and opportunities you will have on the course are designed to inform and complement each other culminating in the development of your academic and professional practice as a teacher/lecturer. So you will be prepared initially, and then have the opportunity to reflect on your teaching placement experiences and will have a focus on planning and preparing to teach, assessment for learning, managing behaviour and team working skills.

You will also be supported in developing your own teaching in an independent environment with a constant focus on guided self-improvement. You will gain confidence in your ability to reflect on your own practical teaching experience and develop important skills such as critical self-reflection while improving your subject and curriculum knowledge.

Suitability

Our students who enter the PGCE in health and social care originate from a range of academic and professional backgrounds and possess a degree in a subject related to health and social care including the social sciences and early years, or in some exceptional cases an unrelated degree if you have worked in employment related to health and social care.

The course is uniquely set up for postgraduates to gain experience teaching, learning and assessment both in a school setting and in college or sixth form environments.

Content

On your PGCE 14-19 course here at Canterbury Christ Church University you will study three University-based modules Curriculum Studies, Professional Studies and Enhanced Studies and one placement-based module Professional Practice.

Format

Your University-based sessions are taught through a series of workshops and subject input with an emphasis placed upon informed discussion, debate and knowledge exchange.

You will be prepared in designing and developing subject based materials to support and complement your placement based experience and practice. There is a practical focus on the skills and abilities required for teaching: for example, presentations, planning and assessment strategies. There is pair, group work, discussions and micro-teaching alongside an individual, personalised approach to developing as a professional teacher.

Your three University-based modules are assessed through small-scale research assignments of 4,000 words each and offer you the opportunity to gain 20 Masters Level credits in each of these modules. You are supported through each of these by means of tutorials with your university tutors.

During your two Professional Practice teaching placements you will be working closely with and supported by teachers/lecturers and assigned to a designated Curriculum Mentor to oversee your developmental needs and progress.

Assessment

Your assessment on the PGCE 14-19 course here at Canterbury Christ Church University is through formative methods with a final grading completed at the end of the PGCE.

Each of your three University-based modules (Curriculum, Professional and Enhanced Studies) are assessed through a 4,000 word small-scale research piece and with each of these modules offering you the opportunity to gain 20 Masters level credits it is possible to gain a total of 60 Masters level credits through these three modules.

Both your two Professional Practice placements are formatively and then summatively assessed through the teaching files you have created, your reflective Learning Journal, regular lesson observations by the teachers/lecturers you work with on a day to day basis, your Curriculum Mentors in your teaching placements and your University tutor. There is also an Interim and Final report from both your teaching placements.

What can I do next?

The PGCE Health and Social Care (14-19) prepares graduates for the demands of teaching the 14-19 age range in the secondary and further education and skills sectors. Candidates will be awarded a PGCE and will be able to gain Qualified Teacher Status after a statutory Induction period in a school, enabling them to teach in schools.

The programme is also designed to provide a strong foundation for working in the further education and skills sector and can lead to QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning & Skills) through the process of Professional Formation with the Education and Training Foundation.

Previous PGCE Health and Social Care (14-19) graduates are working in a variety of educational contexts as subject teachers/lecturers and mentors.

This PGCE also enables you to gain up to 60 credits at Level 7 which can be accredited as part of a Masters degree and can be taken onto other universities.

Assessment
A broad range of assessment formats is used to help you to explore new ways of learning. Depending on the
module, you might be assessed on a seminar or poster presentation, a briefing report, research proposal or
portfolio of work. Many modules offer scope for reflecting on your specific area of practice and experiences

The course is taught on a part-time basis. Most teaching involves face-to-face interaction on campus (typically over five days per module), supported by facilitated online learning and self-directed learning. The focus at postgraduate level is on facilitating independent critical study. While the responsibility for your learning lies very much with you, there will be plenty of support on hand.

The vision within health and social care is to have practitioners who are able to approach the new decade with well founded professional beliefs, confidence, political awareness and preparedness to meet the challenge of shifting user expectations, diminution of traditional roles and commitment to different ways of working. Consequently, it is recognised that a ‘one size fits all’ approach to education will not be suitable to many practitioners, therefore this MA programme emphasises flexibility, and maximises choice, so that learning opportunities meet the needs of your developing role.

The MA Health and Social Care Studies programme structure is designed to facilitate three climb out awards, specifically these are the Post Graduate Certificate, Post Graduate Diploma and Masters Award. These pathways enable students to engage with a flexible pathway to suit their own learning needs. The programme will attract a range of health and social care professionals and promotes a culture of shared learning. Such opportunities have the potential to enrich the learning experience by supporting the development of critical thinking, creativity and can nurture an entrepreneurial approach to health and social care delivery. Although many of the learning and teaching opportunities will be shared with level six students, there will be opportunities available for Post Graduate students to extend their academic ability through seminars, tutorials and critical debates with their peer group.

Content and Modules

The MA Health and Social Care Practice is underpinned by a philosophy of flexibility to enable students to have greater autonomy in their learning. There are, of course, mandatory modules that you will be required to complete however where there is the opportunity to select an optional module you may be able to make a personal selection or seek advice from one of our professional advisers who will guide you through modules that are specific to specialist areas of health and social care.
Modules studied

All awards with the MA Programme will require completion of the 40 credit module “Delivery of Heath and Social Care Practice”. This module is delivered over two semesters.
The 20 credit “Research Module” is mandatory for all students progressing beyond the Post Graduate Certificate.
The 60 credit “Dissertation” is mandatory for all students wishing to complete the MA award and is delivered over two semesters.

Optional Modules
Students are encouraged to be forward thinking and to engage in learning opportunities to maximise their personal and professional potential. Therefore although there are modules which are focused on specialist areas of health and social care such as children’s nursing and midwifery practice, many of the modules can be chosen by practitioners from a range of professional backgrounds.

Modules can be identified from the Continuing Professional Development calendar of modules available on the university website. However, students may also be able to select modules offered within other MA/MSc programmes delivered at UCS with the prior agreement of the programme leaders.

Who is it for?

This course is for students who are working in clinical and social care settings who want to pose challenging questions and confront the answers. It will appeal to those who want to create positive change by conducting evidence-based research which can be applied in practice. Our students come from a variety of careers in the health and social care sector; including emergency practitioners, health care managers and podiatrists. Students also come on to the course directly from undergraduate degree courses.

Objectives

The MSc in Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care is a scholarly Masters degree with a strong theoretical focus. We believe that to be effective, you need a future-proofed qualification; one which explores practice from a wider, research-based perspective.

Designed in consultation with users and carers, the course takes account of the user experience and has been developed around their expectations of professionals within the healthcare sector.

The MSc will challenge practices within the current healthcare sector and ask questions such as:
-How can we prove and measure our performance?
-To what extent should we challenge guidelines or established forms of practice?
-How can our actions within practice transform the user experience?
-How can we manage levels of stress in a way that promotes welfare?

The MSc also offers students the flexibility to tailor the modules they study to meet their professional needs by offering a range of elective modules from across the School’s programmes from management and leadership to infection control.

Teaching and learning

You will learn in large and small multi-disciplinary groups through a variety of methods including institution-based taught modules, e-learning and work-based learning. Modules are run by experienced practitioners and leading researchers, using a variety of direct and interactive teaching methods. We support and encourage you to become an independent learner and you will have access to Moodle, City's Virtual Learning Platform, for a more interactive learning experience.

One of the greatest advantages of this degree is the variety of students the course attracts. As a student on this programme at City you will be able to share your experience with peers from across the world and a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds.

Assessment

You may be assessed by coursework, examinations, portfolios, mini labs, case studies, reports, seminar presentations and skills schedules depending on your choice of elective modules. You may also be expected to take part in formative assessment activities in addition to the summative assessments.

Modules

Most students will study two core modules in the first or second term; Critical approaches to advanced practice and introduction to research methods and Applied data analysis . From this point onwards, you direct your programme of study choosing five elective modules from a wide range on offer within the School of Health Sciences.

Our expert lecturers will be able to advise you on the best elective modules to tailor the course to your own needs and interests. Full-time students can complete the course in a year, but most students undertake the taught modules in a year and conduct their dissertation in the second year. There is also the opportunity to complete the dissertation remotely.

The course constitutes 45 credits for the core modules, 75 credits for the elective modules and 60 credits for the dissertation. When it comes to the dissertation, you can choose your own area of interest and format, opting to submit a traditional research project where you source data and analyse it, or a literature review where you conduct a critical review of current practice.

The normal period of registration for a Masters degree is one year's taught programme for full-time students (plus up to one year for dissertation) or two years' taught programme for part-time students (plus up to one year for the dissertation). The normal period of registration for a Postgraduate Diploma is one years' taught programme for full-time students or two years' taught programme for part-time students. Full-time students must complete their Postgraduate Diploma in three years and part-time students in five years.

Postgraduate Certificates in health and social care are not offered on a full-time basis. Alternatively, students can take modules from this Masters degree as standalone Continuing Personal and Professional Development (CPPD) courses. In this case, course costs might vary. Elective modules
Students have the opportunity to complete an additional five modules of 15 credits offered across the School of Health Sciences CPPD portfolio. There are over 50 modules to choose from including modules such as psychology for health and social care, leading and managing change, and infection control.

Students completing the two core modules plus one optional module totalling 60 credits can exit with a Postgraduate Certificate. On successful completion of seven modules (120 credits) students can exit with a Postgraduate Diploma. The completion of the dissertation leads to an MSc (180 credits).

Career prospects

Graduates from the Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care course go into management consultant positions, teaching and research. Many work for the NHS or local authorities, but there are opportunities to work in other health areas. The course also qualifies you to apply for research posts and to conduct independent research.

By successfully completing this course you will be able to enhance your skills in practice. You will also be able to apply your skills within posts in administration, management and health research in a variety of public and private settings.

Students also go on to advanced higher-grade senior health and/or social care practitioner roles in specific specialist areas. Fundamental Principles of Risk Management – aims to develop understanding of history and underpinning theories and the process of risk management and their application within complex health and related contexts.
Influences On Risk Management – examines the nature and behaviour of open systems in order to identify the key influences on risk management practice and policy within the learner’s own context and contemporary health and safety law in relation to healthcare standards and financial constraints
MDT Working For Risk Management – examines key features and challenges to interprofessional working and collaboration, how to effectively co-ordinate inter-disciplinary teams and the influence of policy, guidelines and work dynamics.
Leadership, Quality, Innovation and Change – aims to develop the skills and knowledge required by health care professionals to creatively lead the cultural change required to place patients and clients at the centre of care delivery.
Work-based learning – enables learning and personal development through individual work based activities and the dissemination of practice that will improve patient care.
Research Methods or e-Research Methods – an introduction to research methods and presents a platform for students to engage in both quantitative and qualitative research approaches and develop an ability to utilise specific research techniques.
Dissertation – supervised research project (20 000 words)

Health and Social Care Education provides a flexible and relevant route to a postgraduate teaching qualification for those working in the health and social care professions. The course reflects the need to prepare teachers in a multi-professional context, with increased shared learning, to enable them to teach and to facilitate teamwork in that environment.
The course brings together practitioners from many different professional fields, including the professions allied to medicine such as medicine, such as physiotherapists, podiatrists, occupational therapists and social workers who share a mutual interest in developing educational skills.

Professional accreditation
The programme is accredited by the Higher Education Authority and validated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Students wishing to record their qualification with the NMC are required to enrol for the Consolidation module.

Course structure
Attendance is one day a week for the extensive mode or blocks of study over two semesters if taken intensively. The course may be taken over one year or up to three years.
The modules explore educational theory linked to the practices of the developing role of the teacher and course design and planning. Students undertake 180 hours of teaching practice during the course, including direct teaching experience, educational activities appropriate to their professional role, and portfolio development.
Action learning sets encourage the development of the portfolio through reflection, analysis and challenge students' perceptions of their teaching role in a supportive manner.

The course offers a stimulating learning experience, which provides an excellent model of education for intending teachers. Students have a lived experience in a positive learning environment that values creativity, critical thinking and reflection.
The aims of the course are to:
- facilitate students' personal and professional development in terms of their knowledge, skills and critical awareness of teaching and learning in health and social care settings as well as in higher education institutions
- enhance their ability to utilise a wide variety of approaches and methods for teaching and assessing in practice
- prepare students for the challenges of role transition and the development of the educational roles of the future.
On successful completion of the course; Postgraduate Certificate in Health and Social Care Education, students will be able to:

- critically examine their developing knowledge and understanding of educational theory, whilst developing originality in the application of this knowledge required for future/enhanced roles as educators

Skill

Action learning sets are learning support groups enabling students to link the theory from the modules and encouraging its application to educational practice through the Patchwork Text. The induction days will orientate students to the Patchwork Text, which are produced using a reflective framework to be analysed at each meeting. These texts plus the students' reflections upon the experience will be included in the portfolio assignment for Developing the Role of the Qualified Teacher through Reflection.
A problem-based learning (PBL) approach is used in Course Design and Planning to enable students to engage in the process of developing an educational programme. Students will not only experience PBL as a reality but this approach encourages a creative, individual and challenging strategy for course design.
