The MSc in Wound Healing and Tissue Repair is a three-year, inter-disciplinary, part-time, distance learning course.

The course attracts healthcare professionals from fields such as nursing, medicine, pharmacy, podiatry and the pharmaceutical industry, and offers the opportunity to study at a distance alongside an international group of professionals from countries around the world.
It aims to enable you to explore and analyse existing and developing theories and concepts that underpin wound healing and tissue repair so facilitating professional and personal growth, building upon your educational and vocational experience and developing your ability to become a life-long learner.

Students are required to attend a five-day study block in year one and year two, otherwise no further attendance is required.
The on-campus study blocks will consist of: introduction to e-learning on the Internet and using your individual home page; introduction to study skills, library resources and tutorial support; introduction to course work and assignment briefs; lead lectures – introduction to module content and theory; group interactive sessions - via workshop, discussions, case presentation; private and group tutorials; course committee meetings - providing an on-going evaluation of the course.

Between the annual study blocks, students are supported by online personal and group tutorials, and personal tutorials by email or telephone. In addition, there are dedicated distance learning library support staff to help ensure you can access necessary databases and full-text journals. The online information and resources are constantly updated for students to access through a virtual learning environment.

Economies, environments, societies and cultures are increasingly heterogeneous, but also interconnected and interdependent. Thus, many complex factors and processes simultaneously operating from the local to the global spheres affect the health of individuals, populations and nations. As these factors change, so do the challenges and opportunities for improving health locally and globally.

The global health programme at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Global Health Research develops students’ understanding of the complex determinants of health and their potential solutions in order to help them contribute to the improvement of health and the achievement of health equity and social justice worldwide. With this purpose, this programme offers an inter-multi and cross-disciplinary approach to health and ill-health. This specialisation involves studying the design and synthesis of complex molecular systems, and addressing challenging problems, such as wound healing and drug delivery. At the interface of biology and chemistry you will get a solid foundation in modern synthetic organic chemistry, physical organic chemistry and chemical biology. This multidisciplinary knowledge is essential for industries of the future, where chemistry and the life sciences become more and more intertwined. As a Chemistry for Life Master's student you will obtain the knowledge and skills you need to develop the next generation of medicines.

Programme courses

The Master’s specialisation in Chemistry for Life is taught at the Faculty of Science. It has a course load of 120 EC* (two years). The track consists of:
- 15 EC of compulsory courses
- 15 EC of electives
- Two internships of in total total 90 EC

Societal Master's tracks

Career prospects

Career perpectives of chemical biologists are very broad: our graduates work in the pharmaceutical, biotech and life sciences industries. High tech start-ups are also an option. There are numerous opportunities for PhD positions, including at the national Graduate School in Chemical Biology.
We stimulate our Master's students to develop a critical mind and a problem solving attitude. Some of them will become the next generation of top scientists, all of them will have a job within a few months after graduation:
- 40% become PhD students at a university
- 60% work at a research institute, in the (bio)chemical industry or in one of our spin-off companies
- A small proportion do not work in science but for instance as a policymaker at a governmental organisation.

Teaching focuses on the principles of promoting skin integrity in patients of all ages. Topics covered include: the burden of chronic wounds: diabetic foot disease, venous disease, pressure injury, assessment and diagnostic techniques, barriers to healing; clinical, lifestyle, organisational, wound physiology, and microbiology, cutaneous manifestations of systemic disease, inflammatory skin conditions, skin/wound infections, chronic oedema, psychological impact of wounds and associated skin conditions, patient education and compliance.

Core skills for specialist practice will be developed including decision making and problem solving skills, leadership and communication skills, information retrieval, critical analysis and application of evidence based practice, audit and research methods and an ability to support and influence service improvement amongst others.

The MSc Clinical Skin Integrity & Wound Management tailors knowledge, skills and assessment to the needs of NHS employers and the global healthcare sector to provide a highly relevant curriculum that facilitates the development of specialist practitioners and increases student’s employability.

The course is designed to provide clinicians with a better understanding of core clinical skin integrity and wound management. With a focus on the understanding of health, illness and medicine in a globalised world, this programme allows you to engage with contemporary debates about old ills and emerging diseases, and explore both traditional forms of healing and modern medical technologies.

You’ll examine key questions in current medical anthropology from the perspective of both medical and social sciences, and address relevant issues, such as the way encounters between patients and professional healers are negotiated in varied cultural settings; the importance of political, economic and historical analysis to an understanding of the body; and the health-related effects of globalisation.

Intended for a diverse range of students, this distinctive and interdisciplinary programme will complement your background in anthropology or health sciences

Programme structure

Teaching combines lectures, seminars and tutorials, and you will produce essays and assessed coursework.

The programme works in close collaboration with the Global Public Health Unit and other subjects in the School of Social & Political Science.

This MSc aims to provide sufficient knowledge of advanced medically related anthropology to enable students to utilise anthropological approaches in a range of research and professional roles. We train students in theoretical and applied aspects of the field, preparing them for careers that engage with and impact real-world contexts.

Degree information

Students new to social science develop an understanding of a social science approach to the experience of illness and health, and gain skills required in social anthropological field research and analysis. For students with previous social science training, the programme focuses on the dimensions particular to medical anthropology.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

Open to medical graduates (MBCHB, MBBS and equivalents), Post MRCS or equivalent and those with ATLS provider or instructor status, this innovative, highly practical and academically rigorous programme is aimed at those committed to a career devoted to improving trauma care. The part-time taught component (Part 1) consists of 5 clinical and 2 research methods modules which are delivered in 5 and 3 day blocks respectively. The clinical modules are arranged sequentially to take the students from immediate management, critical care, and on to healing recovery in the first 3 modules. The subsequent modules are devoted to Military Operational Surgical Training & Combat Surgery, delivered at the ADMST.

The first of the research methods modules focuses upon effective literature searches, critical appraisal of literature and the development of a portfolio reflecting this, and the second is dedicated to the preparation of a dissertation proposal. Part 2 is the completion of the dissertation itself.

Key Features of the Trauma Surgery (Military) Programme

Trauma care is one of the most rapidly evolving areas in modern medicine. Improvements in the immediate (damage control) resuscitation have improved survival, underpinned by the lessons learnt from the most effective trauma systems in the developed world. Post-injury reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation now offer potentials for recovery which were previously inconceivable. Thus a sound grasp of the theory and practice of trauma surgery make this one of the most rewarding fields of medical endeavour. The Trauma Surgery Programmes are constantly revised and refreshed in the light of new developments. The Programmes are unique in course design, delivery and assessment with the innovative use of increasingly sophisticated simulation methods to enhance learning. Previous student experience has confirmed that these Programmes offer a robust practical and academic springboard for those committed to a career in trauma care.

Modules

The Programme is part time with Part 1 comprising 5 clinical (20 credit) and 2 non-clinical (10 credit) modules and Part 2 being the dissertation. Each of the Part 1 modules follows a similar pattern: students attend the Morriston Teaching Centre (with some sessions also delivered in the Anatomy Suite of the Grove Building) for the duration of the module, 5 days for the clinical and 3 for the non-clinical modules.

This will be achieved through a year of research in a relevant area of tissue engineering identified after discussion with Swansea academic staff. Working with two academic supervisors you will undertake a comprehensive literature survey which will enable the formulation of an experimental research programme.

As a student on the MSc by Research Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine course, you will be given the relevant laboratory training to undertake the research program. The research will be written up as a thesis that is examined. You will also be encouraged to present your work in the form of scientific communications such as journals and conference poster presentation.

You will explore the role of animals in healing, how animals play a key role throughout different human cultures and religions. You will also explore how humans co-exist and impact on animals through conservation, exploitation and as companions, as well as debating the ethical issues surrounding anthroozoology.

The programme will provide you with the required knowledge and skills to develop practical solutions for existing and emerging problems centred around animal-human interactions. Offering a stepping stone into careers within conservation, pet behaviour counselling, zoo education, animal training, animal charities and animal assisted therapy or for further Postgraduate study.

The Masters by Research in Anthrozoology includes 60 credits of taught modules, including core modules of the human-animal bond and the research process and optional modules such as wildlife conflict, contemporary issues in animal welfare science and reflection on practice. Modules tend to be taught in two day blocks. This means that the teaching is condensed to allow Masters study to occur round other commitments in our students' lives.

These modules advance your skills in critically evaluating current research, and develop your abilities in research design and statistical analysis allowing you to effectively design and carry out an original dissertation research project that will make a valuable contribution to the field of Anthrozoology. Course details

You enhance your technical skills in various core areas of civil engineering that are in demand in the construction industry, such as advanced geotechnics and river and coastal engineering. You also further develop your conceptual understanding of critical aspects of structural engineering, such as advanced structural analysis and design, and become familiar with complex analysis and design techniques, modelling the causes and solutions of problems involving the real behaviour of structures. You also acquire an advanced knowledge and understanding of the design of structures under dynamic and earthquake conditions. Advanced project planning and visualisation methods, such as building information modelling, are also integrated into the course. The 60-credit dissertation gives you the opportunity to conduct a supervised research project developing original knowledge in a specific area of civil or structural engineering. The programme structure is divided into a combination of 10 and 20-credit taught modules, delivered over two semesters. By successfully completing these modules, you proceed to a 60-credit research project.

Starting salaries for new graduate civil and structural engineers can reach £32,000, increasing to £70,000 when a senior level is reached (prospects.ac.uk, 2015).

Professional accreditation

Our MSc Civil and Structural Engineering is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (representing the ICE, IStructE, IHE and CIHT) as a technical master's. This means it meets the requirements for further learning for Chartered Engineer (CEng) under the provisions of UK-SPEC for candidates who have already acquired a CEng-accredited BEng (Hons) undergraduate first degree.

Teaching

You learn through lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. Lectures provide the theoretical underpinning, while practical sessions give you the opportunity to put theory into practice, applying your knowledge to specific problems.

Tutorials and seminars provide a context for interactive learning and allow you to explore relevant topics in depth. Some of the modules require using specialised technical software and practical computer-based sessions are timetabled.

In addition to the taught sessions, you undertake a substantive MSc research project.
