Course detail

Subjects reflect areas of professional practice and are designed to provide students with an understanding of the management of Health, Safety and Risk. They also take a strategic view of this, and of related areas such as Corporate Social Responsibility, Ethics and the Environment. In addition to the legal perspectives students will be encouraged to consider the management, human and psychological factors essential to the successful implementation of Health, Safety and Risk strategy.

A key feature of the Diploma stage of the course is the incorporation of a work based project. In the course of this project, students are given the opportunity to demonstrate the ability to apply their knowledge and understanding of health, safety and risk to a current work related problem or issue.

The course is studied online. This flexible approach will provide the opportunity for those working in the field, and who wish to attain a formal management qualification in this area, to study and also maintain their career path.

Online Learning: Online delivery is through the University's Virtual Learning Environment CampusMoodle, where you will have access to the same teaching material as on-campus students. There will be the opportunity for you to interact with tutors and fellow students from around the world. The Part Time Executive and Online Learning courses are delivered simultaneously so all students work on the same modules.

Placements and accreditations

The significance of disasters is increasing due to variables such as population growth, climate change, urbanisation and global connectivity. The impact of natural disasters such as the Tsunami on the Far East and Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans is still being felt in those regions. Human initiated disasters such as the Twin Towers collapse and the Madrid and London bombings have had an enormous impact on security systems and world travel. Biologically based disasters such as SARS and bird flu similarly have had worldwide impact.

The MSc in Humanitarian Logistics and Emergency Management is a unique programme and is the first in the world to combine the academic disciplines of humanitarian logistics and emergency management. The programme builds on the established strengths and reputation of Ireland and in particular Irish Aid, in delivering humanitarian assistance to those in need.

The organizations providing the first phase of disaster response need the capacity and capabilities to deliver goods and services quickly to those impacted by an event. This is often under difficult circumstances in foreign locations and across cultures. The organisations involved in delivering the aid also need to be responsive in order to quickly provide resources required for the basic necessities of survival in the critical period immediately after an event in order to reduce further loss of life. This programme is a multi-disciplinary programme that provides high quality academic education and professional competencies for personnel working in or intending to work in the area of humanitarian relief to deal with the matters outlined. The programme will provide humanitarian professionals with the competences to work effectively and efficiently in challenging environments.

Programme Assessment

You will be part of a large postgraduate community in a vibrant and friendly department. -The work placement takes place after postgraduate students have successfully completed the taught portion of their degree.
-The responsibility for finding the placement is with the student. We cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it.

You will study the underpinning scientific principles of both natural hazards (eg hurricanes, storms and tornadoes, flooding, landslides, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis and radon gas emissions) and human-induced disasters (eg terrorism, explosions and oil tanker accidents).

You will also cover modern disaster management strategies and planning techniques for the mitigation (eg structural measures and education), preparation (eg early warning), response (eg search and rescue) and recovery (eg insurance) phases.

You will also undertake active research in one or more of your chosen hazard areas.

- HES 513- Occupational Health & Safety Law

This course will provide students with a fundamental understanding of issues that can impact upon private sector employers under the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Act, including rule making, the duty to comply with standards, General Duty Clause, requirements at multi-employer worksites, record-keeping, employer and employee rights, refusal to work and whistle blower protection, hazard communication, voluntary safety and health audits, inspections and investigations, citations, criminal enforcement, and judicial review. Module Details

You will study several key topics and complete a four-month individual project in which you apply your knowledge to a significant, in-depth piece of analysis or design. Projects are tailored to your individual interests and may take place in our own laboratories or, by agreement, in industry. Experts from Industry (STS Nuclear) deliver part of the course as visiting lecturers, bringing professional expertise and industry-relevant material to the programme.

Here are the units you will study:

Power Systems Technology: This unit provides an in-depth overview of contemporary electrical power systems. It covers the elements of electrical power systems including generation, transmission and distribution in the mixed energy source paradigm.

Electrical Machines and drives: Provides an in-depth overview of the operational principles and physical design of DC and AC electrical machines as well as broad understanding of concepts of power electronics and power electronic converters, so that you can describe their application and selection criteria. You will develop an understanding of the issues present in converter design, including the impact of physical layout and heat dissipation.

Energy Systems: Focuses on the techniques and principles of operation of thermodynamics and combustion systems, as well as the provision and management of energy. It also focuses on power generation and combined systems, BioMass processers application of heat and fluid transfer.

Renewable and Alternative Energy: Provides an in-depth coverage of the principles of renewable and alternative energy systems: Winds, Solar, BioMass, Geothermal, Fuel Cells, Hydrogen Technologies and Nuclear Energy.

Nuclear Technology: A study of nuclear engineering including the theory of atomic and nuclear physics, methods and benefits of generating electricity from nuclear power plants, and the effects of ionising radiation. The nuclear fuel cycle and the associated environmental impacts are also considered. The development of international guidance on nuclear and radiological safety and a comparison of national regulatory structures are analysed. The importance of safety cultures, safety behaviours and safety cases is a key element throughout this module.

Energy Management: The unit is specifically designed to provide the students with the basic of economical analysis and evaluation of energy projects and asset management as well as risk and hazard assessment, comprising legislation, hazard identification and quantification, quantified risk analyses, methods of elimination/mitigation, economic appraisal of integrated renewable, and petroleum projects; with numerous pertinent case studies.

Programme Assessment

You will be taught through a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials (personal and academic), laboratory sessions and project work. The course has a strong practical emphasis and you will spend a significant amount of time in our Energy, Power systems and Electronic laboratories.

The Master of Disaster Management offers students a variety of knowledge and skills to implement a holistic approach to managing unexpected events such as disasters and emergencies. It focuses on key issues of disaster resilience and disaster risk reduction, ensuring you are equipped to apply this knowledge to planning frameworks, policy-making and devising solutions in different and complex environments.

Programme structure

Taught (120 points or 180 points)
Full-time or part-time

The Master of Disaster Management is a flexible programme – you can study full or part-time, and depending on your existing qualifications, will undertake either a 120-point (12 months full-time/four years part-time) or 180-point (18 months full-time/six-years part time) degree. As well as the three core courses, you’ll select from a variety of electives to suit your schedule and interests.

The programme also includes a research element (45 points), where you will address a topic relevant to disaster management. The MDisMgt research project develops your knowledge of how to support community resilience and the built environment after a disaster. It will help you demonstrate critical thinking and analytical skills, and give you the ability to independently solve a real-world issue in disaster settings.

Courses and electives

You’ll take three core courses (of 15 points each): Disaster Risk Management, Disaster Management and Resilience, and Project Management.

Depending on your degree (120 or 180 points), you’ll select two or six elective courses. Electives may include:
