The MCh enables experienced, qualified doctors to develop an evidence- based approach to health care practice and to obtain a postgraduate qualification whilst enhancing their surgical clinical expertise.

The programme has been designed in collaboration with senior surgeons and academics and is at the cutting edge of both contemporary surgical practice and research. It will allow you to extend your knowledge and skills to advanced levels within your specialist area of work. The clinical modules focus on practical skills in operative surgery with the use of interactive teaching aids and practical workshops.

Whichever pathway you choose, the programme will be delivered in partnership with Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust. Wrightington Hospital is recognised as a Centre of Excellence (Orthopaedic Surgery) and has clinical facilities / laboratories that will provide you with excellent learning opportunities.

What will I study?

This programme consists of three distinct 20 credit clinical modules, two 30 credit clinical research modules and a 60 credit dissertation. Topics covered will include: Specialist aspects of evidence based practice in surgery; Qualitative and quantitative research methods; Critiquing research findings; Writing a research proposal; Analysis of quantitative data; Systematic reviews; Research governance and ethics; Focus on a significant piece of investigative enquiry from conceptualisation through to completion.

How will I study?

The programme is delivered over two to three years, commencing in September each year. The academic year runs from September through to July, though the dissertation submission will be in September of the second year, with the option to defer the dissertation to the third year. You will experience a variety of teaching and learning strategies including lectures, seminars, individual and group tutorials and independent guided study.

An online Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is used for some components of the programme. The surgical modules have elements of practice-based learning and involve the completion of a log of practical experience which complements the course material. The dissertation allows you to focus on a significant piece of investigative enquiry from conceptualisation through to completion.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods include a research proposal, written assignments, completion of online activities and discussions, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), clinical log books, seminar presentations and a dissertation.

The programme team consists of experienced academic staff from across Edge Hill University and expert clinicians from Wrightington Hospital. This collaborative approach provides a team of high calibre individuals to support your learning. Additionally, leading surgeons from related specialities are invited as guest speakers on the surgical modules. The MCh Orth Course in Dundee (accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of England) is a clinically-based Masters degree that encompasses taught, clinical attachment and research elements, which provide orthopaedic surgeons with in-depth knowledge of the latest advances in surgical and biomechanical techniques.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, to reflect the multi-disciplinary aspect of the research carried out at IMAR, where the majority of the MCh Orth projects are conducted, the respective staff were returned into Unit of Assessment 25 (General Engineering - Biomedical Engineering) and Unit of Assessment 8 (Primary Care and Other Community Based Clinical Subjects) where 90% and 85% of our quality profile was deemed of international class. This is an excellent outcome taking into consideration that IMAR was only established in 2003 in support of the MCh Orth course.

How you will be assessed

The programme assessment is made up of three elements: two written MCQs (one per semester) using the latest e-assessment technology and iPads, OSCE and a thesis. Candidates will be examined orally on the subject of thesis by a committee consisting of a convenor, an external and internal examiners. Students are required to pass each element to qualify for the award of the degree. There is no resit facility.

Anaesthetics, Pain Medicine and Intensive Care (APMIC) is a unique medical specialty. It involves hands on manipulation of physiology and real-time pharmacological intervention to effectively and safely manage patients in all parts of the hospital. Practice varies from treating life-threatening illnesses within the ICU, to relieving pain in the ward and clinic, to safely anaesthetising patients in the operating theatre. The application of basic science can be seen to directly affect clinical care and thus provides an excellent environment for translational research. As healthcare becomes more centralised in larger Academic Health Science Networks, it is becoming apparent that positions in prestigious institutions require more than standard clinical training programmes. Evidence of additional training, particularly in academic work, is required to demonstrate an individual’s competitive edge. However, not everyone will want or have the opportunity to complete a full PhD training programme. This Masters in Research course will provide training and qualification in all the fundamental principles of Anaesthetic, Pain Medicine and Intensive care research. Based in the Department of Surgery and Cancer in the Faculty of Medicine, the stream provides an opportunity to learn, in a supportive and stimulating environment, from leaders in the field who are actively engaged in research.

The emphasis of the course will be to provide a thorough training in Anaesthetics, Pain Medicine and Intensive Care (APMIC) research from fundamental principles of molecular mechanisms toward clinical basic principles. Through the two research-based projects students will be exposed to the latest developments in the field and will gain first-hand experience in applying the methods they are taught to research questions in Anaesthetics, Pain Medicine and Intensive Care.

Individuals who complete the course will have developed the ability to:

-Understand fundamental principles of molecular mechanisms of APMIC
-Describe advanced physiology and pharmacology of APMIC
-Master principles of translation of research and research techniques
-Gain detailed knowledge and understanding of the essential facts, concepts, principles, techniques and theories relevant to the students' chosen research project
-Develop management and communication skills, including problem definition, project design, decision processes, written and oral reports and scientific publications
-This will be achieved through completing two research projects, supplemented with a course of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and technical workshops. Please note that Postgraduate Diplomas and Certificates for part-completion are not available for this course.

The stream will be based in the section of APMIC, Department of Surgery and Cancer on the Chelsea and Westminster Campus of Imperial College London.

Each student chooses two projects over the course of the year from the wide range available. Students are guided in this choice by the course organiser and their personal tutor and are advised to take contrasting projects to ensure a balanced training.

They are organized across our campuses of Paris and Shanghai according to the market specificities of those 2 locations. While in France students will be exposed to the traditional art of perfume making through an immersive experience thanks to our Olfactory Lab and our seminar titled “Parfums a la Francaise”. During their rotation in Shanghai participants will discover the booming segment of skin care for men and explore the different invasive and non-invasive plastic surgery techniques. Finally, from inception to graduation, and regardless of their location, Postgraduate students of IFA Paris will benefit from the support of a unique department called the “Career and Alumni Center”. Our Perfume and Cosmetics Management course covers a wide range of modules clustered into five main module groupings:

Marketing and Management:

This grouping encompasses a series of modules that will be sequentially planned based on the structure of a marketing plan. The overall body of knowledge acquired by the students will prepare them to:

Analyse complex marketing challenges based on practical case studies
Allocate resources strategically to achieve pre-determined objectives
Craft brand DNAs allowing for the achievement of a sustainable competitive advantage

Business Issues:

The capacity to listen and interpret markets’ signals is a key component of today’s managers. It needs to be continuously cultivated. Within this module grouping students will discover the idiosyncrasies of the fashion industry from an economic and financial view point.

Distribution and Retail:

New technologies are shaping the cosmetics and perfume offering of the 21st century in ways that do not always relate to product innovation. A large part of the most recent innovations concern the distribution and retail sector, with interesting cross-overs between the Fashion and the Cosmetics and Perfume industries.

Cosmetics and Perfume Environment:

Is perfume still a luxury? Are socially responsible brands more impactful? How is the impact of the fashion industry in the development of the cosmetics and perfume industry?... This module grouping will challenge students and develop their critical thinking approach in regards with the industry.

Cosmetics and Perfume Lifestyle:

While our MBA Program does not aim at creating technicians we believe it is important for our students to be totally immersed within the environment of cosmetics and perfumes. This is why we have devised a series of groundbreaking seminars and workshops: to allow our students to experience the specificities of the future industry they’ll be working for. From a week in an olfactory lab to test and create perfumes to a foray into the crafting of perfumes “A La Francaise”, everything has been devised to provide a groundbreaking experiential learning.

The Foundation workshop will be taught over 2 full weeks (75 Hours) and comprise the following modules:

Infectious diseases remain a major contributor to the global burden of disease, with HIV, malaria, measles, diarrhoeal disease and respiratory infections responsible for over 50% of premature deaths worldwide. However the availability of resources for interventions is limited in comparison with the scale of the challenges faced. Over the last decade there has been increasing recognition of the value of epidemiological analysis and mathematical modelling in aiding the design and interpretation of clinical trials from a population perspective and, downstream, to guide implementation, monitoring and evaluation of intervention effectiveness. The Epidemiology, Evolution and Control of Infectious Diseases (EECID) stream provides a research-based training in infectious disease epidemiology, mathematical modelling and statistics, genetics and evolution, and computational methods. The focus of the course is inter-disciplinary, with a strong applied public health element.

Based in the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology in the Faculty of Medicine, the stream provides an opportunity to learn, in a supportive and stimulating environment, from leaders in the field who are actively engaged in research and advise leading public health professionals, policy-makers, governments, international organisations and pharmaceutical companies, both nationally and internationally, on a range of diseases include pandemic influenza, HIV, TB, malaria, polio and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).

This stream is linked to the Wellcome Trust 4-year PhD programme in the Epidemiology, Evolution and Control of Infectious Diseases which includes up to 5 funded studentships each year. Up to 3 further 1+3 MRC studentships are also available each year.

The emphasis of the course will be to provide a thorough training in epidemiology, mathematical modelling and statistics, and genetics and evolution, as applied to infectious diseases. This research-orientated training will incorporate taught material, practical sessions in statistical software (R) and C programming as well as wider generic training in the research and communication skills needed to interact with public health agencies. Through the two research-based projects students will be exposed to the latest developments in the field and will gain first-hand experience in applying the methods they are taught to questions of public-health relevance.

Individuals who complete the course will have developed the ability to:

-Describe the biology, epidemiology and control of major global infectious diseases
-Interpret and present epidemiological data
-Undertake statistical analysis of infectious disease data including applying modern methods for statistical inference
-Develop and apply mathematical models to understand infectious disease dynamics, evolution and control
-Analyse genetic data using modern techniques and interpret their relevance to infectious disease epidemiology
-Critically evaluate research papers and reports
-Write and defend research reports and publications
-Communicate effectively through writing, oral presentations and IT to facilitate further study or employment in epidemiology and public health
-Exercise a range of transferable skills

This will be achieved through a course of lectures, seminars, tutorials and technical workshops. Please note that Postgraduate Diplomas and Certificates for part-completion are not available for this course.

The stream will be based in the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology on the St Mary’s campus of Imperial College London.
