The University of Brighton is one of the UK's largest teacher training universities, rated ‘outstanding’ in our last Ofsted inspection.

This course leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) for the 11–16 age range which enables you to be employed as a qualified teacher in secondary schools in England and Wales. The course also offers enrichment opportunities to teach the 16–18 age phase.

You'll experience practical and theoretical modules that are based upon research-informed practice by the route leader, Dr Gary Stidder, who is an established academic and active researcher in the field of physical education.

Our course focuses on an alternative approach to teaching physical education, emphasising physical activities and non-traditional team games alongside the usual competitive team games. It also includes lifestyle activities that have a wide appeal to a broad population of pupils.

You will have access to excellent resources and gain 120 days of practical experience in two of around 250 schools with whom we have partnerships.

Course structure

All teaching takes place at the School of Sport and Service Management, based in Eastbourne, where there are extensive sports facilities such as six badminton court-sized sports halls, two gymnasiums, plus a fitness suite, Astro turf pitch and swimming pool.

When studying with us at the university, you’ll experience and learn how to teach practical physical education through The A-list of physical activities. These include physical activities considered to be less conventional compared to more established types of activities. The A-list includes the following non-conventional physical activities: 

  • Alternative – Physical activities that depart from or challenge traditional norms and are considered to be non-traditional in a UK context such as tchouckball, kinball and korfball.
  • Adapted – Physical activities suited to pupils with additional learning needs but that can also be practiced by all pupils within secondary schools such as boccia, goalball and new age kurling.
  • Artistic – Physical activities related to cultural and artistic forms of dance.
  • Aesthetic – Physical activities that are creative and involve a combination of movements requiring precision, fluency and control such as urban gymnastics, cheerleading and trampolining.
  • Aquatic – Physical activities that take place in or on the water such as swimming, synchronised swimming, water aerobic dancing, water polo, life-saving and personal survival.
  • Athletic – Physical activities that require physical skill, agility and stamina such as street surfing.
  • Adventurous – Physical activities that require precise problem-solving and decision making skills such as orienteering and climbing.
  • Aerobic – Physical activities that are sustained and require low to high intensity such as jogging, rowing and cycling.
  • Anaerobic – Physical activities that are non-endurance activities involving speed strength and power such as sprinting, jumping, and throwing.

The university works in partnership with schools and colleges to provide a high quality programme of support, ensuring a sound relationship between theory and practice. You will benefit from undertaking two placements in two schools or colleges, spending two-thirds of your year teaching, under supervision. You'll also have the opportunity to visit additional schools or colleges as part of the Peer Observation programme.

Our tutors and mentors will advise and support you throughout each placement. You will receive comprehensive feedback during this time, enabling you to see what you are doing well and where you might need to improve.

You will have the opportunity to organise group activities which reflect contemporary expectations of physical education teachers and the individual needs of pupils from diverse backgrounds. 

The campus is excellently equipped with multimedia training materials, giving you the opportunity to develop your confidence and competence in the use of ICT. Our multimedia suites are regularly updated to keep up with technological advancements in classroom teaching provision. 

Activities which you may take part in or organise yourself include:

  • inclusive festivals, in which you prepare a series of activities for pupils with moderate, profound and multiple learning difficulties. Activities will include boccia, new age kurling, goalball, parachute games and dance
  • outdoor adventure days allow you to facilitate a day of on-site outdoor and adventurous activities for pupils
  • active student volunteer programmes give you the opportunity to provide out-of-school-hours activities for local primary school pupils. The activities include swimming, lifestyle activities, trampolining and gymnastics. 

Placements

Ofsted identify our approach to training in schools as a key strength of this course, with an excellent balance between university tuition and school-based training.

You will spend a minimum of 120 days on school-based activities, with your training shared between the university and the partner school. 

Your school-based training will include observing teachers, working with individual pupils and groups of pupils, team teaching and independent teaching. Your training will also entail completing specific subject tasks and developing your knowledge of school policy and effective practices.

You will maintain a professional training portfolio and be supported to review your work critically and analytically as well as to set appropriately challenging targets. We will also develop an action plan with you to identify strengths, development needs and actions, so that your practice is continually developing.

Careers and employability

Graduates of the course are equipped with the skills and knowledge to become confident and competent secondary-school teachers.

As well as gaining a PGCE, you will be assessed against the national Teachers’ Standards in order to be recommended for the award of Qualified Teacher Status.

Most students gain employment in schools across the UK very soon after they have completed the course and achieved the teaching qualifications. Many former students have subsequently become curriculum leaders and senior managers in schools.

Students on this course can choose to progress to one of our Education MAs after completing the PGCE.

The aim of the course is to prepare students for teaching in a variety of present-day school situations.

Emphasis is placed on developing teaching competences in the full range of National Curriculum requirements for Physical Education and Health Education. The main elements of the Physical Education course are based on

games;
athletics;
dance;
swimming;
gymnastics;
outdoor activities.

In Health Education the elements are

substance use and misuse;
sex education;
family-life education;
health-related exercise;
food and nutrition;
personal hygiene;
the environmental and psychological aspects of health education.

The Physical Education course also includes extra-curricular activities, safe practice, and first aid.

All applicants must have at least three coaching qualifications in the specific areas of activity in National Curriculum Physical Education, i.e., hockey, netball, rugby, soccer, gymnastics, dance, swimming, tennis, athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities, basketball, and cricket.

The course also involves professional studies through which students will gain an understanding of whole-school issues, counselling, personal and social education, and school experience.

The Physical Education/Health Education course is open to students holding a degree containing a physical education element of not less than 50%.

This programme is carefully designed to prepare you fully for the physical and mental challenges you will face, giving you the skills and stamina necessary to become an assured and high quality teacher of this subject.

You will experience professional training, delivered to the highest of standards, which immerses you in the very latest teaching and learning pedagogies. The programme aims to develop reflective and analytical skills as well as providing practical experience in planning effective lessons and learning strategies, hands-on classroom experience, and opportunities to further deepen your own subject knowledge.

If you have a degree in or featuring Physical Education, want to inspire a love of sport in secondary school pupils aged 11 to 16 and are passionate about boosting their physical and mental abilities, this is the programme for you.

What will I study?

You’ll start with an extensive subject knowledge and understanding audit, to identify your main strengths and weaknesses, and enable your tutor to focus on your individual development needs.

During 12 weeks of study on campus, you’ll develop:

- Knowledge of essential educational theory.
- Awareness of appropriate and innovative teaching and assessment methods, including theoretical and physical challenges and games.
- Strategies to develop trainees’ abilities in a wide range of sports, including dance, gymnastics, athletics, swimming and various outdoor and adventurous activities.
- Understanding of the curriculum.
- Ability to plan lessons effectively.
- Good working knowledge of the latest ICT tools and software used in schools.
- Greater subject knowledge and professional and academic skills.
- Wider awareness of your role within the teaching profession through study of professional values.

How will I study?

A combination of academic study, group discussion and reflection, and practical, work-based learning in the classroom will give you all the knowledge and skills you need to become a creative and innovative teacher. The programme aims to develop a reflective and a critically analytical approach to education.

You will spend 26 weeks on placement in schools, colleges and other settings, putting your training into practice through assisting in and taking responsibility for classes, and working alongside mentors and peers to further your professional development. The focus initially is on observation and supporting teaching and learning. Your teaching timetable will increase as your training progresses and you become more confident and competent in the classroom.

You will also have the chance to develop your physical abilities and build strong support networks with your fellow trainees on a residential visit to a specialist outdoor pursuits centre as part of the course.

How will I be assessed?

A balanced combination of coursework and observed classroom experience will be assessed against academic criteria at Level 7 and the Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) Standards. Various other tasks will enable you to show your competence in ICT and other areas of PE.

Before the end of your PGCE you will need to complete a Career Entry and Development Profile (CEDP) which acts as a useful bridge between your initial teacher training programme and your Induction Year as a Newly Qualified Teacher.

You will be taught by a dedicated team of knowledgeable, experienced, friendly and supportive tutors who have the welfare of their trainees as a number one priority.

All of the tutors on the programme are experienced teachers of Physical Education who will model good practice and encourage you to develop your own teaching style.

What are my career prospects?

Successful completion of this programme will allow you to gain QTS status and progress onto employment as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) at secondary school level in Physical Education.
