This is a creative, project-based course focusing on the practical and theoretical study of product design and its relationship to interaction. As an advanced product designer, this course supports your continued development and will refine your practice in interaction and user-centred product design.

The course explores academic theories as well as industry practice within interactive media, digital arts, entertainment and product design; and is a combination of two separate fields: product design and interactive media.

In Interactive Product Futures you will focus on user-centred design processes and research and analyse “user interaction” as your primary focus. The emphasis is on technology-mediated communication between humans and objects or spaces, allowing you to apply design and apply technological solutions to people’s infinite needs. You will also examine how technology gives personality to objects, and thereby how to ensure technology and design are more empathetic to people and their behaviours.

In the early units of the course you will be given short project briefs in which to design, implement, test and evaluate solutions in the form of an interactive product. Each project brief may take the form of an online or offline product; for example: an online quiz, an e-commerce type application, a toy. This is also an opportunity to produce a series of creative works within the specialisation of rapid prototyping (3D printing), animation, game design, web design, installation art, projection mapping, creative coding, computation design and entertainment media. The aim is to provide you with the opportunity to develop a software solution to a given problem, or aspect of a larger problem.

You will be encouraged to experiment with new ways of working with objects/scenarios and their integration with technology both creatively and collaboratively, and to apply emerging and existing technological solutions through personal fabrication, research and the experimental application of technology.

The course promotes cross disciplinary thinking as an approach to product design, so that the relationship between interactivity, artefacts, environments and the systems and organisations in which they operate can be re-examined.

By studying the course you will develop your creative design skills to innovate and influence product and interaction design practice and realise the commercial potential of your design proposals.

Through the Business and Innovation unit you will have the opportunity to explore the generation of innovative new business models that will help to shape your emerging project concept.

The Technology Issues unit encourages you to engage and explore emerging new technologies as well as skills in scripting and coding, first within a group, then as a cross-disciplinary, and finally in an individual project.

Through the Research Process unit, you will explore academic theoretical frameworks and research methodologies and their application within industry practice.

In both the Technology Issues and Concept and Prototyping units, youwill explore the dialogue between product and user, the function, usability and forms, flow and creativity and user experiences.

The course will culminate in your final Major Project.

The Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) Program at UBC is a twenty-five month professional program leading to entry to practice and is accredited by Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC). In the UBC MPT program, students experience the breadth and depth of the profession with 45 weeks of academic course work and a total of 1080 “hands-on” clinical hours. Students experience a diverse, inclusive, and evidence-based curriculum. The course content is updated annually to reflect recent research findings and current best practice. The teaching and learning practices in the MPT Program are based on recent education research and best practice in adult teaching and learning.

The MPT Program embraces innovative teaching and learning approaches that align with the curricular vision and goals, including technology-enhanced teaching and learning and simulation; interprofessional learning; and community-based learning. Faculty members within the Department are acknowledged throughout Canada, and internationally, as leaders in Physical Therapy research and include a Canada Research Chair, as well as Michael Smith and CIHR Scholars. The MPT Program is taught by a complement of faculty members and expert clinicians, with high instructor-to-student ratios in clinical skills courses.

Students experience six clinical placements in diverse aspects of clinical care such as acute, outpatient, geriatrics, interprofessional (including rural and paediatrics), and rehabilitation for various populations such as stroke, spinal cord injury, head injury and others (as well as an option for a research placement). In addition, in partnership with Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health, UBC can place students in the only two student-led physiotherapy clinics in the province, which provide an outstanding opportunity for peer learning and interprofessional experience. Students have access to a vast number of clinical placement location possibilities in British Columbia ranging from large city centres to small communities. Students at the senior level have the option to request one “Out-of-Province” or International placement. Clinic site visits and patient interface workshops are offered throughout the curriculum exposing students to real patients while learning their theoretical skills (neuro; pediatric; shadow placements).

The entry-level MPT program is located in a state-of-the-art facility on the campus of the University of British Columbia in beautiful Vancouver. Cameras and large screen monitors in labs allow for all students to have the best seat in the house when observing demonstrations of even the most detailed subjects. Large lab spaces accommodate two students for every physiotherapy plinth. Additionally, students have access to a modern, well-equipped exercise gym in which to learn exercise testing and prescription.

Program Overview

Physical therapists specialize in the assessment and treatment related to movement. Common movement disorders result from impairment of the neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, respiratory or cardiovascular systems. Following assessment of their clients, physical therapists often use physical agents such as therapeutic exercise, heat, cold, and electrical stimulation to increase muscle strength and function, reduce pain, promote general health and fitness, and prevent disability. As specialists in movement dysfunction, physical therapists also provide expertise in human mobility, carefully analyzing gait patterns and prescribing treatment regimens or devices (such as braces, crutches, or wheelchairs) to enable clients to move independently through their environments.

The M.P.T. degree provides the professional education necessary to obtain a license to practice physical therapy. It differs from the advanced or research M.Sc. in Rehabilitation Sciences, which prepares practitioners with advanced research skills and requires completion and defense of a thesis.

The course programme will suit graduates in Sport Sciences or Physical Therapy who are interested in exercise rehabilitation in particular. It has been designed to be flexible and relevant to the student’s individual needs and interests, with a strong emphasis on the application of theory to professional practice. Within the modular structure all students undertake core/compulsory modules in:

Research Skills;
Independent Study (a one to one supervised programme of work leading to the development of the proposal for the Research Project);
Supervised Experience – a module tailored to the needs of the individual and could include directed work with a specified client group or individual patient;
Research Project relevant to the programme being studied.
Research Skills
Research Skills is a double credit taught module. Students study the broad nature of the research process that will allow them to complete, initially, an appropriate Independent Study (in which a research proposal for the Research Project is completed) and subsequently, a full Research Project. The module covers material relevant to the design and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative research. It also provides a broad understanding of the benefits and limitations of various research methods, research designs, data collection instruments and data analysis tools. Students are given the opportunity to develop their ability to be critically evaluative.

Specific content includes: Statistical issues in quantitative research and design; Simple and multiple (forced entry, moderated and mediated) regression analyses; Single factor analysis of variance with and without repeated measures; Two factor analysis of variance with and without repeated measures; Single factor and two factor multivariate analysis of variance (with and without repeated measures); Repeated measures analysis of variance using the multivariate solution; Doubly repeated measures analysis of variance; Analysis of covariance; Follow-up procedures for all of the above; Assumptions underpinning all of the above and available options for dealing with violations to these assumptions; Experiments and causal inference; External and construct validity; Experimental and quasi-experimental designs; Correlational and epidemiological research; Reliability and validity in quantitative and qualitative research; Issues in qualitative research and design; Interviews; Single case design and analysis; Observation; Narrative; Ethnography; grounded theory and discourse analysis.

Independent Study
The Independent Study should consist of a critical and concise review of the research literature pertaining to a particular research question. A rationale for the proposed research question must be provided, along with a sound methodology for exploring the research question, planned analyses, and expected outcomes. Further, anticipated problems such as resources, equipment, possible ethical issues, informed consent forms, a statement of feasibility of the project and expected costs must be discussed.

Supervised Experience
The content of this module will be largely student specific and include activities (workshops, directed reading, client based work) that will develop the individual’s personal applied support skills. Initially, students complete an individual self-assessment of their current skills/knowledge base and set personal goals to enable them to improve their applied support skills. All students will attend units (workshops) on Ethics in Research and consultancy, communication and counselling skills and how to conduct a needs assessment. Specific physiology and psychology workshops (e.g. Imagery) will also take place.

Students will complete a contract of intended activities agreed with their supervisor in the first four weeks of their programme of study. This contract may, where appropriate, include the intention to apply to British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) to commence a formally logged Supervised Experience.

A portfolio will then be developed; the portfolio records activities including meetings with supervisor, attendance at workshops, meetings and a plan of work with at least one client, and thought/evaluations of all meetings and workshops (i.e. evidence of reflective practice).

Overview and Format of the Research Project module
The Research Project is an independent piece of research, and acts as the culmination of the academic challenges faced by the student. The module comprises 60 credits (ie equivalent to three double modules) and will formally equate to some 600 hours of student time.

Specifically, this will involve a review of research evidence with the aim of formulating an appropriate research question, and will likely involve some refinement and pilot work. Once achieved, the student will implement a research design and method suited to the area of enquiry. The supervisor provides excellent expert guidance throughout the process.

Mono-disciplinary studies and interdisciplinary work, which might involve the student’s ongoing sport/exercise experience, will be encouraged. Each topic will normally involve data collection, analysis and interpretation and allow students to demonstrate their powers of imagination, initiative, independence and time management. Students will be expected to show a thorough knowledge of the relevant sources of information and the ability to use them with discrimination; to provide full references; to exercise sound and independent judgment; to structure work logically and to express themselves with clarity and precision.

In addition to the above, students also undertake compulsory modules in Clinical Exercise Physiology (including disease and aging), Exercise Psychology and Rehabilitation of the Injured Athlete. This latter module covers theoretical perspectives in sports injury rehabilitation; psychological response to sports injury; the role of confidence in injury and rehabilitation; exercise, training principles and biomechanics of rehabilitation; plus returning the athlete to competition; failure to rehabilitate; current trends in injury rehabilitation research and future research directions; and critical assessment of sports rehabilitation research.

The programme is delivered using a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, workshops, group activities, practical work, tutorials and role play. Each module comprises approximately 200 hours (including formal contact).

You will also have the opportunity to gain a REPs* accredited Level 2 Gym Instructor vocational qualification free of charge to supplement your MSc academic qualification. This will depend on prior learning and it is expected that MSc students on the Exercise Rehabilitation programme will be able to gain this qualification by carrying out approximately half the typical work load. This vocational qualification is a required qualification within the exercise referral industry.

The foundation programme importantly introduces you to your fellow students who will become a major part of your learning experience at Dundee and will continue to be part of your network of friends and business connections after you graduate.

Off-Campus Learning Events: The programme includes off campus learning events embedded in the modules of some of the modules. In the modern world finance takes an ever increasing role in business, development and the economy. The MFin International Finance programme provides you with the skills and training to play an important role in the finance sector and to develop a career in finance. To achieve this the programme provides you with the right mix of applied and theoretical skills to both understand the issues facing firms and how to deal with these issues.

This course is developed for students who have completed their undergraduate study and are now looking to develop their finance related skills so as to pursue a successful career in the finance sector.

We provide a fresh approach to International Finance that is suitable if you have studied economics, business management or accountancy before or if you are new to the subject. Around half of the students on the programme have a business background while the rest of the students come from a very wide range of non-business backgrounds. The programme has been designed with these students with non-business backgrounds in mind while still challenging students whose first degree has been a business related subject.

Distinguished Visitor Series: A feature of the programme is the Distinguished Visitor and Enterprise Gym Lecture Series. In the modern world marketing and finance takes an ever increasing role in business, development and the economy. The MSc Marketing and International Finance programme provides you with the skills and training to play an important role in a career in marketing and finance. To achieve this the programme provides you with the right mix of applied and theoretical skills to both understand the issues facing firms and how to deal with these issues.

This course is developed for students who have completed their undergraduate study and are now looking to develop their marketing and finance related skills so as to pursue a successful career in marketing.

We provide a fresh approach to marketing and finance that is suitable if you have already studied economics, business management or accountancy or if you are new to the subject. Around half of the students on the programme have a business background while the rest of the students come from a very wide range of non-business backgrounds. The programme has been designed with these students with non-business backgrounds in mind while still challenging students whose first degree has been a business related subject.

This is an intensive, full time programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) alongside your academic PGDE award. University-based study includes: a full time block of three weeks at the start of the course; one day per week until January; occasional week-long, full time study blocks between January and June and a number of conference days. A minimum of 120 days is spent in schools.


Placements are organised in our Partnership schools in the Greater Merseyside area. For the majority of the training you will gain your teaching experience in a “Home School” with a six week placement in an “alternative” school after Christmas. This innovative model ensures that you feel genuinely part of the staff whilst on school placement and can monitor and gain satisfaction from your impact on your pupils’ progress over time.

You will also be allocated a teacher mentor who will organise and supervise your school-based training. Your mentor will be supported by your LJMU tutor who will visit your school several times to monitor your progress. Additional professional development sessions are organised in school during placements.

Tutorial support is an important part of the LJMU learning process and you will receive a personalised service that will enable you to set targets and achieve your potential. Your personal tutor will support your academic and professional development and will meet with you formally during the year.


You will undertake a significant amount of independent study and preparation to support your course assignments and school-based work and should be prepared to work some evenings and weekends.

University-based training takes place at the IM Marsh campus just four miles from the city centre. Here you will find independent study spaces with IT facilities, a library, access to student welfare and support, a gym and other sports facilities plus a café and shop.

The MSc in Sustainable Operations Management is a vocationally based course that has been designed with input from businesses that are working to promote the growth and development of environmental and sustainable practices.

The MSc Sustainable Operations Management aims to provide very practical focussed learning of how sustainability and environmental impact reduction can be integrated with traditional operations management.

There is a particular focus on resource efficiency with core modules including monitoring and measuring, opportunities to improve energy and water efficiency of building services, renewable energy and emerging environmental technologies.

Students will also study and practice project management theories and techniques and Environmental Management Systems.

You will visit regional businesses on field trips to better understand sustainable practice in action and apply this to your own projects. From 2018, you will have access to the University’s landmark Engineering and Digital Technology Building, which is being designed to allow students to explore efficient building management.

The 1 year full time MSc course will be stimulating and interactive, making use of lectures, self-learning, workshops and hands-on projects.

You will be assigned a Personal Tutor from the start of your course who will work with you throughout your studies to help you achieve your academic best.

The knowledge we provide you with in these areas will give you all of the essential know-how on methods, tools and techniques to deliver in your career in Business Intelligence.

The modules will be focused on the practical application of theoretical concepts using a range of contemporary enterprise management knowledge systems.

The project work we have imbedded within the course has been chosen and developed based on real-world scenarios across a range of industry and government sectors and is specifically designed to:

Provide an essential link between your theoretical learning and real-world challenges
Create an environment where you decide the methods and tools best suited to the challenge based on what you have learnt
Recreate some of the challenges facing industry today and those very similar to what you will encounter in the workplace
Be adaptable to reflect new methods / tools and scenarios in this fast developing discipline
Be able upon completion of the projects to reference your experience in working with such challenges

Our facilities
You will undertake your workshops in training rooms that are bang up-to-date with design features, touch screen electronic white boards and high speed wifi; housed across three stunning Georgian mansions.

All of our current students love the learning environment, the culture, camaraderie and the fact that tutors know them by name so they are more than just a ‘face in the crowd’.

You will have access to the very best IT facilities in order to support your studies.

These range from computer labs to access to cloud analytics from the leading providers.

We will use software from the academic programs of the major enterprise I.T. vendors such as IBM and SAP as well as commonly used open source programs and frameworks.

From September 2018, many of the teaching sessions will take place in the purpose-built Engineering and Digital Technology building in the Bognor Regis campus.

What's more, you have lots of other facilities on this dedicated university campus including latest books, journals and online data in a truly modern library, an IT centre, a student zone complete with Costa Coffee, a gym and much more.

Where this can take you
The course has been designed to provide you with a very practical understanding of the issues associated with sourcing, curating, analysing and presenting data in business and other public sector and not-for-profit organisations. On completion of your MSc studies and successful graduation, you will have very transferable skills and can choose to move directly in to the workplace.

Our IT systems and devices are constantly creating data and the amount of data created and stored grows exponentially. Data, and in particular patterns and trends within data, have the ability to inform and provide valuable insights, that help us predict and diagnose specific outcomes. Whilst the amount of data grows, the science of gaining insights from this data grows with it. Industry, research institutions and government all seek to extract value from data to improve products and services, serve their customers better and run more operationally efficient organisations. Data Scientists use their mathematical, computational and presentational skills to mine data for value and their skills are highly sort after. There is a significant shortage of skilled Data Scientists and so there are many job opportunities available.
