Through practical placements, students will gain a unique insight into the developing local and international museum sector.

About this degree

This programme introduces the theories and practices of museology, emphasising their significance and relevance in the Gulf region and beyond. Key areas of museum studies are taught, such as collections management, museum, gallery and site management, exhibition development, visual studies, education and emerging digital technologies.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

Students take four core modules (75 credits), plus a combination of optional modules (either three modules at 15 credits each or one module at 15 credits plus one module at 30 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits).

Graduates of this programme will gain an in-depth historical and theoretical background in museums and cultural heritage as well as experience in a range of relevant technical skills. They will be trained in all aspects of museums work, including collections management, education and community outreach, emerging digital technologies, exhibition design and interpretation. Graduates will be familiar with regional and global cultural heritage practices.

Master of Social Work (MSW) programs prepare graduates for advanced professional practice in an area of concentration. The MSW program will prepare UAEU graduates to enter the job force as specialized practitioners, accepting leadership roles within the areas of health/mental health, criminal justice, applied research, policy analysis, community education, schools and in the planning and provision of social services in other areas. The Master of Social Work consists of 30 credit hours of specialized course-work and practicum for students with a Bachelor degree in Social Work (BSW). The MSW program also welcomes students with a bachelor degree in disciplines other than social work. However, for these students, the program of study will consist of foundation courses (30 credit hours) in year 1 and specialization courses (30 credit hours) in year 2 for a total of 60 credits hours.

‌•Practice in accordance with social work values and ethics that acknowledge the history and laws of UAE society.
‌•Practice in a culturally competent manner that promotes quality of life and well-being, human rights and social and economic justice, with diverse Arab, Muslim and expatriate populations of the UAE and GCC.

About this degree

This programme enables students to explore further the relevance of ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of mind and epistemology to contemporary educational issues and to bring philosophical thinking to bear on their own educational concerns including professional practice. The taught sessions consist primarily of presentation by the tutor or another speaker, often reviewing a range of positions and arguments on a topic (on occasion students may be invited in advance to make their own presentation to the group); and discussion, both as a whole class and in small groups, which is vital both to clarifying and being able to argue for your own position, and to understanding the positions and arguments of others. 

Assessment on the Philosophy MA modules is by means of a 5,000-word written essay.

The specialism in war reporting at Swansea comprises three modules: War Reporting, New Media Technology & Social Conflict, and Reporting Risk. The impact of liveness, technology and 24 hour news amongst other factors on the reporting of war is examined.

War Reporting provides an historical overview of the development of war journalism and war propaganda. Starting with 19th century conflicts such as the Crimean War, the module explores the reporting of conflicts such as the First World War, the Spanish and Ethiopian civil wars, Second World War, Korea, Vietnam and the two Gulf Wars.

New Media Technology and Social Conflict examines the role of new media technologies in the development of social movements and social conflict. The Master in Middle Eastern Studies (MIMES) is specifically tailored for graduates of various disciplines and backgrounds, who are interested in obtaining a better knowledge of the Middle East region, taking into account its social-historical complexity and cultural plurality. The program aims to offer solid historical, political and institutional perspectives of the current domestic, regional and international dynamics affecting the stability of the region, as well as a critical outlook on current debates over the Middle East.

Learning objectives

MIMES aims to guide students across this diverse and fascinating region, which, since decades, is at the center of the geostrategic interest of the international system. The program mainly focuses on the contemporary period, through a multi-disciplinary approach ranging over international relations, geopolitics, conflicts and security, economy and energy. Nonetheless, specific sections are devoted to the analysis of the historical and religious foundations of the modern Middle East, from the birth of Islam to the evolution of Islamic thought, law and economy. A dedicated course will offer a linguistic analysis of the political and juridical terminology and a glossary in Arabic. MIMES analyses in details infra-regions and inter-regions peculiarities and relations, from Maghreb to Central-Southern Asia, encouraging a comparative and holistic area studies approach.

4th level - Project Work

Students are required to develop a personal research project on a topic related to Middle Eastern affairs, under the supervision of a MIMES professor and/or a professional from a partner institution. The project work will often be connected to the internship experience.

5th level - Internship (or Arabic/ Persian/ Turkish language course)

The Master is completed with an internship in Italy or abroad within an institution whose mission and activities are consistent with the Master’s program. This gives students the invaluable opportunity to test and strengthen the competencies acquired during the Master and it usually lasts three months. As an alternative, students who do not carry out an internship may choose to attend an Arabic language course. Students will receive support and tutoring for their internship research.

This LLM – delivered in Qatar, with a particular focus on the problems being encountered in the Arabian Gulf region – gives you a thorough understanding of what corruption is, what causes it, and what does and doesn’t appear to work in trying to tackle it.

You gain an overview of the legislative and regulatory solutions to confront and eradicate the rapidly changing forms of corrupt practices at national and international levels.

How will I study?

You will learn through core modules and options. Over the two years of your course, you plan and work on your dissertation.

You study part time over two years for this LLM. All teaching events will normally take place between 3pm and 8pm.

Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Centre

This course is taught by Sussex faculty at the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Centre (ROLACC) in Doha, Qatar. ROLACC is a not-for-profit organisation, established in 2013 by the Emir of Qatar.

The Centre aims to build knowledge and raise individual and institutional competencies that promote the rule of law and fight corruption in line with international standards.

It plans to create a permanent framework for the exchange of experiences and expertise through the establishment of strategic partnerships with offices and agencies of the United Nations – particularly the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime – as well as the most prominent studies and research centres in the world.

This course prepares you to take leading roles in supporting anti-corruption strategies in government, non-government and commerical organisations, and in a variety of domestic, regional and international anti-corruption agencies.
