Our Master of Guidance and Counselling program is designed for teachers who are interested in qualifying as school guidance counsellors and others with experience in the human resource sector who wish to work in non-school areas.
This course is accredited by the Australian Counselling Association and the Singapore Association for Counselling, giving graduates the ability to pursue careers in both countries as well as internationally.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of the Master of Guidance and Counselling, graduates will be able to:
*Demonstrate advanced and integrated understanding of theoretical and professional knowledge, research methods, ethical reasoning principles and recent developments in guidance and counselling, with depth in the Professional Standards of the Australian Counselling Association and their Code of Ethics and Practice, and / or the Singapore Association for Counselling and their Code of Ethics

Course Structure

The Postgraduate Diploma extends over two academic years and is delivered Part-time in an open learning format, incorporating e-learning materials and workshops. (Computer access is vital). Modules include adult guidance and counselling skills, case review and professional development, integrating theory and practice, and research methodologies.

Career Options

Since its inception in 1997, this two-year course has played a key role in the professionalisation of adult guidance in Ireland. Graduates from this programme are eligible for membership of the Institute Guidance Counsellors.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Research Thesis

Our MSc in Counselling includes an empirical research project in the field of counselling. Research is an essential skill for a career in counselling, as more workplaces demand that their counsellors are able to empirically test their interventions and evidence their impact on clients. Our research training will help you to develop these skills and your research thesis will demonstrate that you are able to work as an empirically-based practitioner.

Counselling Placement

Our MSc in Counselling requires that you complete a core counselling placement of 150 supervised face-to-face counselling hours and 50 hours of work based practice. After learning the foundations of ethics, boundaries, and communication skills in the first semester, you will be expected to begin your placement at the start of the second semester in your first year. You will then need to complete all of your hours before graduating from the course in order to gain the MSc in Counselling. You will be provided with support and guidance in identifying a suitable placement, but the responsibility for obtaining a placement and completing all required hours remains with the student. You will also be responsible for ensuring that every month of practice is supported by at least 1.5 hours of supervision by an appropriate counselling supervisor (please be aware that you may need to pay for the services of a supervisor, if sufficient supervision is not provided within your placement). Overview

This is a one-year part time taught postgraduate diploma which is designed to prepare teachers and other education professionals to provide and manage a school guidance counselling service. The programme is recognized by the Irish Department of Education and Science, the National Centre for Guidance in Education and the Institute of Guidance Counsellors as a professional, international qualification in Guidance Counselling.

Participants attend Maynooth University one day per week (Friday 9am-4.30pm) and school placement one day per week (Monday). The programme begins with a week’s Summer School (August 26-30 inclusive) during which course participants are introduced to all six modules of the curriculum. Intensive training in Psychometric Testing is scheduled for October mid-term break (Dates to be confirmed).

Dates for the Summer School are to be confirmed.

Programme participants are responsible for arranging the school placement component of the course where they work in close co-operation with the School Guidance Counsellor. Normally, the school placement is within 65 kilometres of the university.

Course detail

The certificate in counselling gives you the chance to develop counselling skills, so it is useful for a wide range of roles and also a first step towards full qualification as a Professional Counsellor. UWE Bristol also provides a Diploma in Professional Studies Counselling, which you can apply for when you have completed this Certificate successfully. Alternatively, if you have an undergraduate Psychology degree (with Graduate Basis for Chartership with the British Psychological Society) you can go on to apply for our Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology.

We introduce counselling skills through student-centred and experiential learning techniques, with the opportunity to consider a wide variety of counselling-related subjects. For example, you will investigate different models of counselling and learn what it is like to be a client. You'll come to clearly understand client-counsellor contracts, develop self-awareness and learn when counselling is appropriate. You will also be trained in the safe and ethical use of counselling skills, and develop an awareness of its limitations.

Format

The course comprises several elements to help you develop your counselling skills, along with a firm background knowledge and understanding of its approaches, theories and disciplines:

• Peer support - You will pair up with a fellow student and meet weekly for peer support. This helps you develop self-awareness and listening skills.

• Introduction to counselling - This consists of training in basic listening skills, giving and receiving feedback, the use of different types of questions and how to 'challenge' appropriately in your work. We also focus on key issues relating to boundaries and ethical practice.

• Person-centered, Psychodynamic and Gestalt approaches to counselling - In the first unit of the course, we cover the person-centered approach to give you a solid foundation in the practice of counselling skills. The second unit covers either Psychodynamic or Gestalt counselling skills, to build an understanding of another significant approach in contemporary counselling.

• Group work - Sessions that involve focusing on the theory of group work and the processes of the group.

• Practical work - Spread throughout the course, this will include an opportunity to develop your counselling skills with feedback from tutors, as well as developing your assessment and self-assessment skills.

• Reading - You will be given a reading list which suggests key texts, and undertake other reading set by course tutors.

Careers / Further study

This qualification is invaluable to develop your counselling skills and enhance your career prospects if you're in existing employment in education, the NHS, voluntary agencies, social services, government schemes on in the private sector. Our Counselling Studies and Therapeutic Communication course will help you if you are interested in starting a career in counselling, or want to develop and hone your existing professional skills. It offers theoretical knowledge and an academic foundation in counselling and for a variety of helping skills in professional contexts. The optional modules enable you to study the niche you would like to work in. This course has received recognition from a professional body, awarded the advanced training status from the National Counselling Society (NCS).

This course does not include professional practice hours, those students who wish to be on Government register for Counselling, upon successful completion of this course can apply for the PgCert Counselling and Therapeutic Communication with Professional Practice, which will provide client hours. The PgCert/PgDip/MSc Counselling and Therapeutic Communication with Professional Practice has been designed to contribute to the educational requirements of practising counsellors working towards professional accreditation. The practical course aims to recruit counsellors who are already working in a practice context towards professional accreditation. Only students who complete the supervised practice modules (100 client hours) can receive the award of PgCert/PgDip/MSc Counselling and Therapeutic Communication with Professional Practice.

This stimulating programme combines theory and practice and requires significant private study.

Year one is dedicated to group theoretical study with one day of timetabled university study per week and one day of independent study.

Year two features 100 hours of practice placement which can be split between two settings. Practice placements may involve voluntary counselling agencies; counselling services in colleges, hospitals or workplaces or those attached to a GP surgery. You will need to find your own placements, with assistance from course tutors and will also need to access and fund appropriate supervision for this phase of your course.

Completion of year two is equivalent to a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy which will enable you to practice as a qualified counsellor, working with clients aged 16 and over, subject to BACP approval.

In year three independent study takes over as you embark on ethical, reliable and valid independent research for your 60 credit dissertation. Four days of timetabled sessions introduce this phase of the course and include research ethics and methodology.

During your studies you will also have to attend and fund a minimum of 12 hours of personal therapy.

In terms of learner support, students are taught together, encouraging a supportive peer approach. Module leaders offer academic support on individual units and small group skills tutorials are available.

Your university-based sessions will take place at the city centre campus - a vibrant location offering everything you could possibly need during your studies.

What you will study

Dissertation: At the masters stage, you will learn about the different research methods which help develop knowledge about counselling and psychotherapy. The Masters research and dissertation stage takes one year part-time to complete, following completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. You will attend for 6 days of teaching plus you will have individual supervision of your research project at the University, or by phone, Skype or email if that suits you better.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

The Masters research and dissertation stage does not have a requirement for practice hours but most students will remain in practice, developing their experience and building the hours to achieve personal BACP accreditation. There may be voluntary and/or occasional paid opportunities for practice in the University’s community counselling service.

Former students from the course have enhanced their career profile within their current employment or found new positions in the voluntary sector, in health settings, in Higher or Further Education, in Employment Assistance Programmes (EAPs), in business and in private practice. It is also possible to undertake further specialised training in order to work with children and young people, or to apply for a research PhD.

This program is designed to provide graduates with expertise in delivery of individualised assessment and therapy procedures suited to the presenting problems which occur in the Counselling context. The Master of Counselling degree extends teaching content across the lifespan (i.e., childhood, adolescence, and adulthood) and range of presenting issues which impact adversely on the capacity of individuals to function effectively in their day-to-day lives. This degree incorporates coursework, practical experience gained in class and during practicum placement, and research. The teaching curriculum emphasises development of personal competencies, broad-based knowledge, and applied skills required for registered practicing Counsellors. The Counselling program draws from a range of theoretical models derived from current research and practice. Graduates complete a number of practicum placements under the supervision of appropriately qualified and experienced supervisors where they gain experience in applying best-practice models which meet the standards for appropriate ethical and professional practice. The philosophy which underpins the processes used to train graduates is embedded in core principles which are considered to guide ethical and professional practice in the Counselling context.

- Principle 1: Training in the scientist-practitioner model
The scientist-practitioner model trains graduates in methods for systematic and objective investigation (scientist) as well as techniques for applying evidence-based practices to the presenting issues of clients (practitioner). This model aims to enhance professional practice by guiding graduates to understand the interconnection between their own day-to-day practice and the evidence which arises from scientific enquiry. This model also trains graduates to submit the techniques and procedures they implement in day-to-day practice to continued review and to establish clear processes for measuring client outcomes. Graduates are also assisted to use self-reflection and personal enquiry to become aware of the reasons for their decisions and the consequences of their actions. They are sensitised to the risks of using intuitive thinking or unsubstantiated approaches to working with their clients.

- Principle 2: Respect for the client-counsellor bond at all times
The client-counsellor bond is conceptualised as being central to the counselling process and graduates are trained in methods for building rapport, establishing professional boundaries, and responding to clients in a respectful manner. Graduates are assisted to learn methods for engaging in authentic and collaborative interactions with their clients and to minimise any procedure which might create a power imbalance between themselves and their client. Although graduates are taught a number of theoretical perspectives and practical techniques to drive effective assessment and therapy, it is emphasised that the potential for these to create positive client outcomes depends on a strong client-counsellor bond.

- Principle 3: Emphasis is on idiographic understanding of client presenting issues
Graduates are trained to focus their therapeutic attention on understanding the reasons for their clients’ responses and life experiences as opposed to simply labelling these. The idiographic approach is based on in-depth investigation of individual experiences, understanding of client needs, and acquisition of client skills to facilitate positive change. This approach trains graduates in collaborative data-collection and analysis related to specific aspects of client performance to develop client- rather than label-driven treatments. The idiographic approach offers a strong philosophical foundation for viewing client responses as serving a function and constituting a coping mechanism for those life situations which cause the client challenge.

- Principle 4: Non-manualised therapies designed to enhance client competencies
Counselling is presented to graduates as a learning process and not a situation of containment of "psychic abnormalities". Therapy outcomes are achieved by the client acquiring skills capable of being transferred to real life situations. These skills arise from the counselling process itself and are tailored to address specific aspects of the client’s performance or particular concerning situations.
