Our postgraduate masters programmes feature a mix of core and optional modules, allowing you to tailor your degree towards your individual personal development needs and career ambitions. You will complete up to 10 taught modules during your programme, totalling 180 credits. One module usually equates to 20 credits or 10 hours of work per week. Your week will include lectures, tutorials, workshops and personal study, with each accounting for 25% of your time on average. This stimulating mix of lectures and interactive tutorials provides you with the opportunity to discuss and explore the subject material in depth with your lecturers and fellow students. These include online materials and multimedia content, guest lectures, individual and group assignments, case studies, field visits, dealing room simulations, presentations, applied projects, consultancy work and examinations.

On average examinations form around 70% of the assessed work with the remaining 30% coming from coursework, including a written dissertation or project depending on your chosen programme. The exam period falls between April and June in the summer term, with students taking an average of 5 or 6 exams. Graduation normally takes place in December.

Ongoing support

While postgraduate students are self-motivated and determined individuals, study at this level can present additional pressures which we take seriously. Lecturers are available to discuss the content of each module and your personal tutor can meet with you regularly to discuss any additional issues. Full-time support staff are also available to help with any questions or issues that may arise during your time at Henley

Each pathway of our MSc Information Management is designed to give a rigorous academic understanding of real-life and current business issues. Graduates of the Systems Analysis and Design pathway will be equipped to manage and utilize information resources in various business fields including business & management, construction management and healthcare through a thorough understanding of systems analysis and design methodology.

A number of our students join our PhD programmes each year.

Students who pass the module – Business Domain and Requirements Analysis with a mark of 60 or above will be eligible for the British Computer Society Professional Certificate in Business Analysis Practice.

Intelligence and security policy issues are now one of the fastest growing areas of academic and public concern, especially since '9/11' and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today more than ever before national governments, international agencies and most major international corporations have an identified need for staff with a strong grasp of intelligence and security issues who can also demonstrate first-rate skills of research and assessment.

Taught by the internationally respected scholars of the Brunel Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies, backed up where required by practitioner expertise, the PG Cert in Intelligence Analysis (by Distance Learning) offers a unique opportunity for practical, policy-oriented graduate study of intelligence issues applicable across the private and public sectors around the world.

Aims

To provide you with a systematic understanding of the role of intelligence policy and intelligence operations in national strategy and decision-making.

To provide you with a systematic and critical understanding of the role national intelligence institutions and their products have in the context of contemporary international history and politics.

To provide you with a systematic and critical understanding to the effectiveness of different methods of intelligence analysis to domains and applications of intelligence and introduce students to the core concepts of the cognitive process involved in intelligence analysis and associated cognitive errors and biases.

To provide general training in policy-oriented research and analytical skills.

Course Content

The PGcert consists of two compulsory modules. Modules can vary from year to year, but these offer a good idea of what we teach.

Intelligence Analysis Foundations, Methods and Applications:
This module examines the core concepts of the cognitive process involved in intelligence analysis and associated cognitive errors and biases, and promotes critical understanding to the effectiveness of different methods of intelligence analysis to domains and applications of intelligence. You will gain hands on experience in applying structured analytic techniques, quantitative methods, and traditional analysis methods. The module also draws lessons from other disciplines and examines the analytical implications of organisational aspects in intelligence. Throughout the module, you will undertake the Validation of Intelligence Scenarios and Analysis (VISA).
VISA is a scenario based intelligence analysis exercise covering open source intelligence collection plan, source evaluation and analytical techniques evaluation on contemporary case where denial and deception is potentially involved.

Contemporary Threats and Analytical Methodology:
This module hosts the Brunel Analytical Simulation Exercise (BASE).
BASE provides you with an opportunity to undertake a simulated intelligence analysis on a real-world subject. It is designed to emulate the interdepartmental assessment methods of the British Joint Intelligence Committee, and gives you a chance to apply hands-on analytical principles and methods learned abstractly in the other Intelligence Analysis taught courses.

Teaching

Thematic Video Lectures (TVLs) 
The thematic video lectures and reading materials will provide grounding in the theoretical, methodological and practical issues upon which good research in intelligence and security studies is conducted. It will focus on providing conceptual mapping to the subject. The Lecturer video interaction with students will be supported by well-structured lecture slides. This is to be followed by problem based learning where students engage in practical exercises, case studies, and simulations.

Multidisciplinary Teaching
The programme design enables students to examine intelligence analysis in multidisciplinary approach. Security Studies, Military History, Organisational Theories, Law, Cognitive Psychology and Probability together contribute to thorough and comprehensive approach to studying Intelligence.

Residential Week
Students join Brunel campus for one week, dedicated to supporting the teaching and assessment. During the Residential Week, you will benefit from live seminars and discussions with experts in the field.

Effective Interaction
Lecturers provide timely feedback on students’ regular short assignments, where they demonstrate understanding of key concepts and develop regular interaction with teaching team.
Peer-to-Peer review is an integral part of the online design, where students comment in their colleagues short assignments and engage in discussions. 
Lecturers have regular real-time online office hours, where they can engage with students in live discussions.
The Residential activities further supports the cohort atmosphere where students engage in joint academic and social events.

Online Resources
To further utilise the online platform, students learning will be supported by the use of specialised analysis software tools in intelligence and they will engage with multimedia material where possible. Moreover, students will have access – via the integrated online platform – to supportive teaching materials and workshops provided by Brunel Graduate School and the several units of Brunel Educational Excellence Centre.
Students will have access to Online Journals, E-Books, Digital Copies, and other online materials (such as government declassified documents).

Assessment

Intelligence Analysis Foundations, Methods and Applications

The module is assessed via three types of assignments. The first leg of assessment is a portfolio of short assignments to be submitted online and aims at engaging with the key readings on regular basis, getting regular feedback for lecturers, and interaction among students.
The second leg of assessment is to be conducted while you are on campus. The residential week consists of Workshops – involving presentations and exercises – that will be used as opportunities to ‘test-fly’ your arguments that you wish to make in your final essay in a setting of open discussion and challenge from your peers as well as academic staff.
Finally, you submit your final essays where you reflect on your learning throughout the module.

Contemporary Threats and Analytical Methodology - Brunel Analytical Simulation Exercise (BASE)
Brunel Analytical Simulation Exercise will involve you working in groups in a simulated joint, all-source intelligence assessment modelled on the actual joint assessment processes in the US and UK governments. You are assessed on a mixture of individual and group work.

The Brunel Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies is Britain's first academic centre dedicated to intelligence scholarship and policy-analysis.
The Centre is an inter-disciplinary endeavour, and includes participation from some of the leading Brunel University London academics in the fields of cryptography, computer networking, imagery, economics and even law. Many of these experts already assist our teaching. As well, the centre benefits from the assistance, from time to time, of various officials of Her Majesty’s Government. COURSE SUMMARY

Throughout this course you will study the discipline of Performance Analysis in Sport and gain an understanding of how this vastly growing sector interacts with a multitude of Sports Science disciplines.

As a student on this programme you will have access to industry standard Performance Analysis equipment and you will learn how this exciting discipline is used across sports to enhance performance (Performance Analysis Module). You will generate an understanding of how Performance Analysis can be utilised in relation to sports injuries and how this can be measured (Injury Prevention and Performance Measurement Module).

You will also have the opportunity to conduct some primary research that could lead to publications, which may inform future Performance Analysis practice (Research Project Module).

COURSE DETAILS

This is the only Performance Analysis master's degree in the North West of England. The online theoretical content will provide the basis for the ‘on campus’ sessions, in order to put your learning into practice and provide some context to the theories.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The MSc course is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis.

The full-time course runs over three academic semesters (October through to September the following year), whilst  giving you the chance to exit with the following awards:

  • Postgraduate Certificate: completion of one module
  • Postgraduate Diploma: completion of two modules
  • Masters: completion of two modules plus a dissertation

In order to achieve an award of MSc Performance Analysis in Sport you must successfully complete the modules Performance Analysis and Injury Prevention and Performance Measurement, along with producing a thesis for the dissertation module.

TEACHING

This course is available both part-time and full-time and is delivered via a blended learning approach, which includes:  

  • Workshops (three days per module, per semester). These are interactive, discursive, reflective, participatory, collaborative and practice related sessions that employ a variety of teaching and learning methods. As the course progresses these will become progressively more student led, with you presenting case studies for peer and tutor review.  
  • Individual scholarly activity.
  • Self directed learning, personal reflection, practice based application and reflection, including peer and tutor review.  
  • Distance learning resources.
  • Delivery of supporting resources such as study guides and lecture material online. 
  • Facilitated group work, including tutor and peer evaluation are a key component of this course. 
  • Personal tutor and peer support, to provide an academic, practice based and personal support mechanism alongside facilitated networking.

- the opportunity to use a variety of Business Analysis techniques
- your work has an influence on the operation of your organisations

Your employment should require some analysis of business situations, in the private or public sector. Samples of your work will form the basis of reflection and learning projects, guided by a personal mentor.

- MSc in Business Analysis & Consulting
Students who complete the Diploma and gain sufficient marks to proceed to the MSc will be expected to undertake a project. The project will be integrated with your employment. You'll have individual personal mentoring to guide you in reflection and learning.

To undertake this course you need to have:
- Modern PC running Windows Vista or higher, web cam, headset with microphone
- Minimum 2Mb/sec broadband connection
- Microsoft Excel 2010 or higher

NB: Some of the course software is Windows-only and will not run under Linux or on Macintosh computers so use of a PC or PC-emulation software is essential if these operating systems are used.

Mathematical results permeate nearly all facets of life and are a necessary prerequisite for the vast majority of modern technologies – and as our IT systems become increasingly powerful, we are able to mathematically handle enormous amounts of data and solve ever more complex problems.

Special emphasis is placed on developing students' ability to formalise given problems in a way that facilitates algorithmic processing as well as enabling them to choose or develop, and subsequently apply, suitable algorithms to solve problems in an appropriate manner. The core modules consist of two mathematics seminars and the presentation of your master's thesis.The compulsory elective modules are divided into eight module groups:

1)   Algebra, Geometry and Cryptography

This module group imparts advanced results in the areas of algebra and geometry, which constitute the fundament for algorithmic calculations, particularly in cryptography but also in many other mathematical areas.

2)   Mathematical Logic and Discrete Mathematics

The theoretical possibilities and limitations of algorithm-based solutions are treated in this module group.

3)   Analysis, Numerics and Approximation Theory

Methods from the fields of mathematical analysis, applied harmonic analysis and approximation theory for modelling and approximating continuous and discrete data and systems as well as efficient numerical implementation and evaluation of these methods are the scope of this module group.

4) Dynamical Systems and Optimisation

Dynamical systems theory deals with the description of change over time. This module group is concerned with methods used for the modelling, analysis, optimisation and design of dynamical systems, as well as the numerical implementation of such techniques.

5) Stochastics, Statistics

This module group deals with methods for modelling and analysing complex random phenomena as well as the construction, analysis and optimisation of stochastic algorithms and techniques used in statistical data analysis.

6) Data Analysis and Data Management and Programming

This module group examines the core methods used in computer science for the analysis of data of heterogeneous modalities (e.g. multimedia data, social networks and sensor data) and for the realisation of data analysis systems.

7) Applications

In this module group, you will practise applying the mathematical methods learned in module groups 1 to 6 to real-world applications such as Marketing, Predictive Analytics and Computational Finance.

This programme is delivered by the Institute of Motion Analysis & Research within the Department of Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgery at the TORT Centre.

The Institute of Motion Analysis and Research (IMAR) was established in 2003 by combining the Foot Pressure Analysis Laboratory and the Dundee Gait Laboratory at the Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery Department, University of Dundee. However, gait analysis has been at the forefront of development in this field for the past 25 years and foot pressure measurement for the past 16 years, which gives us a tremendous bank of knowledge on which to draw. IMAR's main goal is to promote excellence in teaching and research and to provide a comprehensive clinical service in the field of motion analysis.

A third laboratory dedicated to Sports Biomechanics is currently nearing completion to augment and support the current facilities of IMAR.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, to reflect the multi-disciplinary aspect of the research carried out, the respective staff at IMAR were returned into Unit of Assessment 25 (General Engineering - Biomedical Engineering) and Unit of Assessment 8 (Primary Care and Other Community Based Clinical Subjects) where 90% and 85% of our quality profile was deemed of international class. This is an excellent outcome taking into consideration that IMAR was only established in 2003.

The programme is intended to provide students with an understanding and knowledge of the technological aspects, and the fundamental and advanced concepts of motion measurement and clinical analysis.

Methods of Assessment

The modules are assessed by a combination of written examination and continuous assessment. In addition, the research project, undertaken by those studying towards an MSc, is assessed by dissertation and oral examination.

Coursework:
At the end of each unit you submit an assignment to your tutor for assessment, along with an assignment card containing a signed declaration that the work submitted is your own. A copy of the assignment is returned to you with your marks and the original is retained by the University. The assignments form the coursework element of the final assessment for both courses.

Examinations:
Written examinations are held during March/ April each year in Dundee. Under special circumstances exams can also be sat by arrangement at approved examination centres (for example, at British Council Offices) outside, and in the United Kingdom. If you sit an examination outside Dundee you will be responsible for paying any costs the examination centre may charge

You must complete all the modules in a module group, including the assignment, before you can sit the exam(s) for that particular group. You may choose to sit all the exams at one time or spread them throughout your course .

Dissertation:
The MSc project is assessed by dissertation and viva (oral examination). Vivas are held in Dundee.

The core module is taught within the Department of Sociology, and provides an introduction to critical contemporary sociological conceptualisations of culture, presenting opportunities for the development and exploration of interdisciplinary perspectives on the analysis of contemporary cultural processes. 

In addition to the core module, you also study three option modules (or equivalent). One of these must be chosen from Sociology; the others may be taken from departments across Goldsmiths including the Departments of AnthropologyEnglish and Comparative LiteraturePolitics and Media and CommunicationsMusicEducational Studies, and the Centre for Cultural Studies

You also write a Dissertation for which you meet for individual supervision with a member of the Sociology staffand participate in Dissertation workshops.

As a full-time student, you would normally complete the core module and one option in the Autumn term, and two further options in the Spring term. As a part-time student you will spread these over two years. Core and option modules are normally taught by one hour lectures, followed by one hour seminars.

The dissertation is a substantive piece of research, empirical or theoretical, on a topic of your choice.

Assessment

Assessment consists of coursework, extended essays, reports, presentations, practice based projects or essays/logs, group projects, reflective essays, and seen and unseen written examinations.

Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) and Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) awards are also available in this programme. For the award of Postgraduate Diploma, you would need to successfully complete the core module and option modules to the value of 120 CATS; for the Postgraduate Certificate you would need to successfully complete the core module and option modules to the value of 60 CATS. With the growing prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (now estimated to be 1:68) behaviour analysis has experienced a significant rise in popularity.

There are over 13,000 Board Certified Behaviour Analysts (BCBAs) worldwide and this number is predicted to rise given that professional approval is seen as the key to delivering high quality services to individuals, families, in schools and in related settings. Furthermore, behaviour analysis is increasingly being applied to general education, special education and organisational leadership settings.

This programme has been designed provide students with the opportunity to develop a critical understanding of the principles and application of research design and analytical methods relevant to the scientific study of the physiology of sport and exercise. The programme facilitates the integration of theory and professional practice, and throughout the programme the research process and emphasis on student autonomy of learning become increasingly important.

Programme Structure and Content
Research skills oriented modules form the bedrock of SHES’ MRes programmes. As a result taught modules are aligned with both discipline specific and the (higher) cognitive skills our MRes programmes aim to provide. Within a modular structure all students undertake compulsory modules in research skills totalling 40 credits:

Research Skills (20 credits)
and 20 credits from the following modules:

How to Conduct Statistics (20 credits);
Presentation of Statistics (10 credits);
Peer Reviewing (10 credits);
Latent Variable Modelling (10 credits);
plus 20 credits from optional modules and a final compulsory Research Project comprising 120 credits.

Research Skills
Research Skills is a double credit taught module. Students study the broad nature of the research process that will allow them to complete, initially, an appropriate Independent Study (in which a research proposal for the Research Project is completed) and subsequently, a full Research Project. The module covers material relevant to the design and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative research. It also provides a broad understanding of the benefits and limitations of various research methods, research designs, data collection instruments and data analysis tools. Students are given the opportunity to develop their ability to be critically evaluative.

Specific content includes: Statistical issues in quantitative research and design; Simple and multiple (forced entry, moderated and mediated) regression analyses; Single factor analysis of variance with and without repeated measures; Two factor analysis of variance with and without repeated measures; Single factor and two factor multivariate analysis of variance (with and without repeated measures); Repeated measures analysis of variance using the multivariate solution; Doubly repeated measures analysis of variance; Analysis of covariance; Follow-up procedures for all of the above; Assumptions underpinning all of the above and available options for dealing with violations to these assumptions; Experiments and causal inference; External and construct validity; Experimental and quasi-experimental designs; Correlational and epidemiological research; Reliability and validity in quantitative and qualitative research; Issues in qualitative research and design; Interviews; Single case design and analysis; Observation; Narrative; Ethnography; grounded theory and discourse analysis.

How to conduct Statistics and Presentation of Statistics modules
The purpose of these two taught modules is to provide students with an in-depth understanding and critical appreciation of statistical procedures. As independent study based modules, they will enable students to gain a comprehensive understanding of a statistical procedure of their choosing (following consultation with the staff member responsible for the module). Towards this end, students will likely cover (i) relevant background issues; (ii) when to use utilise particular statistical tests;(iii) how to conduct statistical testing via appropriate software; (iv) how to correctly interpret computational output; and (v) how to present the findings following analysis.

Students learn about these themes through a “learning by teaching” paradigm via the development of a statistics oriented verbal presentation and written assignment resembling a book chapter/resource. The verbal presentation will be conducted first in order to obtain developmental feedback for the written assignment.

Peer Reviewing Scientific Research
Students work closely with their supervisor to perform an initial review of a previously submitted (and subsequently published) research article. Students will then follow the paper along the peer review process, discussing their review with their supervisor, and then be required to adequately address concerns which have been raised. Collectively this will mean that the student will cover a contemporary research topic in a highly focused and in-depth manner gaining a comprehensive understanding of how to prepare their own manuscripts (eg research proposal, Research Project) and how to evaluate the research of others. Students will also attend the School’s Research Seminar series.

Latent Variable Modelling
This module introduces postgraduate students to the concepts of Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) and to give a basic grounding in their implementation. It also covers an introduction to SEM using LISREL and topics including: measurement models and structural models; exploratory factor analysis; confirmatory factor analysis (CFA); structural modelling with observed and latent variables; conceptual issues, common misunderstandings and limitations.

Research Project
Under the guidance of their supervising tutor(s), students will pro-actively determine the content of this unit. The initial stages of the Research Project will develop the work of the project proposal and taught phases of the MRes programmes. This will involve the surveying and reviewing of research evidence with the aim of formulating an appropriate research question, and will likely involve some refinement and pilot work. Once achieved, the student will implement a research design and method suited to their area of inquiry. Ethical approval of the study will be obtained before data may be collected, thereby introducing students to this integral part of the research process. Throughout this module students receive excellent research training from leaders in the field. It is expected that the resulting projects will be publishable in international, peer-reviewed journals.

Mono-disciplinary studies and interdisciplinary work, which might involve the student’s ongoing sport/exercise experience, will be encouraged. Each topic will normally involve data collection, analysis and interpretation and allow students to demonstrate their powers of imagination, initiative, independence and time management. Students will be expected to show a thorough knowledge of the relevant sources of information and the ability to use them with discrimination; to provide full references; to exercise sound and independent judgment; to structure work logically and to express themselves with clarity and precision.

The taught programme is delivered using a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, workshops, group activities, practical work, tutorials and role play. Each module comprises approximately 200 hours of student time (including formal contact).

Who is it for?

The course is for motivated students who enjoy working within high-pressure environments often to tight deadlines. You will need a good undergraduate degree as well as the tenacity and patience to understand business systems and the ability to adapt to constant change.

Objectives

There is a common misconception in building business systems: that users know their requirements. Often they don’t. This postgraduate Business Systems Analysis programme has been designed to address this problem.

The MSc in Business Systems Analysis and Design is not about developing algorithms and coding. We work with technology but we are not technicians because we know that to become an IT consultant or business analyst, you need to understand the disparate areas that make up the discipline. This is a Masters degree where you will design a business system; in order to do this you will unpick the information infrastructure to find out if the system works.

Analysing a business system is a process that demands constant re-evaluation. By investigating system requirements, considering how information flows through it, and exploring the pitfalls that emerge within user hierarchies, at City we examine the business system as a whole. This approach is essential to respond to rapid business change.

These are some of the questions the course poses:
-What is the right system to address the problem?
-Does the system meet the needs of the business now and will it be able to adapt in the future?
-How is information flowing within the system?
-How will users interact with the system throughout the project life cycle?

Placements

As a student on this programme you can undertake an internship in the July to December period, for up to six months. You can work under a client’s direction for all or part of this time. Many students use the internship as an opportunity to carry out a specific project which forms the context for their final dissertation.

One current student is working within a user experience design company to investigate how scents affect the emotional perception of digital fruit images displayed on a desktop service.

Academic facilities

As a student on the MSc Business Systems Analysis and Design course you will have access to dedicated labs and use specialist software such as SAP. At City we also have access to Microsoft Dynamics ERP software to support the enterprise information system module. Microsoft Dynamics is an industry-based CRM system. As part of the University of London you can also become a member of Senate House Library for free with your student ID card.

Teaching and learning

We provide a diversity of teaching approaches so you get a diversity of learning experiences in the form of traditional lectures, live classroom demonstrations, tutorials, laboratories, and TV studio role-playing. We encourage you to engage with the material in an active way. As a postgraduate student, we expect you to take responsibility for your own learning and use non-timetabled hours for your own private study or group interactions.

You will be assessed in a variety of ways from coursework and laboratory work to presentations, examinations and a project dissertation. By successfully completing eight taught modules and the research project you will be awarded a Master of Science (MSc) degree. All modules in this course are supported by Moodle, City's online learning environment.

The course is available full time (12 months) and part time (up to 28 months - two days a week). The Department is aware that this involves considerable commitment from part-time students, and we try to be as flexible as we can so you can successfully combine your work and study.

By completing eight modules and the dissertation you will be awarded 180 credits and a Masters level qualification. Alternatively, if you do not complete the dissertation but have successfully completed the eight modules, you will be awarded 120 credits and a postgraduate diploma. If you successfully complete four modules (60 credits) you will be awarded a postgraduate certificate.

Modules

There are six core modules and four electives from which you can choose two topics. Practical work is emphasised throughout the degree programme to develop your understanding and skills, which is strengthened by interactive teamwork. The course has an excellent track record in producing employable hybrid IT/business professionals.

In the industry you need to communicate your expertise in lay terms. The modules give you experience in working on group projects so you can manage roles and responsibilities and build a set of professional values. The core content will also give you the ability to set strategies, manage information flows and deal with problems such as overload and risk.

-The specialist understanding of theoretical principles in business systems analysis and design.
-Technical skills, through practical laboratory work, so you can apply your knowledge of IT and how it affects business competitiveness.
