Programme content

The programme involves six taught modules, including four core modules (Consumer Behaviour, Marketing Management, Marketing Research and Marketing Strategy and planning) followed by a number of specialist modules such as Retail Marketing, Strategic Brand Management, Strategic Environmental Sustainability and Marketing Communications. You will also undertake a substantial research dissertation on a marketing topic of your choice. Recent dissertations have included investigations in areas such as interactive marketing, marketing communications and retail marketing.

This programme is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Programme details

The 12-month full-time programme begins at the end of September. The first nine months are spent developing knowledge through six or seven taught modules, comprising four compulsory modules and two/three specialist modules chosen from a list of options designed to give you flexibility.

A 24 month MSc Marketing programme is also available where students first take a nine month general business qualification, Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (GDBA) if they do not meet the 12 month course requirements. If a satisfactory performance on this GDBA is achieved students can then progress to the 12-month MSc Marketing programme.

Learning and teaching

During the year you will undertake a major independent research dissertation, which must be related to an international marketing issue. Academic members of the Marketing Group will suggest topics consistent with their ongoing research, or you can choose a topic that is directly related to your chosen career path.

There are a host of potential topics for an international marketing dissertation.

  • Comparative analysis of Nestle’s marketing strategies in Europe and Africa

Through working on two major consultancy projects you will develop an understanding of the principles and challenges of consulting in the communications sector and develop skills in facilitation, communication, negotiation, project management, problem-solving, relationship-handling, project leadership and team work. Part of your skills training will take place off campus at the university's Priestley Centre on Lake Coniston in Cumbria. 

Your projects will link to real live communication issues facing organisations – evaluating consumer reactions to recent advertising campaigns, developing media plans, evaluating approaches to branding, or developing new web designs. Your performance on your two projects (one group-based and one individual) will be evaluated not just on content but also your professionalism and client relations. Your second project will also form part of your dissertation. You will also have some media skills training as part of the programme.

The course offers an ideal balance between the practical and intellectual elements of heritage and heritage policy. Students both explore cultural, natural, tangible and intangible heritage through the lens of environmental history, whilst also developing a strong practical skills-base.

The course provides
- a foundation in the concepts, ideas, theory, practice and application of heritage and heritage policy
- skills in the principal subject areas contributing to the study of cultural and natural heritage
- advanced study in the main subject areas of candidates’ primary disciplines
- training in appropriate quantitative and qualitative research, interpretative and presentational methodologies.

Students have the opportunity to work with members of staff on a one to one basis, and experience the Scottish cultural and natural environments first-hand on a number of field trips designed to enhance class based teaching. Depending on module content, delivery is by weekly, three-hour seminar or workshop and/or field visit/class. Assessment for both 30-credit core modules and 15-credit options is 100% coursework including assessed oral presentations, plus a 15,000-word traditional dissertation (100% of final grade) or work-based project portfolio (70% of the final grade) and a 5,000-word critical essay (30% of final grade)

Southampton Solent’s media academy offers a comprehensive media loans scheme, giving students free access to a range of modern filmmaking equipment including high-definition (HD) video cameras and DSLR full-frame cameras. Students are also able to access a wide range of top-quality lenses and lighting kits. Investment into 4K technology has already begun, giving students access to the latest professional standards. The media academy is also home to three green-screen studios, a large visual recording studio with capacity for 200 seated audience members and a range of industry standard post-production facilities.

Your future

Many past students are running their own production businesses, working as in-house practitioners or securing budgets for creative projects through crowd-funding. This course will help students prepare for careers in video production, post-production, directing, producing and cinematography.

Across the autumn and spring semesters, you will take 120 credits of taught modules including a 30-credit entrepreneurship consultancy project. Each module typically consists of 10 two or three hour sessions.

You will complete a 60-credit 14,000-word dissertation or business plan over the summer, and will be allocated an appropriate dissertation supervisor who will oversee your progress.

Postgraduate careers team

Taught students benefit from the support of our postgraduate careers team who will help you to explore your career options and develop your career management skills. Our weekly MSc Advanced Career Leaders Programme is complemented by individual careers consultations, networking events and access to a wide range of employer presentations, volunteering activities and work experience opportunities.

Through a combination of your academic studies and the careers support on offer, you will be in an excellent position to enhance your career prospects and move onto the next stage of your career.

Employability and average starting salary

82.1% of postgraduates from Nottingham University Business School who were available for employment secured work or further study within six months of graduation. £28,500 was the average starting salary, with the highest being £50,000.*
