This has given rise to many opportunities to develop green, sustainable products and chemistries to replace oil-based products and fuels. These include pharmaceuticals, food packaging, clothing and building materials, as well as cutting-edge carbon nanofibers and biofuels. UBC is a world leader in creating innovative value from forest biomass, and graduates of this program will take their place as technical leaders and sector specialists in this growing industry.

The Master of Engineering Leadership (MEL) in Green Bio-Products is an intensive one-year degree program that will equip you with the technical and leadership skills required to contribute to the growing bio-economy. The project-based curriculum covers all stages of the industry value chain. Graduates will gain a comprehensive and integrated understanding of the chemistry and anatomy of the tree and its role as one of the most prolific forms of biomass. While 60 per cent of your classes will focus on your technical specialization, the remaining 40 per cent are leadership development courses that will enhance your business, communication and people skills. Delivery of the management and leadership courses are in partnership with UBC's Sauder School of Business.

Course details

The taught modules in the first period are compulsory and are designed to provide you with a broad background on marine renewable as well as a solid basis for the option modules in period two. You’ll undertake three modules in period one that provide a background in marine renewable energy: introduction to marine renewable energy, economics, law and policy for marine renewable energy, research skills and research methods. In period two you can choose three options from a choice of five: assessment of coastal resources and impacts, marine planning, economics of the marine environment, mechanics of marine renewable energy structures, and wave and current modelling for marine renewable energy. During period three you’ll undertake a research project and dissertation. Due to the extensive staff research expertise there is a wide range of potential projects spanning marine science, engineering and socio-economics. You may also carry out projects with external organisations that have interests in marine renewable energy.

Western science is dominated by ‘reductionism’ – the idea that natural phenomena can be Stephan Harding, Head of Holistic Science at Schumacher Collegefully explained in terms of their component parts. Although it is a useful tool in certain circumstances, reductionism as a world view is incomplete and can be dangerous on its own since it suggests that by analysing the ‘mechanical’ workings of nature we can fully predict and manipulate it entirely for our own benefit.

Holistic Science integrates the useful aspects of reductionism and mainstream science by developing a more comprehensive basis for seeing and knowing. At the heart of this is Goethe’s rigorous and systematic way of involving the imagination in an appreciation of nature’s qualities, complexity and intrinsic value. Holistic thinking is stimulated by exercises using phenomenology and in tackling challenges related to physics, earth system science, ecology, evolutionary biology, organisational development and health studies. Since 1998, when the programme was pioneered at Schumacher College, it has developed a coherent methodology of holistic enquiry, providing a rigorous and ethical framework for a mature science.

The MSc in Applied Biosciences and Biotechnology aims to:

• To equip graduates to pursue careers in bioscience and biotechnology either in industry or academic research.
• Produce graduates with an in-depth understanding of the core principles and methodologies underlying current biotechnological research.
• To enable students to develop the transferable qualities and skills required for employment or research in the biosciences sector.
• Produce bioscience graduates with training in relevant business and entrepreneurial skills.
• Provide a training in laboratory and research skills.
• Meet the global need for graduates who can successfully contribute to the rapidly developing industrial biotechnology sector.

The biotechnology sector has grown rapidly in recent years and there are increasing career opportunities worldwide for experienced graduates who have been trained in advanced molecular bioscience, systems biology and ‘omics’ technologies, together with exposure to entrepreneurship and innovation. Demand for these skills is predicted to increase sharply over the next decade due to investment in the “green economy”, notably in the areas of bioenergy and industrial biotechnology. Moreover glycoprotein biopharmaceuticals comprise an increasing proportion of new drugs and their development, manufacture and quality control demands interdisciplinary skills in applied biosciences and biotechnology which can only be gained via advanced training at postgraduate level.

Degree structure
The course is comprised of three parts: a taught component, a tutored dissertation, which includes a mini-conference, and a research component. The taught component in weeks 1-30 will include lectures, seminars, computer practicals and tutorials. Computer based practicals will be held throughout weeks 1-14. The dissertation will be carried out in weeks 31-35. A full time laboratory based research project will be carried out from week 36 to 52.

Weeks 1-15: Induction week followed by courses in Biochemistry, Molecular Cell Biology, Bioinformatics, Systems Biology and Statistics which introduce students to the fundamental concepts of modern biology, including cell biology, genomics, proteomics, experimental techniques and data handling. Assessment will be through a written examination in week 15.
Weeks 16-30: All students attend two modules comprising advanced lectures in applied bioscience and biotechnology encompassing: industrial biotechnology, glycol-technology, structural biology, cellular damage, repair and ageing, genes and genomics, infection and immunity, stem cells and regenerative medicine, neurobiology in health and disease, integrative systems biology and synthetic biology. Additional seminars and workshops will introduce students to innovation and entrepreneurship. All students will attend weekly seminars from invited external speakers from industry and the public sector. Assessment will be through two written examinations in week 30.
Weeks 31-35: Students will undertake a full-time tutored dissertation followed by a mini-conference.
Weeks 36-52: Students will undertake full-time individual projects in the research laboratories of the Department of Life Sciences.

This one-year course is intended for students with a keen interest in integrating environmental management with business practices.

Sustainable development is a principal goal and a key policy feature of many of the major institutes and governments of the world. A key element of achieving sustainable development is the balance of Environmental, Economic and Social development drivers. This course will take an integrated view of environmental management within a business context and will provide the specialist interdisciplinary training that is required to fully integrate sustainable development objectives into businesses management. By integrating modules from Bangor Business School and The School of Environment, Natural Resources and Geography, it will train students to be sophisticated environmental managers who can interpret legislative and audit requirements and deliver them in a manner conducive to continued economic development. The programme includes highly topical case studies from across these sectors reflecting changing strategies and alternative approaches.

Course structure
The course has 2 parts. Part 1 runs from October to May and consists of six taught components and must be completed successfully before proceeding to part 2. Part 2 is the research element of the course, this is where you complete your dissertation and it runs from June to September. You will use your knowledge and skills developed in part 1 to develop your own research ideas and to examine your chosen topic in detail.

Part one subjects:

Organisations and People ASB 4431: To provide an integrated analysis of management, organisations and people, developing the conceptual, strategic and practical skills necessary for managers in complex, global organisational contexts, drawing on key issues arising from contemporary research in organisational behaviour (OB) and human resource management (HRM).

Strategic Management ASB 4413: This module introduces the language of strategic management and explores the link between strategic and operational management. You will develop a critical understanding of the strategic processes that lie at the core of business management processes and how to place strategic decision making within a dynamic business environment.

Finance for Managers ASB 4007: This module is designed for those who aim to achieve a basic understanding of financial management and control, and who require an understanding of finance in order to manage an organisation effectively. Financial planning and control are central themes, as well as the appraisal techniques of investment projects.

New Venture Creation ASB4010: Evaluates the role of entrepreneurs and small firms as the lifeblood of an economy; to examine their contribution to innovation, wealth creation and employment; and to gain insights into the concepts of entrepreneurship and routes to new venture creation.

Green Economies DXX4518: This module explores the process of establishing a venture from idea generation to the completion of a business plan which incorporates environmental planning and management. This programme in Sustainable Practices in the Built Environment is a unique opportunity to learn and develop skills in a cross-disciplinary environment. it is made up of four parallel specialisms in:

Its aim in offering specialisms at different scales in sustainability is to facilitate the shared exchange of knowledge and practice and the opportunity of inter-disciplinary and collaborative learning and working. We encourage and facilitate students to develop a critical approach to the interaction between sustainability research, theory and practice, and in particular their own praxis, and can provide students with opportunities to up-skill in the context of sustainability.

Our students will have the opportunity to build appropriate professional networks (and extend their existing networks) within the field of sustainability and help position graduates as key participants and protagonists and leaders in the global green economy and wider society. How you will be taught

The course is taught as a collection of 20 credit modules amounting to a total of 180 Masters (SHE M, SCQF 11) credits. The delivery style and assessment requirements for each module varies as we believe a diversity of practice provides strength. Nevertheless all modules combine a mixture of formal lecture, small group seminar, practical/field classes and individual tutorials depending on need and the particular learning objectives of each module. The study load corresponds to one third in each of the first two teaching semesters and one third for independent study for the dissertation the summer recess.

What you will study

There are a choice of four specialist pathways in addition to the MSc in Sustainability: See above.

Each of the five MSc pathways contains a common core comprising ‘Principles of Sustainability’ and ‘Transformation for Sustainability’, along with the ‘Research Training’ module. Each named pathway then comprises a specialised core module and then options drawn from a wide range of electives (c. 30 available from contributing academic Schools). All five MSc pathways feature a 60 credit individual research project, the weighting of which reflects the importance of independent investigation and permitting students to develop expertise in their chosen area through effectively four months of dedicated research.

Each of the MSc in Sustainability pathways is geared around the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge and Understanding:
Achieve a critical understanding of key sustainability principles and perspectives informing actions in pursuit of sustainable development, inclusive of environment, economy and equity considerations;
Demonstrate knowledge of approaches to evaluating and measuring sustainability;
Apply different concepts of transformation and change to enable individual and societal shifts towards more sustainable practices;

Skills:
Ability to analyse, evaluate and critically review theory and policy debates relating to sustainability;
Ability to draw on international perspectives and examples of best practice in relation to methods of evaluation and assessment of sustainability;
Ability to design and plan interventions for creating change to promote greater sustainability across different scales;
Design and undertake a substantial independent research project to address significant areas of theory and/or practice.

Capabilities:
Critique and synthesis theory and evidence drawing on a variety of sources;
Ability to communicate evidenced based reports relevant to a range of stakeholders, including policy makers;
Ability to work independently and as part of a team tackling complex environmental problems to tight deadlines;
Ability to design and evaluate transformative change leading to improved sustainability strategies, processes and plans

Transferrable skills, including building arguments, synthesis, reflexivity and making presentations.

How you will be assessed

Assessment follows a variety of styles including individual essays and practical assignments along with formal written examinations; to group exercises and peer group assessment – this is particularly important where oral presentations are involved. The independent research project (dissertation) is an excellent opportunity for a candidate to achieve deep insight into a topic of their own choice. Masters level dissertations can be very diverse, and include formal hypothesis-led research projects; theory or literature-based projects; case-study assessment and advanced professional practice evaluations. Choice of dissertations is negotiated between the student and his or her academic supervisor.

The environmental sector is one of the key growth areas in the global economy and in UK terms is comparable in size to the pharmaceutical and aerospace sectors combined. Chris Gorse is Professor of Construction and Project Management and Director of Leeds Sustainability Institute. Course detail

On this course you will undertake four 30 credit units and one 60 credit project unit.

Your course takes place over three semesters. Depending upon when you join the course, this will determine the order of units which you will study. You will benefit by beginning your studies with others who started at one of the earlier points of entry.

Induction week will prepare you well for study on your course. You will then study only one unit at a time, which will enable you to focus upon the subject. Capstone project

This Master's course provides the opportunity to undertake different types of project, a "Capstone" experience which completes the integration of your studies applied in one of the following:

• Professional Practice - the central aim of this unit is to provide you with a thorough understanding of the commercial context in which organisations operate. By reflecting upon your existing knowledge and experience you will be required to respond to a number of work-based scenarios through critical evaluation to determine an appropriate course of action.

• The Live Project - this will enable you to work as part of a team on a project provided by a business organisation. The exact nature of the level of work, and nature of responsibility will depend upon the chosen organisation. However, there will be close negotiation between the company and the Business School.

• The dissertation - this is a conventional dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words, enabling you to undertake in-depth research of a topic relating to your course. It will consist of research question, aims and objectives, rationale for undertaking the study, literature review, research methodology, analysis of findings, conclusions and recommendations.

Assessment

In line with the Business School’s commitment to practice-based education, a large part of the assessment will relate to the demonstration of your ability to understand Sustainable Management in practice.

It is the expectation of the course that you understand the theory and develop critical thinking skills, which will help you to evaluate the relevance of what you have learnt. All of this comes together by being able to demonstrate rigorous expertise for a business or related organisation.

This one-year programme is designed to equip graduates and professionals with a broad and robust training on modern power engineering technologies, with a strong focus on renewable energy conversion and smart grids. It is suitable for recent graduates who wish to develop the specialist knowledge and skills relevant to this industry and is also suitable as advanced study in preparation for research work in an academic or industrial environment.

In semesters 1 and 2, the programmes comprises a mixture of taught courses, workshops and a group design project, led by leading experts in the field, covering the key topics in power systems, electrical machines and power electronics. The final part of the programme is an individual dissertation, which provides a good opportunity for students to apply their acquired skills to real problems in electrical power engineering.

This one year programme at the University of Edinburgh will immerse the students in the most current developments in the area of Electrical Power Engineering, through a combination of taught modules, workshops, a research dissertation, and a range of supporting activities delivered by internationally leading experts in the field. The programme develops through the year from advanced fundamental topics and research tools and techniques in electrical power engineering, to specialist courses on emerging technologies and advanced numerical methods for power engineering problems, and culminates in the summer dissertation project where the acquired skills in various areas are put into practice in application to an actual power engineering problem.

Career opportunities

Governments worldwide are putting in place plans to decarbonise and modernise their electricity sector. A transition to a green economy will require a highly skilled workforce led by electrical power engineers with a solid academic background, an appreciation of the trajectory of the industry and an understanding of the challenges and implications brought about by the introduction of new power technologies.

According to the Institution for Engineering & Technology (IET): “The business of managing and distributing power in the UK is beginning to undergo revolutionary changes and [power] engineers are the people who will play a pivotal role in keeping the lights on”. This also holds true in many other developed and developing countries in the world.

Power engineers are employed in public/governmental organisations as well as in the private sector and cover areas spanning from generation, to conversion and transmission of electrical power, design and manufacturing of power components and systems, and energy policy and commerce. In the UK, experienced, chartered power engineers can earn around £45,000 a year on average*.

The programme will run in a close association with other activities within the broader Electrical Engineering programme within the School, including networking events, industrial presentations and seminars. It will benefit from the current strong connections with industry (coordinated by the Student Industry Liaison Manager, and existing research associations and consortia (such as the EPSRC Centre for Energy Systems Integration).
