Places on our School Direct programme are open to all graduates and support the following subjects: Mathematics; Physics; Chemistry; Biology; Music; Physical Education and French.

Programme Options

School Direct offers two types of training places; the School Direct Non-salaried programme and the School Salaried Direct programme.

School Direct Non-salaried programme

Our Non-salaried School Direct programme is a combination of school-based training and university-based courses. This fully comprehensive route into teaching involves schools working in partnership with an accredited teacher training institution, like ours, to devise a training programme. 

School Direct is a route into teaching which involves schools working in partnership with accredited teacher training institutions, such as ours, to devise a training programme. We have a successful track-record of working with schools to offer School Direct training routes to Qualified Teacher Status. Collectively we are committed to the development of outstanding teachers who have a transformative impact on learners' lives.

There are excellent employment opportunities with 9 out of 10 of our newly qualified teachers gaining employment within six months of completion.

During your training, you will develop the professional values and practice required to meet the broad demands of teaching. We help you build your practical knowledge and theoretical understanding of working with secondary school students. You will also develop a vital understanding of the National Curriculum and the learning needs of young adults.

School Direct Salaried programme

Our School Direct Training (Salaried) programme is open to graduates with three or more years' career experience (not necessarily in education). Trainees will be employed as an unqualified teacher with a salary subsidised by the National College for Teaching and Leadership. This programme replaces the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP).

All School Direct places will lead to a recommendation for qualified teacher status (QTS), and in the case of the School Direct Training programme a PGCE.

How to apply

Candidates apply directly to our partnership schools via UCAS Teacher Training for both programmes. For more details visit the Department for Education website. Although applications should be made via UCAS Teacher Training to a specific school, all successful candidates will be registered as students of the university.

Students are required to study the following compulsory courses.

Assessment

Continuous assessment of classroom skills and teaching effectiveness builds towards a professional development portfolio. There are also academic assignments for the PGCE.

Professional recognition

All School Direct places will lead to recommendation for qualified teacher status (QTS), and in the case of the nonsalaried School Direct Training programme a PGCE.

Degree Information

Students will be part of a school team from the start and will receive intensive support from experienced teachers in the classroom. Opportunities will exist to build networks with fellow trainees. This route leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

Where student teachers opt to gain the additional PGCE pathway, and less than 60 credits are achieved at level 7, but are successfully passed at level 6, a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE) will be awarded.

An additional PGCE pathway is also available which trainees can apply to join during the programme. Tuition fees apply.

As part of the programme students will spend time in placement at a school or college, during which time their teaching practice will be supported by a school subject tutor and mentor. For this programme students will spend the majority of the programme in school, employed as an unqualified teacher.

Teaching and Learning

The programme is delivered via a series of lectures and workshop at the UCL Institute of Education for 15 days (10 days' Professional Studies and five days subject-specific training) spread over the autumn and spring terms. The placement schools are responsible for providing an additional 45 days of training activities, alongside the practical teaching experience. Students are assessed on their practical teaching and their progress in achieving the standards for Qualified Teacher Status by gathering evidence in the form of a portfolio.

The School Direct Training Programme (salaried) is an employment-based route for experienced graduates (preferably those with first or upper second-class degree classification in an area relevant to Art and Design) and who have at least three years’ work experience. The mainstream graduate entry pathway on the Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT) programme is designed for those who wish to work with babies and children from birth to five years old. Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) will be awarded to graduates who have been judged to have met all of the Teachers' Standards (Early Years).

About this programme

Early Years Teachers will be specialists in early childhood development and the EYFS Framework. As highly skilled graduate leaders, they will be responsible for facilitating and leading high quality professional practice in early years settings. Participants will leave the programme as reflective practitioners who work with integrity, fostering positive relationships with parents/carers and children as well as other professionals.

Students undertake modules to the value of 60 credits.

The programme consists of three core modules (60 credits total), plus 130 placement days across the range of ages within the EYFS and a 10 day key stage 1/2 placement.

Where less than 60 credits are achieved at Master’s level (level 7), but are successfully passed at undergraduate/Bachelor’s level (level 6), a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE) will be awarded.

An additional pathway is also available for those already employed in an early years setting.

Acknowledging the key importance that quality education has on the outcomes for young children from their earliest years, government reforms in initial teacher education are focused on the years birth to five. Consequently, graduates from this specialist EYITT programme are highly sought after throughout the EYFS sector..

This dynamic and exciting programme offers a fantastic opportunity to enhance your critical thinking an analytical skills whilst developing an enquiring, reflective and innovative approach to contemporary educational and professional practice.

It is suitable for a wide range of individuals from health and social care settings who wish to gain qualified teacher status.

The programme will enable you to pass on to your students the values required in modern healthcare, and within the NHS Constitution, including: compassion, kindness, empathy, advocacy, good communication and teamwork skills, and respect for patients’ privacy, dignity and individuality.

Programme structure

All students are initially registered for five years. The programme is part-time. On successful completion of the Postgraduate Certificate Education for Professional Practice programme NMC registered practitioners may apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Council for recognition of their Qualified Teacher Status and be recorded on their Registration record.

The programme is in line with the NMC Standards for Learning and Teaching in Practice (2008).

Example module listing

This pathway is open to individuals from health care environments who wish to extend their knowledge, skills and develop their understanding through critical thinking and analysis.

For nurses and midwives, this forms part of the NMC standards for Supporting Learning and Assessing in Practice (Stage 4 - Teacher).

On completion of the three core modules, plus the requisite 360 teaching hours, the nurse or midwife can record this study as meeting the standards for the qualified teacher and therefore register the qualification with the NMC.

Learning and teaching module selection

The ethos of the programme is based on an individual’s developmental learning journey and, as such, commences at the initial applicant enquiry.

It is at this stage that an informal discussion will take place possibly with the administrator, module leader and/or the Director of Studies (DOS) to offer information regarding the modules/programmes whether it is Mentorship, Practice Teacher or Qualified Teacher.

Through this enquiry, a general discussion takes place that will assist the individual to make an informed decision as to the right journey of learning based on their learning needs, taking into account previous study and the requirements for their professional role in learning and teaching.

A nurse or midwife could apply for AP(E)L for up to 100 per cent against the Mentorship programme and the Practice Teacher qualification if appropriate study has been successfully completed.

This process takes place rarely but the mechanism is still in place. Each application for AP(E)L is considered on an individual basis by the AP(E)L committee using the University’s standard AP(E)L procedures.

Mentorship module

The Mentorship module can be accessed by a variety of health care professionals who have a responsibility to support learning in practice and forms part of the NMC standards for Supporting Learning and Assessment in Practice (Mentor).

A nurse or midwife wishing to undertake this module will be required to have one year’s post-qualification experience prior to attending. In preparation for this module, you would be encouraged to engage in the Associate Mentor preparation provision, which will be offered within NHS Trusts, led by Trust personnel with educational responsibilities.

The Mentorship module is a generic module (offered at FHEQ Level 6 and FHEQ Level 7) and forms part of the NMC standards to support learning and assessment in practice (stage 2 – Mentor).

It assists participants to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills through exploration, enquiry and reflexivity, aiming to develop and enhance effective assessment and facilitation skills.

Students will have an opportunity to explore learning and teaching strategies relevant to practice; assessment and evaluation in the context of giving feedback, measuring achievements, competence and quality.

The exciting challenge is to contextualise these areas for each student to ensure that the learning experience is meaningful.

Those who show an aptitude for learning, teaching and supporting learners or a keen interest in this area will be actively encouraged to progress on to further study.

Practice Teacher qualification

The Practice Teacher NMC qualification can be accessed by individuals on the NMC register. This pathway includes Supporting Education in Practice, and the Practice Module for the Practice Teacher.

Both modules are offered at FHEQ level 7. Pre-requisite study for this qualification is Mentorship FHEQ Level 6 or FHEQ Level 7.

This qualification forms part of the NMC standards for Supporting Learning and Assessment in Practice (Stage 3 – Practice Teacher), which offers preparation for Primary Care nurses who are supporting learners undertaking Specialist Community Public Health nursing qualifications and Specialist Practice qualifications.

Throughout the Practice Teacher programme, Practice Teacher students are supported by a qualified Practice Teacher to assist in developing skills associated with supporting specialist practice students.

Undertaking the Supporting Education in Practice module gives the opportunity for the student Practice Teachers to consider and critically evaluate links between theory and practice, and to explore strategies relevant for the facilitation and support of learning within the workplace.

The Practice Module for the Practice Teacher is an effective strategy to test and extend your skills in supporting specialist practice students throughout their specialist practice programme.

Opportunities are given to actively be involved in formative and summative assessments whilst being supported by a qualified Practice Teacher.

On successful completion of the Supporting Education in Practice module and the Practice Module for the Practice Teacher, the nurse can record this study as meeting the NMC standards for the Practice Teacher Qualification and be annotated on the local register of Practice Teachers which is held and maintained within their Trust.

Education Leads within the Trusts are sent information as to who has been successful in achieving this qualification.

The key focus of our School Direct programmes is to equip you with the knowledge and skills to teach across the primary age phase (electing to specialise within either the 3–7, 5–11 or 7–11 age range). Course details

The School of Education at the University of Birmingham has a long tradition of delivering teacher training courses. The Initial Teacher Education course

The PGDipEd course lasts 36 weeks, of which 24 are spent in our partnership schools.

Teaching practice will take several forms: school placements and also team teaching while at the University. You will also get involved in small scale research projects for your assignments so that you can evaluate the theory in practice and integrate this learning into your own teaching.

Learning and teaching

A variety of teaching styles and approaches to learning are used in the presentation of the themes. These include University-based lectures, small group seminars and workshops, school-based work with pupils and teachers, and work undertaken individually or with other groups of students.

Course Structure

The PGDipEd is divided into five phases: 

  1. Preparation (university-based with some activities in school) 
  2. School Placement 1 (seven week placement in school with tutor visit and one day at the university) 
  3. Development (university-based with some activities in school) 
  4. School Placement 2 (twelve week block placement with tutor visits and two university days);
  5. Completion (two further weeks in your second school and two weeks at the university).

The course includes the following areas of study:

Subject-based teaching methods

You follow one main method programme, each of which occupies at least three half-days a week for five weeks in each of the autumn and spring terms and two weeks in the summer term. In some subjects a field course, involving work with children, may replace a number of single days in the year. Assessment is based on coursework undertaken during the year.  

School-based work  

School-based work is an important part of the programme, with students normally spending 24 weeks in schools. The combination of block practice and other periods of work in schools enables you to benefit from both carefully supported introductory work in different schools and the experience of spending a significant length of time in one school.

The final assessment of teaching is based on the spring/summer term school placement. Assessment is shared between University tutors, staff responsible for students in schools, and external examiners. All aspects of your contribution to the life of the school are taken into account, in particular the teaching of your main subject.

Prior to the start of the autumn term you are expected to undertake a preliminary period of observation in a primary/middle school near your home or lodgings. During the course supervised experience and practice are arranged in schools of various kinds across the 11–18 age range. We are fortunate in being able to work with a wide range of partnership schools, including mixed comprehensives, single-sex schools and sixth-form colleges. Many of the schools offer opportunities to work with pupils from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds.  

Whole-school issues

This area of study is concerned with aspects of education that are of importance to all intending teachers, irrespective of their particular teaching subjects. It is designed to provide you with a breadth of awareness, depth of insight and development of skills through a range of themes studied by all students. Themes currently include Managing Inclusion, Monitoring and Assessment, and Pastoral Care and Citizenship.  

Tutoring and support

You will personally be allocated a university tutor who will guide and support you throughout your PGDipEd (QTS), along with a dedicated school mentor when on placement.

Progression

Once you have completed your PGDipEd (QTS) and successfully passed your induction year you may return to study with us on a part-time basis to complete a 60 credit dissertation and obtain an MA in Teaching Studies

As a student teacher you will want to learn about and practise the teaching of your own subject. The School Direct Programme (Salaried) is a new route into teaching at both primary and secondary levels. Participating schools, or clusters of schools that join together, are allocated a set number of student-teacher places which can be applied for. Students will earn a salary while they train.

Degree information

Students will be part of a school team from the start and will receive intensive support from experienced teachers in the classroom. Opportunities will exist to build networks with fellow trainees. This route leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

There are two compulsory school placements. Students are expected to complete the associated tasks, and to build a portfolio of evidence during the academic year to demonstrate they have met national teaching standards.

Students do not undertake academic credits on this programme. However, all components will need to be assessed to gain QTS.

Trainees may apply for an additional PGCE pathway during the programme (tuition fees apply). Students who gain 60 credits at level 7 (Master’s level) receive a PGCE; where 60 credits are passed at level 6 (undergraduate level) a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE) is awarded.

Placement
As part of the programme students will spend time in placement at a school or college, during which time their teaching practice will be supported by a school subject tutor and mentor. For this programme students will spend the majority of the programme in school, employed as an unqualified teacher.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered via a series of lectures and workshop at the UCL Institute of Education for 15 days (10 days' Professional Studies and five days subject-specific training) spread over the autumn and spring terms. The placement schools are responsible for providing an additional 45 days of training activities, alongside the practical teaching experience. Students are assessed on their practical teaching and their progress in achieving the standards for Qualified Teacher Status by gathering evidence in the form of a portfolio.

Careers

Graduates of UCL Institute of Education's Drama teacher training programmes are currently working across a broad range of areas. Some are working as English teachers and heads of English departments and faculties in schools, while others have jobs as mentors of English PGCE students. About this programme

We draw on current research at the IOE and elsewhere to inform a student's social science teaching, encouraging them to engage with recent debates, literature and policy in the field. Our underlying aim is to develop students as reflective and highly skilled teachers. As a 14-19 programme, there is an explicit focus on teaching examination classes in an interactive way.

Students undertake two level 7 (Master’s-level) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.

You will spend most of your time (120 days) in schools, working with sociology or psychology mentors who support you through your two school placements. Social Science Student Teachers will teach their main social science subject (usually sociology and/or psychology) at AS and possibly A level. At GCSE, most student teachers teach sociology and some teach psychology. In some placements there are opportunities to contribute to relevant vocational qualifications and Key Stage 3 humanities.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered via keynote lectures, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at the IOE, as well as time spent in placements. Assessment is by practical teaching, assignments and portfolio tasks.

We offer a one year part-time Evidence Informed Practice PGCE for those studying this route into teaching.

MA Deaf Education is taught over two years through a combination of face-to-face and online learning. Approved by the Department for Education (DFE) to offer the Mandatory Qualification for Teachers of the Deaf, the programme integrates cutting-edge research knowledge with practitioner expertise to develop skilled, knowledgeable and critical practitioners. All students are enrolled on the MA Deaf Education (ToD) programme but they may choose to graduate with a Post Graduate Diploma (PG Dip) Deaf Education (Teacher of the Deaf). It is also possible to complete an MA Deaf Education without the teacher of the deaf qualification.

Central to the programme is an understanding that the establishment of language fluency and effective communication as a basis for cognitive development, social development and access to the curriculum must be the educational priority for all deaf learners. Individual auditory potential must be carefully evaluated and regularly reappraised in relation to the communicative and educational demands of the context, so that advances in personal and assistive hearing technologies combined with the latest thinking on optimal classroom management can be put into practice.

Unique to this programme is recognition of the plural and diverse linguistic contexts of deaf children’s lives. Through consideration of the roles of spoken and signed languages and increasingly sophisticated hearing technologies in deaf children’s lives and education, you will develop a broad language base and the skills to respond flexibly to deaf children’s dynamic and changing communication needs.

We welcome suitably qualified deaf and hearing applicants, and provide appropriate access and support arrangements for all students. Bursaries are offered to UK Deaf Education schools or services funding more than one student per school or service in a single year.

Course content

MA Deaf Education comprises four core modules delivered across two years. Your first module will be either Deafness and Development or Educational Audiology, depending on when you commence your studies.

If you are working towards the Teacher of the Deaf (ToD) award, you will also build a Professional Skills Portfolio throughout the two years. This applied aspect of the programme allows you to acquire and demonstrate the mandatory teaching, communication and audiological skills required of a ToD.

Learning and teaching

Each core module comprises a study day or a short residential in Leeds, followed by twelve online taught sessions, two online tutorials and a regional tutorial. Bespoke online meetings, phone, email and Skype support is also available from tutors.

We expect you to commit the equivalent of a study day per week to this programme -- to be negotiated with your employer at the application stage. Some practical requirements of the programme are difficult to fulfil without this allocated time. We also ask you to identify someone in your school or service who will act as a mentor for you throughout the training.

Assessment

We assess the four core modules and dissertation through written assignments. The Professional Skills Portfolio is practically assessed and includes a minimum of a four-week supervised teaching placement.

Professional Skills Portfolio

The Professional Skills Portfolio module is compulsory if you are working towards the ToD qualification. The modules allows you to acquire and demonstrate the range of practical and practice based skills that you need as a Teacher of the Deaf. We outline the four strands to be completed below.

Audiology.

This strand provides guidance for developing practical skills with audiological technology and its management within different educational settings.

Communication

This strand focuses on the development of communication skills through reflective practice with both pupils and parents. It includes recording and analysing a pupil’s language use, evaluation of personal language use when teaching a pupil or group of pupils, and a reflective and critical review of a home visit.

Placement

This strand entails either one or two four-week teaching placements, depending on current and previous professional experience. At least one placement will be undertaken in an unfamiliar setting and be supported by a regional tutor.

Professional Competencies

This portfolio contains details of the ToD competencies against which you will track your progress throughout the two year course. It will also provide the means through which to identify objectives for continued professional development.

Career opportunities

MA Deaf Education provides Teachers of the Deaf with the specialist knowledge and skills they need to work across a range of settings in deaf education and provides the mandatory qualification required for England and Wales.

Graduates from the course have taken up a range of positions in specialist support services and schools. Many have subsequently progressed to management and leadership roles.

About this programme

The Music PGCE introduces students to the broad scope of Music as a curriculum subject across the 11-16 age range. The course is designed to support musicians in coming to an understanding of what it means to be an effective and succesful music educator. Our priority is to develop your expertise in a variety of teaching situations, by exploring a range of different teaching styles. We will offer a range of perspectives on the principles of syllabus design, evaluation and assessment. We aim to deepen students' theoretical understanding of educational issues through engaging practical music workshops, lectures, seminars and tutorials.

Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.

The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level (level 7) modules, which are assessed through written assignments and practical musicianship tasks, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.

Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Completion of the Professional Practice module and one or two level 6 (undergraduate/Bachelor’s level) modules, will lead to the Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE).

History, according to the current national curriculum, “should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past”. Our aim is to equip students to do just that, developing their ability to plan meaningful historical experiences for pupils in the 11-16 age range, to teach effectively and to assess their own and their pupils’ achievements.

Students will be joining the largest History PGCE programme in the country, allowing them to benefit from a team of tutors with a wide range of expertise and interests. Students will also be able to develop strong peer networks across tutor groups and share ideas, resources and advice. The IOE History PGCE offers students unique opportunities such as placements at museums or other historical sites, in order to develop understanding of learning history outside the classroom.

The IOE has one of the largest groups of university-based history education specialists in the world and hosts the Centre for Holocaust Education and the award-winning First World War Centenary Battlefields Tours Programme. The programme draws on this expertise, for example, providing the opportunity to complete a full two-day teachers’ programme in Holocaust Education as part of the PGCE.

About this programme

This programme enables students to engage critically with a number of approaches and issues relating to languages education, such as the teaching of grammar, the incorporation of literature into lessons, target language use and the monitoring and assessment of pupils' learning. It incorporates a range of approaches to effective, inclusive learning, and develops a student’s professionalism and critical awareness to a high level. Wherever possible, we provide opportunities for trainees to gain experience at Key Stage 5 (post-16 age range).

The Languages PGCE programme places a strong emphasis on cultural knowledge, use of literature in the languages classroom, pupils' use of target language and broader aspects of language learning. This includes issues related to bilingual learners and English as an additional language and other areas such as information and communications technology and digital, video and multimedia production.

The IOE has well-established partnerships with cultural and educational institutions across London, as well as European and Chinese universities and teacher training institutions. Our partnership with over 200 secondary schools and colleges in Greater London and beyond enables each of our students to become a skilled and confident teacher in their chosen subject specialism.

The PGCE is informed by research, including research carried out by PGCE tutors into target language use, the teaching of literature and the storyline approach.
