The 2-year MSc in Nursing (Adult) is open to applicants who have already completed an honours degree and have a minimum of 750 hours’ experience in a healthcare setting in the last year.

The curriculum for the MSc in Nursing is designed to meet the needs of the changing demography in the wider population and the emerging health needs. A range of teaching and learning strategies are implemented to engage the learner including simulation, practice learning, lectures, skills rehearsals, and online digital learning resources.

Practice based learning is central to the students’ development, and Nursing (Adult) students will spend 40 weeks of their course on placement. Here they will gain experience in a diverse range of nursing settings, including community, nursing homes, and hospitals.

The Nursing (Adult) programme has been designed to develop the students’ personal and professional attributes, knowledge and skills required of a newly registered nurse.

The Nursing (Adult) course does not follow the usual University term times. The academic year starts in early September and ends late the following August. 

50% of the teaching for Nursing students will take place in healthcare placements, and the other 50% will be taught at university.

Students will learn how to deal with real-life situations in the form of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), poster presentations and will even write a journal article ready for publication.

Keele University School of Nursing & Midwifery offer this pathway as an NMC approved, full-time one-year Specialist Community Nursing programme: District Nursing. Specialist Community Nurses provide up-to–date, specialist and highly technical care to patients in their own environments as well as supporting families and carers. As a district nurse today you need to be highly skilled and educated to manage the changing demographics of communities and populations you will work within; you will be expected to lead teams of both qualified and support staff in a community setting. Recent government policy outlines a call to action and model for district nursing services and this award, providing a qualification in Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing Pathway), is timely to support this, leading to a recordable specialist qualification with the NMC.

Course Aims

The course has been designed to produce specialist community nursing practitioners who are safe, competent, and professional, to lead district nursing in a community nursing setting. This includes meeting Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for Specialist Community Nursing, Education and Practice. You will develop your leadership skills whilst on the programme, so that you are able to plan and lead services and initiatives which promote health, support long-term conditions, and provide specialist nursing care, including community practitioner prescribing as applicable to your role. You will achieve the recordable qualification through the Postgraduate diploma; however, there is the opportunity to undertake a dissertation through a part-time route to convert this post-graduate diploma to a Master’s Degree.

A new vision developed for District Nursing (DH 2013) Care in local communities: a new vision and model for district nursing will underpin the content and delivery of the pathway with a focus on 'Compassion in Practice' underpinning the new model focussing on:
- Population and case load management
- Support and care for patients who are unwell, recevoering at home and at end of life
- Support and care for independence

The aim of this programme is to support the development and enhancement of essential knowledge and skills in the registered practitioner to equip them for a career in specialist community nursing. This will be actualised through building upon the theoretical and clinical basis of their specialised area of practice, through delivery of a cohertent programme of study.

The District Nursing pathway will have a contemporary focus and is designed to meet the requirements of the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards for Specialist Education and Practice (UKCC 2001).

The programme will support students in applying their skills of critical reflection to enhance their professional, personal and academic development. It will encourage the development of sound District Nursing practice based on the critical application of research and evidence and will introduce students to theories and practice of leadership and partnership working.

Apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for this postgraduate programme.

Completing your Masters

The Postgraduate Diploma Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting & School Nursing pathways) and the Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing pathway) awards – registerable with the NMC – each comprise of six taught modules to meet individual or service requirements in year 1 as a full time student.

Successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma will lead to the NMC approved specialist and registerable qualification ‘Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting)’, ‘Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (School Nursing)’ or the Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing), depending upon the route that the student registers for.

Students who have met the requirements for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma will be eligible to proceed into year 2, onto the Masters’ award – subject to the rules of progression. The award of an MSc Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting or School Nursing) requires successful completion of the Professional Practice dissertation (MSc route 1) or the Faculty dissertation module (MSc route 2), on a part-time basis.

The Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing) programme will share modules with the P.G Dip/MSc Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Programme. This will enhance Inter-professional learning with other community specialist nurses working in primary care.

You will also begin to develop academic and research skills.

Year 2 to builds on the work undertaken previously, but also introduces factors which influence health and well-being such as global and national public health priorities. In addition, you will acquire deeper understanding of inter-professional healthcare delivery which includes looking at aspects of co-production, individuals’ rights and inclusion.

Nurses today need to be able to demonstrate competence in nursing care across the patient’s lifespan. To deliver this, they need to be able to work flexibly, inter-professionally and collaboratively in a dynamic and ever changing health care arena.

Our nursing programme has been written to take account of the key drivers in health care at local, national and international levels and was developed in partnership with our clinical partners, students, service users and carers.

During each year of the programme you will learn alongside colleagues in all fields of nursing, and will work with peers from the MN and the undergraduate nursing programme. The course is designed so that you will acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding which gives you specific skills, knowledge and competences to work within a variety of health-care settings. There is increasing nursing field specialisation as the programme progresses which keeps you abreast of the current developments within your chosen field of nursing. On completion, this course will support you to become a creative, innovated and dynamic nurse with an excellent grounding in nursing theory and practice.

Year 1 lays the foundations about what the role of the nurse is and introduces you to the Nursing and Midwifery code as well as theories and models of nursing and nursing skills. It also focuses on anatomy and physiology, determinants of health across the life span, communication, compassionate care, and ethics and inter-professional working. You will also begin to develop academic and research skills.
Year 2 to builds on the work undertaken previously, but also introduces factors which influence health and well-being such as global and national public health priorities. You will explore the impact of altered health status on the individual and their family/carers over the life span. In addition, you will acquire deeper understanding of inter-professional healthcare delivery which includes looking at aspects of co-production, individuals’ rights and inclusion.

Year 3 builds and consolidates your knowledge within your specific field of nursing. Here you will looks more specifically at complex health care needs, health care delivery, interventions, governance, leadership and decision-making. You will undertake a literature review which provides opportunities to build upon your prior learning and experience in an area of interest to you.

Overview

The School Nursing pathway reflects the current standards and initiatives for School Nursing, developing public health awareness and the understanding of key health challenges using a social model of health and well-being. The course has a particular in-depth focus on the physical, social and emotional aspects of school-age health and well-being, recognising how these contribute to social capital and life chances.

The programme will support students in applying their skills of critical reflection to enhance their professional, personal and academic development. It will encourage the development of sound School Nursing Practice based on the critical application of research and evidence and will introduce students to theories and practice of leaderhship and partnership-working. Students' clinical placement experience will enable them to gain expertise in the full range of School Nursing skills, through observation and practice supervised by a Practice Teacher.

Through undertaking the award, you will be prepared to work with communities, families and individuals to improve health and reduce health inequalities, to optimise life chances, in partnership with people and organisations, in support of the government health and social agenda. On successful completion of this course you are able to register with the NMC on the third part of the register as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse.

Course Aims

This course has been designed to produce specialist community public health practitioners who are safe, competent, and deliver professional practice in a community public health setting, meeting Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for Specialist Community Public Health Nursing. The programme will support you in applying the skills of critical reflection to enhance your professional, personal and academic development. It will encourage the development of a sound School Nursing practice, based on the critical application of research and evidence and will introduce you to theories and practice of leadership and partnership-working. You will engage within clinical placements and gain expertise in the full range of School Nursing skills, through observation and practice supervised by a Practice Teacher. You will achieve the recordable qualification through the Postgraduate diploma; however, there is the opportunity to undertake a dissertation through a part-time route to convert this post-graduate diploma to a Master’s Degree.

Additional Costs

Apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for this postgraduate programme.

Completing your Masters

The Postgraduate Diploma Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting & School Nursing pathways) and the Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing pathway) awards – registerable with the NMC – each comprise of six taught modules to meet individual or service requirements in year 1 as a full time student.

Successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma will lead to the NMC approved specialist and registerable qualification ‘Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting)’, ‘Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (School Nursing)’ or the Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing), depending upon the route that the student registers for.

Students who have met the requirements for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma will be eligible to proceed into year 2, onto the Masters’ award – subject to the rules of progression. The award of an MSc Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting or School Nursing) requires successful completion of the Professional Practice dissertation (MSc route 1) or the Faculty dissertation module (MSc route 2), on a part-time basis.

The Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing) programme will share modules with the P.G Dip/MSc Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Programme. This will enhance Inter-professional learning with other community specialist nurses working in primary care.

Applicants who wish to undertake some clinical streams of study - (Emergency Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Intensive Care Nursing or Nurse Practitioner) will be required to have registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and appropriate clinical employment in an approved clinical agency prior to application. Progression to further studies

Students entering at Entry levels 1 and 2 can complete a research thesis (24 points) that will provide a pathway to a higher degree by research.

Alternative exit(s)

Students may exit this course early and apply to graduate with one of the following awards, provided they have satisfied the requirements for that award during their enrolment in the Masters course:

- Graduate Certificate of Advanced Nursing after successful completion of 24 points with a minimum of 18 credit points at level 4 or above. Students who complete 24 points from a particular specialisation in Part A will have the name of the specialisation on their transcript.

- Graduate Diploma of Advanced Nursing after successful completion of 48 points, with a minimum of 36 credit points at level 4 or above. Students who complete 24 points from a particular specialisation in Part A will have the name of the specialisation on their transcript.

Transfer of Graduate Credit for MSN:

Acceptable graduate credit of up to twelve credit hours, earned in a regionally accredited institution in which the student was enrolled in that institution’s graduate school, may be transferred and applied to the requirements for a master’s degree if approved by the CCN and Graduate School.

Consideration of credit does not guarantee transfer. Evaluation of credit for transfer will not be made until after the student has enrolled in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama.

Admission Requirements for MSN:

Admission requirements are consistent with those of the Graduate School. Applicants for the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) will be considered on a competitive basis.

- Nurses who are interested in the Case Management Program, NP Concentration, and CNL Program are encouraged to contact the Capstone College of Nursing (CCN) Graduate Recruitment and Retention Liaison. Currently only residents of Alabama and Mississippi are eligible for the Nurse Practitioner Concentration.

Note: Currently, only baccalaureate prepared registered nurses who are residents of Alabama and Mississippi are eligible for admission to the NP concentration. There is no post-master’s certificate option. Please check this site in the future for changes in the residency requirement.

Application Process for MSN:

Enrollment into the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program is available for fall semester each year. Your completed application must be received by the April 1st deadline.

MSN Application Process

1. Begin your graduate application at the Graduate School’s Application Center.

2. Request transcripts following the Graduate School’s transcript instructions.

3. Submit supporting documents. Within 48 hours of submitting the initial part of your application, you will receive an e-mail with your Campus-Wide Identification (CWID) number. It is very important that you safeguard this number. Once you have received this e-mail, you will need to submit the following documents through Manage Supporting Documents.

- Statement of purpose
- Resume or curriculum vitae
- Contact information for two references – The references should be professionals who can provide insight regarding your potential for success in the doctoral program. The Graduate School will contact these references via e-mail.
- Copy of active RN license from every state in which you are licensed. Note: Licensure must be maintained throughout the program.

Additionally, we may require the following:

- Official MAT or GRE score – If your grade point average (GPA) is lower than a 3.0, based on a 4.0 sytem, either overall or in your last 60 hours, an acceptable Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or must be submitted by the testing service to the Graduate School, Box 870118, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487. Test scores may not be older than 5 years of the application date. Use school code 1012 for MAT and 1830 for GRE.

- English proficiency exam score – Whether an international or a permanent resident, if your first language is not English, you must submit an official score report from one of the following proficiency examinations: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or Pearson Test of English (PTE).

Upon admission, you will receive written notification of admission from the Dean of the Graduate School. You will also receive a letter from the Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs at CCN outlining requirements for entry into the MSN program.

The MSN program will offer two options: Nursing Education and Adult-Gerontology CNS. Students can complete the MSN curriculum on a full-time or a part-time basis; however, all requirements for the degree must be completed in six years or less. The course format for both MSN programs offers a mixture of hybrid and online learning. On-campus courses are held in the late afternoon or evening hours. The online courses offer synchronous and asynchronous formats to enable working professionals the flexibility to pursue a graduate degree while still maintaining their full-time employment.

Graduates of this program may seek employment in educational settings, acute or long-term care settings, or community health care agencies. The MSN curriculum of West Chester University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) through 2019.

The M.S. in Nursing (M.S.N.) will offer a choice of instructional focus after completing the eight core component courses in the graduate program: adult-gerontology clinical nurse specialist (CNS) or nursing education. Graduates of the adult-gerontology CNS track will be eligible to take the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) certification exam in adult gerontology. Graduates of the nursing-education track will be eligible to take the National League for Nursing (NLN) certified nurse educator exam. The program will be offered in a combination of face-to-face, hybrid, and distance-education formats.

At the end of the M.S.N. program, the graduate will be able to:

Nurses who advance to administrative positions often find themselves struggling with their new responsibilities related to budgetary, human resources, organizational, policy and management matters. The dual-degree program is designed to ensure that students not only advance their professional nursing credentials, but also develop knowledge and skills for effective management. The dual-degree program is targeted specifically to students in the Community Health Nursing program who have selected the Nurse Administrator role.

By carefully structuring the sequence of courses, recognizing comparable course offerings, and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, students are often able to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study without compromising the professional standards of either program.

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) housed in the College of Community and Public Affairs and Master of Science in Nursing (MS Nursing) housed in the Decker School of Nursing offer a dual MPA-MS Nursing degree program to provide students at Binghamton University with a unique opportunity. By carefully structuring the sequence of courses, recognizing comparable course offerings and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, the MPA-MS Nursing dual degree program allows students to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study, without compromising the professional standards of either program. The 42-credit hour MPA program and the 48-credit hour MS Nursing program can be completed as part of a 68-credit hour program (rather than 90 credit hours required to complete the two programs without the benefit of the dual degree structure).
The MPA-MS Nursing Dual Degree Program prepares students for nursing administrator positions in hospitals, health care facilities and community health agencies. Students must apply and be admitted to both the MPA program and the MS Nursing program. These are separate applications and each requires an application fee to the Graduate School. Students who begin one program and then apply to the other program later will need to meet with the appropriate advisors for both programs to develop a customized program of study; completion within three years may not be possible for students who do not begin the programs in the same semester.

When evaluating the letters of recommendation, the admissions committee looks for evidence of academic achievement, community involvement, and personal characteristics that suggests the applicant has the capacity to foster an institutional culture that advances democratic administration and governance.

- Personal statement
The personal statement should be no more than 500 words or two (2) double-spaced, typed pages and should answer the question,"Why do I want an MPA?" You may wish to describe your reasons for pursuing graduate studies in public administration, your career aspirations, your special interests within your field, and any unusual features of your background that might need explanation or be of interest to your program's admissions committee. In the personal statement, the committee assesses the student's commitment to public and/or nonprofit administration as well as his/her ability to communicate in writing.

- Significant work experience (5 or more years in the public and/or nonprofit sectors) can earn applicants a positive adjustment to their admissions scores. However, the lack of work experience does not result in a penalty.

MS Nursing:
- Undergraduate degree in nursing from a program which is accredited by a nursing accreditation organization
- Previous (successful completion of a) course in descriptive statistics
- A license to practice as a registered professional nurse
- Passing completion of the NCLEX examination (must be completed prior to the start of clinical courses)

This postgraduate nursing programme is designed for graduates from other disciplines who wish to gain professional registration in Adult, Children's or Mental Health Nursing. The programme runs over two years. 

The programme focuses on quality care, cutting edge clinical skills and is designed to be both research intensive and research informed. You will learn the pivotal roles of nurse and client, while developing your nursing skills and building your knowledge of professional and ethical practice. This innovative programme ensures our students meet the registration requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council. 

Subjects such as nursing bioscience, professional practice, research, evidence-based practice, policy and clinical leadership, as well as adult, children's or mental health nursing are studied. The programme is divided between theoretical modules and clinical practice, with blocks of time spent in clinical placement.

You will have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of healthcare settings. Opportunities for national and international electives are also offered.

Course purpose

The primary aim of the programme is to support students as they progress towards registered practitioner level and beyond, and to provide a framework within which they can acquire and demonstrate both generic transferable competencies and those specific to their area of practice.

However, the use of APEL permits us to offer a programme of two years duration to those applicants who can show evidence of prior learning relevant to the programme.

Placement Opportunities

In order to provide excellent clinical learning experiences for our students, we work in partnership with the NHS and with the independent health and social care sector across Essex to provide placement opportunities. You will work with experienced nurses in a diverse range of clinical settings (primary and secondary care, public and private sectors, adult and the elderly, acute care and specialist services).

Whilst on placement you will have a mentor allocated to you, and contact with a member of the academic team linked to that placement.

You can choose to study this course at either our Colchester campus or our Southend campus - and your placements will correspond to the campus you choose. Colchester students will have placements in north Essex, while Southend students will have placements in south Essex.

Professional accreditation

Successful completion of the course will allow you to register as a qualified nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

You can take advantage of our links with the Institute of Social and Economic Research, which conducts large-scale survey projects, many for government, EU and other public agencies, and has its own library. The UK Data Archive is also based at our Colchester Campus and stores national research data.
