The Literacy Specialist program has been designed to meet the certification regulations of the New York State Education Department, as well as the Standards for Literacy Professionals of the International Reading Association. Portfolio

In addition to the general application materials required by the University of Alabama Graduate School and the Department of Educational Leadership, Policy & Technology Studies, applicants must construct an application portfolio, as required by Ala. Admin. Code §290-3-3-.48(1)(b). For entry into a cohort beginning in the Summer Term, the application portfolio is due in the Department by April 1. For entry into a cohort beginning in the Spring Term, the application portfolio is due in the Department by November 1. For entry into a cohort beginning in the Fall Term, the application portfolio is due in the Department by July 1.

The application portfolio must contain the following items:

- Three letters of recommendation, including one from the applicant’s principal or supervisor;

- Completed copy (all forms) of most recent performance appraisal to include the professional development component if available;

- Evidence of ability to improve student achievement;

- Evidence of leadership and management potential including evidence of most recent accomplishments in the area of educational leadership;

- Summary statement of applicant’s reasons for pursuing instructional leadership certification;

- Summary statement of what the applicant expects from the program; and,

- The applicant’s vitae.

Items should be placed in a large envelope in the order of the above list, have divider pages between items, and mailed to Vanessa Williams, The University of Alabama, Box 870302, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35487-0302 or hand-delivered to 301 Graves Hall (main campus) or to the UA Gadsden Center.

Assessment Center

The purpose of the Assessment Center is to first fulfill the regulatory requirement of a face-to-face interview with each applicant. The Assessment Center will also include other activities designed to provide additional information, particularly with respect to candidate dispositions and candidate writing skills, to adequately assess candidate aptitude for instructional leadership.

Cohort Numbers

Cohorts will be limited to twenty-five participants at two locations: Tuscaloosa (main campus) and at the UA Gadsden Center. Additional cohorts will be admitted at either location, if there are sufficient eligible candidates and available faculty members.

The program of study for the Master of Arts Degree in Educational Leadership, leading to initial certification in Alabama for Instructional Leadership, will be composed of thirty (30) semester hours of coursework, including the following courses:

Field experience objectives, including progression from observation through participation to leading behaviors, will be embedded in each course and assessed by the faculty member of record for each course. Throughout this program, instructional activities are aligned with instructional objectives. The faculty member of record has the responsibility of assigning the LiveText assessment (1, 2, 3, 4) for each objective, and instructional activities will also generate documentation for the electronic portfolio aspect of LiveText, which will append to the assessment ratings.

Uniqueness of Program

The MST Childhood Education program is both NCATE accredited and nationally recognized by the ACEI. Candidates may complete most, but not all, of their degree requirements in the Watertown area if they choose. Also, Canadian students who complete this program and all New York State teacher certification requirements are eligible to apply to the Ontario College of Teachers for Ontario certification at the primary/ junior divisions. This program is intended for candidates who do not hold a teaching certificate and seek to earn certification in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6). Graduate Certificate Program Consumer Conflict Management, Negotiation, and Mediation

Workplace research indicates that managers and supervisors spend as much as forty percent of the workday resolving nonproductive conflict issues. Conflict that is poorly managed results in burdening costs for both the individual and the organization. Expanding worldwide development, the global economy, and population growth and associated social issues drive the intermingling of cultures and practices that increase the incidence of workplace conflict and destructive disagreement. Interest in and demand for conflict management has consequently risen.

The Graduate Certificate in Conflict Management, Negotiation, and Mediation provides students with the tools to manage, resolve, negotiate, and mediate conflict and to develop intrapersonal and interpersonal skills for living and earning. Conflict management training actively engages the student in self-exploration regarding issues of perception, bigotry, bias, values, beliefs, differences, and culture. The student will learn how to verbally and physically converse without allowing differences to interfere with collaboration. Business, government, and community agencies value these skills to increase productivity and to maximize a positive workplace climate. The ability to creatively manage conflict is a skill that most employers value.

This program is designed to impart concepts and practical knowledge of professional accounting to students and to develop their conceptual and analytical abilities for the attainment of professional accounting qualifications.

The Master of Accountancy (MAcc) Program has enjoyed a strong reputation as a highly-respected program since its launch in 1998. In 2008, the Program curriculum was re-designed to also cater for the emerging needs of non-accounting degree graduates who would like to equip themselves with intensive accounting education and prepare for a career in the accounting field. The Part One curriculum is equivalent to our Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Accountancy (PDPA) Program (http://www.bschool.cuhk.edu.hk/index.php/programs/postgraduate-diploma-in-professional-accountancy/program-overview), which is accredited by the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA) as a conversion program under its Qualification Program (QP). - Internship Program
Internship placements are offered to outstanding students, which provide a good opportunity to gain international exposure and practical working experience in well established accounting firms located in Hong Kong and mainland China.

- Study Tour
Overseas study tour is organized to broaden students’ horizons through company visits and interactions with professionals and local students from the overseas University. Last year, our students gained a rewarding learning experience in Taiwan.

- Career Workshop
A range of recruitment talks and career workshops are organized by The Career Planning and Development Centre and the MAcc program to provide students with comprehensive job market information and to equip students with essential skills in interviews, business etiquette etc.

- Language Workshop
All kinds of language workshops is organized by The Independent Learning Centre (ILC) and the MAcc program to enhance students’ language proficiency. In addition, a Cantonese Workshop is arranged to help our non-local students adapt to Hong Kong.

Structure and Courses (2015/16)

Full-time classes are normally conducted at daytime during weekday. Part-time classes are normally conducted at daytime and evening during weekend and weekday respectively.

The MAcc curriculum for the full-time and part-time mode is the same. It is divided into two parts. Part One consists of six core courses that equip students fulfill the requirements of professional examinations, and Part Two consists of six elective courses that allow them to deepen their knowledge in several areas of accounting. Each course carries three credits and students are required to complete 12 courses (i.e. 36 units) for graduation.

Course and Unit Exemption

Graduates of the CUHK PDPA Program are exempted from Part One courses.* Accounting graduates of recognized universities or graduates of other postgraduate diploma programs in accounting may also receive exemption from these courses at the discretion of the Program Director and with approval from the Dean of Graduate School. In the Fall 2012 semester, as part of a multimedia class for the MSED Educational Technology Specialist program, Trevor Dugan, Class of 2014, developed an app called PuzzleTopple. The app was published a year later and is available on both iOS and Android.
