Modules

The programme is intensive. To achieve the qualification required to enter this profession, which is at Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) level, your programme is delivered over two years and you are expected to attend full time for 45 weeks of each year with approximately 50% of this time spent on clinical placement in local hospitals and GP practices.

Students with a PGDip Physician Associate Studies are eligible to sit the national examination to qualify as a physician associate; this programme prepares you to pass that examination.

You can also achieve a higher award of a Master's in Science (MSc) Physician Associate Studies. This would typically be over an additional 12 month period, where you would undertake a clinical, research-focused dissertation based on their practice as a qualified Physician Associate.

This is a fully integrated course, by this we mean that our teaching of the biomedical, clinical and pharmacological sciences is always framed around the application to the clinical practice of working as a physician associate. You will be taught by a range of healthcare professionals both in the classroom and on clinical practice, including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, and of course on clinical placements there are even further opportunities to work in an interprofessional environment. There are also numerous opportunities to work with patients, service users and carers who are involved in classroom teaching sessions.

The programme includes a variety of teaching, learning and assessment methods. It is learner-centred and uses enquiry-based learning, team based learning and problem based learning. Throughout the course we focus on outcomes (what you will be doing in future roles), using case-based and patient centred learning tasks and incorporating clinical placements from the beginning. We are focused on local healthcare needs, and have integrated public health and digital health technologies themes running throughout the course.

The number of Physician Associates is likely to grow as the NHS seeks solutions to the workload pressures on A&E Departments and GP Surgeries. In the Yorkshire region, we expect career prospects for Physician Associates to be good as the region is currently experiencing reduced GP and speciality trainee recruitment. Teaching and learning

Teaching is organised on a module-credit basis, with each module requiring approximately 36 hours of staff contact time and 200 hours of total student input in each 12-week semester.

The main theme of the teaching and learning aspect of this MSc is to encourage you to develop the necessary skills to understand and communicate advanced theoretical and research-based knowledge of nutrition to people who participate in sport and exercise. Learning methods reflect the wide variety of topics associated with applied sport and exercise nutrition and include lectures, directed reading, workshops, seminars, practical exercises, laboratory sessions and project work. The research project will be supervised on a one-to-one basis.

Student performance in each module is usually assessed by evaluation of the quality of written or design work, and verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include essays, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project case work, design and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, and practical exercises.

The NHS offers an increasing number of opportunities for students with specialist training in exercise nutrition to support GP referral schemes and other healthy living programmes. The growing awareness of health within society, coupled with misunderstandings about the relationships between physical activity, nutrition and health has led to an increasing demand for graduates who can deliver evidence-based solutions and advice at all levels. Research or teaching within further or higher education also provide potential career opportunities.

Graduates progress to a diverse range of careers including exercise and lifestyle consultants based within hospitals and private practice. Various graduates have secured full time and part time work with professional sports teams as well as the Institutes of Sport in the UK. The programme provides a unique and integrated review of the physiology and biology of the eye, covering molecular and developmental cell biology, complex genetics, immunology and behavioural neuroscience.

Degree information

The programme offers students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and expertise in ocular cell biology, genetics, visual neuroscience, development and immunology. Adult nurses provide care for people over the age of 18 and increasingly for older people with complex conditions. They may also care for people with a mental health, learning disability or children. Adult nurses work in a range of settings including A&E, critical care, medical and surgical wards, rehabilitation units, GP practices, healthcare centres, hospices and in people's own homes.

What will you study?

This stimulating programme combines theory and practice and requires significant private study.

Year one is dedicated to group theoretical study with one day of timetabled university study per week and one day of independent study.

Year two features 100 hours of practice placement which can be split between two settings. Practice placements may involve voluntary counselling agencies; counselling services in colleges, hospitals or workplaces or those attached to a GP surgery. You will need to find your own placements, with assistance from course tutors and will also need to access and fund appropriate supervision for this phase of your course.

Completion of year two is equivalent to a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy which will enable you to practice as a qualified counsellor, working with clients aged 16 and over, subject to BACP approval.

In year three independent study takes over as you embark on ethical, reliable and valid independent research for your 60 credit dissertation. Four days of timetabled sessions introduce this phase of the course and include research ethics and methodology.

During your studies you will also have to attend and fund a minimum of 12 hours of personal therapy.

In terms of learner support, students are taught together, encouraging a supportive peer approach. Module leaders offer academic support on individual units and small group skills tutorials are available.

Your university-based sessions will take place at the city centre campus - a vibrant location offering everything you could possibly need during your studies.
