The course provides a management-focused golf programme which develops awareness and ability in corporate management, equipping students with the skills and confidence necessary to manage others in the golf industry. More specifically, the course will develop students’ knowledge of international golf business through modules including: The Global Golf Industry, Strategic Management in Golf, Golf Consultancy Project, Golf Business and Innovation, and Contemporary Developments in Golf. Offering blended delivery via online sessions complimented with campus delivery at various junctures, the course is intellectually and academically stimulating whilst still being focused on the vocational needs of the golf industry.

The staff teaching on the MA are friendly and supportive, who combined have extensive experience working both academically and vocationally within the golf industry. The course produces well qualified postgraduates with the necessary skills to move up the job hierarchy in variety of international golf related careers. The course is suitable both for existing industry professionals and those with an appropriate undergraduate qualification who aspire to a career in golf management.

Year 1

Strategic Management in Golf

This module focuses on the key concepts of strategic planning, marketing and management within golf. Modern perspectives of environmental analysis, human resource management, elements of strategic decision making and leadership will be analysed and discussed in relation to how they apply with golfing organisations.

The Global Golf Industry

This module aims to critically analyse the global context of golf by examining a number of issues, including: the spread of golf in the Middle and Far East; the globalisation of the world golf tours; and the lives of professional golfers. In doing so, this module will enable students to critically examine the social, economic and environmental consequences of golf’s global rise and also includes a specific focus on the growing internationalisation of golf business practices.

Golf Consultancy Project

This module aims to provide students with the skills to undertake a process of environmental scanning and consultancy in a golf industry workplace. In doing so, students will carefully monitor an organisation’s internal and external environments, detect early signs of opportunities and threats, and build a plan to influence current and future developments. This module will give students a critical awareness of the wider issues affecting golf business in relation to a specific industry sector. Students will be encouraged to record and reflect on their own personal development during the module and thus promote the transferable skills required to succeed in the ever changing golf industry.

Year 2

Contemporary Developments in Golf

This module will provide students with the analytical skills to enable them to explore a number of contemporary issues that are relevant in the modern golf industry. Analysis will focus on issues such as: participation in golf in regards to race, gender, class and disability; drugs in golf; golf and the Olympics; golf and the mass media; the relationship between golf and health; the relationship between golf and social inclusion; and player management in golf.

Research Methodology and Design

This module provides students with the essential personal, organisational, management, theoretical and statistical skills needed to work at Postgraduate Level. It will explore research philosophies, research process and design and the process of questionnaire development and design. The module will develop skills in advanced data organisation, presentation, dissemination and problem solving.

Brand Awareness and Marketing Strategies

This module will develop contemporary marketing knowledge, skills and experiences in a range of golfing contexts and environments. This module will develop the students’ ability to identify, problem solve and deploy a range of golf marketing theories and practices in this rapidly developing area. Students will engage with a diverse range of marketing theory as related to the contemporary golf context. This will be complemented by developing a pragmatic understanding of the practical application of golf marketing strategies and tactics in the 21st century.

Year 3

Masters Dissertation

The dissertation is a triple module and allows students to design and conduct a substantial piece of independent, supervised research related to the field of study. Golf is a significant global sport played on diverse areas of land within both urbanised and rural landscapes. Golf course managers are in essence custodians of this land and therefore have a responsibility to manage these facilities for both the game of golf and the environment. Golf courses offer wide ranging economic, social and environmental opportunities when managed appropriately but face many challenges in the 21st century if they are to survive in a highly competitive social and recreational market place. Competing forms of leisure, economic factors and other constraints continue to impact on golf globally. Course managers have to be mindful of these factors, which directly impact on the resources needed to sustain surfaces and meet customer expectations.

This part-time MA Sustainable Golf Course Management, awarded from the University of Central Lancashire, is an innovative course which encompasses a multidisciplinary approach to contemporary golf course management. The course aims to develop students’ critical and analytical thinking to enable implementation of effective and efficient management practices. The MA will encourage debate and critical evaluation within an environment that develops holistic understanding of international issues.

Theoretical Perspectives of Sustainability

In this module you will develop your knowledge and understanding to define sustainability. This will be used to investigate the impact of practice on global resources and the environment. You will critically appraise economic, social and environmental issues in the context of golf course management.

Management of Performance and Quality

In order to successfully manage a golf course in a challenging economic climate you will need to understand customer expectations and demands. This module will develop an understanding of both objective and subjective quality criteria for golf courses to allow you to provide positive customer experiences.

Contemporary Agronomic Research and Development

Research into agronomy, technology and management is of critical importance if the industry is to continue to adapt to modern pressures and challenges worldwide. This module will explore the research path including laboratory to field trials and, ultimately, application into practice. Case studies will be explored where research and development has made or could make a significant impact to management practice.

Year 2

Resource Efficiency and Management

This module will assess the impact that resource management can have on the overall success of the business. Managing physical, financial and human resources efficiently will allow responsible use of finite resources whilst maximising quality output and minimising waste.

Golf Course Policy and Strategic Planning

Management practices can have a significant impact on both the landscape and the fundamental design of a golf course. Within this module you will review the importance of managing and planning structural and physical developments on a golf course through the implementation of a course policy document.

You develop strong technical, analytical, practical and professional skills, alongside specialist skills in biomechanics and performance analysis, physiology and nutrition, and strength and conditioning.

We designed this course to continue specialist studies at masters level for students who already possess a relevant first degree. You may also have an appropriate combination of other subject specific qualifications and relevant practical experience.

Our MSc Sports Coaching Science programme is carefully aligned to employer needs and aims to provide the knowledge, skills and experience to successfully pursue a career in the area of Sports Coaching Science.

The processes and theories underpinning sports coaching science will be explored, together with key practical competencies, all delivered in conjunction with an intensive work placement offering invaluable industry relevant experience.

This course is highly vocational in nature and beneficial to those either wishing to seek future employment in Sports Coaching Science, or, those currently employed within a professional club or organisation.

The advent of this course is in response to the marked growth in career opportunities available to sports coaching scientists across a range of sporting clubs and organisations. This is exemplified by the large number of job vacancies advertised on websites such as SportsCoachUK, UK Sport, BASES, County Sports Partnerships and LinkedIn.

**Candidates must hold at least a Level Two Governing Body of Sport coaching award; having currently (within the last 3 years) attended a Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop and hold current coaching insurance and a current DBS check.

We provide performance support for elite athletes and competitive teams. We consistently perform well against the elite of university sport. A high number of our performance teams compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) programme at the elite level.

Several teams are supported with high-level coaching, training facility support and sports science analysis. Numerous local and national sports clubs’ links with our student sports teams provide additional high-level playing opportunities.

What you will study

Core Modules:
- Research Project
This project aims to enable students to demonstrate the skills necessary to produce a scholarly, in-depth, empirical research study, resource, or report.

- Research Methods
This module will develop your ability to design and statistically analyse experimental, quasi-experimental and non-experimental quantitative studies. It will allow you to appreciate the strengths and limitations of the different quantitative and qualitative research designs used in coaching and sport, health and exercise science; and synthesize knowledge and competencies gained during taught modules to produce a scholarly, in-depth critical review and proposal for a research study.

- Effective Coaching
You will develop an advanced understanding of critical self-reflective skills through the use of video analysis, which includes identifying key coaching styles, behaviours and feedback techniques required in advanced coaching situations. In addition, you will develop an in depth understanding of the interdisciplinary approaches that contribute to the coaching process including your ability to recognise and develop current coaching practice and coaching philosophies.

- Professional Work Based Development
This modules provides an opportunity for students to observe and participate in work-based professional environments, including identifying a work problem for you to overcome, which will enhance your professional and vocational learning and inform your own everyday practice. As part of your studies you will critically reflect on your learning throughout the work placement. You will, together with the module team, identify an organisation or organisations that are relevant to your field of study and that will be able to provide 140 hours of work experience.

Option Modules (choose three):
- Developing Expertise in Sport
This module aims to enable you to develop a systematic knowledge and critical understanding of how coaches develop and maintain expertise in sport and the ability to critically appraise coaching practice in the context of current approaches to skill development

- High Performance Environment
This module focuses on developing a multi-disciplinary perspective of factors that act upon the elite athlete and how these contribute to the development of elite performance. You will analyse how the coach, psychologist, conditioning coach, medical staff and nutritionist assist and complement each other in producing a high performance environment. The management of the performance environment will be discussed and the many issues that underpin successful implementation of elite sport science support will also be analysed.

- Strength and Conditioning
At the end of this module you will have developed your knowledge and critical understanding of concepts and theories regarding strength and conditioning. You will also have developed the ability to implement effective strength and conditioning programmes into a range of performance environments. The above have been closely linked to the professional standards required for accreditation by both the NSCA and the UKSCA.

- Movement Analysis
This module aims to develop your awareness of the analysis of sports performance, with particular emphasis on technique analysis and notation analysis. The use of systematic observation techniques in the analysis of sports performance will also be considered.

Learning and teaching methods

Teaching methods include lectures, video analysis, seminars and workshops, some of which will be student-led. Lectures will be held predominately held on a Monday between 2pm-8pm and /or a Tuesday depending on your module choice. A draft timetable can be requested from the course leader Melanie Tuckwell

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

The UK Vision for Coaching has clearly identified the need to develop Talent Coaches, Performance Coaches and High Performance Coaches. This course will provide opportunities for individuals to develop in these roles within their National Governing Body or sport.

Our MSc Sports Coaching and Performance degree is designed to reflect current developments and ensure that students have the required skills to access a range of employment opportunities within sports coaching and performance. Graduates will possess the key skills, knowledge and competencies that can be used in a wide range of careers, for example:

Assessment methods

Assessment activities include writing essays, producing oral and poster presentations and studying case studies and examinations.

Facilities

As part of your studies you will use our USW Sport Park facilities and state-of-the-art sport science laboratories on our Glyntaff campus.

Work and Study Placements

The MSc Sports Coaching and Performance degree has a bespoke module, Professional Work Based Development, which all students will undertake. Our course team establish opportunities for students across a spectrum of coaching, allowing them to experience vital skills in the potential career they wish to progress.

Current work placements include: Cardiff City Football Club; Cardiff Blues Rugby Football Club; Football Association of Wales; Welsh Rugby Union; Swansea City Football Club; Welsh Netball; Newport Gwent Dragons; Sports Wales; Golf Union of Wales; Welsh Hockey and many local authority Sports Development units and National Governing Bodies of Sport.
