Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments.

Teaching staff at the Business School are researchers and/or from an industry background with an in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Visiting speakers from business, industry, consultancies and research bodies provide further input.

Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed individually, generally on the quality of written or visual presentation work, and to some extent on verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include reports, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project work, visual and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, oral exams (viva) and practical exercises. The majority of assessments are based on individual assignments, but there is some assessed group work.

Specialist facilities

The Business School Postgraduate Centre has a state-of-the-art lecture theatre, well equipped seminar rooms and a postgraduate lounge and private study area.

The Wheatley Campus library provides specialist business resources including more than 1,000 sets of UK and overseas companies' annual reports, statistics on all aspects of business and management, postgraduate MA, MBA, MSc and PhD theses in business and management and examination papers.

Field trips

By listening to our students and recognising the need for practice-oriented business and management education, we have introduced new ways to engage with companies from the public and the non-profit sector. You will have the opportunity to visit various company sites organised through our extensive network of corporate contacts and the Chartered Management Institute. We also host a number of guest speakers throughout the year who bring their business and management experience and expertise to the classroom.

We also offer the International Business in Practice - Study Trip. The purpose of this Study Trip Module is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.

Field trips are optional and may incur a cost.

Course structure

The International Business and Economic Development MSc can be studied over one year full-time or two years part-time and is divided into two stages: eight taught modules (seven of which are compulsory) and a dissertation on either International Business or Economic Development.

All of our MSc programmes require some mathematical analysis, and we recognise that students have widely differing backgrounds in mathematics. The first week of all our MSc programmes includes compulsory intensive teaching in mathematics, refreshing and improving your skills in order to equip you with the techniques you will need for the rest of the programme.

Students who successfully pass the taught element of the programme, proceed to the dissertation stage, where you undertake a supervised project of your choice on a Business or Economic Development issue. Advice on choice of dissertation topic and management is given during the taught stage of the programme. The dissertation stage develops students’ research skills and follows on from the Research Methods module. Student dissertations are supervised by academic staff.

Assessment

Assessment is based on a combination of coursework assignments, projects, presentations, reports and written examinations (in May). The programme is completed by a research-based dissertation of 12,000 words on an approved topic between May and September.

It provides a solid foundation for a highly successful career by developing problem-solving and critical thinking abilities within the context of trading across national boundaries.
The MSc International Business offers a choice of pathways, allowing students to specialise in marketing or human resource management. This flexible format allows students to select a specialisation to suit career aspirations. An MSc International Business from Stirling is designed to develop deep understanding of different approaches to managing businesses across national boundaries and create awareness of new trading blocs and the pressures they inflict on businesses and managers. If you decide on a master’s consultancy project, rather than a dissertation, you’ll still undertake primary and desk research. Through your reading, reflection and research, you’ll be expected to show a deep understanding of the issues that are involved in the client brief.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE ENHANCE MY CAREER PROSPECTS?

The International Business MSc course is designed to build on the theory and knowledge taught during a student’s undergraduate studies along with their experiences. This continued development enables them to become specialists in international business, equipped to work in a range of different organisations. Graduates go on to pursue a wide range of business and management careers in multinational organisations, management consultancies, government organisations and management education and training.

WORK PLACEMENTS

As part of the International Business MSc degree, students have the option of enrolling on the internship programme. This module normally lasts between 8–12 weeks and provides students with an opportunity to undertake a workplace project on behalf of an organisation.

Coventry University Business School works closely with companies across the UK and Europe to offer a wide variety of internships.

Students must successfully meet the following assessment criteria:
-Academic: successful completion of all Semester 1 modules including research methods at the first attempt;
-CV short-listing: submit a CV which will be used for competitive short-listing by the internship panel;
-Presentation: prepare and successfully deliver a formal presentation;
-Interview: interview with the university internship panel.

After completing the Internship, you are required to write an extensive report based on the managerial and educational experience derived from the internship itself and present your findings to both the employers and academic staff.

Course detail

The MBA programme is built around your need to undertake a programme of development suited to becoming a leader and manager of the future and this involves you in developing a critical appreciation of the issues and complexity around the present and future business environment and the need for strategies of sustainability within the business and society. You will explore the key areas of operation in respect of its people, finance and the operations and information system as well as the opportunity to study the strategic aspects of management. The programme is underpinned by a 30 credit module in which you explore the contemporary issues for business and the value of business research to the understanding of these issues. All these aspects are delivered through engagement and application of the theories to real life practice and case studies as well as developing your own independent piece of business research.

A distinctive element of the MBA programme is the opportunity to gain professional accreditation from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) alongside the academic award. The CMI accreditation is optional and is subject to an additional fee to the awarding body, CMI.

Format

The MBA programme consists of core and option modules, plus a research project taught across three phases of learning. The option modules aim to develop your understanding of the management of innovation and creativity in a commercial context.

Most students will register for and complete the MBA programme. Others can choose to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration (60 credits) or a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration (120 credits). The programme can be taken either full-time (one year) or part-time (two - five years).

There will be two intakes each year in September and January.

WORK PLACEMENTS

As part of our MBA programmes students have the option of enrolling on the internship placement.

This module normally lasts between 8–12 weeks and provides students with an opportunity to undertake a workplace project on behalf of an organisation.

Students must successfully meet the following assessment criteria:
-Academic: successfully complete all Semester 1 modules including research methods at the first attempt;

-Interview: interview with the University internship panel.

This programme is designed for people who wish to develop a critical research-based knowledge and expertise of a broad range of key issues in international business and management at postgraduate level while also enabling a focus on specific areas of study according to personal interests or career requirements. The programme has 5 compulsory courses which provide core training in principles of international business and management and research methods. Three optional courses enable a focus on specific areas of international business study. The opportunity to tailor the programme to personal interests and career requirements of students extends to the dissertation which is undertaken on an international business topic. The dissertation also enables the application and further development of a broad range of research-based skills which is emphasised throughout the programme.

The programme facilitates the attainment of a broad range of subject-specific, intellectual, practical and personal and social learning outcomes. Students completing the programme have the knowledge, skills and competencies to analyse critical issues in international business with qualitative and quantitative methods, and to design and implement international business strategy and policy development. It is particularly relevant if you are, or would like to be, a manager with responsibility for international business and policy affairs in a private or public sector organisation.

Based in the School of Business, Economics and Informatics, the Department of Management is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in teaching, research and consultancy in the broad field of management. Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments.

Teaching staff at the Business School are researchers and/or from an industry background with an in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Visiting speakers from business, industry, consultancies and research bodies provide further input.

Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed individually, generally on the quality of written or visual presentation work, and to some extent on verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include reports, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project work, visual and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, oral exams (viva) and practical exercises. The majority of assessments are based on individual assignments, but there is some assessed group work.

Specialist facilities

The Business School Postgraduate Centre has a state-of-the-art lecture theatre, well equipped seminar rooms and a postgraduate lounge and private study area.
