Product and Service Innovation and Global Logistics

Examines the interconnection of an entrepreneurial mind-set and its role in the process of product and service innovation in a private, public or third sector. By critically appraising effective and responsible marketing solutions for sourcing and global logistics, students will develop a portfolio of how to take their innovation to market and realise its benefits internationally.

Developing Personal and Professional Competence

Enables students to identify, understand, develop and articulate their key personal abilities in the context of their future career aspirations. Students will be given the opportunity to undertake an internship, volunteer, study abroad or take part in desk based consultancy. Students will be invited to apply the concepts of personal and professional development to what they are experiencing outside the classroom in order to be better prepared for their personal and professional life.

Consumer-Led Sustainable Marketing

Delivers a critical, in-depth understanding of consumer-led sustainable marketing practices. Students are introduced to the concept of customer insight and its role in marketing decision-making. The module evaluates the psychological, social and economic roots of the discipline of consumer behaviour and relates these to contemporary consumers.

Global Branding and Integrated Marketing Communications

Provides students with a critical understanding of how a brand may be marketed via digital communications and placed within the global marketplace. Various sectors including fashion, luxury, travel, entertainment and technology are explored while providing students with an in depth understanding of branding theory.

Research Project: Design and Methods

What you'll study

You’ll study for either qualification in three parts, each worth 60 points.

Part 1

In Part 1 you'll study four courses and gain the foundation knowledge you need for Part 2, where you'll focus on either Marketing or Management. Your study during Part 1 will help you confirm your choice about which degree you go on to complete.

If you successfully complete Part 1, but don't continue your studies, you'll be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Global Business (PGCertGBus).

Part 2

In your second trimester you'll complete the set courses for your chosen degree.

Management students will study innovation and value creation, sustainability, supply chains, and leadership in a changing global environment.

Marketing students will focus on market analysis, consumer behaviour, communications, and current marketing theory and practice in a global context.

Part 3

In Part 3 you'll complete courses in strategy in a global marketplace, and effective management across cultures. In this trimester you'll also complete a 30-point practical project. You can choose to do a consultancy project, where you'll be partnered with an organisation and use theory to resolve a business issue. Or you can complete a research project where you'll investigate a theoretical aspect of a current topic under debate in management or marketing.

If you are enrolled in either Master's but don't manage to complete it, you may have enough points to be a awarded a PGCertGBus.

Duration and workload

The Masters' degrees can be completed in three trimesters or 12 months of full-time study.

Your workload will be 150 hours per course so you can expect to study 40–45 hours a week for much of the year.

Schedule

One year, full time over three trimesters.

In addition to attending lectures and seminars (around 10-12 hours a week) you will be expected to spend significant time (25 or more hours a week) engaged in preparing for classes and additional self-directed study as well as participating in the support programme.

Assessments

An innovative range of individual and group based assessments are used involving the preparation of essays, marketing plans, case study analyses, portfolios and presentations as well as the dissertation.

Facilities and Special Features

Throughout the course you are taught by experienced academic staff with specialist knowledge of their subject areas. Taught modules are delivered using a combination of lecture and seminar sessions, with a strong emphasis on participation and discussion. To bring concepts and theories to life, extensive use is made of real world case-studies and practical exercises supplemented by extensive on-line learning materials

To integrate these modules and enrich the experience of the student there is a supporting programme of workshop activities and events. Typically these include a Summer School as well as guest speakers, marketing games, study trips and learning skills development sessions throughout the year.

Summer School

In July 2015, students studying on the course benefitted from a week-long Summer School that provided the opportunity to have marketing concepts brought to life through study trips, visiting speakers and participating in a Marketing Challenge based on Northampton’s leather heritage.

The students were able to find out how leather products are produced with a tour of the tannery at the University’s Institute for Creative Leather Technologies. Professor Mike Redwood spoke on the way luxury leather brands market themselves and the particular issues they face in developing markets.

Successful completion of this course will prepare you for a career in international marketing with the potential to achieve success as a senior marketing manager with a multi-national organisation. Course structure

Our Master's degree has been especially created to enable graduates and professionally qualified managers to gain a greater understanding of the latest knowledge and practices in strategic marketing.

Graduates of this programme are currently working as consultants and as marketing and marketing communications managers for companies such as PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Co-op Group, Italian automotive technology manufacturer Magneti Marelli and Norwegian food products manufacturer Mills DA, as well as various private companies, non-profits and government organisations around the world.

We have developed strong relations with companies in the financial centres in London, including in the City, Canary Wharf, and Fenchurch Street. This offers you networking, mentoring and internship opportunities, making it a perfect location to develop your career. 

You can also reach out to top employers through our dedicated Business School Employability Office (BSEO). Our team focuses on developing your employment skills through CV support, interview skills workshops and guidance through mentors to progress in the industry. This includes the opportunity to network with employers and recruiters at career fairs. Extracurricular activities

The student Marketing Society has over 100 members. The Society combines a mixture of academic and social activities. It's a great chance to hear about the industry from experts, previous speakers include IBM and Mediacom and an opportunity to create business contacts.

Our marketing students achieved first place in the latest national marketing competition organised by the Institute of Direct Marketing.

You will develop your employability and enhance your CV from day one, with a focus on the skills that employers want within this dynamic industry. Modules in social media marketing, campaign planning, customer insight and global marketing will prepare you for a number of digital marketing opportunities on graduation.

This degree route provides a critical appreciation of the elements which digital marketing strategies cover, including web site development and analytics, consumer behaviour, social media marketing, digital campaign planning and branding within the global marketing context.

You will be introduced to current and relevant examples of digital marketing and be given the opportunity to develop digital marketing plans for a range of companies and situations.

Contemporary issues in digital marketing will be discussed and used in class groups to develop your understanding of the opportunities and multi-channel management decisions facing marketers.

Using this knowledge, allied to the use of models and tools, will prepare you for employment in areas such as, campaign management, paid search advertising, social media marketing and other digital marketing roles.

At Bognor Regis campus there is an integrated approach to the provision of learning resources and support. 

We offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research.

A range of study areas for group and quiet study including Wi-Fi areas for laptop use are available, or you can use our open access PC and Mac areas. 

We use an electronic learning environment with an expanding portfolio of online library resources from anywhere at any time. 

There are also purpose built classrooms for the teacher training courses, as well as lecture and seminar rooms. 

Our award winning Learning Resource Centre is at the heart of the campus. It hosts a modern library service with areas for quiet and silent study on both floors.

This course recognises this industry shift and explores the drivers and dynamics of modern corporate communications and its relationship with marketing and public relations. You focus on stakeholder management, global marketing, brand management, reputation management, media relations and social media.

Course content

The course provides you with an essential foundation in communications theory, marketing strategy and public relations practice.

You’ll explore the history and theory of corporate communications, connecting communications to overall corporate strategy. Alongside this, you’ll study the latest thinking in important areas of marketing such as international marketing, marketing strategy and marketing research, as well as understanding how organisations manage their brands and identities, marketing communications and key priorities such as sustainability.

During the Public Relations in Practice module, you’ll work alongside classmates in interactive workshops that focus on the practical applications of some key PR tools and techniques. You’ll cover essential skills such as campaign planning, personal communication skills, influencing techniques and writing for PR.

In addition, you’ll choose from a selection of optional modules that allow you to focus on a topic that matches your interests and career plans.

In the final semester you will apply your skills and knowledge to either a research dissertation or a practical consultancy project. Our consultancy projects give you the opportunity to work with a live business situation, make links with industry and gain work experience that can be exceptionally rewarding.

The one-year course has been designed in line with the requirements of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing and its content reflects the very latest developments in the field, including location-based marketing, user experience, customer journey mapping and mobile marketing.

It focuses on the knowledge and skills you’ll need to be successful in modern marketing and you’ll build a portfolio of materials to present to future employers including created web content, video content, profile infographics, customer journey maps, campaign proposals and analytics.

Given the ever-changing nature of the digital marketing field, you will be encouraged to innovate and apply emerging technologies to solve business problems.

You’ll also be required to submit a 15,000 word, subject-specific dissertation where you’ll explore a digital theme in depth, applying research skills and methodologies that will be covered as part of your dissertation preparation.
