City’s MSc in Health Policy gives you the knowledge and tools you need to understand, analyse and influence the health policy process, and to operate within an increasingly complex policy environment.

You will analyse the social, political and economic factors that affect policy at a local, national and international level. You will explore how and where policy is made, and who the key players are; and learn how to present your ideas clearly and persuasively to a range of influential stakeholders to bring about change.

Placements

You have the opportunity to do a placement, but it is not a formal requirement of the course. We encourage you to create your own. One recent student worked within the refugee camp in Calais alongside the NGO Doctors of the World as part of her dissertation research on refugee access to health care.

English Language Requirements

You will meet the English language requirement if you have passed, within the past three years:

- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English when a minimum overall score of B or 190 is achieved;

- (IELTS) International English Language Testing System when an overall score of at least 7.0 is achieved with a minimum of 7.0 in the Written sub-test and a minimum of 5.5 in Listening, Reading and Speaking; or

- Pearson Test of English (Academic) overall score of 68 or above, with a minimum of 68 in Writing and a minimum of 59 in Listening, Reading and Speaking

Course objectives

Students will develop:

Method of assessment

All distance learning modules are assessed by means of a two-hour unseen written examination (with 15 minutes planning/reading time at the start of the examination).

Modules EPM3, IDM2, IDM3, IDM5 and PHM2 modules - are assessed partly by the two-hour unseen written examination (70%) and partly by an assessed assignment (30%), submitted electronically to the School by a set deadline.

Examinations take place once a year in June (please note: it is not possible to hold examinations at other times of year). These are normally held in a student’s country of residence. Details of available examination centres.

They are arranged mainly through Ministries of Education or the British Council. Students taking distance learning examinations will need to pay a fee to their local examination centre. Please note that if you fail an examination at the first entry you will be allowed one further attempt, if you have failed the module overall.

Study materials

You receive your study materials after you register. Study materials may include Subject guides, Readers, Textbooks, CD-ROMs/additional computer software (e.g. Stata), Past examination papers and Examiners’ reports, and Handbooks. You also have access to the School’s online library resources. We also provide all students with a student registration card.

Flexible study

We know that if you have a full-time job, family or other commitments, and wish to study at a distance, you will have many calls on your time. The course allows you to study independently, at a time and pace that suits you (subject to some course-specific deadlines) using the comprehensive study materials provided, with support available from academic staff.You have between 1-5 years in which to complete the Postgraduate Certificate, and between 2-5 years in which to complete the Postgraduate Diploma or the MSc.

The study year for most modules runs from the beginning of October through to the June exams, while two modules run from the beginning of January through to assignment submission at the end of August. Tutorial support is available throughout this time. Students carrying out projects are assigned personal supervisors to support their project work which is mostly carried out between June and the end of September in their final year.

Blended learning: taking modules in London

After successful completion of a minimum number of core modules, Postgraduate Diploma and MSc students may also be eligible for the 'blended learning option', which allows for the study of up to two modules only (from a restricted list) at the School in London during the Spring or Summer terms in place of distance learning modules. Please note that these options, and the dates when the modules are held at the School, are subject to change - full details will be sent to all distance learning students in July each year.

This masters in Migration, Culture and Global Health Policy focuses on public health and global health issues related to migrant communities across the globe. It addresses a factor of major importance for those involved in public health and health policy, namely the health of migrants. It considers the nature of migrant and diaspora communities and the ways that health within these communities is related to social, political, economic, and cultural factors. It assesses the important role that culture plays in determining health outcomes in migration by focusing on several ethnographies of migrant communities. It explores the range of health problems faced by migrant communities in host countries. Theoretical themes of relevance to migration and global health will be explored in detail by considering international case studies of mental health, maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and risk perception and lifestyle.

This exciting new course embraces the breadth and complexity of global health challenges facing resource limited contexts and equips candidates with the tools and awareness to contribute to innovative solutions. The course is embedded within the Oxford Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health [embedded link] and benefits from the Centre's reputation and expertise in Global Health research and practice.

The course aims to develop students':
• knowledge and understanding of the major global health problems in resource limited settings and their potential solutions;
• knowledge and skills in research techniques applied in the analysis of global health problems, including quantitative and qualitative research methods, health policy and systems research and public health, with opportunities for training in additional specialist fields;
• capacity to critically appraise evidence in global health;
• skills and practical experience in researching specific health problems.

Upon completion of the course, students will be equipped to continue to advance their knowledge, understanding and skills further in research or professional practice in the field of global health. Course Content:
In the first term, the course provides an introduction to the breadth of topics in, and methods applicable to global health. The second term offers options ranging from international development to vaccinology. The third term provides students with the unique opportunity to apply their skills and gain first hand experience in a global health project in a resource limited setting. Students will then produce a 10,000 word dissertation related to their third term project.

The first term will consist of core topics on research methods, an overview of some major global health challenges, and topics related to the research and practice of global health. Core modules include:
1. Paradigms and Tools for Global Health: This module will cover epidemiology, statistics, health economics, social science for health and health policy and systems analysis. Methodological paradigms in the health and social sciences will be introduced and basic tools provided for each. Upon completion of this module, students will be able to critically review published literature covering a wide range of global health topics and can opt to further their application skills through the third term placement project.
2. Challenges and Change in International Health: This module will cover some of the key health challenges found in resource limited contexts. Topics will include: water and sanitation; land use, population and migration; climate change; nutrition; vector borne diseases; vaccine preventable diseases; neglected tropical diseases; maternal and child health; non-communicable diseases; accidents and injuries. Upon completion of this module, students will have a broad awareness of the kinds of factors affecting international health, their challenges, solutions that have worked and current efforts to affect change.
3. Global Health Research and Practice: This module highlights some of the important considerations in the research or practice of global health. Topics covered include global health governance, global health research ethics, challenges to research in global health, data management and governance, health impact evaluation, design of disease prevention and health promotion programmes, health programme evaluation, and outbreak investigation.

In the first term, there will be a series of problem-based learning sessions to integrate the core topics covered and allow students the opportunity to engage in more depth with real global health scenarios.

During the second term, in addition to some continued core content, students can select two of the following six options for further study:
1. Advanced Topics in Tropical Medicine: This option delves deeper into the range of infectious diseases affecting resource limited settings and provides a historical account of efforts to address them, the failures and successes, as well as current developments and advances.
2. Vaccinology: This exciting option is for those with an interest in the application of more basic science. The module will examine the science of vaccine development and the challenge of its application in real world contexts. The content will cover advances at the cutting edge of vaccine development.
3. Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health: This option addresses in more depth the persisting challenges faced by mothers, infants and young children in resource limited settings. Topics will engage with the current challenges, discuss viable solutions and address the obstacles to implementation.
4. International Development and Health: This option, offered jointly to MPhil students in Development Studies, aims to introduce students to the important linkages between processes of development (political and economic) and health. The module challenges conventional health thinking and compels a broader consideration of the inter-related factors affecting the health of populations.
5. Health, Environment and Development: This innovative option brings together students (and teachers) from Geography, Development and Global Health to engage with a series of cases illustrating the intersection between processes of development, environmental changes and human health.
6. Case Studies in Field Epidemiology: This option aims to familiarise students with the principles and practice of field epidemiology by lectures and discussions of outbreak investigation case studies.

The third term will involve a funded eight week placement with a global health project in a resource limited setting. Projects represent the range of subjects covered in the course. We have established a series of projects hosted by the Oxford Tropical Network in various geographic regions. Students, with advice from their departmental tutors, may choose from the placements available or propose their own placement (providing it meets course guidelines). The placement project will then form the basis of an independent 10,000 word dissertation to be submitted six weeks after return from placement.

The Global Mental Health academic programmes offered by the University of Glasgow are unique to Scotland and are the only online Global Mental Health Postgraduate courses offered anywhere in the world. Course content focuses on public health issues in low and middle income countries although you will also, of course, gain a valuable insight into public health issues in the UK and the rest of Europe.

The course will enhance your capacity to improve the health of the populations you serve and reduce health inequality. It will also develop your critical, analytical, research, collaborative working and evaluation skills - all key requirements in the dynamic public health sector.
The Centre for Public Health offers a flexible approach to learning with full and part time study options available. Many modules are stand-alone CPD courses, helping you to plan your education around your work and family life.

With an emphasis on guided independent learning, you can expect to attend University two days a week (full time) or one day a week (part time). You can, however, spread your learning over a longer period if you prefer.

Core Modules:

Intercultural Learning

Aims to introduce and enhance core learning skills within an intercultural environment. Learning to learn, study, read, write and reflect within a new environment can be challenging and particularly in a new country. Learning how to learn together, share ideas, develop key learning skills and support others are key facets of this module. The module is underpinned by thinking around the internationalisation of higher education.

International Health

Explores the idea of international health and human development. It examines both the determinants of health, and aspects of health system development. It evaluates a number of international strategies aimed at health for all and explores the role of primary health care in local level health improvement.

Global Health

Aims to examine the key processes of globalization and how they impact on the health of populations and their environments. Key public health risks are identified and their strategic response at the global level evaluated. Issues explored include: global disease, risk and surveillance; alcohol and tobacco control; globesity and non-communicable disease; HIV/AIDS; pollution and climate change.

Epidemiology

Examines the principles and tools of epidemiology and disease surveillance. These principles are then applied to an understanding of communicable and non-communicable diseases and assessment of health inequalities through tools such as health needs assessment and their role in protecting and improving population health.

Public Health: Policy and Practice

Introduces students to the concepts and underpinning theories associated with the public health approach and practices associated with the promotion and protection of population health. The module reviews historical as well as contemporary public health approaches, policies and strategies. There is a particular focus on examining health inequalities and measures to reduce them. The aim is to identify local, national and international strategic responses to both improving health and reducing health inequalities.

Research Methods

Encourages students to develop their skills as a potential producer of research, as well as their ability to systematically evaluate research outcomes from a variety of sources. In addition, students engage in a variety of data analysis techniques. The module covers quantitative, qualitative, mixed, creative and participatory methodologies.​

Option Modules:

Violence

Violence is now regarded as a critical public health concern. The impact of violence on the health of individuals, families and the wider society adds to an increasing burden of ill-health and cost to health and other welfare services. This module critically examines a range of key issues related to violence and health from international, national and local perspectives. It demonstrates the need for an interdisciplinary public health approach when addressing the causes of violence, building prevention control strategies, and promoting safety. Health Improvement

Encourages students to develop knowledge and competence in the area of health improvement. The module covers a number of core health improvement approaches: health promotion, prevention, health behaviour change and community participation. It considers the relevancy and value of these approaches to different population groups from a global perspective.

Health Protection

Examines the components and structure of health protection activity. The risks to public health from both communicable and non-infectious environmental hazards are explored in detail. The infrastructure of health emergency planning is critically analysed.

Systematic Review

This module provides a complete guide and hands on approach to developing a research question and learning the methods and key processes involved in completing a systematic review. Systematic review is a cross cutting methodology which can be used in a variety of disciplines and through interdisciplinary collaboration. The module can be taken by anybody from any discipline who wants to increase their skill set in the methodology. The focus will be on application of the systematic review methods to a chosen field of investigation.​

The appalling inequities in preventable mortality, disease, disability, and access to medical care between and within countries and global regions are a result of a complex mix of social, economic and political factors. Medical and health care advances are often extending the healthy lives of the wealthy few, yet millions fall ill or die for want of basic health and social facilities, often hampered by ineffective and non-responsive political and social systems.

From the World Health Organization, international NGOs, global pharmaceutical companies to the new generation of philanthropists and university research centres, the global health movement is growing. However, it is challenged by a variety of grass roots movements that start from different premises and advocate very different practices of intervention. Improving global health requires a new generation of individuals who can understand the many complex dimensions of health, healthcare, and global institutions and processes as well as who can carefully reason about the ethics of the problems, processes, proposed solutions and so forth.

- Course purpose -

The MSc in Global Health and Social Justice is ideal for anyone wishing to develop a rigorous understanding of the dynamic field of global health; it is suitable for health professionals, policy makers, philanthropists, those who work in governmental and non-governmental organizations, and potential PhD students and academics.

An additional requirement for the MSc Public Health (all streams) is some evidence of ability in mathematics, post-16 year education. Preference will also be given to applicants with relevant work experience.

Objectives

By the end of this stream, students should be able to demonstrate ability to apply knowledge of the core disciplines of public health, consisting of: statistics; epidemiology; health economics; and social research, to real health problems. In addition, they should be able to:

- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principal theories, methods and interventions used in health promotion

- understand the development of the discipline of health promotion in the UK and internationally

- assess the appropriate use of population-wide versus targeted health promotion interventions

- formulate health promotion policy and practice that is relevant to varying needs in diverse contexts

- be able to appraise and communicate research evidence

The MSc Global Health, Law and Governance programme will introduce students to some of the key international frameworks and instruments in global health. It will analyse the international organisations and legal instruments that influence national public health policies, and will critically examine the World Health Organization, the World Trade Organization and key international conventions and protocols. It will incorporate global governance and global health governance, helping set the frame for how governance interfaces with the making of laws (and also regulatory regimes and treaties) and their enforcement or implementation. Global pandemic surveillance and management, key issues around the control and ownership of viral material used for production of vaccines, and the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control are all examples of important issues in this field.

The Global Health, Law and Governance masters is part of a wider programme of study in international and global health. Underpinned by a commitment to the principles of social justice and fairness, these programmes will provide students with an understanding of the significance of the current global challenges for health care and public health, and will offer a multidisciplinary focus on global public health and primary care in a time of increasing health inequalities.

About the department

The School for Health was established within the University of Bath in 2003, to centralise the high profile research and teaching in the health-related disciplines already taking place throughout the university, so creating a single entity through which links with the health sector at national and international level can be channelled, co-ordinated and developed.

In 2010 the School joined the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and became the Department for Health, providing excellent opportunities for academic teaching and research collaborations with other departments, such as Psychology and Social & Policy Sciences. The Department's postgraduate teaching and research programmes now form part of the Faculty's new Graduate School, also launched in 2010, providing postgraduate students with dedicated support and a strong community in which to base their studies - whether on campus or by distance learning.

In keeping with government initiatives surrounding population health and more general public concerns, the Department divides its activities between two main pillars: Healthcare and Population Health – one focuses on the NHS, healthcare and health services research and the other focuses on population health, healthy living, sport & physical activity and tobacco control; each of these groups, in turn, contain both teaching programmes and research activities. Furthermore, there is a bridging spine between both pillars and which houses the Professional Doctorate in Health, Research in Health Practice and the administrative, finance, learning & teaching development, marketing and support activities of the Department.

- Population health

Historically, health policy has focused almost exclusively on sickness services provided by agencies such as the National Health Service. Although this focus on healthcare remains hugely important, it is increasingly complemented by aspirations to improve the health of the population by tackling the social determinants of health such as poverty and pollution and by encouraging people to adopt health promoting behaviours such as healthy diets and increased physical activity and to stop health damaging ones such as smoking. There is also growing national and international concern that improvements in health should be fairly distributed by reducing health inequalities. The Department for Health organises its work related to population health improvement in three main ways. Much the largest element in the population health portfolio is related to sport, health and exercise science, but the School attaches growing importance to tobacco control and health inequalities.

- Healthcare

The Department’s expertise in Healthcare focuses on innovation in the design, delivery, organization, and evaluation of healthcare interventions. We have a particular emphasis on disabling and distressing, long term or life-limiting conditions, such as chronic pain, stroke, dementia, rheumatic disease, and severe mental health problems. Current research activity involves collaborations with NHS colleagues in Bath at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases – RNHRD, the Royal United Hospital, the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Care Trust, the Pan Bath & Swindon Primary Care Research Consortium and RehabNET.

UCL is uniquely positioned to offer this new pathway, which combines teaching at both the UCL Institute of Child Health, with its strong links to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and the UCL Institute for Global Health.

Degree information

The Global Child Health pathway aims to provide an opportunity for medical graduates, and graduates from related fields, to study global issues in child health. Students build an awareness of current and future developments in paediatric medicine and global child health and gain the skills necessary to critically appraise practice and policy, and undertake independent research if the full MSc is taken.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of three core modules (45 credits), five optional modules (75 credits) and a dissertation/report (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, full-time nine months, flexible two to five years) is offered. A Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits, one year part-time, flexible one to two years) is offered.

Dissertation/report
All MSc students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words.

Teaching and learning
The programme combines lectures, seminars, tutorials and research project supervision. Assessment is through a combination of multiple choice questions and short answer question examinations, essays, posters, presentations, reflective portfolios, critical appraisal of literature and the dissertation, including an oral presentation.

Careers

The programme provides an ideal foundation for further professional development in paediatrics and related specialities in a global context. This is a new programme and the first cohort of students graduated in 2015. No information on graduate destinations is currently available.

Employability
This programme prepares students to be future leaders with high-level organisational and management skills together with the ability to incorporate research and evidence-based practice into health services for children.

The UCL Institute of Child Health pursues an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to enhance understanding, diagnosis, therapy and prevention of childhood diseases. Our research and our educational portfolio cover a broad range of paediatric issues, from molecular genetics to population health sciences. Our structure facilitates interdisciplinary work.

Much of our research and teaching is carried out on a joint basis with the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. Students benefit from excellent facilities in both laboratory and non-laboratory subjects.

The Global Child Health pathway focuses on child health in the global context and increasing understanding of health issues in the UK compared to other countries.

Why this programme

-You will be able to locate health and its determinants, and discuss the role of equality and inequality, category and location and their influence on health.
-You will examine health issues that arise for different population groups and across national boundaries, including social and cultural constructions of health, disability and chronic illness, and global and national health policies.
-You will make a critical analysis of health and its determinants and develop a deep understanding of the influence and role of equality/inequality, demographics and location on health.
-The University is a leading centre of applied and policy related research. This programme brings together expertise in inequalities in health, health and well-being, disability, drugs and addictions, urban health, health economics and the history of medicine.
-You will study quantitative and qualitative social science research methods, using at least one of these in the completion of an original piece of social research.
-You will be taught by experts from the following world-leading centres based at the University: the Institute for Health and Wellbeing, MRC Social & Public Health Sciences Unit, Strathclyde Centre for Disability Research, Centre for the History of Medicine, Policy Scotland and Centre for Public Policy for Regions.
-The degree is fully interdisciplinary in its structure and content, and is designed to allow you to focus your learning around the global health issues that interest you most.
