Degree information

The programme challenges students to understand the complex forces that shape health worldwide, by developing their understanding of the principles underlying research, policy and practice in global health, and their ability to critically evaluate the issues that are important for today's developing countries and common to the whole world.

MSc students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of four core UCL modules (60 credits), optional modules taken at UCL and partner trop-Ed institutions (60 credits), and the research dissertation completed at UCL (60 credits). All UCL taught modules are 15 credits. To gain the tropEd MSc you should take 15 credits (6 ECTS) of optional modules outside UCL in a partner tropEd institution.

The MSc in International Health and Tropical Medicine provides a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary foundation in global health. This exciting new course embraces the breadth and complexity of global health challenges facing resource limited contexts and equips candidates with the tools and awareness to contribute to innovative solutions. The course is embedded within the Oxford Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health [embedded link] and benefits from the Centre's reputation and expertise in Global Health research and practice.

The course aims to develop students':
• knowledge and understanding of the major global health problems in resource limited settings and their potential solutions;
• knowledge and skills in research techniques applied in the analysis of global health problems, including quantitative and qualitative research methods, health policy and systems research and public health, with opportunities for training in additional specialist fields;
• capacity to critically appraise evidence in global health;
• skills and practical experience in researching specific health problems.

Upon completion of the course, students will be equipped to continue to advance their knowledge, understanding and skills further in research or professional practice in the field of global health. In the future we anticipate our graduates will assume leadership and research positions within major international health organisations and ministries of health.

Course Content:
In the first term, the course provides an introduction to the breadth of topics in, and methods applicable to global health. The second term offers options ranging from international development to vaccinology. The third term provides students with the unique opportunity to apply their skills and gain first hand experience in a global health project in a resource limited setting. Students will then produce a 10,000 word dissertation related to their third term project.

The first term will consist of core topics on research methods, an overview of some major global health challenges, and topics related to the research and practice of global health. Core modules include:
1. Paradigms and Tools for Global Health: This module will cover epidemiology, statistics, health economics, social science for health and health policy and systems analysis. Methodological paradigms in the health and social sciences will be introduced and basic tools provided for each. Upon completion of this module, students will be able to critically review published literature covering a wide range of global health topics and can opt to further their application skills through the third term placement project.
2. Challenges and Change in International Health: This module will cover some of the key health challenges found in resource limited contexts. Topics will include: water and sanitation; land use, population and migration; climate change; nutrition; vector borne diseases; vaccine preventable diseases; neglected tropical diseases; maternal and child health; non-communicable diseases; accidents and injuries. Upon completion of this module, students will have a broad awareness of the kinds of factors affecting international health, their challenges, solutions that have worked and current efforts to affect change.
3. Global Health Research and Practice: This module highlights some of the important considerations in the research or practice of global health. Topics covered include global health governance, global health research ethics, challenges to research in global health, data management and governance, health impact evaluation, design of disease prevention and health promotion programmes, health programme evaluation, and outbreak investigation.

In the first term, there will be a series of problem-based learning sessions to integrate the core topics covered and allow students the opportunity to engage in more depth with real global health scenarios.

During the second term, in addition to some continued core content, students can select two of the following six options for further study:
1. Advanced Topics in Tropical Medicine: This option delves deeper into the range of infectious diseases affecting resource limited settings and provides a historical account of efforts to address them, the failures and successes, as well as current developments and advances.
2. Vaccinology: This exciting option is for those with an interest in the application of more basic science. The module will examine the science of vaccine development and the challenge of its application in real world contexts. The content will cover advances at the cutting edge of vaccine development.
3. Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health: This option addresses in more depth the persisting challenges faced by mothers, infants and young children in resource limited settings. Topics will engage with the current challenges, discuss viable solutions and address the obstacles to implementation.
4. International Development and Health: This option, offered jointly to MPhil students in Development Studies, aims to introduce students to the important linkages between processes of development (political and economic) and health. The module challenges conventional health thinking and compels a broader consideration of the inter-related factors affecting the health of populations.
5. Health, Environment and Development: This innovative option brings together students (and teachers) from Geography, Development and Global Health to engage with a series of cases illustrating the intersection between processes of development, environmental changes and human health.
6. Case Studies in Field Epidemiology: This option aims to familiarise students with the principles and practice of field epidemiology by lectures and discussions of outbreak investigation case studies.

The third term will involve a funded eight week placement with a global health project in a resource limited setting. Projects represent the range of subjects covered in the course. We have established a series of projects hosted by the Oxford Tropical Network in various geographic regions. Students, with advice from their departmental tutors, may choose from the placements available or propose their own placement (providing it meets course guidelines). The placement project will then form the basis of an independent 10,000 word dissertation to be submitted six weeks after return from placement.

The appalling inequities in preventable mortality, disease, disability, and access to medical care between and within countries and global regions are a result of a complex mix of social, economic and political factors. Medical and health care advances are often extending the healthy lives of the wealthy few, yet millions fall ill or die for want of basic health and social facilities, often hampered by ineffective and non-responsive political and social systems.

From the World Health Organization, international NGOs, global pharmaceutical companies to the new generation of philanthropists and university research centres, the global health movement is growing. However, it is challenged by a variety of grass roots movements that start from different premises and advocate very different practices of intervention. Improving global health requires a new generation of individuals who can understand the many complex dimensions of health, healthcare, and global institutions and processes as well as who can carefully reason about the ethics of the problems, processes, proposed solutions and so forth.

- Course purpose -

The MSc in Global Health and Social Justice is ideal for anyone wishing to develop a rigorous understanding of the dynamic field of global health; it is suitable for health professionals, policy makers, philanthropists, those who work in governmental and non-governmental organizations, and potential PhD students and academics.

2. The range of social science topics which influence global health (including political, historical, anthropological understandings). Students will become familiar with the methodological and normative underpinnings of these disciplines.

3. The analytical and policy literature concerning the related issues of global health, including economics, governance structures and institutions, the role and perspectives of the state, multilateral and bilateral agencies, international and domestic NGOs and other civil institutions.

4. An understanding of local approaches to global health, including an awareness of the problems and critiques associated with `bottom up' approaches.

The MSc Global Health, Law and Governance programme will introduce students to some of the key international frameworks and instruments in global health. It will analyse the international organisations and legal instruments that influence national public health policies, and will critically examine the World Health Organization, the World Trade Organization and key international conventions and protocols. It will incorporate global governance and global health governance, helping set the frame for how governance interfaces with the making of laws (and also regulatory regimes and treaties) and their enforcement or implementation. Global pandemic surveillance and management, key issues around the control and ownership of viral material used for production of vaccines, and the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control are all examples of important issues in this field.

The Global Health, Law and Governance masters is part of a wider programme of study in international and global health. Economies, environments, societies and cultures are increasingly heterogeneous, but also interconnected and interdependent. Thus, many complex factors and processes simultaneously operating from the local to the global spheres affect the health of individuals, populations and nations. As these factors change, so do the challenges and opportunities for improving health locally and globally.

The global health programme at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Global Health Research develops students’ understanding of the complex determinants of health and their potential solutions in order to help them contribute to the improvement of health and the achievement of health equity and social justice worldwide. With this purpose, this programme offers an inter-multi and cross-disciplinary approach to health and ill-health. Career Opportunities

Graduates of this programme will have the skills to work as global health practitioners, policy makers, consultants or researchers within international health and development agencies.

Previous graduates have gone into a range of careers, including working for national and international NGOs and Public Health England (PHE). These courses provide students with an in-depth understanding of the planning and delivery of policy responses to global health concerns and issues. They focus on approaches to effective policy-making which contributes to the protection and promotion of population health in a globalising world, at both national and transnational levels.

These are the world's first Master's level courses on global health policy by distance learning. They are aimed at students and professionals from both health and non-health backgrounds who seek to understand more about the policy environment associated with issues of global health. They will be of value especially to those seeking to assume positions related to issues of global health policy in national, regional or global health organisations, health-related research institutions, non-governmental organisations and private consultancies.

English Language Requirements

You will meet the English language requirement if you have passed, within the past three years:

- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English when a minimum overall score of B or 190 is achieved;

- (IELTS) International English Language Testing System when an overall score of at least 7.0 is achieved with a minimum of 7.0 in the Written sub-test and a minimum of 5.5 in Listening, Reading and Speaking; or

- Pearson Test of English (Academic) overall score of 68 or above, with a minimum of 68 in Writing and a minimum of 59 in Listening, Reading and Speaking

- (TOEFL) iBT Test of English as a Foreign Language overall score of 100 or above with at least 24 in Writing, 23 in Speaking, 22 in Reading and 21 in Listening

Course objectives

Students will develop:

- a solid grounding in various theories and practices concerned with global health policy

- an understanding of the emerging institutional structures and governance mechanisms to address global health issues

- a good appreciation of relevant health policy research methods, such as comparative analysis and cross country learning

- an ability to apply these analytical and methodological skills to address the multifaceted challenges posed by global health issues

Method of assessment

All distance learning modules are assessed by means of a two-hour unseen written examination (with 15 minutes planning/reading time at the start of the examination).

Modules EPM3, IDM2, IDM3, IDM5 and PHM2 modules - are assessed partly by the two-hour unseen written examination (70%) and partly by an assessed assignment (30%), submitted electronically to the School by a set deadline.

Examinations take place once a year in June (please note: it is not possible to hold examinations at other times of year). These are normally held in a student’s country of residence. Details of available examination centres.

They are arranged mainly through Ministries of Education or the British Council. Students taking distance learning examinations will need to pay a fee to their local examination centre. Please note that if you fail an examination at the first entry you will be allowed one further attempt, if you have failed the module overall.

Study materials

You receive your study materials after you register. Study materials may include Subject guides, Readers, Textbooks, CD-ROMs/additional computer software (e.g. Stata), Past examination papers and Examiners’ reports, and Handbooks. You also have access to the School’s online library resources. We also provide all students with a student registration card.

Flexible study

We know that if you have a full-time job, family or other commitments, and wish to study at a distance, you will have many calls on your time. The course allows you to study independently, at a time and pace that suits you (subject to some course-specific deadlines) using the comprehensive study materials provided, with support available from academic staff.You have between 1-5 years in which to complete the Postgraduate Certificate, and between 2-5 years in which to complete the Postgraduate Diploma or the MSc.

The study year for most modules runs from the beginning of October through to the June exams, while two modules run from the beginning of January through to assignment submission at the end of August. Tutorial support is available throughout this time. Students carrying out projects are assigned personal supervisors to support their project work which is mostly carried out between June and the end of September in their final year.

Blended learning: taking modules in London

After successful completion of a minimum number of core modules, Postgraduate Diploma and MSc students may also be eligible for the 'blended learning option', which allows for the study of up to two modules only (from a restricted list) at the School in London during the Spring or Summer terms in place of distance learning modules. Please note that these options, and the dates when the modules are held at the School, are subject to change - full details will be sent to all distance learning students in July each year.

The programme takes an innovative approach to teaching global health by providing an interdisciplinary foundation in health and social sciences before giving students the opportunity to specialise in one of four settings:

- Global Surgery
- Health Professions Education
- Disasters & Adaptation
- Conflict & Security

This applied approach will enable students to consider theoretical and ethical debates, and assess their relevance for the realities of fieldwork using case studies.

Drawing on the Centre’s experience in programmatic work, students will have the opportunity to learn from experts in the field, and share their own knowledge and experiences of working in health care, development and humanitarian settings.

Using a wide range of approaches from interactive classroom teaching, to observation in health care settings, film as a medium to stimulate debate, interaction with our partnerships in low and middle income countries and an opportunity to deliver important research outcomes, it provides a stimulating and engaging approach to this subject.

- Course purpose -

This programme will provide critical training for those pursuing careers in health care delivery, humanitarian relief, public health, policy making, advocacy and research. It will be particularly useful for those who already have experience in health or programmatic work, but who are keen to develop their academic skills and gain a global perspective on health and healthcare.

- Course format and assessment -

The programme consists of 180 credits: 80 credits of taught core modules; 40 credits of pathway modules and a 60-credit dissertation. Modules are asssessed by a combination of essays, presentations and exams.

We live in a world of remarkable health challenges: from emerging infections and non-communicable diseases to weak health systems and uneven access to medicines. In meeting these challenges, it is abundantly clear that improving global health requires a critical understanding of the complex interplay between health, politics and social and spatial inequalities in wealth and power. In this new programme, students explore the contested terrain of global health politics in theory and practice. Combining advanced geographical analysis of pressing global health concerns with jointly-taught modules from experts in the Global Health Unit, at the QMUL Centre for Primary Care and Public Health, this degree equips a new generation of critical scholars to tackle the moral, ethical and political challenges of global health today.

This programme:
- provides you with a detailed understanding of global health debates, agendas, politics and practices in a variety of geographical and historical contexts
- encourages you to examine pressing global health challenges in light of the significant conceptual, methodological and empirical contributions of critical geographical scholarship

This course is for individuals working, or planning to work, in developing and transitional countries or applicants with experience in NGOs or other relevant experience. It will equip you to work effectively at a senior level to promote the health and social wellbeing of populations in low, middle income and transitional countries through the development of effective and responsive health systems. Participants are typically drawn from health ministries and the NGO sector.

Our MSc in Global Health allows you to adopt specialised pathways focusing on health systems, human resources for health or humanitarian emergencies/post-conflict recovery.

Global health is a multidisciplinary field of study that takes a global perspective on the state of people’s health, and enhances knowledge and implementation of effective intervention strategies through a systematic examination of health problems, their determinants, and their solutions around the world. It examines the drivers of global health policy and determinants of health in disadvantaged populations.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Teaching is comprised of a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies, simulation exercises and projects. Assessment is continuous and incorporates assignments, action plans, projects and examinations. For their dissertation projects, students can chose to collect desk-based studies or conduct primary data collection in collaboration with national or international organisations working in health and development

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module which you study on-campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Your attendance requirements at QMU will depend on which module you are studying and whether you are studying full or part time. Modules usually require two sessions of three hours in class plus around 10-12 hours of work each week consisting of preparatory class work with colleagues and on web based learning platforms as well as independent study. Subsequent to class contact, 3 weeks are given to prepare the written assignment.

It takes between 12 and 36 months to complete the certificate.

Postgraduate Professional Development

The courses we offer reflect the range of research and teaching interests of our academic staff and promote discussion of significant issues relating to Global Health - whether human, animal or environmental.

These are credit bearing courses which run for either 5 or 11 weeks at a time; and upon completion can lead to a University of Edinburgh postgraduate award of academic credit.

You may take a maximum of 50 credits worth of courses through our Postgraduate Professional Development scheme. These credits will be recognised in their own right at postgraduate level, or may be put towards gaining a higher award, such as a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MSc.
