Degree information

The programme challenges students to understand the complex forces that shape health worldwide, by developing their understanding of the principles underlying research, policy and practice in global health, and their ability to critically evaluate the issues that are important for today's developing countries and common to the whole world.

MSc students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of four core UCL modules (60 credits), optional modules taken at UCL and partner trop-Ed institutions (60 credits), and the research dissertation completed at UCL (60 credits). All UCL taught modules are 15 credits. To gain the tropEd MSc you should take 15 credits (6 ECTS) of optional modules outside UCL in a partner tropEd institution.

Dissertation/report
All MSc students undertake an individual research project on a topic relevant to future work in global health and development which includes a presentation and culminates in a dissertation of 7,000 words.

Teaching and learning
The programme is taught with an emphasis on collaborative and co-operative learning. This is to ensure that students enter the workforce capable of joining projects and programmes with a supportive network of peers. Assessment is through written assignments, unseen written examinations, projects, oral presentations, group work and the written dissertation.

The MSc in International Health and Tropical Medicine provides a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary foundation in global health. This exciting new course embraces the breadth and complexity of global health challenges facing resource limited contexts and equips candidates with the tools and awareness to contribute to innovative solutions. The course is embedded within the Oxford Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health [embedded link] and benefits from the Centre's reputation and expertise in Global Health research and practice.

The course aims to develop students':
• knowledge and understanding of the major global health problems in resource limited settings and their potential solutions;
• knowledge and skills in research techniques applied in the analysis of global health problems, including quantitative and qualitative research methods, health policy and systems research and public health, with opportunities for training in additional specialist fields;
• capacity to critically appraise evidence in global health;
• skills and practical experience in researching specific health problems.

Upon completion of the course, students will be equipped to continue to advance their knowledge, understanding and skills further in research or professional practice in the field of global health. In the future we anticipate our graduates will assume leadership and research positions within major international health organisations and ministries of health.

Course Content:
In the first term, the course provides an introduction to the breadth of topics in, and methods applicable to global health. The second term offers options ranging from international development to vaccinology. The third term provides students with the unique opportunity to apply their skills and gain first hand experience in a global health project in a resource limited setting. Students will then produce a 10,000 word dissertation related to their third term project.

The first term will consist of core topics on research methods, an overview of some major global health challenges, and topics related to the research and practice of global health. Core modules include:
1. Paradigms and Tools for Global Health: This module will cover epidemiology, statistics, health economics, social science for health and health policy and systems analysis. Methodological paradigms in the health and social sciences will be introduced and basic tools provided for each. Upon completion of this module, students will be able to critically review published literature covering a wide range of global health topics and can opt to further their application skills through the third term placement project.
2. Challenges and Change in International Health: This module will cover some of the key health challenges found in resource limited contexts. Topics will include: water and sanitation; land use, population and migration; climate change; nutrition; vector borne diseases; vaccine preventable diseases; neglected tropical diseases; maternal and child health; non-communicable diseases; accidents and injuries. Upon completion of this module, students will have a broad awareness of the kinds of factors affecting international health, their challenges, solutions that have worked and current efforts to affect change.
3. Global Health Research and Practice: This module highlights some of the important considerations in the research or practice of global health. Topics covered include global health governance, global health research ethics, challenges to research in global health, data management and governance, health impact evaluation, design of disease prevention and health promotion programmes, health programme evaluation, and outbreak investigation.

In the first term, there will be a series of problem-based learning sessions to integrate the core topics covered and allow students the opportunity to engage in more depth with real global health scenarios.

During the second term, in addition to some continued core content, students can select two of the following six options for further study:
1. Advanced Topics in Tropical Medicine: This option delves deeper into the range of infectious diseases affecting resource limited settings and provides a historical account of efforts to address them, the failures and successes, as well as current developments and advances.
2. Vaccinology: This exciting option is for those with an interest in the application of more basic science. The module will examine the science of vaccine development and the challenge of its application in real world contexts. The content will cover advances at the cutting edge of vaccine development.
3. Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health: This option addresses in more depth the persisting challenges faced by mothers, infants and young children in resource limited settings. Topics will engage with the current challenges, discuss viable solutions and address the obstacles to implementation.
4. International Development and Health: This option, offered jointly to MPhil students in Development Studies, aims to introduce students to the important linkages between processes of development (political and economic) and health. The module challenges conventional health thinking and compels a broader consideration of the inter-related factors affecting the health of populations.
5. Health, Environment and Development: This innovative option brings together students (and teachers) from Geography, Development and Global Health to engage with a series of cases illustrating the intersection between processes of development, environmental changes and human health.
6. Case Studies in Field Epidemiology: This option aims to familiarise students with the principles and practice of field epidemiology by lectures and discussions of outbreak investigation case studies.

The third term will involve a funded eight week placement with a global health project in a resource limited setting. Projects represent the range of subjects covered in the course. We have established a series of projects hosted by the Oxford Tropical Network in various geographic regions. Students, with advice from their departmental tutors, may choose from the placements available or propose their own placement (providing it meets course guidelines). The placement project will then form the basis of an independent 10,000 word dissertation to be submitted six weeks after return from placement.

The Global Health & Social Justice course will provide you with a demanding study pathway covering dynamic topics within global health. You will explore major issues and debates, as well as develop the capacity for critically assessing the scientific research and practices aiming to address global health inequalities. You with also cover the fundamental aspects relating to philosophical debates about social justice and health equity.

The course offers you flexibility with the choice to study either full or part-time. The health and wellbeing of people differs widely across the globe. Life expectancy varies from 45 years in some countries to double that figure in others, and similar inequalities exist within countries.

Economies, environments, societies and cultures are increasingly heterogeneous, but also interconnected and interdependent. Thus, many complex factors and processes simultaneously operating from the local to the global spheres affect the health of individuals, populations and nations. As these factors change, so do the challenges and opportunities for improving health locally and globally.

The global health programme at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Global Health Research develops students’ understanding of the complex determinants of health and their potential solutions in order to help them contribute to the improvement of health and the achievement of health equity and social justice worldwide. With this purpose, this programme offers an inter-multi and cross-disciplinary approach to health and ill-health.

The course brings together experts from the health sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, development studies, anthropology, business, economics and political sciences amongst others in order to deliver a stimulating and vibrant programme, covering topics such as poverty, inequality, cultural understandings of health and healing, emerging infectious diseases, global burden of diseases, climate change, health policy and governance, access to medicines, and the relationship between health inequality, globalisation and global governance.

DISSERTATION (RESEARCH PROJECT)

Our MSc in Global Health has a strong research component. After a compulsory Research Methods module, the dissertation or research project allows students to develop an area of expertise through in-depth focus on a topic of their particular interest. Students can gain first-hand research experience with one of our overseas partner institutions.
With the support of a research supervisor, students are expected to learn and work independently, access and critique information from a variety of sources, and competently design and report a research project. Students will be also required to obtain the necessary ethics approvals when needed.

BSMS offers a number of scholarships for students admitted to full-time Masters degree in Global Health at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Global Health Research.

The scholarships are funded by BSMS, and confirm the emergence of the Global Health department as a national and international leader in global health research, practice and PG study. The BSMS Global Health scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic and/or professional merit and financial need. The scholarship provides one £5,000 award or two £2,500 awards towards tuition fees.

The Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD) offers a range of awards through the Master’s Programme in Global Health and Development. These include the MSc Global Health, on which the majority of our students enroll, and provides the broadest range of choice. Our MSc Sexual and Reproductive Health, and MSc Social Development and Health, are our two more specialised awards reflecting focused pathways through the programme. Students should apply for the master’s award that best suits their career needs, but are able to revise their choice – subject to having studied appropriate modules – before progressing to the dissertation stage. MSc Global Health

Recent years have seen increased attention on the field of global health as a major driver of development, international co-operation and diplomacy. Global health is a multidisciplinary field of study that takes a global perspective on the state of people’s health, and enhances knowledge and implementation of effective intervention strategies through a systematic examination of health problems and their determinants.

This course is particularly suited to individuals working, or planning to work, in enhancing population health in middle or low-income countries, within governmental (eg Ministry of Health), non-governmental or intergovernmental organisations (eg WHO or UN agencies). It will equip you to work effectively at a senior level to promote the health and social wellbeing of populations through the development of effective and responsive health systems. It will orient you to issues in which staff at the Institute are recognised to have made world-leading research contributions, such as supporting health systems strengthening in fragile and confict-affected states, and mental health and psychosocial support for vulnerable populations. Participants are typically drawn from a broad range of backgrounds, including physicians, nurses, health ministries and the NGO sector.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Teaching is comprised of a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies, simulation exercises and projects. Assessment is continuous and incorporates assignments, action plans, projects and examinations. For their dissertation projects, students can chose to collect desk-based studies, or conduct primary data collection in collaboration with national or international organisations working in health and development.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module which you study on campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Your exact attendance requirements at QMU will depend on which module you are studying and whether you are studying full or part time. Modules typically run over five weeks and involve two sessions of three hours in class each week. In addition, for each module students spend around 10-12 hours of each week on preparatory class work independently and with colleagues, including readings and exercises available on dedicated web-based learning platforms.

Modules

Students study core modules totalling 60 credits addressing such subjects as Global Health and Social Policy; Researching Global Health and Development; Global Public Health; and Health Systems. A further 60 credits are then selected from the broad range of classes available within the Institute or from other QMU programmes recognised as of relevance. The former includes modules such as Qualitative Research Methods, Gender Health and Development, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Social Development Policy and Practice and a range of elective classes available subject to student demand. The latter includes modules related to leadership, research, advocacy and specialised fields of study such as nutrition and epidemiology.

For the MSc award you will then complete a dissertation on an approved topic related to global heath and development (60 credits).

Careers

As a graduate you will be well equipped for employment as a global health practitioner, senior health manager or policy maker working in, or advising regarding, a developing country or one in economic transition. Graduates have attained positions as: health programme manager; humanitarian co-ordinator; civil society programme manager; research and advocacy officer; donor agency health advisor and a variety of advanced positions within home ministries and educational institutions.

Tony is also Director of the UK International Emergency Trauma Register which aims to improve training and accountability of those who respond to large scale emergencies overseas.

Aims

On completion of the course students should be able to show a critical understanding of:

1. Key issues and debates related to the practices of global health programming. Students will show familiarity with different theoretical approaches, practical problems and an appreciation of the diversity of policies at international and national levels.

2. The range of social science topics which influence global health (including political, historical, anthropological understandings). Students will become familiar with the methodological and normative underpinnings of these disciplines.

3. The analytical and policy literature concerning the related issues of global health, including economics, governance structures and institutions, the role and perspectives of the state, multilateral and bilateral agencies, international and domestic NGOs and other civil institutions.

4. An understanding of local approaches to global health, including an awareness of the problems and critiques associated with `bottom up' approaches.

5. The development of a range of academic and professional/transferrable skills through both independent and group-based work

Teaching and learning

The programme will begin with an on-line induction session that explains how the course will progress and how students can fully engage with the curriculum and the online classroom environment. It will set out the key contacts and what each student can expect. Academic & pastoral support will be offered on-line with each student having a personal tutor who will be responsible for monitoring their progression through the programme. A dedicated programme administrator will be responsible for dealing with day to day enquiries.

The course lasts for 12 months in total with each of the 4 modules comprising 8 weeks of teaching followed by 1 week of assessment. Students will complete each module in turn before progressing to the next. The format is designed to be adaptable to the needs of professional students and provides opportunity for reflection between modules.

The programme has been designed to recreate a classroom learning environment in an online format. The Global Health MSc takes an innovative approach to teaching by providing an interdisciplinary foundation in health and social sciences before providing you with the opportunity to specialise in one of four advanced areas of study.

This applied approach will enable you to reflect on theoretical and ethical debates, and assess their relevance to the realities of fieldwork using case studies. The programme offers you flexibility with the choice to study either full or part-time. It is made up of optional and required modules totalling 180 credits, with 60 credits coming from a dissertation based on your specialised area of study.

Part-time students should plan to take their Specialist Pathway modules within one academic year, and should plan to complete the Research Methods module and dissertation within the other academic year, optional modules can be studies in either the first or second year.

Assessment

The primary method of assessment for this course is a combination of unseen written exams, group and individual presentations, group poster projects and coursework essays. The research project and dissertation will be assessed on an extended piece of writing.

The MSc Global Health, Law and Governance programme will introduce students to some of the key international frameworks and instruments in global health. It will analyse the international organisations and legal instruments that influence national public health policies, and will critically examine the World Health Organization, the World Trade Organization and key international conventions and protocols. It will incorporate global governance and global health governance, helping set the frame for how governance interfaces with the making of laws (and also regulatory regimes and treaties) and their enforcement or implementation. Your programme of study

If you are interested in patterns and social issues that affect public health on a global scale the programme will help you gain knowledge, understand theories and practices in global health and management studies looking at political effects, social effects, economic issues to understand the global health problems that surround us in the world. The discipline is well recognised at Aberdeen within the Institute of Applied Health Sciences and Business School. You develop a portfolio of work and an elective work placement to work with a health organisation in the UK or overseas. Previous students have worked in Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, the UK and Zimbabwe. You can go on to work in governing health policy, monitoring and evaluating technical assistance, advisory roles, and research.

English Language Requirements

You will meet the English language requirement if you have passed, within the past three years:

- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English when a minimum overall score of B or 190 is achieved;

- (IELTS) International English Language Testing System when an overall score of at least 7.0 is achieved with a minimum of 7.0 in the Written sub-test and a minimum of 5.5 in Listening, Reading and Speaking; or

Course objectives

Students will develop:

- a solid grounding in various theories and practices concerned with global health policy

- an understanding of the emerging institutional structures and governance mechanisms to address global health issues

- a good appreciation of relevant health policy research methods, such as comparative analysis and cross country learning

- an ability to apply these analytical and methodological skills to address the multifaceted challenges posed by global health issues

Method of assessment

All distance learning modules are assessed by means of a two-hour unseen written examination (with 15 minutes planning/reading time at the start of the examination).

Modules EPM3, IDM2, IDM3, IDM5 and PHM2 modules - are assessed partly by the two-hour unseen written examination (70%) and partly by an assessed assignment (30%), submitted electronically to the School by a set deadline.

Examinations take place once a year in June (please note: it is not possible to hold examinations at other times of year). These are normally held in a student’s country of residence. Details of available examination centres.

They are arranged mainly through Ministries of Education or the British Council. Students taking distance learning examinations will need to pay a fee to their local examination centre. Please note that if you fail an examination at the first entry you will be allowed one further attempt, if you have failed the module overall.

Study materials

You receive your study materials after you register. Study materials may include Subject guides, Readers, Textbooks, CD-ROMs/additional computer software (e.g. Stata), Past examination papers and Examiners’ reports, and Handbooks. You also have access to the School’s online library resources. We also provide all students with a student registration card.

Flexible study

We know that if you have a full-time job, family or other commitments, and wish to study at a distance, you will have many calls on your time. The course allows you to study independently, at a time and pace that suits you (subject to some course-specific deadlines) using the comprehensive study materials provided, with support available from academic staff.You have between 1-5 years in which to complete the Postgraduate Certificate, and between 2-5 years in which to complete the Postgraduate Diploma or the MSc.

The study year for most modules runs from the beginning of October through to the June exams, while two modules run from the beginning of January through to assignment submission at the end of August. Tutorial support is available throughout this time. Students carrying out projects are assigned personal supervisors to support their project work which is mostly carried out between June and the end of September in their final year.

Blended learning: taking modules in London

After successful completion of a minimum number of core modules, Postgraduate Diploma and MSc students may also be eligible for the 'blended learning option', which allows for the study of up to two modules only (from a restricted list) at the School in London during the Spring or Summer terms in place of distance learning modules. Please note that these options, and the dates when the modules are held at the School, are subject to change - full details will be sent to all distance learning students in July each year.
