Who is it for?

Wherever you are, energy has an implication. This course is for students who want to engage with different types of settings to research and establish the energy, environmental and technological implications that exist within them. Energy and Environmental Technology and Economics students will care for the environment as a sustainable system and ultimately have a desire to improve conditions for the wider population.

Students come from a range of backgrounds including engineering, finance and economics – and from within the energy industry itself.

Objectives

This Masters degree has been designed to give you a wide perspective when it comes to analysing and forecasting the future for energy, environmental technology and economics. We engage with the industry so you gain a real-world understanding of the problems that exist, and we consider our own ethical responsibilities in relation to energy use.

Imagine a Grade 1-listed building such as the Guildhall in London. As an energy consultant your task is to analyse the site to make it more efficient. But there is a caveat: you cannot make any structural changes to the walls or the windows. The MSc Energy and Environmental Technology and Economics course gives you the tools to examine and address these kinds of challenges.

The MSc Energy and Environmental Technology and Economics course is not about learning academic theories. Instead we focus on the breadth of the subject in the real world. By engaging with practising businesses and trade associations we identify a range of perspectives, and look at the influence of a myriad of other forces at play, from regulation and government funding, to behavioural psychology and emerging technologies. Here are some of the questions the course poses:
-Does this new form of technology operate as it should?
-How does the UK relate to other European countries when it comes to energy efficiency?
-How does organisational psychology affect energy use within a company?
-How do you decide which energy contract to choose?
-What is the impact of a consumer society on personal energy use?

Placements

There is no formal requirement to do an industry-based placement as part of the programme. However, some students arrange to undertake their dissertation research within a company or within their part of the world. A recent student investigated the future of coal-fired generation in Turkey, and another student is combining a work placement at The World Energy Council with their dissertation.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is organised into modules comprising four consecutive day courses taken at a rate of one a month or so. This format makes the programme accessible for students who want to study part time while working.

Full-time students are also welcome. Whether you choose to take the course as a part-time or full-time student, we will offer a great deal of support when it comes to helping you prepare for the modules and project work. You will be expected to devote a significant part of your non-taught hours to project work as well as private study.

Our course is led by an exceptional group of experts in energy, supply, demand management and policies. As an example, one of our module leaders leads the UK contribution to writing international energy management standards and informing policy through the European Sector Forum for Energy Management. This forum looks at methodologies across the continent. There is also input to global standards development through the International Standards Organisation (ISO). At City we bring on board people with well-established academic careers as well as leaders from the energy industry. The programme has strong links with industry and commerce and involves many visiting lecturers who hold senior positions in their fields.

The Energy and Environmental Technology and Economics MSc gives you the opportunity to consider the role of International Energy Management Standards. You will explore the opportunities these standards provide for global service users and providers in relation to reducing energy costs and the environmental impact of energy use.

You will discover the range of current European and International Standards, explore why they are needed and how they are developed, and examine the benefits they deliver through case studies.

The UK has had a leading role in developing these standards in terms of both their writing and implementation. For example the Energy Audit standard, which forms part of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive, Article 8, mandates audits for private sector, non-SME organisations. In the UK this has been implemented as the Energy Savings Opportunities Scheme (ESOS).

Modules

Each course module is taught over four consecutive days of teaching with one module each month. Alongside the teaching you will have coursework to complete for each module. The modules run from October to April, and in the remaining time, you will concentrate on your dissertation, which forms a significant part of the programme.

The dissertation gives you the opportunity to create your own questions and to decide on your own area of interest. It should be a detailed investigation into a subject on energy supply and/or demand, with your own analysis and conclusions outlining the way forward. You may see the focus of your dissertation as a future career path, but whatever your area of study, these final few months of the degree should embody your vision of the future.

You will take four core modules and have six elective modules from which you can choose four topics from diverse subjects relating to energy supply and demand. These include energy in industry and the built environment, renewables, energy markets from the purchaser’s perspective and water supply and management. The latter has close parallels, and directly engages, with energy. You start the course with an introduction to energy and environmental issues and energy policies and economic dimensions in the first term, but you do not need to follow the course in any particular order from this point onwards.

If you are interested in sustainability, you have the option of taking up to two elective modules from the MSc in Environmental Strategy offered by the University of Surrey.

Completing eight modules and four examinations and four modular assessments will lead to a Postgraduate Diploma. Completing four core and four elective modules and a dissertation will lead to a Masters degree. If you are interested in this course may also be interested in the MSc Renewable Energy and Power Systems Management.

The Master in Global Energy Transition and Governance aims to give a deep understanding of the complexity of the current energy transformations in Europe and worldwide. The programme offers a unique, multidisciplinary approach which distinguishes it from other Master’s courses in the field of energy studies: It analyses the links between the different levels of energy governance, from an international to a local level, offering problem-focused learning at the crossroads of theory and practice. The one-year Master’s programme stretches over three terms and takes place in two study locations: Nice and Berlin.

Overview of the year

Nice

The first term in Nice encompasses classes on the basics of the four energy modules (International energy governance, Economic energy governance, the EU energy governance and Energy and territories). Each module is complemented by seminars dealing with current energy issues. An academic or professional expert is invited for each event.

Berlin

For their second term students move on to Berlin where teaching in the four modules continues in the form of workshops. Each module organises a half-day workshop with an expert. Students prepare the workshops in group work delivering papers on themes linked to the topic of the seminar (climate negotiations, energy stock exchange, the role of the EU interconnections in the European energy market, the EU funds and the territorial energy policy). To better understand the local energy challenges in the framework of the German Energy Transition Field, visits will also be organised in co-operation with local institutions and companies. Another focus of this term will be put on the methodology classes, one dedicated to the research work and the Master’s thesis, the second one to project management.

Nice

In April students return to Nice. The third term aims at deepening their knowledge on the four energy modules. A special focus is also given to the methodological support for the students’ work on their thesis including individual meetings with the academic supervisors. In the two simulations the participants will forge their negotiation techniques with regard to the construction of wind farms at local level and work out of a strategy for an international energy cooperation. Written and oral exams in June will conclude this term.

During this term students will finalise their work on their thesis in close contact with their academic supervisors. The thesis will be delivered in mid-June and defended at the end of June.

Curriculum

International energy governance

This module delivers the theoretical knowledge on the main international energy related issues and conflicts (resource curse, neoinstitutionalism, developmentalism, weak/strong States etc.).
It also provides the participants with concrete examples of the emergence and regulation of energy conflicts worldwide in order to analyse better how they exert pressure on the security and diversification of the energy supply. (10 ECTS)

Economic energy governance

Economic and market fundamentals are applied to the energy sector in order to understand the current multiple national, regional, and local low carbon energy pathways in the world.
The module examines how the different markets are regulated and how they influence the transitions from fossil fuels to renewable energies. The economic perspective will highlight the role of liberalisation, privatisation and regulation of the sector. (10 ECTS)

European energy governance

The aim of this module is to highlight the EU priorities and its decision-making process regarding clean energy transition in Europe, thus helping to understand political economy factors that both inhibit and accelerate it.
While focusing on how the different EU policies challenge institutional architectures and multilevel governance schemes, the module provides an insight into issues currently facing European policy makers such as social acceptance, sustainability of renewable energies as well as rapid advancement in clean energy technologies. (10 ECTS)

Energy and territories

Participants will examine how EU regions and cities and more generally territories develop their own low carbon strategy at the crossroads of many policies (housing, waste management, transport, fuel poverty, environment and energy) and in the framework of a multilevel governance system.
Concrete examples of local and regional strategies will be delivered in order to analyse the levers and obstacles for more decentralisation. (10 ECTS)

Methodology modules

Students will acquire skills in research methodology, energy project management and the elaboration of energy strategies. They will concretely experiment different methodological tools: first of all through the research work for their thesis, second thanks to the methodological tools of project management. Students will be involved in a simulation game in which they will have to decide on the construction of a wind park in a territory. In a negotiation game, participants will have to elaborate a common strategy in the perspective of international energy cooperation. (20 ECTS)

Thesis

For their Master’s thesis participants will carry out a profound research work on an energy issue, chosen and elaborated in regular coordination with their supervisor.
The thesis will require the application of the methodological tools which the students have acquired during the programme.
The academic work will involve in-depth desk research, possible interviews with external partners and the writing of a thesis of approximately 17,000 words. Candidates will defend their thesis in an oral exam. (30 ECTS)

Course details

You explore the world’s dependency on hydrocarbon-based resources, together with strategies and technologies to decarbonise national economies. The course examines global best practice, government policies, industrial symbiosis and emerging risk management techniques. You also address the environmental, economic and sociological (risk and acceptability) impacts of renewable energy provision and waste exploitation as central elements.

What you study

For the PgDip award you must successfully complete 120 credits of taught modules. For an MSc award you must successfully complete the 120 credits of taught modules and a 60-credit master's research project.

Energy, environment, risk managing projects, sustainability and integrated waste management are the main foci of the programme, but you also explore the financial aspects of energy and environmental management. Economics is integral to the development of policies and is often a key influencing factor.

This programme aims to develop a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the role and place of energy in the 21st century and the way the environment impinges on the types of energy used and production methods. It also aims to investigate the environment as it is perceived, and contextualise its actual importance to mankind. Specific objectives for this course are to establish the financial validity for the pursuit of alternative energy forms and management of the environment.

Teaching

The course provides a number of contact teaching and assessment hours (through lectures, tutorials, projects, assignments), but you are also expected to spend time on your own, called 'self-study' time, to review lecture notes, prepare course work assignments, work on projects and revise for assessments. For example, each 20-credit module typically has around 200 hours of learning time.

In most cases, around 60 hours are spent in lectures, tutorials and in practical exercises. The remaining learning time is for you to gain a deeper understanding of the subject. Each year of full-time study consists of modules totalling 180 credits; hence, during one year of full-time study a student can expect to have 1,800 hours of learning and assessment.

Modules are assessed by a variety of methods including examination and in-course assessment with some utilising other approaches such as group-work or verbal/poster presentations.

Employability

There may be short-term placement opportunities for some students, particularly during the project phase of the course. This University is also in the process of seeking accreditation for the Waste Management module from the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management.

Summer period

During the summer period you will be able to choose between two tracks: (1) dissertation track and (2) practice track. Both tracks allow you to demonstrate critical insight and reflective thinking about business/management/policy issues. The tracks also help develop your written and presentation skills, and your ability to develop effective arguments. All of these attributes are transferable skills relevant to the workplace and your future career.

Dissertation track

The dissertation track gives you the opportunity to do a piece of substantial work on your own, demonstrating originality, innovation, drive, and determination. The dissertation also enables you to plan and execute your own project, giving you complete choice and flexibility.

Practice track

The practice track allows you to undertake a number of tasks, both working in teams with other members of your cohort and working individually. The practice track is designed to allow you to apply learned concepts and theories to practical problems and issues, including a management problem which will be presented to you by an organisation. This track also provides opportunities for gaining practical experience in running team projects.

BMT Hi-Q Sigma to present Case Week Project

BMT Hi-Q Sigma, a Management Consultancy providing advice and insight across Government, Defence, Energy and Transport industries, will present a business problem to practice track students as part of Case Week in June.

You will then have two weeks to propose your own solutions to the problem, using the skills and knowledge gained during the programme, under guidance from your supervisors. The week will culminate with presentations to BMT Hi-Q Sigma.

This module introduces managers to a wide range of tools and technologies appropriate for their role and projects. The module covers a range of topics including project information flows, e-business, database technologies, emerging technologies, building information modelling technologies, groupware and collaborative systems.

- Research and Communication
The aims of this module are to provide the student with an overview of sources of information in construction; to explain to students how to conduct a literature review and introduce students to the principal methods of investigation in construction research; and provide an opportunity for each student to develop professional and academic skills in oral and written communication.

- Principles of Design and Construction
This module teaches students the fundamental principles of managing a project during the design and construction phases. The module develops knowledge and understanding of the role and principles of the estimating, tendering and planning of construction projects and the importance of health and safety in relation to design and construction activities.

- Principles of Project Management
Students will gain an understanding of construction project management principles and theory. Specific areas covered include management responsibility for running construction projects; contemporary issues facing the construction industry; cultural complexity and the impact of behaviour and motivation on performance; and applying appropriate project management techniques for the different project phases.

- Federated 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM)
The creation, deployment and use of aggregated and integrated models are key goals of collaboration through BIM. This module aims to deliver hands-on practical skills on the use of BIM technologies (i.e. design software and collaboration tools) for real-time co-creation and data sharing of federated/aggregated 3D BIM models. The concept of shared situational awareness within design teams/processes will be explored.

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of strategic management and the tools for formulating and implementing strategies within the construction sector. The application of strategic management tools to develop appropriate change strategies will be explored and fundamental skills in communication, negotiation and leadership will be developed.

- People and Teams
Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of the key fundamental management principles and theory (such as motivation, teamwork, leadership, task management) and how they can be applied to managing people within the context of the construction project environment. Students will also be able to analyse current theoretical approaches to people management, appreciate importance of ethics and cultural issues and evaluate the key factors driving HRM systems.

- Procurement and Contract Procedure
This module aims to develop students understanding of procurement methods, different forms of contract and contract practice. The module is designed to give students key practical skills including advising clients on appropriate procurement and tendering methods; selecting the most appropriate form of construction contract; and manage a construction contract effectively.

- Business Economics and Finance
Students will gain a sound understanding of macro, meso and micro economics and types, sources and management of finance relating to construction organisations and projects. This will allow students to analyse the policies and operations of construction organisations and projects from an economic perspective to determine likely performance consequences and analyse corporate financial data for investment prospects and business management decisions.

- Business Economics and Finance
Students will gain a sound understanding of macro, meso and micro economics and types, sources and management of finance relating to construction organisations and projects. This will allow students to analyse the policies and operations of construction organisations and projects from an economic perspective to determine likely performance consequences and analyse corporate financial data for investment prospects and business management decisions.

- Federated 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM)
The creation, deployment and use of aggregated and integrated models are key goals of collaboration through BIM. This module aims to deliver hands-on practical skills on the use of BIM technologies (i.e. design software and collaboration tools) for real-time co-creation and data sharing of federated/aggregated 3D BIM models. The concept of shared situational awareness within design teams/processes will be explored.

Careers and further study

Previous students have gone on to work for a variety of organisations nationally and internationally. These include Arup, Atkins, BAM Nuttall Ltd, Balfour Beatty, Kier Group, Morgan Sindall, Skanska and Transport for London. Many of these organisations engage with the University in both collaborative research and in delivering lectures on the courses. This provides an ideal opportunity for students to engage in discussions about employment opportunities.

Scholarships and bursaries

The University offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a county outside the European Union. These Scholarships are to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.

Accreditation

This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng (Hons) undergraduate first degree.
The course is also accredited by the UK's Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Engineering Council and The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

The importance of well-functioning energy markets to the global economy cannot be exaggerated. As the energy mix employed by countries around the world becomes increasingly diversified, there also arises the need to develop academic curricula designed to educate a new workforce suited to this dynamic sector.

MSc Energy Finance and Markets applies principles of financial and resource economics to prepare students for careers in old and new energy markets and industries, as well as the public sector.

Although the programme content relates to a wide array of energy sector career paths, the programme is specifically targeted at candidates who are interested in career opportunities in the finance departments of energy utilities, energy/commodity trading desks of financial and energy firms, energy consultancies, as well as relevant public, academic and third sector positions.

The programme incorporates significant input from energy industry and energy commodities trading executives. Students on the programme work with industry partners to develop cutting edge trading and project solutions within consultancy projects sponsored by energy firms and commodity trading desks of financial and oil and gas institutions.

MSc Energy Finance and Markets provides students with a vital understanding of how energy markets work and energy projects are appraised from both policy and financial economics perspectives. This is done through the delivery of a careful selection of academically grounded courses with significant practical elements.

The programme is designed for candidates who desire to pursue careers that require the understanding of the political economy and financial and resource economics issues in the energy industry. It is also suited to those who desire careers in the public sector and further study in the academia.

The courses offered provide strong academic conditioning for the students, but also offer relevant industry-facing applications. Given the importance of industry relevance, the programme regularly hosts key industry stakeholders as guest lecturers and master class leaders. Students are therefore readily exposed to practical application of financial modelling and analytical techniques widely employed in the execution of energy projects, as well as those used for trading execution in the wider energy markets.

Contemporaneous policy issues are also explored in great detail, underscoring the dynamic nature of the programme’s content.

Programme structure

Learning will primarily be through lectures, set reading, class discussions, exercises, group-work assignments, problem solving in tutorials and case studies. Assessment methods include examinations, assignments, presentations or continuous assessment.

This is a broad based and flexible course that will enable you to pursue a range of environmental careers, from environmental specialist to a manager with an environmental remit. Alternatively the course, or modules within it, can provide valuable continuing professional development (CPD) should you be a professional wanting to refresh or expand your skills in environmental management. This can be done by taking the whole course or individual modules as stand-alone CPD items.

This course has been developed following extensive consultation with industry. Unusually, and perhaps uniquely, for an Environmental Management Master’s, you can include Business Management modules in your options; something that is seen as a real benefit by our industry partners. In addition, through choosing particular modules and assessment options, the course can be tailored to suit a range of environmental interests and therefore careers in the environmental and management sectors. For example this course will suit you if you wish to pursue a career in ecological consultancy, pollution control or environmental hazards and liabilities.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

You will study two compulsory 30 credit modules (one in each taught trimester) that will provide a detailed overview of environmental management practices, principles, tools and techniques. These will include topics such as pollution, EMS, biodiversity, environmental monitoring, GIS, environmental decision-making and communication skills.

Modules amounting to a further 30 credits are also selected in each taught trimester, from a choice of environmental management or business management topics. You must take a minimum of 30 credits in environmental management and there are four 15 credit environmental management modules available. These are focused on: ecosystem management; environment and society; applied geomorphology; and wastes, energy and pollution. Business management modules are available in topics such as: contemporary management issues; entrepreneurship; financial management; marketing; and managing people.

Finally, you will complete a 60 credit independent research project that will allow you to demonstrate your environmental understanding in an area relevant to your interests and career; from biodiversity to business. You may also elect to use an existing project related to your employment as your dissertation.

MODULES

TRIMESTER 1
You will study the following modules in Trimester 1:

Principles of Environmental Management (30 credits):
This compulsory module provides an overview of environmental management principles, tools, and legislation: including sustainability, resource management, environmental hazards and ecosystem services.

Plus optional modules totalling 30 credits:

Waste, Energy and Pollution Management (15 credits) optional:
Develop your understanding of the potential negative impacts that arise through human interactions with the environment. Key aspects will include resource use and polluting emissions, especially through our generation of waste and utilisation of energy sources. It will also enable you to appreciate the role of new technologies in alleviating such effects.

Environment and Society: Global Perspectives on Policy and Practice (15 credits) optional:
Gain a deeper, critical understanding of the human dimensions of environmental change. Develop your sense of the multi-layered and contested nature of environmental ‘problems’ and the ‘solutions’ variously proposed. A broad, interdisciplinary and critical awareness is encouraged through consideration of academic and policy literatures from different global and historical contexts.

Business Management Options:
Environmental managers often need a range of management skills, and these modules will allow you to develop some of these important skills. Modules available include: Financial Management, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Managing People, and Management in Practice. Management in Practice is a 30 credit module providing an excellent overview if you have no formal business training. The other modules are 15 credit modules and will allow the development of specific skills.


TRIMESTER 2
You will study the following modules in Trimester 2:

Professional Practice for Environmental Management (30 credits):
This compulsory module develops key professional skills, including: GIS, environmental risks and decision- making, survey and monitoring, sampling design, data management and analysis, reporting and communication.

Plus optional modules totalling 30 credits:

Ecosystem Management (15 credits) optional:
Modern economic theory (ecological economics) considers ecosystem sustainability as the foundation of all economic sustainability and its crucial role in underpinning business and political decisions. Hence, this module investigates the natural environment in terms of ecosystem functions and resource management, both of which can provide benefits and provide challenges for human beings and the wider environment. It also considers the extent to which we can assign economic value to nature.

Applied Geomorphology (15 credits) optional:
Develop the theoretical and practical skills to equip you to undertake integrated and applied geomorphological projects relevant to the environmental management and consultancy sectors.

Business Management Options:
From a range of management skills and specialisms (see Trimester 1 options)

TRIMESTER 3
In this trimester you complete a 60 credit research project, which will require you to research an applied environmental question. There is considerable flexibility in subject choice and the project focus will reflect your core interests, and may range from the influence of environmental issues on business decision-making, to monitoring biodiversity. This could include industry-based/work placement projects, with our industry partners.

TEACHING METHODS AND RESOURCES

Teaching is a mix of lectures, seminars, small tutor groups, practical/field work sessions and online/desk- based study.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The dependence of economic sustainability and social wellbeing on a sustainable natural environment is now accepted, and through several international agreements, Governments across the world have acknowledged the urgent need to secure environmental sustainability. The need for well- informed Environmental Managers has therefore never been greater. This means managers who not only understand the environment, but also understand its importance to economic and social well being.

This Master’s will provide you with the expertise, practical skills and confidence to pursue specialist careers in environmental management, environmental consultancy or ecology and provide crucial environmental understanding for successful careers in local government, the civil service, engineering, planning or business.

A range of assessment methods are used, all with a strong emphasis on applying the skills you learn during your course to workplace scenarios. With declining fossil energy resources, environmental pollution and climate change, the need for sustainable energy supply is becoming more important. The international community has agreed upon the use of renewable energy as an instrument towards a sustainable energy development. Management of energy resources and technologies is a global issue and it needs well trained workforce – from policy level to practitioner level.

The objective of the program is to form such experts. Focusing on developing countries in the tropics and subtropics the MSc. Renewable Energy Management emphasizes a holistic approach considering both technical and socioeconomic aspects of energy management. Participants are provided with appropriate knowledge, methods and skills to analyze current problems in the field of renewable energy usage and related sectors.

Target groups of the program are recently graduated professionals with working experience in public or private institutions, authorities and enterprises of the energy sector. The applicants should be active in or dealing with energy or natural resources management and have an interest in learning and working in an intercultural and multidisciplinary environment.

The master program “Renewable Energy Management” (REM) provides a practice oriented and skills-based learning experience in which students develop their capacity for critical thinking, and creative problem solving. It addresses bachelor’s degree holders principally in Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences with experience in the area of energy, who aim to deepen their knowledge in Renewable Energy Resources Management and wish to acquire management and leadership skills as well as regional and intercultural competences. These experts should have a sound knowledge base in one of the many fields of renewable energy management. They ought to be able to assess renewable energy resources and develop appropriate solutions considering the complex linkages of renewable energy with economic, social and ecological aspects.

Contents

The studies cover a period of four semesters. The fourth semester is dedicated to the master thesis.

The didactic concept consists of two components: a technical and a social. The technical component provides the participants with the relevant and up to date knowledge necessary to take decisions towards a sustainable management of natural resources. The social component is equally important and aims at equipping the participants with the communicative, intercultural and managerial skills necessary to take up leadership positions in the natural resources sector and to work effectively in the framework of international cooperation.

Some of the core modules covered in this master include: Management of natural resources systems, International Cooperation and Development, Economics and governance. These are complimented by Methods and Tools such as using the Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing, environmental monitoring and Statistics, and learning to apply the knowledge in Projects.

The Energy and Environmental Management postgraduate course allows you to gain an MSc, PGCert or PGDip awards. A critical approach to theories, techniques and methods in energy and environmental management is developed and provides you with a learning environment in which you will develop a capacity for independent study, an ability to collaborate with others in team settings, and a capacity for critical thought and reflection.

Several modules on the Energy and Environmental Management postgraduate course are currently accredited by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management. UCLan also intend to gain accreditation from the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management and the Energy Institute.
