The optional fashion track within the Master of Arts in Global Communications (MAGC) addresses this misperception. It offers courses taught by theorists of fashion and professionals in the field. Students get the chance to explore the many facets of fashion communications.

From traditional to cutting-edge

The specialized fashion track of MAGC provides an in-depth background applicable to careers in traditional fashion communications, as well as in several expanding and cutting-edge aspects of the industry including:
-The marketing of global luxury brands.
-The rise of ethical fashion, such as cause-related marketing, Labor Behind the Label, and sustainable consumption.
-NGO fashion and textile production for sustainable development.
-Cultural implications of globalized fashion.
-The digital revolution in fashion journalism and marketing including blogs and websites.
-Fashion centers and cities worldwide.

Students take introductory background courses which provide theories and models to prepare them for study of specific fashion issues in modules. These modules are taught by visiting professionals and researchers, top in their fields.

This specialized knowledge will be supplemented by and integrated with courses for the Master of Arts in Global Communications.

Structure of the specialized track

As in the regular MA in Global Communications program, coursework can be completed in three semesters, including the summer. The length of the internship or thesis may vary, however—many students choose to take additional time for these components. The program requirements for the MAGC Fashion Track are as follows:
-Four core courses (16 credits)
-Four fashion modules (8 credits)
-Two courses out of a list of seven core options (8 credits)
-Two electives chosen from any of the Global communications graduate course offerings (8 credits)
-Final project: thesis or internship (8 credits)

Core courses focus on the fundamentals of global communications—and particularly how they relate to the fashion industry and fashion theory. Modules include such specialized topics as Asian Fashion Communication, Applied Design Thinking for Sustainability, and Paris Style, An Emerging Designer Pop-up Store, among many others. You also have a choice of practicums in sustainable development, NGOs, or Branding and courses in PR and journalism.

The optional Visual and Material Culture Track (VMC) within the Master of Art in Global Communications (MAGC) offers an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural consideration of the increasing importance of visuality and interactivity in today’s world.

Students acquire in-depth knowledge of visual theories, contexts, and practices and their relationship to the global media—and develop critical thinking about the cultural forces behind visuality as a communicative practice.

Vision and visuality: more than meets the eye

Social, political, and economic conditions shape seeing and the production of objects and events for visual consumption. Reaching beyond traditional understandings of media and communication, we examine such things as imaging systems, screen practices, data graphics, architecture, tourism, performance, gaming, body ornamentation, race, gender, and sexuality—and all of these on both a global scale and within regional traditions.

Incorporating non-Western contributions to the field, this track combines a critical approach to theoretical and scientific understandings of vision and visuality with a rigorous consideration of the functions of the viewer, object, and environment in specific circumstances.

Ideal candidates—and outcomes

Students pursuing this track will likely have studied or worked in art, anthropology, cultural studies, psychology, design, publishing, marketing, image-based journalism or film—or be interested in pursuing careers in those fields.

The VMC track prepares students for professional careers in communications or further graduate study.

Core courses focus on the fundamentals of global communications and the physical and cultural conditions of vision. You may explore how people come to identify—and believe in—brands, or study representations of gender in a globalized media environment.

As for electives, you have the choice of several practicums, including in video, broadcasting, branding, and advertising, as well as courses as diverse as identify formation to color as communication in marketing and art.

Theoretical foundation for broad understanding

This track is designed for both professionals seeking broader academic training and new students seeking a range of specific training and broad understanding. The theoretical part of this degree examines issues of power, political and institutional agency, discourse, and mediated communication. Hands-on training for practical application

We live in a communications-saturated world where 24-hour news coverage, access to the internet and the use of social media have become the norm for millions of people. Global events are instantly reported by the news media, analysed and interpreted by them and millions of ordinary citizens. These developments challenge the traditionally secretive practices of international diplomacy and the ability of governments to control information whilst also creating powerful new tools for propaganda; they enhance the importance of cultural or ‘soft’ power in international relations and they have also transformed the nature of warfare.

This course is run by the Department of History, Politics and Philosophy in conjunction with the Department of Information and Communication.

This course focuses on political communication in a global context, looking at the development of message production, transmission, and reception across nations as well as key theories, themes and controversies.

Course content

The course provides you with an essential foundation in communications theory, marketing strategy and public relations practice.

You’ll explore the history and theory of corporate communications, connecting communications to overall corporate strategy. An astonishing global revolution has taken place in mobile and satellite communications, the full impact of which is difficult to exaggerate. The resulting growth in mobile and satellite communications industries has created a high demand for graduates with expertise in the key areas of digital, mobile and satellite communications and networking.

With significant input from industry, this course produces highly competent graduates who can fill key positions and play leading roles in shaping this rapidly evolving field. By graduation, you will be well-equipped to develop new engineering applications for the next generation of communication systems. You will also be given the chance to undertake a six-month unpaid internship*.

Your studies will include advances in antennas and propagation, digital transmission, satellite communications, mobile communications, satellite networks, wireless applications, digital signal processing and product management. All this is enriched with seminars, field trips and a period of internship* in industry. You will also learn to use the latest engineering design tools, including the Systems ToolKit (STK) used by NASA for planning space missions.

You will be taught through lectures, tutorials and workshops involving hands-on systems modelling and simulations using state-of-the-art hardware and software facilities. Students will also engage in supervised research supported by full access to world-class online and library facilities.

The course is available to study via two main routes, you can opt to add further value to your studies by undertaking an internship or simply focus on building your academic knowledge through a on-campus study as detailed below:

MSc Mobile and Satellite Communications (with internship):

- Delivery: Full-time only | Start dates: September and February
If you choose to undertake an internship, your course will be delivered in four major blocks that offer an intensive but flexible learning pattern. Six taught modules are completed during two teaching blocks featuring 12 contact hours per week. This is followed by 6 month period of internship, after which the student returns to undertake a 16-week major research project. Please note: Course length may vary dependent on your chosen start date.


MSc Mobile and Satellite Communications (without internship):

- Delivery: Full-time and Part-time | Start dates: September and February
The study pathway available without internship is available full-time and part-time. The full-time route is delivered in three major blocks. Six taught modules are completed during two teaching blocks featuring 12 contact hours per week followed by a 16-week major research project. The full-time course duration is about 12 months, if you study part-time then you will complete the course in three years. Part-time study involves completing three modules in each of the first two years and a major research project in the final year. The use of block-mode delivery in this way allows flexible entry and exit, and also enables practising engineers to attend a single module as a short course.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

Advancements in technology such as the increased use of Wi-Fi, are creating exciting career opportunities for graduates with the right skills. Graduates of this Masters award can enter the telecommunications industry in many different roles, conduct research or work towards a PhD.

Internship

Internships are only available to students studying full-time: Following successful completion of six taught modules, you will be competitively selected to join participating UK companies or University Research Centres on a six-month period of unpaid work placement before returning to undertake your major research project. All students who have an offer for the MSc Mobile and Satellite Communications (with internship) are guaranteed an internship either in industry or in a University Research Centre.

There are 25 internship places available. Students who wish to undertake an internship must apply for the MSc Mobile and Satellite Communications (with internship). It is anticipated that there will be significant demand for this programme and applicants are advised to apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Applications will be considered on a first come first served basis and the numbers of students offered a place on the programme with internship will be capped.

If the course is already full and we are unable to offer you a place on the Masters course with internship, we may be able to consider you for the standard MSc Mobile and Satellite Communications (without internship) which is a shorter programme.

Assessment methods

Each of the six taught modules is typically assessed through 50% coursework and 50% closed-book class test. The major project is assessed through presentation to a panel of examiners, viva and written report.

Facilities

A state-of-the-art University library gives you access to most of the world’s leading publications. Other major facilities include a Cisco Academy networking laboratory, a Wireless Communications laboratory including a 1-65 GHz anechoic chamber and a satellite communication earth station, and a Communication Systems simulation laboratory equipped with PCs running the latest versions of MATLAB, SIMULINK, STK and other software.

In addition, we have recently opened a Calypto lab, which has software licences and support for the Catapult C toolset. This is used to develop advanced electronic products, such as the next generation of smart phones, more quickly and cost-effectively and to help engineers overcome design challenges in the increasingly complex world of board and chip design. The lab is sponsored by Calypto Design Systems Inc, a leader in electronic design automation. We are one of only four UK universities and 60 universities globally that have been granted permission to use the software worth £1.9m.

The new Renesas Embedded Systems lab comprises 25 new high-end terminals running cuttingedge tools. The facility was designed in collaboration with Renesas, the world’s leading supplier of microcontrollers, whose sponsorship helps ensure that students are always working with the latest technologies and development tools.

It is a commonplace that communication is at the core of crucial aspects of human life, and that a lot of that communication is mediated. In recent years, however, mediated communication has reached new levels of importance in social and cultural domains stretching from business to identity formation, and a lot of that communication is technically and financially underpinned by global networks of computation and communication. The academic fields of media, communication and cultural studies have responded by re-examining long-established frameworks for understanding communications and also by considering the need for new paradigms fitting new objects of study.

The MA in International Communications Studies - which is designed to meet the needs of graduates from both a communications and non-communications studies background - provides an opportunity not only to study communications against the background of recent theoretical and methodological developments, but also to gain an insight into the skills and knowledge required by the contemporary media and communication industries.

Aims

The aims of the MA International Communications Studies programme are to enable students to:

- Enhance their knowledge and understanding of the theoretical bases of verbal and non-verbal communication
- Enhance their knowledge and understanding of the cultural, social, political and economic bases of communications internationally
- Acquire a high level of proficiency in an East-Asian language or in one European language other than English
- Develop their intellectual skills
- Make use of some of the specialised forms of knowledge in the disciplines represented on the degree
- Practice and develop a wide range of transferable skills that will prepare students for further study and for employment

Course Structure

Semester One

Compulsory modules provide the core skills and knowledge needed to analyse various forms of communication in their contemporary social and cultural settings as well as an opportunity to acquire either a modern European (French, Spanish, German) or East-Asian language (Japanese or Chinese). These modules include Communications Theory and Research Methodologies; Approaches to Globalisation and Contemporary Communications and Contemporary Communications society and Culture. The module Communications Theory and Research Methodologies is specifically designed to provide students with insight into how the theory and methodology of contemporary communications can be applied directly to differing forms of media production.

Semester Two

Students will continue to study their chosen language. Students will continue to develop their dissertation projects with the aid of their supervisors and in the compulsory module Media and Communication Research Methods 2. Optional modules allow students to immerse themselves in topics suiting their interests and future career goals.

This Programme in Mobile and Satellite Communications reflects the importance of mobile telephony, mobile data communications and satellite-based communications as complementary technologies.

Students will gain a detailed knowledge of the fundamentals and advanced concepts involved in communications and 3G/4G/5G mobile technology, and satellite-based communications and networking.

This material is complemented by study in areas such as mobile applications and web services, mobile app software development, RF design, the Internet of Things, and network management.

The emergence of the internet and digital culture has affected all societies, albeit unevenly. This programme explores the global dimensions of digital culture, focusing on digital creativity and practices in the global South. Students are taught to understand the historical development of digital technologies and the internet, exploring their impact and meaning in diverse economic, political and cultural realms. They study contemporary theories of the digital and consider their adequacy for understanding the non-Western world, while developing knowledge of a range of research tools for understanding the internet, social media and big data.

Students are encouraged to develop arguments about the global dimensions of digital culture in written and oral forms. In addition, they explore the shifting lines between theory and practice by becoming digital adepts, developing collective and individual blogs and acquiring other digital multi-media skills.
