The MA in German Language and Culture in Europe is a new jointly taught programme by German Studies experts at both Mary Immaculate College and the University of Limerick. The design of the course responds to the demand for plurilingual European citizens and reflects Ireland’s increasing integration into a constantly changing European Union in which Germany represents a crucial economic, political and cultural force. By positioning German culture firmly within an EU and broader European context, the programme explores its relationship with Europe, the cultural dimensions of the European integration process and the inter-relationship of German and neighbouring cultures. Alongside comparative cultural knowledge the programme intends to provide graduates with high-level language competence in order to equip them with both the linguistic and conceptual skills to operate in an increasingly multicultural environment in Ireland and abroad and function effectively as cultural mediators between Ireland and the German-speaking countries. Designed to prepare students for leadership roles in cross-cultural contexts both within Ireland and for the EU, this programme is also attractive to existing and future teachers of German in secondary schools, where a progressive Europeanisation of the curriculum will be one of the features of educational reforms, and to students interested in evolving employment prospects in the tourism sector or multi-national companies.

The programme will enable students to:
• Analyse and interpret German-language culture within a broader European context, including the inter-relationship between Ireland and Germany, Switzerland, Austria

The degree programme comprises eight module groups:

A) You will choose two focus areas from the offered historical areas as intensive modules: Ancient History, the Middle Ages, Modernity and Contemporary History, Eastern European History, Ecclesiastical History and Auxiliary Sciences of History.

B) You may choose any of the history courses offered in module group A to extend your knowledge of history.

C) You will present your own scientific aims for debate in a colloquium and critically appraise other research contributions.

D) This module teaches auxiliary sciences and predominantly source-oriented courses.

E) In this module group you consolidate your knowledge of history theory, methods and economic history. The module group also includes courses in history education, including theory and methods.

F) As the degree programme was designed to be interdisciplinary, you may attend courses for related scientific disciplines, such as Catholic Theology; Philosophy; Art History; German, English or Romance Philology; Slavic Literature and Cultural Studies; Political Science; Sociology or Geography.

As part of the degree programme you will write a thesis on a topic selected from module group A. Students who complete the programme will receive a total of 120 ECTS credits.

German language requirements

You will need good German language skills to study this degree programme, as that is the main language of instruction for this programme. Therefore, you will have to provide a recognised German language certificate when enrolling for the programme, unless you can demonstrate that German was the language of instruction for your secondary school education (e.g. Abitur at a German international school) or your first undergraduate degree (i.e. a German-taught bachelor's degree programme).

The University of Passau has set up a German language teaching unit, German Courses Passau, which offers a selection of preparatory language programmes tailored to the needs of international students. These range from summer courses to a full academic year and cater to learners of all levels.

Additional language requirements

You should provide a certificate in both Latin and English at level UNIcert® I/B1 CEFR or equivalent.

If you do not intend to select the Ancient World or Middle Ages focus modules, you may provide a certificate in a Romance language (French, Spanish, Italian) instead of Latin.

If you intend to select the Eastern-European History focus module, you are required to provide a certificate in an Eastern-European language at level UNIcert® I/B1 CEFR but not in Latin.

Admission requirements for international students

1. A completed Bachelor's degree in Linguistics or related area
In order to get admission to this Master's you’ll need a completed Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics. Students with a Bachelor’s degree in specific language, like German, Dutch and such, or with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Information Sciences can also apply, provided they took at least 60 ECTS worth of courses in the field of linguistics.

2. Proficiency in English
In order to take part in this programme, you need to have fluency in both written and spoken English. Non-native speakers of English* without a Dutch Bachelor's degree or VWO diploma need one of the following:
- A TOEFL score of >600 (paper based) or >100 (internet based)
- An IELTS score of >7.0
- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) with a mark of C or higher

You will study the process of learning and the use of second languages. The programme allows you to focus your research on your language of choice, for instance Dutch as a second language, but also French, German, Swedish, Chinese, or any other language.

About the Department of English Language and Linguistics

English Language and Linguistics (ELL), founded in 2010, is the newest department of the School of European Culture and Languages (SECL). ELL is a dynamic and growing department with a vibrant research culture. We specialise in experimental and theoretical linguistics. In particular, our interests focus on quantitative and experimental research in speech and language processing, variation and acquisition, but also cover formal areas such as syntax, as well as literary stylistics. In addition to English and its varieties, our staff work in French, German, Greek, Romani, Korean, Spanish and Russian.

Staff and postgraduates are members of the Centre for Language and Linguistic Studies (CLLS), a research centre that seeks to promote interdisciplinary linguistic research. Course structure

The programme starts with three linguistics modules (Sounds, Structure and Meaning) and a module on language awareness for teachers (Language Awareness and Analysis) so that you have a firm grasp of the linguistic bases of language teaching and how to apply them to the classroom.

In the spring term the focus is on how languages are learned (Second Language Acquisition), how you can improve classroom technique (The Practice of TESOL), plan for your students’ needs (Course and Syllabus Design) and provide them with materials which will be interesting, effective and motivating (Materials Evaluation and Development).

The dissertation will be an opportunity to plan and develop a piece of empirical research which can be of direct relevance to your current or planned teaching situation.

Assessment

Modules are typically assessed by a 3-4,000-word essay, but assessment patterns can include practical/experimental work, report and proposal writing, critiques, problem solving and seminar presentations. You also complete a 12-15,000-word research dissertation on a topic agreed with your supervisor.

- Provide TESOL practitioners with advanced knowledge of linguistics related to language pedagogy, informed by research and scholarship, which will enhance, develop and inform their understanding of language learning and classroom practice.

English Language and Linguistics is the main contributor to the Centre for Language and Linguistics. The Faculty of Education has a longstanding national reputation for providing high-calibre initial teacher training with over 20 Secondary specialisms available. We have a well established partnership with over 800 secondary school and colleges across the North West region and beyond.

MFL is a national shortage subject and government priority with training bursaries available and this course has an excellent reputation. There is a growing need for high calibre language teachers and as such our trainees are very employable. Where appropriate, sessions are conducted in the relevant target language. We welcome applications from native speakers.

We offer specialisms in French, German, Mandarin and Spanish. Subject to confirmation of DfE funding, we usually run Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses as part of the PGCE. These will be identified at interview for applicants who need support learning a second language and confirmed with a PGCE place offer.

Trainees take a course of supporting study, including English as an additional language (EAL) and special educational needs (SEN).
A minimum of 120 days school based practice training is combined with university based training and periods of independent study. Trainees are supported throughout by university and placement mentors.

These courses are available via University led and School Direct routes.

We also offer an Assessment-Only route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) aimed at experienced, but unqualified graduate teachers, wishing to complete a formal qualification.

Placement options

School placements are central to the course. Trainees on the University-led ('Core') route typically spend at least 120 days on school-based training. As an intending teacher you will begin by developing professional awareness, understanding and skills common to learning and teaching in a variety of settings. You will begin to understand the inter-relationship between the school and its community.

Placements are organised by Manchester Met and will be in at least two different schools or colleges and ranging from inner city to rural settings, mixed and single gender schools, City Academies, Comprehensives and Selective Schools, 11-16, 11-18, sixth form and further education colleges.

School Direct trainees are attached to a specified ('lead') school within an alliance of schools and will typically spend at least 135 days on school-based training, depending on the term-times of the school(s) involved. The lead school organises placements.

In addition we have exchanges with France, German and Spain to offer placements abroad during the Enrichment phase of the course. We are also working closely with the Confucius Institute to develop links with China.

About the Course

The duration of this one year full time programme is 36 weeks (September to June). 24 weeks will be spent in school and 12 weeks in university.

In addition to your main language, you will take one of the other three languages as your second language. You will be prepared to teach your main language throughout the 11-18 age range. In your second language, you will be prepared to teach up to either key stage 3 or key stage 4/GCSE, according to qualifications and linguistic competence. Where possible, we take into consideration other languages you may have. We offer SKE (Subject Knowledge Enhancement) in French, German, Spanish and Mandarin to support trainees learning a language from scratch. In addition we have exchanges with France, German and Spain to offer placements abroad during Enrichment phase of the course. We are also working closely with the Confucius Institute to develop links with China.

This course enables you to acquire and develop language teaching skills. You will become aware of the needs of pupils of different abilities and of the goals and methods appropriate to them. You will be prepared for a wide variety of teaching situations by observing good practice in schools and modelling in university sessions, through discussions, peer teaching and practical workshops and through intensive practical teaching to a range of abilities. Feedback from experienced teachers and tutors facilitates your professional development.

Classroom management skills are given high priority both at the University and during school placements. Equally, an emphasis is placed upon careful planning, and you will develop the skills of linguistic analysis and sequencing.

You will learn how to teach both the spoken and written language, how to approach teaching grammar and how to plan for using the target language in the classroom. The course aims to develop a thoughtful and critical approach to the relationship between teaching strategies and the pupils' language learning in the classroom. You will learn how to assess and evaluate pupils' learning and how to use this in future planning. Other issues that form part of the course include language acquisition, cultural background, global citizenship and equal opportunities.

In addition to preparation for Key Stages 3-5, we also include provision for Key Stage 2 and you will compile a Primary Languages Portfolio. Methodology sessions in the university are conducted in your main foreign language where appropriate foreign language tutors will help you develop or maintain your language skills in your second foreign language.

We aim to develop analytical, successful and enthusiastic beginning teachers who are fully aware of the excitement and challenges which lie ahead and who can work effectively in a variety of educational settings.

Trainees will engage with current educational issues and recent and relevant research in order to further develop their understanding and to generate challenging and lively debate. There will be a focus on:

The MA in Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures: Narratives of Conflict (German lead language) aims to provide students who already have a background in German at undergraduate level with an opportunity to specialise in the area of literary analysis with particular emphasis on narratives of conflict in the cultures and societies of German-speaking countries. The programme introduces students to academic research, new ideas and theoretical approaches. It aims to equip students with academic, analytical, creative, reflective and presentation skills in order to foster interest and involvement in the field of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures with specific emphasis on narratives of conflict. It also aims to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding of important concepts of European languages, literatures, cultures and societies, in particular with regard to Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Course Structure

The part-time MA in Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures: Narratives of Conflict is a two-year degree programme. The structure is the same as outlined for the full-time programme but it is spread over two years. Before registration for the part-time programme, students should agree a plan of taking modules with the Head of Subject of the ‘lead language’ (German).

The Viva Voce Examination will be taken at the end of the second year, and the minor thesis has to be submitted by the end of July of the second year for graduation in November of the same year. Alternatively, the thesis can be submitted by the end of October of the second year (without any additional financial implications) for graduation in September of the following year.

1. Students choose a ‘lead language’; they are obliged to take both language modules in this language.

2. Students have to take at least one (in French two) of the subject-specific modules offered by the lead language subject.

3. Students have to take ML 610 (Research Skills) and the modules concerned with narratives of conflict.

4. For the remaining 10 credits, students can either choose the remaining subject-specific module(s), or they can choose two of the remaining SMLLC modules.

5. The Viva Voce Examination ML629 (conducted – at least partly – in the ‘lead language’) in early June.

6. Minor theses will be supervised by SMLLC Full-time members of staff after consultation with the student.

Career Options

This interdisciplinary MA gives students an ideal starting point for an academic career in literary studies, conflict studies or language studies. The combination of subject-specific, interdisciplinary and transferable skills, which are the intended outcome of the programme, would also make it a useful qualification for entry into the teaching profession, research work, or for careers with an international dimension, in diplomacy, journalism, business or academia.

The Linguistics MA allows you to study phonology and syntax alongside a pathway of your choice in English Language, Language Acquisition or European Languages. The course, characterised by its flexibility, equips you with the research skills necessary to undertake independent study in linguistics.

The common subjects the course covers include theoretical and general linguistics, descriptive linguistics (whether focusing on English or on other languages), applied linguistics, and combinations of these specialisms. By choosing one of the pathways, you will be able to focus on your area of specific interest.

By the end of the course you will understand and engage with ideas at the forefront of linguistic research and address linguistic questions and problems currently being debated.

Delivery

During two 12-week semesters you will study six modules delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops and field work. These are supplemented by academic events and invited international specialists. You work closely with your supervisor on a 15,000 –18,000-word dissertation.

The MRes in German & Comparative Literature is a one-year (full-time) or two-year (part-time) research-based Masters degree designed for students who wish to study German literature within a broader international context.

Students on the programme take modules totalling 180 credits. These include one compulsory module worth 20 credits on contemporary debates relating to literature acorss cultures, as well as one compulsory Guided Reading module worth 20 credits, where you will work closely with a member of staff on a topic related to their research specialism of your choosing. A supervised 25,000-word dissertation worth 120 credits (20,000 word dissertation plus 5,000 word preparatory critical survey) on a comparative topic combining German and European literature is normally completed in the summer. In addition, students choose one further optional module totalling 20 credits, taught over one semester.

Admission requirements for international students

1. A completed Bachelor's degree in Linguistics or related area
In order to get admission to this Master's you’ll need a completed Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics. Students with a Bachelor’s degree in specific language, like German, Dutch and such, or with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Information Sciences can also apply, provided they took at least 60 ECTS worth of courses in the field of linguistics.

2. Proficiency in English
In order to take part in this programme, you need to have fluency in both written and spoken English. Non-native speakers of English* without a Dutch Bachelor's degree or VWO diploma need one of the following:
- A TOEFL score of >600 (paper based) or >100 (internet based)
- An IELTS score of >7.0
- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) with a mark of C or higher

West Chester and Millersville Universities launched a new combined graduate degree program, the Master of Arts in Languages and Cultures in German, in Fall 2014. This single degree program is presented by both language departments in collaboration and coordination to facilitate the prompt and successful completion of the students’ coursework, as meaningfully and efficiently as possible. The 11 courses of the 33-credit degree program may be completed in from 2-5 years.

The program contains three required core seminars totaling 9 credits to be taken by all students enrolled for the degree program: L[A]NC 501 on linguistics, L[A]NC 502 on interpretive strategies, and L[A]NC 503 on cultural studies. These seminars will all be offered each academic calendar year, shared by both schools, and will be taught online, to allow students in all three languages to study and work together.

Additionally there is a general curriculum of 12 semester hours in German, which includes courses in communicative proficiencies and cultural competencies.

Courses may be offered in all six academic sessions of each calendar year, including both semesters, the three summer sessions, and the winter session.

To complete the master’s degree experience, students may choose up to 12 semester credit hours from elective options, in accord with their experience, needs, and future professional career plans. These may include courses in other fields such as nursing, marketing, criminal justice, etc., study abroad, an internship, or courses in pedagogy, or selected courses from the PA K-12 Graduate Certification in German curriculum. The elective courses may also include all 12 credits in German or another program language (French or Spanish) at the graduate level.

Exit requirements for all students are uniform, an exit capstone project of a specialized written and oral exam, or a research project, or a portfolio of three projects, defended at an oral exam with the faculty.

Internships

The Department of Languages and Cultures offers a three, six, nine or twelve credit-hour internship to junior or senior majors and minors in languages or linguistics and to graduate students in French, German and Spanish who wish to enhance their study of a world language in communication, culture, and linguistics with an educational experience directly in the workplace, either in the United States or abroad.

Interns are expected to engage in written and oral experience in the studied language on a regular basis. Internships help students test and develop their skills of expression and communication in the world language or in English, if the internship involves the Teaching of English as a Second Language or English linguistics. Internships may be salaried, but unpaid or volunteer positions also qualify.

Students who seek to pursue this type of elective credit-bearing on-the-job experience by teaching a world language, Teaching English as a Second Language or by working for a company that conducts business in one of our languages or in areas related to English linguistics should contact their advisor to review information regarding job search, company contacts, contractual procedures and semester credit evaluation and approval. Graduate level LAN 525 internships may be arranged as the elective component of the Master of Arts in Languages and Cultures, for up to 12 credits.
