This MSc aims to offer health and social care professionals, and graduates in related fields, the opportunity to explore the complex health and social needs of older individuals living in today’s society. It provides high quality integrated and multidisciplinary education in the field of ageing, health and disease through the teaching and learning opportunities in the modules.

The teaching draws on the latest thinking and research evidence in the field and the course is open to a range of health and social care professionals, mirroring the multidisciplinary nature of gerontology.

The course starts in September each year and is full-time over one year (approximately nine months for the taught stage plus three months for the dissertation).

You may exit the course early with a Postgraduate Certificate if you successfully complete 60 credits, including the Foundations of Geriatric Medicine module. Programme details

The MSc in Experimental Therapeutics is a part-time course consisting of six modules and a research project and dissertation. The programme is normally completed in two to three years. Students are full members of the University of Oxford and are matriculated as members of an Oxford college.

The modules in this programme can also be taken as individual short courses. It is possible to transfer credit from up to three previously completed modules into the MSc programme, if the time elapsed between commencement of the accredited module(s) and registration for the MSc is not more than two years.

Course aims

The aim of the MSc programme is to provide students with the necessary training and practical experience to enable them to understand the principles that underpin clinical research, and to enable them to translate that understanding into good clinical and research practice.

By the end of the MSc programme, students should understand the following core principles:

- Development, marketing and regulations of drugs
- Pharmaceutical factors that affect drug therapy
- Pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenetics and pharmacodynamics
- Adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, and pharmacovigilance
- Designing phase I, II and III clinical trials for a range of novel therapeutic interventions (and imaging agents).
- Application of statistics to medicine
- Laboratory assays used to support trial end-points
- Use of non-invasive imaging in drug development
- Application of analytical techniques

By the end of the programme, students should be equipped to:

- demonstrate a knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques for solving clinical research problems and translate this into good clinical and research practice
- apply skills gained in techniques and practical experience from across the medical and biological sciences
- develop skills in managing research-based work in experimental therapeutics
- carry out an extended research project involving a literature review, problem specification and analysis in experimental therapeutics and write a short dissertation

Guidance from the UK Royal College of Physician's Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine

The Faculty have confirmed that if enrolled for Pharmaceutical Medicine Specialty Training (PMST), trainees may be able to use knowledge provided by Experimental Therapeutics modules to cover aspects of a module of the PMST curriculum. Trainees are advised to discuss this with their Educational Supervisor.

Experimental Therapeutics modules may also be used to provide those pursuing the Faculty's Diploma in Pharmaceutical Medicine (DPM) with the necessary knowledge required to cover the Diploma syllabus. Applicants for the DPM exam are advised to read the DPM syllabus and rules and regulations.

Members of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine who are registered in the Faculty's CPD scheme can count participation in Experimental Therapeutics modules towards their CPD record. Non-members may wish to obtain further advice about CPD credit from their Royal College or Faculty.

Assessment methods

To complete the MSc, students need to:

Attend the six modules and complete an assessed written assignment for each module.
Complete a dissertation on a topic chosen in consultation with a supervisor and the Course Director.

Dissertation:
The dissertation is founded on a research project that builds on material studied in the taught modules. The dissertation should normally not exceed 15,000 words.

The project will normally be supervised by an academic supervisor from the University of Oxford, and an employer-based mentor.

- The outcomes of non-surgical management of tubal pregnancy; a 6 month study of the South East London population

- Analysis of the predictive and prognostic factors of outcome in a cohort of patients prospectively treated with perioperative chemotherapy for adenocarcinoma of the stomach or of the gastroesophageal junction

- Evolution of mineral and bone disorder in early Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): the role of FGF23 and vitamin D

- Survey of patients' knowledge and perception of the adverse drug reporting scheme (yellow cards) in primary care

- The predictive role of ERCC1 status in oxaliplatin based Neoadjuvant for metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) to the liver

- Endothelial Pathophysiology in Dengue - Dextran studies during acute infection

- Literature review of the use of thalidomide in cancer

- An investigation into the phenotypical and functional characteristics of mesenchymal stem cells for clinical application

- Identification of genetic variants that cause capecitabine and bevacizumab toxicity

- Bridging the evidence gap in geriatric medicines via modelling and simulations

Teaching methods

The class-based modules will include a period of preparatory study, a week of intensive face-to-face lectures and tutorials, followed by a period for assignment work. Attendance at modules will be a requirement for study. Some non-classroom activities will be provided at laboratory facilities elsewhere in the University. The course will include taught material on research skills. A virtual learning environment (VLE) will provide between-module support.

The taught modules will include group work, discussions, guest lectures, and interaction and feedback with tutors and lecturers. Practical work aims to develop the students' knowledge and understanding of the subject.

MA/POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN GERONTOLOGY

This course will be of interest to professionals working with older people in the public, independent and voluntary sectors, as well as those wishing to pursue studies or a career in ageing research or practice.

The course presents students with a unique opportunity to broaden their knowledge about ageing and older people, their needs and the services provided for them, and skills necessary for effective health, social and voluntary work. It aims to integrate advances in knowledge about social, psychological and biological aspects of ageing, with an update and review of developments in policy and service delivery. The course provides a critical perspective on growing older and develops students’ skills and awareness of the importance of research and evaluation.

Since 2006, the MA in Gerontology has been taught in conjunction with the MSc in Geriatric Medicine for four of the six course modules. This interdisciplinarity is a key strength of the programme, with students finding the interchange of ideas and perspectives stimulating and educationally rewarding.

The course comprises six one-week modules which can be taken either full-time in one year or part-time over two years. In addition to passing these modules, Masters degree students are required to write a dissertation. Students who pass all the taught modules (120 credits) but do not complete the dissertation may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma. Dissertation

The MA in Gerontology includes the requirement to undertake a 12,000-15,000 word Research Dissertation. The dissertation offers students the opportunity to conduct a substantial piece of research on a relevant topic and to deepen their knowledge of a particular aspect of gerontology. Individual and small group sessions are used to support and problem-solve around the process of undertaking a dissertation in gerontology.

There are no formal examinations. Assessment is continuous and based upon assignments (e.g. essays, project work, presentations) and the dissertation. The pass mark for all modules is 50%.

We will discuss novel approaches to prevention and treatment, as well as the increasing potential of personalised medicine. You will also carry out a research project in one of these areas.

What is this course about?

There has been a growing demand for Strength and Conditioning practitioners outside of professional sport structures, with the increasing professionalisation of amateur sports such as the GAA. The 'fitness trainer' of a decade ago that tended to be assume sole responsibility for the physical conditioning of inter-county Gaelic football and hurling/camogie teams, has now been replaced by 'Strength and Conditioning teams'. There is also a pattern of Strength and Conditioning practitioners working closely with special populations (paediatric & seniors), physiotherapists, sports rehabilitators and athletic therapists in both prevention and rehabilitation of athletes to return them to performance from injury. This new two year part-time programme will provide an opportunity for students to study for a MSc in Strength and Conditioning, corresponding to a Level 9 Qualification (90 ECTS credits). The overall aim of the programme is to provide an intellectually challenging applied postgraduate programme of study that will give graduates advanced knowledge, understanding and practical coaching skills in Strength and Conditioning. This will enable them to work with both elite athletes and specialist population groups. Graduates of the programme will be eligible to apply for membership to the Irish Institute of Sport (IIS), United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) based in the United States of America.

Programme Details:
The first part of the programme is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and analytical techniques in the sub-disciplines of Advanced Resistance Training, Explosive Conditioning, Metabolic Conditioning, Sports Nutrition and Periodisation. With the primary emphasis on preparing athletes and players for optimum sports performance, these modules combine more advanced theoretical and practical elements of Strength and Conditioning, providing students with the skillls to operate as a Strength and Conditioning Practitioner in a sports performance environment. The elective options of the programme provide the opportunity for students to develop further specialist skills; ranging from Injury Rehabilitation and Reconditioning and High Performance Testing, to the emerging fields of Strength and Conditioning for paediatric and geriatric population groups. Students who elect to complete the full MSc programme will also undertake a Research Project in a relevant field of study that will hone their research and analytical skills.

What follow-on study opportunities are available?
Students who successfully complete 60 credits of the programme will be eligible for the Postgraduate Diploma in Science (Level 9) should they opt to leave the programme Embedded Exit Award).

- Candidates with significant experience in the Rehabilitation/Sport Science field (as determined by Recognition of Prior Learning), in addition to an Honours Primary Degree in another discipline area may also be considered for entry.

Programme Aims

The aims of the programme are:

‌•To equip the students with a broadened and deepened knowledge based and skills, and enable them to meet the changing clients’ needs and contribute to the development of occupational therapy practices; and

Programme Characteristics

This programme is designed in response to demand from members of occupational therapy profession to keep abreast of contemporary practices and issues. It aims to equip students with a range of advanced clinical and research skills. The main focus will be using modern clinical applications and research-driven teaching. ‌•Explain the principles involved in measurement and instrumentation.

Teaching/learning method:
Self-directed learning. Each student will be assigned a supervisor and required to complete a team project. A study plan (learning contract) will be formulated in the beginning of the study, according to the interest of the student and the supervisor.
