Teaching

The theory aspect of this programme is delivered in three block weeks at the University at the start of each semester. You also work with an identified consultant surgeon mentor in the field of cardiothoracic, general or orthopaedic surgery.

You are taught through five one-week study blocks in Year 1, and three one-week study blocks in Year 2. We use a variety of teaching methods in conjunction with practice-based learning in your workplace.

You are assessed through a variety of methods including practice-based competencies, a viva voce and written case studies.

Employability

On completion you are qualified as an SCP in cardiothoracic, general or orthopaedic surgery. These courses enable you to access a second specialist module independently, or progress to complete an MSc.

The PgDip and MSc in Practical Dermatology is for practising General Practitioners or other practising doctors who regularly deal with patients with dermatological problems.

The distance learning course aims to enable doctors to successfully manage dermatological problems in patients presenting to their surgeries. It is a highly interactive, online programme designed to equip the general practitioner with a sound understanding of skin disease as it presents in practice.

Students are expected to use their individual study time to complete the modular learning material, which is available online, and complete further reading from dermatology text books and searches for material in journal articles and libraries. The success of the course therefore depends, to a large extent, on the input and enthusiasm of course participants.

The course holds both UK and international accreditation, including from the Royal College of General Practitioners, Hong Kong College of Family Physicians and Hong Kong Medical Association. 

Structure

• PgDip:

All students must register initially for the Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip).

The PgDip course lasts for one academic year for full-time students or two years for part-time students, and consists of six 20-credit modules, totalling 120 credits, at Level 7.

Students who have not obtained 120 credits, but have obtained a minimum of 60 credits at Level 7, including any ‘required core modules’, will be eligible for the exit award of Postgraduate Certificate.

• MSc:

The MSc course consists of one (dissertation) stage, lasting for 12 months (part-time).

The MSc dissertation stage will include a formative 10-week block of online study to develop study and research skills, and completion of a dissertation of 60 credits at Level 7, to achieve a total of at least 180 credits, including the 120 credits from the Cardiff University Postgraduate Diploma in Practical Dermatology, to complete the MSc programme.

The dissertation, which will normally be of not more than 20,000 words and supported by such other material as may be considered appropriate to the subject, embodies the results of a period of project work.  The subject of each your dissertation will be approved by the Chair of the Board of Studies concerned or his/her nominee.

Teaching

The course is delivered entirely online via Cardiff University’s virtual learning environment (VLE), Learning Central, allowing regular, rapid and efficient communication between colleagues, tutors and course administrators, reducing the isolation commonly associated with distance learning.

Through dedicated online tutorial support, discussion forums and online assessments, students become members of an enthusiastic and supportive online community of doctors with an interest in dermatology. This environment allows collaboration, both academic and clinical, which can extend beyond the life of the programme.

Assessment

Each module will be assessed by written work, objective structured tests/questions and online activities.

Students are not required to be called for a viva voce examination.

The MSc requires formal assessment in the form of a 20,000 word dissertation to achieve the MSc in Practical Dermatology.

There is a general pathway and a leadership pathway – the latter requires you to focus on modules and a dissertation related to educational leadership and management.

Course participants come from across educational phases (early years to HE) and between educational sectors (schools, museums, colleges and universities, and educational consultancies). Delivery

Most students complete these part time courses over three years, although some enter with PGCE (or other) Masters level credits and can complete more quickly. It is recommended that you complete 60 credits per year.

Modules are selected according to your professional development interests. They are taught in a number of ways to accommodate part-time study. For example some are taught on Saturdays, some during half-term holidays, and some are scheduled for afternoons and evenings.

Teaching is fairly intense, and the learning from the modules extends into practical and reflective engagement with the workplace.

Assessed work requires you to use both reflective and enquiry-based techniques in your own professional context to construct a portfolio.

The final year is the dissertation, which is supported by supervision. It provides an opportunity for you to conduct bespoke research related to your professional and academic interests.

A matrix of assessments is used to ensure the fitness of your studies for practice purpose.
Work-based learning is a key feature of your pathway. Practice is not advanced unless it can be seen to be applied to practice for the good of your patients and your staff.

This matrix includes a variety of formative and summative assessment tools. For example,case-based discussion helps improve your clinical judgement; mini clinical evaluation exercises develop your diagnostic, history-taking and examination skills; case logs and case summaries to help you reflect on your diagnostic work-ups and clinical decision-making in practice; and multi-source feedback tools to enhance your patient centred focus. A variety of other assessment tools are used in other modules. These include the traditional examination for advanced pathophysiology, a clinical skills examination for the advanced physical assessment skills module, oral presentations and traditional written assignments for the nursing-focused modules.

Employability

There are many opportunities for nurse practitioners in the new NHS as a result of the General Medical Services contract; the European working directive and practice-based commissioning. Wherever nurse practitioners work they have repeatedly demonstrated reliable, high-quality, cost-effective care to patients.
Nurse practitioners have improved the quality of care of the patient journey. And they have reduced service costs (in some instances up to 50 per cent).

About Medway School of Pharmacy

Medway School of Pharmacy is one of the few regional schools of pharmacy in the UK, a collaboration between the University of Kent and the University of Greenwich.

This group has laboratories with dedicated state-ofthe art drug delivery, nanotechnology, spectroscopy, chromatography and organic synthesis facilities. It brings together researchers in medicinal chemistry and drug design, nanotechnology and materials science, drug delivery and pharmaceutics encouraging a multidisciplinary approach to research. Research covers synthesis and biological evaluation of potential anti-cancer agents, structurebased drug design, QSAR predication of ADMET properties, controlled release, particle engineering, powder technology, pharmaceutical technology, and novel drug delivery systems, with a focus on respiratory drug delivery.

Biological sciences
This group is housed in recently refurbished laboratories with dedicated state-of-the-art molecular biological, electrophysiological, tissue culture and microscopy facilities. The research is divided into four main themes; infectious diseases and allergy; neuroscience; renal and cardiovascular physiology; and pharmacology. Examples of current work include: investigation of the use of non-pathogenic virus ‘pseudotypes’ to study pathogenic RNA, study of the properties of neuronal potassium channels and their modulation and the development of new therapies for patients that have developed acute kidney injury in collaboration with a major pharmaceutical company.

Pharmacy practice
This group conducts research in two areas: public health and medicines optimisation, with a particular focus on cardiovascular diseases and mental health. Work in public health includes studies in physical exercise, alcohol, cardiovascular screening and spirometry testing, plus pharmacovigilance. Studies in medicines optimisation include work in dementia, bipolar disorder and stroke, with an emphasis on the patient perspective.

Careers

This programme provides progression for pharmacists towards advanced practitioner status.

Completion of the practice elements of the course leads to the award of the Certificate of Completion of General Pharmacist Training from an accredited training centre.

The programme is informed by recent work to clarify professional career pathway stages and competencies for advanced practice in primary care. The programme covers core competencies relating to advanced practice including: direct clinical competence as a generalist, leadership and collaborative practice, improving quality and developing practice, and developing self and others.

The programme aims to develop expert generalists who are able to provide accessible, first contact preventive care, and diagnosis and management of acute and long term conditions. It produces practitioners who are able to work well within a skill-mix team to develop a responsive and effective person-centred primary care. The programme facilitates the development of a portfolio of competencies across clinical areas.

Course outline

We provide a challenging and flexible learning environment for registered nurses to develop in community specialist practice. As well as a broad knowledge in relation to public health, you'll develop specialist skills in aspects such as health assessment, clinical care and case management. This course will last 40 weeks at full time study or 80 weeks part time.

Our course is half theory, half practice, facilitated in an area specific to your subject. There will also be opportunities to gain alternative practice experience in another relevant setting during the course - you will be encouraged to undertake five days alternative placement to provide a wide perspective of General Practice Nursing. Students are also actively encouraged to work with other health professionals to enhance their knowledge and understanding.

Graduate destinations

Successful completion of the course will allow you to apply for the NMC Nursing register, recording this qualification as a V100 Community Practitioner Nurse Prescriber. This will enable you to work as in General Practice Nursing and progress to work as a team leader in your field.

If you wish to take your learning further, you could use your qualification to study at a Masters level.

Other admission requirements

If you apply for this course you must be current on the NMC Nursing register and you will need to provide evidence of study at level 5/6 within the last five years or complete an approved study skills course.

You will be interviewed for selection for this programme. The interview panel may include Trust staff, employers, mentors/practice teachers and university staff. During the interview you will be offered advice on the suitability of the award dependent on factors such as recent evidence of prior learning, and your personal and professional development needs.

You will need support from a NHS Health Trust or your employer and be able to secure a placement in your chosen area of practice, with access to a Practice Teacher. You will need to have completed a Disclosure Baring Service clearance, and this will be checked prior to your commencement on the course.

If you work in Cumbria, Lancashire or Blackpool areas, you may be eligible to apply for a place on the programme funded and supported by one of the local NHS Trusts. The NHS Trusts advertise places on the programme each year through NHS Jobs usually in spring/early summer. We advise you to contact your local NHS Health Trust and ask to speak with the manager for the specialist pathway that you are interested in, in order to express your interest and discuss opportunities.

Occasionally students self-fund a place on this programme. However, you will still need to talk to the relevant manager in your local NHS Health Trust in order to ask if they can provide you with a placement and a mentor/practice teacher in the relevant field of practice.

If you live further afield, you are able to undertake the programme with us if you can organise a practice placement with a mentor or practice teacher in the relevant field of practice. Your local NHS Health Trust will be able to advise you as to whether this is possible.

The General Pharmacy Practice PGDip is a Kent, Surrey and Sussex (KSS) Foundation Programme that helps you as a newly qualified pharmacist to consolidate your knowledge and skills in a professional environment.

It comprises a total of three work placements and teaches further academic background to clinical practice. The curriculum is developed through the work of the Joint Programmes Board (JPB), a collaboration of universities across London and the south-east.

The course qualifies you not only for the PGDip but also for an NHS Statement of Completion of General Pharmacist Training.

Course structure

The course is split into two stages: Foundation Stage 1 (which qualifies you for the PGCert) and Foundation Stage 2 (which qualifies you for the PGDip).

The educational aims of the curriculum are to develop general skills, knowledge, competencies and attitudes to ensure the highest professional performance and conduct. Practice activities are a required component of the course and all students will undertake these activities under the guidance of an accredited practice tutor.

Foundation Stage 1 (PGCert)

The first stage lasts approximately 18 months and consists of one module: Practitioner Development and Establishment of Professional and Clinical Practice. This is primarily completed in the workplace but also involves occasional study days.

You can defer stage 2 after the completion of stage 1 if you want some time out in between. You can restart at any time so long as you finish the degree within six years of registration.

Foundation Stage 2 (PGDip)

The second stage lasts approximately one year and is comprised of two modules, each in a defined area of practice. It prepares you for work as a band 7 pharmacist.

Our MSc Advanced General Dental Practice course is aimed at dentists who want to enhance their skills and knowledge as a general dental practitioner.

Taking this course will enable you to confidently manage more complex cases on a day-to-day basis, while the research component will help you to take an evidence-based approach to decision-making and treatment planning.

Most of the course is delivered online on a part-time basis, enabling you to fit study around your other commitments. You will have a wide range of units to choose from, tailoring the course to your own interests.

There are also some hands-on elements to help develop your practical clinical skills. These take place at your own practice and Ordsall Dental Health Centre. Skills development will also take place at facilities within the University.

Teaching and learning

This course is mainly online distance learning with attendance at clinical and clinical skills sessions.

We employ a diverse range of teaching methods, including seminars to introduce and facilitate in-depth understanding of key course concepts, as well as peer-to-peer and staff-to-student feedback and discussion through group work.

Additional, self-directed learning enables you to reflect upon your clinical work, skills and key concepts introduced within seminars.

Tutorials will use a problem-based format to help you develop communication and presentation skills, as well as appreciate the relevance of scientific study to clinical practice.

We will also provide you with a foundation in research skills and methodologies to prepare you for further research or to pursue a clinical academic career. This complements the research project and dissertation, where you will have the opportunity to demonstrate the collation and presentation of information in this field.

The varied blend of training methods aims to promote a stimulating and dynamic teaching environment. Inherent within the course is the expectation that you will acquire the skills to enable you to work independently and effectively in an interdisciplinary clinical environment.

Coursework and assessment

Formal assessment for the Research Methods, Biostatistics and CPD components takes the form of two tutor-marked assignments per unit.

For the clinical skills component, assessment is through examination of a variety of skills procedures carried out in the skills facility.

For the clinical component, case reflection and presentation, assessment is through a combination of written reports (reflective case presentations) and viva voce or oral presentation.

Clinical Pharmacy for General Practice:
NHS England has recently announced their intention to invest £15 million pounds to pilot patient facing roles for clinical pharmacists in GP practices. This is a clear sign of that pharmacists are recognised as health professionals who are able to support patients in the management of long term conditions e.g. by optimising medicines. These roles offer exciting opportunities for pharmacists to develop in this area of practice. . If you wish to work in general practice, it is likely that you will need to be working towards or hold a postgraduate pharmacy qualification that includes Independent Prescribing.
Our new postgraduate pathway 'Clinical Pharmacy for General Practice' allows you to combine your choice of modules from across our Community Pharmacy, Advanced Professional Practice and Prescribing Studies programmes (including the Independent Prescribing course) to meet your own personal learning needs whilst working towards a Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or Masters award.

Advanced Professional Practice (Pharmacy):
The Pharmacy pathway is compatible with the emerging agenda for Advanced and Specialist Practice within the Pharmacy profession and supports the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Faculty Professional Recognition Scheme. The Open learn pathway of the APP programme is designed to allow pharmacists and other health professionals, particularly medical and non-medical prescribers working in primary care, choice and flexibility in their progression to Certificate, Diploma and Masters awards to meet their specific professional development needs and advance their professional practice. Pharmacists can choose modules from across the Department of Medicines Management/School of Pharmacy postgraduate programmes’ portfolio, including Community Pharmacy and Clinical (Hospital) Pharmacy.
Pharmacists, medical and nonmedical prescribers can choose modules from the Prescribing Studies programme, including the Independent Prescribing Preparatory Course for Pharmacists, and also modules provided by other Schools within the Faculty of Health, and other Faculties within the University, subject to meeting the specific entry criteria required for individual modules.

Keele's Pg Advanced Professional Practice Programme aims to:

A total of 60 credits is required to achieve the Certificate award, 120 credits for the Diploma and 180 credits for the MSc. The Independent Prescribing Preparatory Course for Pharmacists module (60 credits) from the Prescribing Studies programme may only be used towards a Diploma award.

Achievement of the Master’s award requires you to complete the Professional MSc year. The professional MSc year consists of three compulsory modules: Advanced Practice Development (15 credits), Researching and Evaluating your Practice (15 credits) and the Independent Learning Project (30 credits).

MSc in Advanced Professional Practice (Pharmacy):
This pathway links to all the clusters of the Advanced Pharmacy Framework (APF) (http://www.rpharms.com/faculty-resources/advanced-pharmacy-framework.asp) You will study modules to allow you to develop in all six clusters of the APF: Expert Professional Practice; Collaborative Working Relationships; Leadership; Management; Education, Training and Development; and Research and Evaluation.

The Advanced Professional Practice Programme is designed principally for distance-learning. We provide mainly online distance-learning materials so that you can study where and when it is most convenient for you. Our methods of delivery allow us to revise and update the course quickly to meet your changing needs as a pharmacist.

Students on the 'Pharmacy' Pathway will be required to attend Keele for occasional face to face study days. Students on the 'Open Learn' pathway maybe required to attend Keele, depending on their module choices.

The Advanced Professional Practice Programme is fully supported by a team of experienced, friendly, and approachable academic, administrative and technical staff based at Keele. You’re not on your own! And, don’t forget the network of other pharmacists on the course whom you can contact.

You will require the equivalent of 1-2 days (approximately 10-15 hours) each week to complete your course. Remember that the online nature of our course materials, and the fact that a good proportion of the assessed work focuses on your daily practice, means that you can integrate study and work.

Assessment is entirely by coursework for the Certificate, Diploma and MSc courses. A variety of assessment methods are used such as Practice-Based Assignments that will assess your knowledge, problem-solving skills, and data interpretation skills in relation to application of knowledge to practice, patient care and medicines management. Case Presentations assess your ability to critically appraise the literature and relate published theory to everyday practice. An Audit Project, Practice-Based Assignments, Project Protocol Development and the Independent Study Project Report assess ‘thinking’ and practical skills, and your ability to plan, conduct and report on an investigation. They also assess your ability to critically appraise the literature and relate published theory to everyday practice. Your Reflective Portfolio also assesses your ability to relate theory to practice, and self evaluation of, and reflection on, your own performance and CPD needs.

The nature of the assessments develops your written and oral communication skills. Practical skills and key life/transferable skills are assessed within the methods described above. Each method of assessment is supported by clear criteria for marking; these are explained in the relevant Course Handbooks. The minimum pass mark is 50%.

The summative assessment is supported by a variety of formative assessment activities that include online discussions, formative feedback on elements of the reflective portfolio, contributions to study days and feedback on draft proposals.

Additional Costs

For all programmes you will need regular access to a computer, email and the internet. However apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for our postgraduate programmes, with the exception of those listed below.

Some modules may require that you attend a Webinar. You may find it beneficial to purchase a headset to participate in webinars, however this is not essential if your computer has a built in microphone and speakers.

Some modules may require that you travel to Keele for a study day. There will be additional travel and accommodation costs (if required) to attend any face to face study days.

Study Days
