Gain the essential skillsets as a nutritionist to help improve people’s health and well-being in the context of the malnutrition, obesity, metabolic response to injury and chronic disease.

This was the first MSc in Clinical Nutrition to be established in the UK and has gained an international reputation, attracting students from around the world. You will consider the patient’s journey from birth to extreme age in the context of the metabolic response to injury or to chronic disease. The course is designed for all members of nutrition support teams and is also suitable for students who wish to pursue clinically-based nutrition research.

After establishing a firm foundation in physiology and the biochemistry of nutrition, this course will cover the nutritional management for clinical conditions such as gastro-enteral problems, long-term disablement and intensive care. It also includes a focus on nutrition support in paediatric, adult, older adult and critically ill patients.

This course is perfect for nutrition support teams or those who want to pursue a career or a doctorate in clinically-based nutrition. The course will provide an important insight into contemporary developments in clinical nutrition for a wide range of healthcare professionals.

You will have access to our state-of-the art facilities and excellent laboratories including a food lab complete with sensory analysis tasting booths and specialist laboratories for physiology, microbiology and computing.

Please note this programme does not lead to a qualification in the UK as a registered Dietitian. It is an accredited course with the Association for Nutrition, and does enable you to become a registered nutritionist, once you have complete two years in the nutrition field.

Content

We offer a diverse range of modules to build your knowledge and enable you to focus on topics that interest you. Recent examples of these topics have included: macronutrient and micronutrient metabolism in health and disease, nutrient digestion and absorption and gastrointestinal disease, nutritional support in paediatric, adult, older adult and critically ill patients, the effect of disease on nutrition status.

Research areas that are also included in the programme are dietary management strategies in women with polycystic ovary syndrome; the role of brain–gut interaction in obesity, eating disorders, and irritable bowel syndrome; the role of the enteric nervous system in known intestinal diseases; vitamin E status in health and disease; the role of microbiota in food and nutritional systems; food bioactives for a healthy gut, brain and vascular system; the regulation of insulin secretion and glucose metabolism in health and diabetes.

Our MSc Veterinary Microbiology programme, run in partnership with local world-leading veterinary research institutes (Pirbright, APHA and VMD), offers an in-depth understanding of veterinary infectious diseases and global issues such as AMR, and their associated impact on man.

It offers specialist practical training in the diagnosis of important viral and bacterial diseases of global animal and human health importance.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

This programme is intended for those who wish to enhance their understanding of the role of microorganisms in animal health and disease, and provides an excellent grounding in molecular biology, immunology, epidemiology and microbiology.

This grounding leads into the study of the complex mechanisms of host/microbe interactions that are involved in the pathogenesis of specific animal diseases, and provides insights into diagnosis and interventions, such as vaccines, essential for disease control.

You will enhance your critical and analytical skills and gain hands-on experience in the diagnosis of veterinary diseases, such that you may identify problems, formulate hypotheses, design experiments, acquire and interpret data, and draw conclusions.

WHO IS THE PROGRAMME FOR?

This is a full or part-time programme, intended mainly for graduates, those already working in veterinary diagnostic/research laboratories and staff from other laboratories who want to enhance their understanding of the role of microorganisms in animal health and disease.

Pharmaceutical research personnel, policymakers, veterinarians, public health personnel and environmental biologists will also benefit.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

This is a one year full-time programme aimed at preparing graduates to work in a range of fields in which a detailed understanding of veterinary microbiology is a valuable asset.

These fields include research, commerce, government and policy, reference laboratory and diagnostic work, epidemiology and disease mapping, veterinary science, farming especially animal production, wild and zoo animal conservation and education.

As such, it is intended that graduates will achieve the highest levels of professional understanding of veterinary microbiology within a range of contexts.

The programme combines the study of the theoretical foundations of, and scholarly approaches to, understanding the application and various practices of veterinary microbiology within the contexts described above along with the development of practical and research skills.

The main aims are to enable students to:
-Acquire sound knowledge of the major principles of veterinary microbiology
-Develop the skills to perform relevant interpretation and evaluation of data
-Apply those acquired skills in practice through research
-To utilise acquired knowledge and evaluative skills to communicate successfully with stakeholders

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, skills, qualities and other attributes in the following areas.

The learning outcomes have been aligned with the descriptor for qualification at level 7 given in the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ) produced by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education.

-The main principles of current veterinary microbiology
-The methods and approaches used for the molecular characterisation, and diagnosis of disease agents
-The main principles of infectious diseases epidemiology
-The analysis of disease and disease carriage that impact on the development and application of control measures to combat diseases

-The various aspects of host pathology and immune responses to disease agents
-Analytical skills to allow interpretation of data and formulation of conclusions

-Critically appraise scholarly and professional writing on a wide range of subjects pertaining to the various aspects of veterinary microbiology
-Critically analyse experimental data to enable the formulation of hypotheses
-Design relevant experiments to test formulated hypotheses
-Efficiently analyse new developments in technology and critically assess their utilisation to answer existing and new problems

-Plan and execute an experiment/investigation, act autonomously and demonstrate originality
-Analyse numerical data using appropriate computer tools including specialist computer packages
-Communicate experiments at a project level, including report writing

The MSc Diagnostic Imaging programme aims to enhance students’ professional development enabling them to become leaders in advancing diagnostic imaging practice.

Our programme develops advanced skills, such as critical thinking, evidence based practice and research and leadership, providing the skills to effect change based on best and current practice. Building on current knowledge and clinical experience, students will gain an insight of advancing practices.

Students will be expected to use their learning to inform professional discussion and debate. Our teaching team consists of academic experts and clinical specialists, ensuring our content is relevant, current and evidence based. Students can choose to study on the broad based MSc Diagnostic Imaging Programme or on one of our defined area of practice optional pathways; MSc Diagnostic Imaging (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and MSc Diagnostic Imaging (Medical Ultrasound).

Many of our graduates have gone on to secure promoted positions in management and areas of advancing practice, others have continued to doctorate study.

Optional Pathway: Medical Ultrasound Studies

For those who have an interest in Medical Ultrasound, the MSc Diagnostic Imaging programme offers a pathway of study to gain theoretical knowledge of the physical principles and an understanding of the clinical application. Our teaching team consists of academic experts and clinical specialists, ensuring our content is relevant, current, and evidence based. Our state-of-the-art simulation facilities (Medaphor scan trainers) and sonographic equipment allow opportunities to develop and rehearse practical scanning skills and gain feedback on ability.

The programme aims to enable practitioners, normally from outside the UK, to achieve the knowledge and understanding needed to develop their current practice further or to pursue a career in ultrasound*.

*This programme does not assess nor certify competency to practice in the field of medical ultrasound.

Students on the medical ultrasound studies pathway will follow the module structure given under the MSc Diagnostic Imaging Programme Description, substituting the Advancing Practices in Imaging 2 module with:

Principles of Practice in Medical Ultrasound (30 credits) - Here the students will learn the underpinning theory of ultrasound production, safe & effective practice, patient care, nomenclature, reporting skills, litigation, ethics and image optimisation.

Assessment Methods

A range of assessment methods are used that are appropriate to the content and mode of delivery of each module. These include examinations, written assignments, reflective portfolio, oral and/or poster presentations.

Teaching Methods

We use a blended learning approach including key note lectures, tutorials, workshops simulation, case-studies, student led seminars, e-learning, and self-directed study. Active participation in the learning is essential, both as an individual and as part of a group.

Employment Opportunities

Many of our graduates have gone on to secure promoted positions in management, gastro-intestinal advanced practice, MRI research, and sonographer-led ultrasound services.
