The emphasis is on games design, art and animation, and will also develop the fundamentals of computer programming, entrepreneurship/business, and your own practice. The computer games and interactive entertainment business is a fast-growing multi-billion dollar worldwide business, with games platforms from handhelds and mobiles including iPhones, iPads and Android phones, through consoles such as the Playstation 4, Xbox One and Nintento Wii U, to PCs and massively-multiplayer online games involving tens of thousands of people.

This MA will produce graduates who are well-positioned to have a career in this exciting worldwide industry, meeting the strong demand for graduate computer games designers and artists in the UK and abroad. The programme is delivered by a mix of professionals from the games and effects industries and from the research world.

This MA builds on the success of the MSc in Computer Games and Entertainment, and will develop your skills in game design, art and animation. You'll have the opportunity to work with students from this industry-recognised programme on placements and final projects. Through these creative collaborations with artists, games designers and developers we hope that many exciting and innovative projects will emerge. You will develop the skills needed for the design and management of innovative business models, drawing on the latest research and industry-leading practice from the Advanced Services Group; the centre of excellence in research and practice on servitization and advanced services.

You will develop a knowledge and understanding of services innovation, through the study of business model innovation, business analytics, management consultancy, digital strategy and gamification. Informed by industry needs and current research, this course blends specific knowledge in services innovation and a range of professional skills. Methods of teaching include lectures and seminars. Roll7 is a New Cross-based indie video games developer and has been offering placements to Goldsmiths MSc Games students for three years. Roll7 is just about to release its first console title OlliOll, exclusively for PSVita, and we are looking for another 1 or 2 Goldsmiths programming interns for 2014 to work on a Sony backed PS4/Vita cross-play title.

Structure

Final Project & Dissertation
During this final project, you will undertake a project towards your dissertation, typically over the Spring-Summer period (May to September). We offer three options to our students:

Individual research project:

This is based on a research theme selected by you and agreed upon by the lecturing team. Recent examples include:
Building a cheap kinect-like gesture tracking system
AI (rule-based) platform for game level design
Software development for our mobile technology projects (iPhone based)
Assessment
Mainly based on coursework (involving programming), essays, final project and dissertation; some lecturers may also conduct exams/quizzes.

Attendance

The taught programme is organised into three terms (full-time). The Autumn term runs from early October to mid-December, the Winter/Spring term from mid-January to the end of March, and the Summer term runs, typically, from late April to mid-September. Taught modules are given during the Autumn and Winter/Spring terms, while the Final Project takes place during a Summer term (in the second year for part-time students).

This programme is focused on providing you with the skills and experience needed to secure a job in the computer games industry.

Skills

You'll develop excellent games programming skills. These skills are highly transferrable, as games programming is viewed by other industries as being very demanding and requiring a high level of technical ability.

Careers

The global computer games industry is valued at 60 billion USD and is predicted to continuously grow in years to come. It's a mature industry with companies such as EA, Ubisoft, and Blizzard Activision giving long-term career prospects, shares, and benefits. There is a big skills shortage in this growing sector.

An innovative alternative to a MBA, this one-year, full-time course is designed for graduates of any subject with or without work experience. Case studies, live client projects, company visits and the option of paid work experience help prepare you for management by putting the latest academic thinking and business strategies into practice.

Teaching takes place over three terms, from late September to early June, with breaks after assessments in mid-December to early January and late March to mid-April.

Class attendance averages 14 to 18 hours a week, plus time for group work and independent study, with variations as you progress through the course. There are some special intensive workshops on topics such as leadership, management and research, and a one-week tutor-led international study visit to companies in another European country.

Your final project will take place over the summer after teaching finishes. Your optional work-experience based final project may continue for up to one-year past the end of teaching.

This programme equips you to use ICT to develop TESOL materials or deliver teaching.

You’ll discover e-learning first-hand through exposure to online learning and teaching methods, and gain practical experience of using ICT to develop learners’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

You’ll explore how people learn languages and examine language teaching strategies. Though you study the same core modules as students on other TESOL programmes, you’ll choose from optional modules that focus on the use of ICT in TESOL.

Taught by expert practitioners and researchers, MA TESOL and ICT will give you the skills and confidence to use ICT as a key asset in the classroom and has been designed for teachers, teacher trainers, language school directors, curriculum developers, inspectors, lecturers and materials writers.

Please be aware that this is not an IT skills training course, and we will expect you to have basic IT skills such as word processing, email and using the internet before you start the programme.

Course content

In semester one, you’ll deepen your understanding of TESOL. You’ll focus on how people learn languages, how to describe and explain language to learners and the approaches you can take to teaching reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

You’ll then expand your knowledge in semester two. You’ll choose from a range of optional modules that focus on the use of technology in language learning, covering topics such as digital learning environments, gamification, the factors affecting staff and student technology adoption, making digital materials and the theoretical basis of technology-enhanced language learning.

Throughout the year, you’ll use the knowledge and skills you gain to carry out a small-scale piece of research related to your own interests within education. You’ll submit this dissertation by the end of the year.

If you choose to study part-time, you’ll study over a longer period and take fewer modules in each year.

Learning and teaching

We use a range of teaching and learning methods including seminars, tutorials, group work and lectures. Specialist modules also use online learning to give you hands-on experience of using online teaching materials.

However, independent study is an important aspect of this programme, either alone or in a group, as it allows you to develop key research, analysis and communication skills and develop your own ideas.

Assessment

Most of our modules are assessed through written assignments. To help you prepare, you’ll be able to submit a draft to your tutor for comment beforehand, and we offer other forms of support as well. You’ll also complete group projects and project reports.

Smartphones and social media, digital networks and big data, gamification and mobile platforms – new media continue to change the way we live, work and communicate. This programme interrogates the impact of digital technologies on individuals and society, and provides you with the skills and knowledge to be able to think critically and creatively about new media.

Working both individually and in teams, you will learn about diverse digital media techniques and processes, including coding and hacking, web design, mapping and visualisation, scraping and mining, interactive narratives, animation, digital ethnography, action research, prototyping and iterative design, representation, and more. Through an applied, hands-on approach, you will gain an understanding of the social, cultural and economic roles of new media, and explore what it is like to work in the new media industries.

With a range of optional modules to choose from, you will also be able to expand your knowledge into areas such as multimedia journalism, cinema and photography, political and promotional communication, feminism and the media, and many more. Taught by expert practitioners and researchers, you will gain the knowledge and skills to thrive in this dynamic, fast-paced sector.Our School has a range of fantastic facilities to support your studies. The 58-seat Phil Taylor Cinema is equipped with Dolby Digital sound and high-definition projection facilities, as well as projectors for 16mm and 35mm film.

You can also work on your own projects in our 44 editing suites, equipped with Avid Media Composer editing software and Adobe Creative Cloud. The fully equipped TV studio also has a large green screen area, lighting and photo-flash facilities. We also have a track and dolly, sliders, Glidecam and various cranes, and you’ll have access to a new photographic dark room.

We also run a loans service where you can borrow a range of HD digital camcorders and various Canon stills cameras to help with your project work.

Course content

Depending on your previous experience, you may need to take the module New Media Production Skills to develop your knowledge of visual design software, HTML, CSS, PHP, WordPress, Javascript and animation. The module isn’t assessed so it will appear in your transcript, but won’t count towards your classification.

In each semester you’ll study core modules that build your knowledge of new media contexts and practice. You’ll consider the relationship between new media and contemporary culture and the interactive forms and practices that are emerging. Then you’ll gain practical production, project management and critical skills and respond to new media briefs in collaborative projects.

You’ll then have the chance to broaden your approach with your choice of optional modules, from photography and cinematics to political communication, television narratives and public relations in society.

To demonstrate the skills you’ve gained, you’ll also undertake a major independent project. You can choose to submit a dissertation and take classes on research methods throughout the year, or you can work on a sustained, practical new media project with a written element.

If you choose to study part-time, you’ll complete the MA over two years, instead of one, taking fewer modules each year.

As a student of Information Science, you learn to transfer data into accessible and intelligible information. You will do research in the domain of language, text and computer-mediated communication.

In this programme, you will analyse information and communication processes between individuals and within organizations. One question is crucial: what options do new technological developments offer to improve information and communication processes?

The Master's programme builds on the knowledge, insights and skills that you have acquired in your Bachelor's degree. You will learn to carry out research independently and handle information in a professional manner. In addition to courses, you will do an internship. You will finish the degree with an independent research project and a Master's thesis.

All courses are taught in English. Deficiency programs are partly taught in Dutch.

Job perspectives

As a graduate, you can work as a web developer, software-engineer, IT-consultant, application developer, researcher or teacher. As part of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training Intelligent Games and Game Intelligence (IGGI) – a collaboration between Goldsmiths, the University of York, and the University of Essex – we are training the next generation of researchers, designers, developers and entrepreneurs in digital games.

Structure

The programme combines practical skills training with advanced teaching in cutting-edge research topics and the chance to contribute original research to a growing academic area.

- Students study a curriculum developed with input from an industry liaison panel, ensuring that the course content is up to date and meets the needs of employers.
- This curriculum covers a range of relevant computing disciplines including business IT, software development, security, web design, computer networking, big data analytics, user experience and mobile technologies.
- The Southampton Solent University campus hosts regular British Computer Society (BCS) professional development events.
- Graduates will be well prepared to pursue Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP), BCS agile and BCS software testing certifications.
- Learners have access to a range of professional software suites and state-of-the-art IT laboratories.

Southampton Solent University’s applied computing masters programme places a unique focus on graduate employability, focusing on developing the specific skills that industry employers are seeking.

One of the ways that the course team ensure the curriculum is achieving this goal is through regular consultations with an industry liaison panel. This panel advises the course team on the latest industry developments and the course content is changed accordingly.

These strong links with industry have provided previous School of Media Arts and Technology students with access to a range of work experience opportunities, case studies and guest lectures.

Computing students at Southampton Solent have the opportunity to use industry standard facilities throughout their studies. Our EC Council certified security and networking labs feature a wide variety of equipment from Cisco (including Cisco Packet Tracer), Fluke and HP, as well as high-fidelity simulation systems like the market-leading Opnet. Students also have free access to our devices lab, where they can test their web design projects on a variety of different computing devices.

Students are supported to develop a range of transferable skills throughout the course. These include project management, problem solving and analytical skills that empower students to work in a range of different industries after graduation. Teaching, learning and assessment -

With few formal lectures, most units are taught in small class-based sessions, usually in IT labs.

For the research and development project you will be assigned a project tutor, who will advise and support you.

Assessment -

The course is assessed through a mixture of coursework assignments, group work, videos, presentations, a project research paper and a final poster presentation.

Teaching -

The course’s teaching staff have a wide range of academic, research and professional experience that they bring to their teaching. Research interests include data mining, learning technologies, gamification, wireless systems, computer systems and OpenStreetMap applications.

Our facilities -

During your studies you will learn to build information systems using a variety of professional-grade software packages. You will also have access to our state-of-the-art IT laboratories; depending on your choice of options you may have access to our specialised network security laboratory or usability lab with eye-tracking facilities.

You’ll have access to our devices lab, a special test area integrated with our existing software development spaces. The devices lab consists of a range of the latest mobile devices mounted on flexible tethers, allowing you to test your websites and apps on real equipment.
