This course will give you the insight, ideas and skills needed to be an effective leader in arts fundraising. You'll explore topics such as the history of philanthropy, cultural diplomacy, how to manage change, how to build resilience, and how to instil values into fundraising and development activity.
This course is led and co-ordinated by academic staff with significant industry experience, who are assisted by expert freelance tutors and senior arts consultants. Throughout, you'll reflect critically on your work-based learning and learn how to apply relevant theories to your everyday professional practice.
In order to study on this course, you must have completed our Summer School - a week of intensive study and practical activity that provides further opportunities for strategic thinking and planning. This takes place at the 4* hotel and conference centre of Weetwood Hall, a fully modernised 16th century manor house set in nine acres of woodland and gardens located just 4 miles from Leeds city centre. This unique course was established in 2014 as part of the Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy Programme, funded by Arts Council England. It brings together a specialised team of academics and practitioners who approach key issues of arts fundraising and leadership from a range of historical, theoretical and practical perspectives. The course also offers access to a wide range of relevant case studies, and is supported by sector-leading online resources which will help you to develop your critical thinking and analytical writing.
This course explores the history of arts and cultural philanthropy. It investigates underlying cultural policy models and debates, and situates arts fundraising within the broader fields of arts marketing and cultural management, whilst exploring the relative utility of strategic management tools, models and principles for leading contemporary arts organisations. The programme critically applies relevant concepts and theories pertaining to cultural entrepreneurship, change management and cultural leadership, and explores the challenges of implementing these ideas in evolving practices of arts fundraising.
The two modules that make up this course are taught in different ways. The Arts Fundraising and Leadership module takes the form of a Summer School, where you'll be taught through a balanced mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials, panel discussions, group activities, individual project work and group presentations. In addition, interactive panels and visits to nearby arts organisations provide a unique opportunity for participants to listen to, question and network with a range of senior arts leaders. The Professional Practice module is delivered online through dedicated webinars and tutorials, as well as individual online supervision.
The Arts Fundraising and Leadership module is assessed through a group presentation (30%) and an individual essay (70%). The Professional Practice module is assessed via an extended reflective work-based learning report.

The physical remains of our past – buildings, landscapes, city streets, archives, artefacts and archaeological sites – along with the intangible associations of tradition, language and memory continue to shape our lives. However, the ways we understand and manage ‘heritage’ are changing rapidly.
We’ll challenge you to think about what heritage means, help you to set heritage management in its social, political and economic context. We'll give you the chance to apply your understanding through a range of research and practice-based projects with our regional, national and international partners.
You’ll explore how heritage sites are managed, presented and explained. We’ll teach you to consider their value beyond something to see or a place to visit.
In trimester one, you will explore changing and contested ideas about the nature of heritage. Examine the social, political, and economic context in which heritage is defined and managed, and consider the best of current practice through a series of workshops. These are led by some of the best professionals in the sector, many of whom will continue to offer you support and advice.
In trimester two, you will plan and undertake an independent research project, which allows you to ask key questions about an aspect of current practice which most inspires or concerns you. In parallel with this, you will complete a 25 day placement with one of our many partners in the sector.
In trimester three, you'll complete an extended piece of research through a dissertation or to design and deliver a new project in collaboration with a heritage site, museum, archive or community group, or to work with artists and teachers, health professionals and developers.

We deliver much of the course through intensive workshops, often run by leaders in their own field in the heritage sector. These are complemented by guest lectures, offering you the chance to become involved in thinking about major heritage issues as they develop, and by the sessions which you run for the group, as you develop your own expertise.
You’ll be assessed through a mix of project work, formal essays, reports and a final dissertation or project. For a final project you could produce a film, develop a website, or prepare learning materials. Alternatively, a more traditional dissertation might lead you to further research and a PhD.

Careers in the heritage sector include collections management; education and learning; exhibition planning and implementation; community engagement and outreach; and marketing and fundraising. We also cater for people interested in the voluntary sector, social enterprises, fundraising, and a wide range of administrative and management roles.

Within a rapidly changing domestic and international environment, the work of arts and cultural managers is becoming more complex and significant. The creative industries are growing rapidly and patterns of cultural work are changing. Cultural organisations and festivals are in a period of fundamental, pervasive and long-term change; managers must deal with a host of dramatic, often contradictory demands and challenges. This leads to a situation where there is a need for graduates with more holistic and integrated perspectives regarding the management of cultural organisations and the political, economic, social and environmental conditions in which they function.
This course has been developed in response to this need and is rooted in a belief that great leaders in the cultural sector will recognise the value of management while acknowledging that approaches may need to be adapted to meet the particularities of cultural organisations and festivals. Through encouraging you to become critically reflective, the course will develop your knowledge of the contemporary issues affecting the management of arts organisations and festivals while equipping you with the practical management skills that are essential for developing a career in the field.
Mindful of the need for students to develop vocational skills, a number of assignments are orientated towards developing the knowledge and skills required to become an effective practitioner in the field. In addition, students are required to arrange and undertake practical experience within cultural organisations to complement their studies.
This MA is designed as a conversion degree and we welcome applicants from non-business related subjects. It is suitable for both graduates who wish to add a vocational management emphasis to their first degree and those with equivalent professional qualifications or experience. It is likely to be of interest to those who studied the arts and humanities at undergraduate level or those with significant workplace experience who would like to gain a formal qualification in a flexible manner.
Teaching comprises a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies, simulation exercises, field trips and projects. You will also be required to arrange a period of industry based learning. Your performance on the course will be assessed by essays, reports, exams, presentations and a dissertation or project (MA only). Normally, there are around 30 to 35 students enrolling on the course each year.
Each module will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Most modules consist of two to three hours of class time each week of the semester. Where possible, all teaching takes place over two days per week. Your specific timetable will depend on whether you study full or part time. Flexible study options and a diverse curriculum mean that this course is suited to both those already working in the arts and those who are looking to start a career in the sector.
Part of our strength comes from our location; being based in Edinburgh means that the course has been developed over time in cooperation with key national cultural agencies and other bodies with a strategic interest in the development of arts organisations and festivals. Our location in the ‘festival city’ also allows for strong practical links between the course and the many arts, festival and cultural organisations based in and around Edinburgh, across Scotland and the UK.

The MA in Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies provides a rigorous theoretical and practical understanding of the field of international refugee law and forced migration. It is unique in being the only programme of its type offered by distance learning.
The MA degree will enable you to acquire a solid legal, practical and theoretical understanding of refugee protection and forced migration, developing expertise through a choice of elective modules. In the case of fundraising, for example, you could submit a funding bid that will be assessed by a tutor with significant practical experience in the grants and trusts sector.
Other modules on the course focus on asylum law and policy in specific regions of the world, such as Latin America and Africa or the European Union, whilst others focus on specific thematic issues such as statelessness, internal displacement, healthcare, gender and sexual identity.

This programme will cover sponsorship and marketing, audience development, regeneration and partnerships, and commerce/merchandise, giving a detailed insight into the ways that museums and galleries are managed and develop entrepreneurship.
Perhaps you already work in a museum or gallery and want some CPD experience. Or maybe you work in a different area but are thinking about a change of career.
Through a combination of lectures, seminars, outside visits, interviews, projects, workshops and presentations you'll examine the ways in which museum and gallery professionals have developed sophisticated new strategies and applied innovative entrepreneurial thinking to find ways of attracting visitors from a wide range of backgrounds to visit their institutions, engage with their events, and interact with art works in different ways.
Entrepreneurial thinking in museums and galleries is unique and cannot be viewed in the same way as a start-up business or new commercial venture. Instead it's a progressive way of developing commercial strands within the public sector. So you'll be encouraged to identify entrepreneurial activity, identify the target audiences for whom activities or resources have been developed, and the type of income raised.
The programme will use case studies of large-scale public/cultural projects like the Unilever series in Tate Modern's Turbine Hall, and the Fourth Plinth project in Trafalgar Square. Many of the sessions will take place in a museum or gallery (for example, Tate, the V&A, National Gallery), where you'll be able to carry out practical research. You'll also be able to meet and engage with potential professional contacts in different departments.

For your assessment you'll be asked to use all of your creative, entrepreneurial and research skills to 'create' a museum of your own. This programme builds on London's position as one of the most important musical centres in the world, with a diverse range of concert halls, theatres, cultural institutions and arts events that reflect its cosmopolitan and multicultural society.
Although professional management practice is a major element of the programme, the 'creative arts event' is the starting point for all teaching.
A music pathway has been added to the MA in Arts Administration and Cultural Policy, which is run by the Institute for Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship at Goldsmiths.
The MA introduces the key issues that concern the management of culture and in particular those within the performing arts.
