The MSc in Financial Analysis and Fund Management is a very challenging programme that offers students the opportunity to study for the level I and level II CFA® exams at the same time as the M.Sc. Financial Analysis and Fund Management.

The MSc in Financial Analysis and Fund Management is one of a limited number of programmes globally which has been awarded ‘Programme Partner’ Status by the CFA® institute, this means that the programme covers at least 70 per cent of the CFA® level I and II syllabus.

Run by the Xfi Centre for Finance and Investment, it is a twelve month full-time programme, and is designed for those wishing to learn fundamental and advanced theory in investment analysis.

Students on this programme will have access to a dedicated Thomson Reuters lab and in addition to Datastream and other financial databases and software systems.

All of the following are included in the fees for this programme;
- MSc Financial Analysis and Fund Management programme;
- The three-week induction and foundation programme;
- A coach trip to London to attend the CFA® Universities Open Day;

MSc Only Track

With the MSc Only Track, you are not required to register for the CFA® exams, or attend the workshops organised for those on the CFA® Track.

The absence of “investment” from the label does not mean you won’t be covering the financial and appraisal skills needed to work in fund management, banking or other areas of the investment industry.

This degree offers a choice of pathways, which you don’t have to choose between until your second term. If you are targeting the graduate-entry programmes of the London chartered surveying firms, one pathway gives you more UK-specific skills in law and taxation. If you are targeting jobs in investment, finance, development or expect to work outside the UK, the other pathway tilts toward more analytical skills and international markets.

The MSc in Real Estate opens up roles across the full range of our very diverse industry including surveyors, fund managers and banking for students with any previous degree.

If you aim to join the graduate entry programme of the major UK real estate employers and take the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence you can pick modules that tilt toward UK-specific topics in law, tax and applied valuation. If you aim to work in fund management, finance or outside the UK, you can tilt toward advance financial modelling and international markets. Either way, your choice will not pre-determine the jobs available to you. For all employers, a Masters from Cass is the most important thing, the mix of topics you have studied much less important.

Format

In our first term, you get get the portfolio of core skills that equip you to achieve that goal – taking in quantitative methods, investment appraisal, asset management and real estate economics.

In the second term, core module choices provide two learning “pathways”.

In term three, you pick a set of three elective topics from around six modules specific to real estate plus a range run by other Cass Masters programmes – some of them taught on trips to locations outside the UK. So you can focus on:

• Added core real estate topics like building management, sustainability, residential markets.
• Or on the investment aspects of the industry like REITs, real estate funds and portfolio construction.
• Or pick up on more general topics such as private equity and project management taught by experts from other Cass programmes.

And the last block of your course, the Business Research Project (BRP), is the one you design and build for yourself. It takes the form of a report of around 8,000 words submitted in August. We see the BRP as your opportunity to have a showpiece which shows potential employers what you know, what you can do, your ability to produce good-quality individual work.

Assessment

Assessment of modules on the MSc in Real Estate, in most cases, is by means of coursework and unseen examination. Coursework may consist of standard essays, individual and group presentations, group reports, classwork, unseen tests and problem sets. Please note that any group work may include an element of peer assessment.

In recent years, real estate students have been some of the most heavily recruited of all Cass MSc degrees because:

• From week one, we host recruitment visits from all the largest real estate employers – like CBRE, JLL, Cushman Wakefield, Savills – plus other firms in real estate fund management, development, finance.

The largest proportion of our students go on to the graduate entry schemes of major firms of chartered surveyors in the UK, going through the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence to become qualified professionals.

The others go into a very wide range of employers and roles – with smaller niche agencies, fund managers, developers, investment banks, lending banks, public agencies, rating agencies, research companies, not to mention setting up their own businesses. Many will go on to professional qualifications outside real estate, such as Chartered Financial Analyst Institute.

Around half our students come from outside the UK, many of them take up jobs in other countries with the boost that a degree from Cass, accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, is a widely recognised and highly valued qualification world-wide. And they will generally find Cass real estate alumni already there to form the base of their professional network.

Collaborative learning

The MSc in International Management & Law is designed to be a collaborative learning experience. It's a partnership between academic staff and students, and between students from different cultural backgrounds. Working together allows those involved to build upon their collective understanding in interrogating, at an advanced level, the global issues impacting organisations.

Course content

Semester 1
The MSc in International Management & Law begins with an introduction to the Management Development Programme. During this introduction, it's impressed on you that you're responsible for developing both your knowledge and skills and that you should approach your studies as active learners. This introduction is complemented by an Integrated Skills Workshop which focuses on your personal approach to learning and managing themselves.

The core Law class in the first semester is the Law of International Business. It introduces you to the concepts underpinning the regulation of businesses. It will explain the different types of business entities and introduce you to company and corporate law concepts.

In this semester the core International Management class is Managing Across Cultures. This class will help you develop an awareness, knowledge and understanding of the importance of the often overlooked 'soft skills' of management, particularly as concerns cross-cultural variations and their impact on the practices and processes of management. It'll examine the main concepts currently employed to understand the complexity presented to managers in their process of managing people across national and cultural borders, addressing the issues of the impact of culture on management structures and processes. It will then provide understanding of the role which cross-cultural management can play in achieving competitive advantage in international business.

Semester 2
The programme then leads into two core classes. The first is in International Management, namely Global Business Environment. This class is designed to inspire you with the platform of knowledge and understanding on the economic, institutional and socio-cultural contexts which form the background to International Management.

The core Law class is Comparative Law of Obligations. This will consider obligations law in the context of different constitutional arrangements around the world. It will include material on delict/torts, contract and restitution in countries including the UK, Australia, Canada, the EU, the USA and China and also some material on the law of obligations in the Islamic tradition.

Upon completion of the compulsory classes and towards the end of the taught programme, you choose elective classes, allowing you to explore a range of topics. Students enrolled on the MSc in International Management & Law will be able to choose classes from a shared pool of international, general management and law topics available.

Semester 3
The project class rounds off the programme in the third and final semester. This provides you with an opportunity to explore at length and in depth some aspects of theory or methods, knowledge or skills introduced on the taught element of the programme. The project is supported by a class in project methodology. At this stage of the programme you may be interested in aligning career aspirations with project work.

Learning & teaching

Modes of learning include lectures, seminars, workshops, case studies, expert guest lecturers, self-study exercises, project work, and individual study and research. Individual class specifications detail the objectives, learning outcomes and content for each core module of the programme, with a breakdown of teaching methods and forms of assessments used.

There's a strong theme throughout the core classes of ongoing transferable skills development, including team-work, problem-solving, data handling and analytical skills, evaluation skills and written and oral communication. Particularly, the consulting in practice class provides you with professional, highly-transferable skills including leadership, project management, decision-making and negotiation.

Assessment

All core classes in the programme include coursework as an element of final assessment. Other methods of assessment are also used, appropriate to the focus of the class, including group and individual project work, presentations and online assessed exercises. Relative weighting of coursework and other assessment methods vary from class to class.

The dissertation or project will be assessed by in-depth project evaluation reports, supervisor feedback reports and a critical reflection of professional and personal skills.

THE COORDINATOR OF THE SEMINAR

The International Seminar on European Project Management is organized and coordinated by Pixel, an education and training institution based in Florence (Italy) having as its main aim the provision of support to internationalization and European Cooperation. Pixel successfully coordinated and managed over 85 European projects. Some of the European programmes that funded the projects in which Pixel was and is involved are: Socrates ODL; Socrates Minerva, Socrates Grundtvig, Socrates Lingua, eLearning, Leonardo da Vinci, Lifelong Learning, Justice Programme, Safer Internet Programme. Many among the European projects coordinated by Pixel were given an “Excellent” rating and identified as “Best Practice” by the European Commission.

ORGANIZATION

The European Project Management international Seminar has a duration of 60 hours.
30 hours of classroom based learning held in Florence (Italy). The 30 hours course is organized in 6 days, Monday to Saturday, 5 hours each day.
30 hours of e-learning integrated with virtual meetings with the course tutor and the other course participants. A Forum is also available for virtual meetings among all participants.

The approach used is highly practical, based on the expertise of the course trainers who have over 15 years of experience in planning and managing projects and initiatives funded by the European Commission, mainly in the sector of Education and Training.

A practical simulation is carried out for each topic in focus. The practical simulation is based on the use of the services, databases and documentation made available, on-line, by the European Union.
The objective of the practical activity is the simulation of the development and presentation of a European project.
At the end of the international Seminar, every work group will have produced a first draft of a European project including the application form, budget, transnational partnership etc.

FOLLOW UP

During the classroom course each participant is introduced to the e-learning course’s contents.

During the four weeks after the classroom course, 2 virtual meetings are organized between the course trainers and tutor and the course participants to further analyse and discuss the contents learnt at distance. An on line Forum is also available for all course participants to ask questions to the course trainers and share the answers with their colleagues.

EUHT StPOL has a study Help Fund for studies in its centre. The aim of this fund is to assist entrance for candidates to educational programs who for economic reasons have difficulty in enrolling. Students who choose to take an elective module(s) in Bradford or at one of our partner institutions will have a wider range of choices, including modules such as Mergers and Acquisitions, Management Consulting and Global Supply Chain Management. Up to three modules may be taken in this way at no extra cost.

The management project is an integral part of the Bradford MBA and is often the most challenging and rewarding part of the programme. At the end of the taught programme you put into practice what you have learnt by investigating and reporting on an important management issue or opportunity. If you are sponsored by your employer, the project can relate to your workplace.

Otherwise, you may choose to use the project to deepen your knowledge of a different sector or organisation, or as a stepping stone to your next job. The project findings and recommendations are then written up in a 9,000-word dissertation.

Throughout the project you will be guided by an experienced academic and you will have access to the School of Management Effective Learning department. The Effective Learning service often proves to be very useful providing students with a clear understanding and guidelines on what is required in order to successfully complete their project.

Learning activities and assessment

Students are expected to take two subjects (modules) every three months.

Each module contains nine study units. Students typically progress by studying one unit from each module per week. This equates to approximately 14-16 hours of study per week. If you don't think that you have enough time to study two modules over the three month period you can always chose to study just one module, lightening your workload considerably.

If work or family life is particularly busy then you can even suspend your studies and restart at a later date. This flexibility means that students can complete a distance learning MBA in 2 to 6 years. We do however strongly advise that students study two modules every three months.

Study Abroad

You may decide you want to accelerate your studies, learn about a particular subject area, study alongside other University of Bradford School of Management students or simply broaden your horizons and spend some time studying overseas. You can do this by undertaking up to three block modules (i.e. 3-5 days of intensive study) at no extra cost (other than travel, accommodation and subsistence) at the School of Management or at any one of our partner institutions in Dubai and Singapore.

Career support and prospects

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. The management project is an integral part of the Bradford MBA and is often the most challenging and rewarding part of the programme. At the end of the taught programme you put into practice what you have learnt by investigating and reporting on an important management issue or opportunity. If you are sponsored by your employer, the project can relate to your workplace.

Otherwise, you may choose to use the project to deepen your knowledge of a different sector or organisation, or as a stepping stone to your next job. The project findings and recommendations are then written up in a 15,000-word dissertation.

Throughout the project you will be guided by an experienced academic and you will have access to the School of Management Effective Learning department. The Effective Learning service often proves to be very useful providing students with a clear understanding and guidelines on what is required in order to successfully complete their project.

Learning activities and assessment

All our MBA programmes are made up of three stages:
-Core modules – designed to help you get back in to learning and provide fundamental knowledge of management principles and theory
-Elective modules – provide an in-depth understanding of specialist topics that are essential and relevant to the contemporary commercial world. Students choose those that are of most interest or greatest career benefit
-Management project – enables you to put the knowledge and skills gained throughout the programme to practical use on a relevant management issue

Circular Economy students are not required to attend any sessions at University of Bradford School of Management. However students can chose to study up to three modules (each running over 3-5 days) at the School of Management or at one of our partner institutions in Singapore or Dubai for no extra cost (other than travel and subsistence costs).

Your knowledge and understanding of each subject area studied will be assessed by the most appropriate means. This will typically involve the completion of a written assignment, an exam or in some cases an assignment and an exam. If you need to sit an exam we have approved examination centres worldwide, making it highly likely that there is an exam centre near you. Please note, if you do not sit the exam at University of Bradford School of Management or RDI (Coventry) you have to pay an extra fee to your chosen examination centre.

Study Abroad

You may decide that you want to accelerate your studies, learn about a particular subject area, study alongside other University of Bradford School of Management students or simply broaden your horizons and spend some time studying overseas. You can do this by undertaking up to 3 block modules (i.e. 3-5 days of intensive study) at no extra cost (other than travel, accommodation and subsistence) at the School of Management or at our partner institution in Dubai.

Career support and prospects

An MBA is an opportunity to either change career direction or consolidate experience then return and progress in a previous industry or job. The Financial Times Global MBA rankings show that alumni continue to operate in a wide range of sectors with, on average, 20% of them being in board level positions within three years of graduation.

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career Development Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of programmes there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

As part of a leading research-intensive university, the School of Management comprises a community of scholars that research and contribute to the guiding principle of responsible enterprise. We are concerned with formal and informal ways of organising a wide variety of ‘enterprises’: private, public and social. We explore issues of accountability and ethics as we study these enterprises, by pursuing a number of intellectual themes that guide our research and teaching. These include the ethics of corporate governance, the impacts of investment, organising for creative outcomes, the internal management of organisations and the interactions between organisations and society.

Our research guides and informs our teaching in the School where we encourage our students to engage critically with this subject matter and develop their skills in analysis, synthesis, evaluation and application.

Location

The School of Management is located in the Gateway Building on the North Haugh which is set in an open green space close to the beach, halls of residence, sports facilities and the town centre. The Gateway has state-of-the-art lecture and seminar facilities as well as an extensive private study area for students. In addition, there is a public café on the ground floor of the building with views of the famous Old Course golf course and the North Sea.

Teaching methods

The taught elements of the programmes are delivered through a mixture of core and option modules, with each of the first two semesters having approximately 12 hours per week of staff / student contact. We use a range of delivery methods, including lectures, small group tutorials, workshops and seminars. Our average lecture size is 30 students, however, in some cases there will be seminars of 15-18 students or larger lectures with up to 100 students, which would normally be augmented by small-group tutorials. There is also a weekly series of lectures and workshops for all students focusing on research methods and other topics to help prepare for the dissertation. In addition to scheduled classes, you will have the opportunity to participate in our Masters Extra (MX)
Programme, which includes guest lectures from academics and business executives, specific sessions to enhance your career development opportunities and a range of corporate visits.

Employment opportunities exist for graduates in a wide range of organisational contexts such as management consultancy, investment banking, fast moving consumer goods, nongovernmental organisations, business development agencies, tourism, advertising and public relations, the Civil Service, government agencies and the education sector.

Alumni from the School of Management have secured employment in the fields of general management, marketing and brand management, accountancy, investment analysis, fund administration and other aspects of the financial services industry. You will acquire a sound knowledge of the theoretical foundations that underpin modern investment and risk management techniques. These principles are applied in practice via case studies and the use of online databases such as Bloomberg and simulators. The practical aspect is delivered with extensive input from City of London institutions. Many leading practitioners teach on the course, providing a vital link between theory and practice.

The MSc in Investment Management is a demanding course. Induction Weeks The MSc in Investment Management course starts with two compulsory induction weeks, including:

- An introduction to Cass Careers with a focus on the key skills and attributes that employers are looking for. The annual MSc Careers Fair at this time also provides the opportunity to meet over 60 companies who are recruiting across many sectors including finance, energy, insurance, real estate, shipping, strategic management and internal auditing.

- Database inductions, and introductions to the course, studying at Cass and financial services

Format

To satisfy the requirements of the degree course students must complete:

• eight core courses (15 credits each)
and
• five electives (10 credits each)
or
• three electives (10 credits each) and an Applied Research Project (20 credits)
or
• one elective (10 credits) and a Business Research Project (40 credits)

Assessment

Assessment of modules on the MSc in Investment Management, in most cases, is by means of coursework and unseen examination. Coursework may consist of standard essays, individual and group presentations, group reports, classwork, unseen tests and problem sets. Please note that any group work may include an element of peer assessment.

International Opportunities

Students on the MSc in Investment Management and the MSc in Corporate Finance are able to apply for an additional year's study at LUISS or Bocconi University in Italy. Two places are available at each school every year. Students are selected on the basis of their term one results at Cass and a short essay.

International elective modules may also be available in term three.

Career opportunities

The MSc Investment Management has graduates working as portfolio managers, hedge-fund specialists, traders, risk managers, security analysts, brokers and corporate treasurers. The wide variety of functions that our graduates are able to perform reflects the breadth of the course and the flexibility of the qualification.
