Advanced Model-Based Engineering and Reasoning (AMBER)

The AMBER group aims to equip systems and software engineering practitioners with effective methods and tools for developing the most demanding computer systems. We do this by means of models with well-founded semantics. Such model-based engineering can help to detect optimal, or defective, designs long before commitment is made to implementations on real hardware.

Digital Interaction Group (DIG)

The Digital Interaction Group (DIG) is the leading academic research centre for human-computer interaction (HCI) and ubiquitous computing (Ubicomp) research outside of the USA. The group conducts research across a wide range of fundamental topics in HCI and Ubicomp, including:

Work covers a broad spectrum - understanding the biological and molecular differences between normal and malignant cells and using this knowledge to develop new anti-cancer drugs.

Our staff and postgraduate students are based in the Northern Institute for Cancer Research (NICR) or the School of Chemistry. The NICR incorporates the Newcastle Cancer Centre, a unique collaboration between Cancer Research UK and the North of England Children's Cancer Research Fund.

We are a major training base for the next generation of cancer researchers. Our Institute covers many areas of cancer research, including:

The Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Culture MA combines the benefits of an interdisciplinary, cross-period MA with the capacity to follow your interests in a particular discipline or period. You will be taught by a team of specialists across English, History, Music and Archaeology and benefit both from expert classroom teaching and from field trips to important Medieval and Early Modern sites and collections both locally and abroad. Rich local resources will be fully exploited for teaching and dissertation research on the MA, notably Salisbury Cathedral Library and Archive, to which you will have privileged access. You will also have the opportunity to make a guided and fully-funded week-long trip abroad to a European city rich in medieval and renaissance heritage, such as Rome or Paris. In addition the MA core modules will train you in interdisciplinary methods and core research skills such as Medieval and Renaissance Palaeography. Learn core research skills such as palaeography, Latin, or a modern foreign language to enable you to progress to PhD study at Southampton or elsewhere. Overview

Two Core Modules, From Medieval to Renaissance Parts I and II, will introduce you to key methods, approaches and resources for interdisciplinary study of the Medieval and Early Modern periods. You will learn key skills in manuscript and archival work, including how to assess, read, transcribe and edit Medieval and Early Modern documents appropriate to your research interests. You will also gain experience of working with Medieval and Renaissance source collections through our regional and foreign field trips. Most students of the Medieval and Renaissance periods will take our optional module in Latin, which will equip you to read and translate Classical and Medieval forms of the language. In consultation with the course convenor, however, you may replace Latin with with an alternative language appropriate to your research interests.

How you will be assessed

The course is assessed by coursework and examination.

Students taking the Postgraduate Diploma carry out a shorter research project and complete an extended report.

Careers

There is a continuing demand for civil engineers particularly in the energy and water sectors and the skills of the civil engineer are highly portable in the multi-disciplinary engineering sectors. The latest Institution of Civil Engineers Salary Survey for the UK (2010) indicates that the average total income of its senior members is nearly £100k, while that of recent graduates is £27.5k.

We are proud of our achievements in graduate employment. This programme draws together teaching from a wide range of disciplines, investigating the application of computational technologies to the arts, humanities and cultural heritage. We study the impact of these techniques on cultural heritage, museums, libraries, archives and digital culture while developing skills that employers and students tell us are needed.

About this degree

Our students develop an advanced understanding of digital resources, techniques and computational methods relevant to research and practice in the humanities and cultural heritage sectors; these include programming, XML, databases, internet technologies, image capture and digitisation. They receive both practical and theoretical training to develop a unique and critical skill set suitable for many types of employment or advanced study.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of five core modules (75 credits), three optional modules (45 credits), a research dissertation (60 credits) and a work placement.

Dissertation/report

All MA/MSc students undertake an independent research project in the form of a 12,000-word dissertation.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, seminars and practical sessions, and will include a work placement in a relevant organisation. Assessment is through a mixture of essays, practical projects, programming exercises, written technical examinations, and group work projects, depending on the options chosen.

Placement

Students undertake a 4-6 week work placement as part of their programme of study. Past placement hosts have included the British Museum; British Library; Marx Memorial Library; Islington Museum; the Postal Museum; Ken Saro-Wiwa Foundation; Ubiquity Press; SOAS, University of London; UCL Grant Museum; and The Warburg Institute.

Careers

The cultural heritage sector is increasingly aware of the need to provide and manage digital material and projects with institutions and museums investing heavily in online content. Our graduates develop a unique skill set and are well placed for project management, further research, or a career in e-commerce and the fast growing digital field. Our alumni have found employment in the British Museum, Oxford University, UNESCO, International Red Cross, Knowledge 4 All Foundation, and the British Medical Journal, in roles as diverse as web editor, chief operating officer, and senior digital marketing executive. Several have also progressed to fully-funded research degrees; others have further developed their technical skills and have been recruited as programmers and developers for both academic and commercial projects.

Our Software Systems Engineering (SSE) MSc provides an ideal foundation for PhD study. The UCL SSE group is regularly ranked in the top three groups in the world (Microsoft Academic Search), you will be taught by those who are setting the international agenda, and our research has been repeatedly rated as world-class. Fully-funded PhD scholarships are available for high-performing students.

About this degree

Students are trained in the principles and techniques of engineering large, complex software systems and gain the opportunity to apply these techniques in a realistic group project setting. The programme analyses current practice in software systems engineering, looking at the most significant trends, problems and results in complex software systems.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of five core modules (75 credits), and either a group project (60 credits) or three research modules (90 credits) including a project. Students will be able to select between one and three modules (15 to 45 credits) from electives.

Dissertation/report

Most students participate in a group industrial project, generally in close collaboration with one of our industrial partners. 

Other students undertake either an individual or small-group research project, under the supervision of academics in UCL's Software Systems Engineering group.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, written and laboratory exercises, and group project supervision. Student performance is assessed through written exercises with modelling notations, laboratory exercises with tools and environments, unseen examination papers, and a significant, comprehensive group project.

Funding

The department typically does not hire postgraduate students on research or teaching assistantships because the students need to work full-time on their studies for the programme.

Music as a creative art form in the 21st century can combine both tradition and innovation, bringing together instruments (some new, some with centuries of history) and the latest in high technology.

As a composer today, all of these resources are available to you, and our research degrees in composition aim to foster your skills as you navigate this exciting new world.

On this programme you can create works which use electroacoustics and computer technology, traditional (and not so traditional) instrumental and vocal composition, or which combine these aspects. Works for interactive systems, multimedia, and sound installations are also welcome, and you are encouraged to find your own individual path.

We offer an MA by Research and a traditional PhD. Both are assessed on the submission of a portfolio of compositions but these differ between the two programmes:

MA by Research – the portfolio should have a total duration of between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the nature and size of the forces used, to be agreed with the supervisor. For those following this programme, it is possible to upgrade to a PhD.

PhD – this substantial portfolio (approximately 90 minutes in duration) should display a suitable range of genres and resources to be agreed by the supervisor, which is not derivative, and which satisfies the examiners that it contains original work which is worthy of performance at a professional level and also worthy of publication.

Our staff include composers, performers and writers on music. Our wide research expertise covers the Medieval, Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods, 19th and 20th century British music, music analysis, critical theory, ethnomusicology and sound studies.
