This joint Masters degree is designed for graduates wishing to start, or further develop, careers in Consumer Psychology and Business. The programme is delivered by schools which enjoy an international reputation in their field.

The marriage of both disciplines is a natural one, as understanding behaviour and specifically consumer behaviour in the world of business can be crucial to the success of businesses.

Today’s successful businesses and organisations need highly trained people who can help them understand their consumers and understand issues such as: What makes them choose one product over another? Do brand names and advertising really affect our thinking? Will the internet change the face of urban and suburban shopping areas?

In the first semester, Business and Consumer Psychology studies will be in equal proportions; however in Semester 2 there will be a greater focus on business, and the dissertation is undertaken in a business-related subject. It is also possible to undertake a Consumer Psychology and Business Masters degree that will involve a dissertation in Consumer Psychology. Please click here for further details.

Candidates may choose between the MA or MSc routes, which are differentiated by the nature of the dissertation. The MSc dissertation will involve undertaking empirical research, whilst the MA dissertation will involve an extended literature review.
Course Structure

The MSc and MA degrees in Business with Consumer Psychology are scheduled for a duration of 12 months. Each degree programme consists of two parts.

Part 1:

Is a wholly taught component, contributing 120 credits. All taught modules carry a credit weighting of 15 credits. Part 1 is taught during the two semesters which make up the academic year. Teaching during semester 1 normally runs from late-September to December, with examinations in January. Teaching during Semester 2 normally runs from late-January to early-May, with examinations in May and June.

Part 2:

Consists of a supervised Dissertation of around 10,000 words completed during the summer months, from late May to September. You are expected to submit your Dissertation by September in the calendar year following your initial registration for your postgraduate degree.

Compulsory Modules:

Consumer Psychology: This module is an introduction to consumer science as it is currently practiced in the marketplace and to relevant research in academia.

Marketing Strategy: This module critically evaluates the contributions of various schools of thought in marketing, and examines the relevant analytical models and management practices, with emphasis on the strategic importance of marketing to all organisations.
Management Research: This module analyses the philosophical basis for research in the management sciences, and examines a number of key methodological issues and approaches.
Applied Consumer Psychology: This module’s aim is to provide practical research experience in consumer psychology and involves hands-on work with viable commercial enterprises. Students are partnered with local companies and are required to design and conduct a practical consumer research project, typically involving field work.

European Business: This module examines the opportunities and constraints faced by businesses that operate on a pan-European basis. Emphasis is placed on the multi-dimensional characteristics of an economic and social space that is subject to a unique system of supra-national governance

Credit and Security Law: The supply of credit is the lifeblood of industry but of course a lender will require security. This module will examine in detail the provisions relating to the regulation of the supply of credit to consumers and business.

International Corporate Finance Law and Merger Regulation Law: This module focuses on the study of leading case law and selected legislation, relating to international mergers and their financing from several common law countries such as the USA, Britain, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, as well as China, India and the EU.

International Commercial Arbitration: This module considers the theoretical and institutional structure of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution, examines the legal framework within which disputes are resolved and reviews the practice of international commercial arbitration.

Consumer Law: This module focuses on the main areas of legal liability and the pitfalls that can arise if an organisation does not comply with the relevant consumer protection rules both in the UK and Europe.

Intellectual Property Law: This module addresses the fundamentals of intellectual property law, the definition and scope of copyright; the authorship, ownership, duration and qualification for copyright protection.

Competition Law: This module focuses on the theory and law of competition, focusing on UK competition law, and EU competition law relating to the control of restrictive practices, vertical and horizontal restraints and abuse of a dominant position. Comparative regimes, in particular that of the US, are examined.

Industrial Property Law: This module examines the history and development of industrial property law in the UK, EU and internationally. It covers the law relating to trade secrets, patents, copyrights, design rights and trademarks.

World Trade Law: This module studies aspects of the regulation of international trade through the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organisation.

International Insurance Law: Insurance plays an important role in commerce and risk management. Insurance contracts are governed by the rules of general law of contract. The module explores the nature and scope of the contract of insurance, considers the general principles of insurance, and examines the relationships between parties to a contract.

International Taxation Law: This module studies the basic principles of income taxation of international transactions involving taxpayers of several European countries (including the UK, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Ireland), the US, Australia, Canada and Japan.

Employment Law: Modern employment law is complex, and imposes major compliance costs on employers. This module covers contract of employment, minimum wage legislation, discrimination against employees, and unfair dismissal actions before Employment Tribunals.

International Environmental Law: This module focuses on internationally recognised principles and values concerning environmental protection, and how they are translated into legally enforceable tools. Methods of environmental regulation are analysed and compared.

This Programme aims to provide participants with a deep understanding of the main legal issues in international trade law, contract law and contract drafting. The Programme also explores key legal issues in contract formation, pre-contractual agreements, letters of intent and e-commerce. A variety of special topics are also explained, such as technology-licence agreements, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property rights, trademarks and patents, state contracts, construction and engineering contracts, as well as related modes of payment and dispute resolution mechanisms.


The LL.M. is an intensive course of one full year duration starting November 2014 structured in three different parts as follows:

The ACA qualification is from the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales). ICAEW Chartered Accountants are always in demand and the ACA Qualification equips students to perform at the highest levels of accountancy, business and finance.

The majority of ACA trainees work in accounting practice and the qualification has a strong practice subject focus (audit, taxation) as well as covering other key technical accounting areas. An increasing number of students are now training in other sectors too.Once qualified, ICAEW Chartered Accountants work in all sectors, from accounting practices to commercial organisations, financial institutions, not for profit organisations and the public sector.

We offer tuition for the ACA Qualification at our Newport and Cardiff campuses. We offer a flexible portfolio of ACA courses that appeal to large or small training organisations (day release and block delivery) and we are an ICAEW Partner in Learning (City Campus Newport; Cardiff Campus application pending).

What you will study

To qualify as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant students are required to complete:
• 15 examinations
• 450 days of technical work experience, which you gain by obtaining a training contract with an appropriate employer
• Professional development (delivered through ICAEW or your employer)
• Ethics and professional scepticism programme (delivered through ICAEW)

The ACA Qualification comprises three examination levels: Certificate, Professional and Advanced. A Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business (ICAEW CFAB) qualification is available upon completion of the Certificate Level, which is an excellent qualification in its own right for non-financial managers.

At the Advanced Level students are required to study a number of technical areas, which are then examined together in the Corporate Reporting and Strategic Business Management papers. These papers aim to simulate real-life business and accounting practice environments, and the concept is taken further with a final case study examination.

How you will study

We offer a flexible portfolio of ACA courses that appeal to large or small training organisations.Our average student pass rate on our ACA course since its inception in 2012 has been 83%.

Weekly day release tuition (with block revision):
• Available at City Campus, Newport for all Levels (Certificate, Professional, Advanced)
• Papers taught for one day per week, with a block revision period at the end
• Typical tuition period lengths:
• Certificate Level papers – 10 weeks plus revision block
• Professional Level papers – 11-14 weeks plus revision block
• Advanced Level – 18 weeks plus revision block
• Advantages: Knowledge built up and exam question practice undertaken week on week. Students build skills gradually and sustainably, and are not absent from their work place for long periods of time (which is particularly important for smaller accounting practices)

Full block delivery:
• Available at Atlantic House, Cardiff for Professional and Advanced Levels
• For example, students study two papers at a time at Professional Level and attend tuition for four whole weeks, spaced across a number of months
• 2-3 days spent on each paper per week
• Four tuition weeks: two focus on knowledge building, one on question practice, and one on revision

Assessment methods

Certificate level:
Each assessment is 1.5 hours long and each exam will be e-assessed.

Professional level:
Modules will be assessed by paper based exams. Each will be 2.5 hours long, with the exception of the Financial Accounting and Reporting paper which will be assessed by a three hour exam.

Advanced level:
Consists of two technical integration papers and a case study:

• Technical integration papers will be 3.5 hours long
• Case Study will be four hours long

Learning and teaching methods

Students will attend workshops which will contain lecture, tutorial and question practice elements.

ACA students enjoy early responsibility and excellent career progression. Many ACA students double their salary during training. Salaries for newly qualified ICAEW Chartered Accountants are on a par with careers in law and banking and many become partners or financial directors early in their careers, leading to a greater variety of opportunities.

Learning and teaching methods

We offer a flexible portfolio of ACCA courses at our Newport City (part-time and full-time) and Cardiff (part-time only) campuses.

- ACCA at Atlantic House, Cardiff Campus:
ACCA tuition is now available at our Cardiff Campus for papers F7-F8 and Professional Level papers (excluding P4).

The course is delivered on an employer-friendly, afternoon-evening basis. Tuition occurs in weekly slots, with students attending one day per week. Tuition runs between September-December (for examinations in December) and January-June (for examinations in June). September-December deliveries also include additional whole days. Students can commence studies in either September or January.

Course delivery has been designed to offer an excellent platform to learn, with knowledge built up gradually and sustainably through exam question practice which is undertaken week-on-week. This mode of delivery also ensures that students are not required to be absent from their work place for long periods of time.

Our Professional Tuition Hub is located at our state of the art City Campus on the banks of the river Usk in Newport City Centre. Opened in 2011, City Campus has excellent teaching rooms, library and student catering facilities. City Campus is easily accessible from across South Wales and border counties – being near Newport train station and M4 Junctions 27 and 28 – and has ample safe, secure parking on the doorstep. We also offer ACCA tuition at our Cardiff Campus Atlantic House building, situated in the heart of the Cardiff Financial and Professional Services enterprise zone and close to our Atrium building with its first class student amenities.

3. Excellent study and employer resources
Study texts and other resources (including progress tests and mock examinations for all papers, to reinforce exam technique) are supplied to our students as part of the tuition fee. Our tuition sessions can be recorded and replayed by students for the duration of the teaching year. Student performance reports for sponsoring employers are available on request.

4. An experienced and focused tuition team
Our permanent professional course tuition team consists of 11 qualified accountants and 1 qualified lawyer (plus other subject specialists). Members of the team:
• have significant accounting practice and industry ‘first career’ experience, as well as vast experience of teaching students to pass professional exams;
• also work/have worked for the private sector tuition providers;
• provide CPD sessions for the local professional bodies; and
• engage in bespoke CPD training for large organisations.

This course offers you the opportunity to develop your creative and technical skills as an independent filmmaker working in fiction film. You will have the opportunity to write and direct your own Short Film, or follow a specialist route as a Head of Department in film production.

You'll develop high level skills in a learning environment which nurtures technical excellence in the creation of cinematic sound and image. You'll develop personal creativity and the ability to collaborate effectively within a team in pursuit of a shared cinematic vision.

The course allows you to experience the rigours of filmmaking by reflecting the realities of current film practice, within the supportive structure of our extensive Film School. It will enhance your understanding of the professional demands of the film industry and fully equip you for a freelance career, should you so desire.

You'll have the opportunity to engage in critical debate around current theoretical approaches to filmmaking practice, as well as developing your own practical project alongside other like-minded students.
