Course content

The Foundation course introduces the basics behind the PRINCE2® process-based method and prepares you for the test that leads to the PRINCE2® Foundation certificate.

The course begins by exploring the increasing importance of projects in today’s world before discussing what a project is, why projects fail and what the role of the project manager is. We will then introduce the structure of PRINCE2®, which consists of its principles, themes, processes and the idea of tailoring the method to its environment, before we expand on and explain each one of these elements in turn.

Teaching and assessment

The course requires a first pass of all the material in the official manual, so it is important that you do some reading before the course starts. We will provide you with pre-course material that explains what reading is expected before beginning the course.

The course consists of a series of classroom lectures and group exercises. The lectures introduce the method’s terminology, then we will discuss case studies to explain how to use the method in practice. We will provide supplementary learning material via the University’s online learning platform. At the end of each day we wil use multiple choice questions to remind us of the day’s learning and to prepare us for the certificate exam.

Project management is a modern career that is so generic it is applicable to any business sector. The presence of PRINCE2® certification has now become a minimum requirement for many CVs. For many, the certificate is a career-changing opportunity that leads to project management or consultancy work in one of the large UK or international government or non-government organisations.

The MSc/Diploma in Structural and Foundation Engineering is designed for graduates and practising engineers who wish to improve their knowledge of structural and foundation engineering. The structure and content of the programme has been carefully designed following liaison with a wide range of employers in the sector.

The staff members who deliver the programme have wide ranging expertise in specialist subjects which include reinforced concrete technology, dynamic and impact testing of materials, offshore engineering, structural safety, soil-structure interaction and numerical modelling.

The research activities of the programme involve combinations of experimental, numerical and theoretical work. The School has excellent practical facilities for static, dynamic, and impact testing and it has access to advanced computer and networking facilities that include a state-of-the-art parallel processing computer.

Professional Recognition

This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng (Hons) or an accredited IEng (Full) BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree. Programme Content

The curriculum covers the specialist technical and computational skills necessary for today’s construction industry and therefore offers excellent preparation for employment across an industry that includes consulting and contracting engineers, public authorities and local government. In addition, the programme also provides a suitable springboard for graduates seeking a career in a research lead environment.

Dissertation

MSc students are also required to submit a research dissertation, the research topic normally aligns with the research interests of the staff in the School but can be tailored to suit the interests of the student or student’s employer. Distance learning and part time students are encouraged to suggest project topics based on their own work experience.

At the discretion of the Programme Leader, MSc students may choose to nominate a research project which enables them to investigate a problem they have encountered in their workplace or elsewhere. The research project can be undertaken in conjunction with a suitable industrial partner on campus or in industry if the industrial partner has the facilities to provide adequate supervision.

Mode of Study

The programme may be studied on a part-time basis and will therefore appeal to practising engineers. It is also delivered via distance learning which enables students from all around the globe to study without the need to interrupt their career and travel to Scotland. Examinations may be organised in each student’s country of residence to avoid unnecessary travel costs.

The William Harvey Research Institute is currently the UK’s largest academic pharmacological research institute, with 350 scientists and clinicians from more than 40 nations, and has a long history of training talented scientists for careers in cardiovascular sciences and translational research (http://www.whri.qmul.ac.uk/). In the UK Research Assessment Exercise (2014) 90% of our research was rated as world leading or internationally excellent. We are now seeking outstanding life sciences graduates for our BHF funded 4 year MRes/PhD programme to commence in October 2017.

Successful applicants will join our Translational Cardiovascular Academy and undertake an MRes course for the first year of study offering students the foundation knowledge and abilities they will need to proceed to their PhD training. The year will be divided into distinct sections, the first being dedicated to the teaching of essential skills followed by laboratory-based research projects. Upon successful completion of their MRes studies, students will continue to study for a 3 year PhD working with their chosen supervisor within the William Harvey Research Institute or wider medical school and college.

FUNDING

Successful applicants will receive an award covering tuition fees and a bursary at the applicable BHF rates (currently £22,278 for the first year).

This is an intensive, full time programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) alongside your academic PGDE award. University-based study includes: a full time block of three weeks at the start of the course in September; one day per week until January; occasional week-long, full time study blocks between January and June and a number of conference days. A minimum of 120 days is spent in schools.

Placements are organised in our Partnership schools in the Greater Merseyside area. For the majority of the training you will gain your teaching experience in a “Home School” with a six week placement in an “alternative” school after Christmas. This innovative model ensures that you feel genuinely part of the staff whilst on school placement and can monitor and gain satisfaction from your impact on your pupils’ progress over time.

You will also be allocated a teacher mentor who will organise and supervise your school-based training. Your mentor will be supported by your LJMU tutor who will visit your school several times to monitor your progress. Additional professional development sessions are organised in school during placements.

Tutorial support is an important part of the LJMU learning process and you will receive a personalised service that will enable you to set targets and achieve your potential. Your personal tutor will support your academic and professional development and will meet with you formally during the year.

You will undertake a significant amount of independent study and preparation to support your course assignments and school-based work and should be prepared to work some evenings and weekends.

University-based training takes place at the IM Marsh campus just four miles from the city centre. Here you will find independent study spaces with IT facilities, a library, access to student welfare and support, a gym and other sports facilities plus a café and shop.

The IM Marsh Library houses the main collections linked to this course and is open from 8am until 11pm during term time. You will also have access to the 24 hour, city centre Aldham Robarts and Avril Robarts libraries.

The University element of the programme is based around six core modules focusing on:

-Professional Practice (a series of school-based investigations of current issues)

-Developing Reflective Professional Practice (enabling you to effectively evaluate your school-based practice)

The degree programme consists of three modules:

1) Foundation module
2) Scientific Methods module

The degree programme consists of three modules:

1) Foundation module: this consists of the foundation courses in Civil Law and Constitutional Law (both courses include a lecture and a tutorial). You will choose one of these two foundation courses, each of which is taught for a period of two semesters (Foundation Courses 1 and 2).

2) Scientific Methods module: This module, which takes place in the winter semester, consists of a seminar for master's students, in which you will write a seminar paper and give a presentation.

3) Elective module: You will choose three of the following five electives: Civil Law, Public Law, Criminal Law, International Aspects of German Law and Principles of Law. Two courses are held in the winter semester and one in the summer semester. In addition to addressing the APM's core competencies, the course has four objectives which underpin it:

The Proseminar: Contemporary Issues in Environmental Studies (1 c.u.)

This course reviews the key sciences fundamental to an interdisciplinary study of the environment: biology, geology, chemistry and physics. It takes a systems approach to the environment with a look at the atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere and the intersection of humans with each. This required course also acquaints students with issues, debates and current opinions in the study of the environment. Different styles of writing, from white papers to blogs, will be assigned throughout the semester.

Research Methods course (1 c.u.)
Designing research is a key building block of the Master of Environmental Studies program. The research methods course prepares students to ask, and confidently answer, the innovative questions they will pose in their capstone projects. The requirement can be fulfilled by taking a methodology course that provides students with the data gathering and analysis skills they’ll use to begin their research projects.

Foundation courses (4 c.u.)
At both the local and international scale, issues such as climate change, diminishing natural resources, water access, energy security, low-level toxins and habitat destruction all require not only the best science available, but the ability to integrate this knowledge to make decisions even when considerable uncertainties exist.

Environmental challenges are complex, and their solutions never come from just one sector of society. We believe that in order to become a leading problem-solver in the environmental arena, you need to be able to draw connections between many disciplines.

Foundation courses help broaden your knowledge in areas outside of your chosen concentration, and complement your chosen field. For example, if you are studying sustainability, your foundation course credits are an opportunity to learn about environmental law and policy, or become versed in business, which will be necessary while working in the sustainability sector. The capstone project is a distinguishing feature of the Master of Environmental Studies program, blending academic and professional experiences and serving as the culmination of your work in the program. You will design a project drawing from your learning in and outside the classroom to demonstrate mastery of your concentration area.

During your first year, your academic advisor will help you choose a topic for your capstone project. Once you’ve done so, you’ll seek out two readers for your capstone. These can be faculty members or professionals in a relevant field. The readers serve as advisors and mentors, and our students frequently find their first jobs after graduation as a result of the connections they make during the capstone process.

The capstone projects themselves vary widely, from research papers to videos, business plans, photojournals and websites. However, all projects demonstrate students’ ability to:

Define a research question
Design a protocol to address this question
Acquire the data necessary to clarify, if not resolve, the question
Critically assess the quality of the data acquired
Draw defensible conclusions from those data
Communicate this process and conclusions to professional colleagues with clarity and precision
Time frame

Master of Environmental Studies students may enroll on either a part-time or full-time basis. Your time to graduation will vary depending on how many classes you take each semester and whether you take summer classes. Full-time students can complete the program in two years, taking three or four classes per semester. Part-time students typically complete their work in four years, taking one or two classes per semester. Individuals working full time are advised to take no more than two courses per term.

Transferring graduate credits

Incoming students may petition to transfer up to two graduate-level credits from classes completed prior to their admission at Penn. Students seeking transfer credit should fill out a form after they matriculate into the program, along with an official transcript, to the Program Director before the end of their first semester at Penn. A transfer credit form is available on the program’s Blackboard site, which is accessible to current students only. Transfer credit is evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the faculty advisory committee.

This innovative and intensive two-year course aimed at students with an existing degree (2:2 or above) will equip you with the knowledge and skills to assess and manage the nursing care needs of children and families, including those with acute and long-term conditions. Time spent on placement
During the course you will spend 50% of your time involved in academic study and 50% in clinical practice within a broad variety of healthcare settings. A clinical practice placement allows you to put theory into practice by working with a range of health professionals in clinical situations to develop the skills, knowledge and experience required to become a competent nurse. Although sometimes initially challenging, practice learning is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of learning to be a nurse.

Structure of placements
Placements are spread over the two years:

Your initial placements are designed to introduce you to working in a professional setting and to develop essential care and basic assessment skills, infection control and learn about safeguarding vulnerable people.

You will then build on the experience gained from Year one and will begin to take on more responsibility, progressing your clinical reasoning skills and begin to look after small groups of patients making confident, proactive decisions for their health and management with less supervision.

You will also have the opportunity to choose a four week elective placement in which you can pick a speciality (e.g. working with Clinical Nurse Specialists, specialist services or independent and 3rd sector providers), or a different context of care (e.g. prison, private health care facility, social care, charity, hospice etc.), or a lived experience of a certain condition (e.g. charity work, carer shadowing, etc.) During your final year, you will require less supervision and will be responsible for a small group of patients.

Whilst in the clinical placement we ensure our nursing students receive continuous support and guidance from a dedicated mentor and practice learning teams made up of lecturers and practitioners.

Facilities

Children's skills laboratories
We have two Children's skills laboratories which are set up like nursing wards. The skills labs are used by all student nurses throughout their on-campus study time at LSBU. They learn manual handling of patients, basic life support skills and skills specific to the field of nursing.

SimMan
The nursing wards have simulator mannequins; SimMan, SimBaby and SimMom. These life-size mannequins are computer controlled and can be programmed with various clinical conditions. These are operated by a computer in real-time and so respond to a students' actions. They also allow students to see the outcome of specific interventions in certain scenarios, which could make the patient better or deteriorate quite quickly.

The mannequins are used to teach students how to recognise clinical signs, and to also associate those clinical signs with the actions they are taking to care for the patient. SimMan can be male or female with fully accurate anatomy and can breathe, blink, sweat, speak and groan in pain as well as have a pulse.

Children's nurses work in a child-centred and multi-professional team, which is reflected in the variety of people who contribute to the course. Expert speakers include service users, such as parents and charitable organisations, expert practitioners and other lead professionals in child health and children's nursing.

Career progression

All graduates are offered the opportunity to apply for employment with the NHS Trusts and hospitals where they gained experience during training when posts are available. The course has an excellent record in graduate employment, including working overseas, and covering a range of qualified nurse positions.

Successful graduates of the PgDip can top-up to an MSc in one year and will be qualified to study a range of further specialist postgraduate pathways. • Phase 3 - Specialisation Stage – April to June

Methods of teaching

Most modules involve a mixture of lectures and small group teaching (called syndicates, seminars, workshops or tutorials).

In a lecture, the lecturer will mainly give an overview of a particular aspect of the module content (as well as opportunities for you to ask questions and be reflective), while in classes and workshops you will have an opportunity to practice techniques, discuss ideas, apply concepts and consolidate your understanding in the topic

Support

You will be allocated a personal tutor at the beginning of your studies. Normally, your personal tutor will teach on your own degree course and you will keep the same personal tutor throughout your course.

Your personal tutor will be able to give you advice on academic issues, including module choice and assessment. If you encounter any problems which affect your studies, your personal tutor should always be your first point of contact; she/he will be able to put you in touch with the wide range of expert student support services provided by the University and the Students' Union as appropriate. You are required to meet with your personal tutor at three points during each academic year but you are also encouraged to get in touch with them at any other point if you need help or advice.

For day-to-day information, the staff of our Postgraduate Student Hub are available, in person, by telephone or by email, from 8am to 6pm each weekday during term time to answer your questions.

Feedback

We’ll provide you with regular feedback on your work. This comes in a variety of formats including oral feedback, personalised feedback on written work, and generic written feedback.

You will be given general feedback in relation to examinations following all examination periods and you will be able to discuss your overall performance with your personal tutor.

When undertaking the dissertation/project you are expected to meet regularly with your supervisor to review progress and discuss any questions. Your supervisor will be able to provide feedback on your research plan and drafts of your work as you progress.

Assessment

Assessment methods vary from module to module but, across your degree scheme as a whole, you can expect a mixture of exams, coursework, essays, practical work, presentations, and individual and group projects.

Description

The Physiotherapy (pre-registration) MSc course places a strong emphasis on scientific research combined with evidence-based clinical practice and critical and analytical learning. We aim to provide you with the skills to enable you to work in a changing healthcare environment. The course is made up of modules that integrate teaching and learning from psychological and social sciences with anatomy, physiology and physiotherapy practice.

The course comprises four foundation and five masters modules and runs for two calendar years from September to September. You must take modules totalling 270 credits to meet the requirements of the qualification, covering foundation modules totalling 90 credits at Level 4, and masters modules totalling 180 credits at Level 7.

This course is not appropriate for holders of any UK or overseas physiotherapy/physical therapy qualifications.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

  • For Foundation modules, contact hours range from 40 – 80 hours which are made up of lectures, practical sessions, seminars and tutorials.
  • For master’s modules Reflections on Current Practice 1 & 2 and Rehabilitation & Exercise, contact hours range from 30 - 60 hours that’s made up of lectures, practical sessions, seminars and tutorials.
  • For the master’s module Physiotherapy Practice, contact time is higher at 150 hours due to the substantial practical element, but also includes lectures, practical, seminars and tutorials.
  • The Research Project module contact hours are determined by individual project supervisors.

Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.

Study time

  • For all 15-credit modules, you are expected to undertake approximately 100 hours of self-directed learning.
  • For all the 30-credit modules, you will be expected to undertake approximately 240 hours of self-directed learning.

Clinical Education

In order to gain a licence to practice, you will have to complete at least 1,000 clinical hours. During the programme, you will apply what you have learned on a series of clinical placements in a variety of environments, ranging from large teaching hospitals to small special schools within the community. The majority of placements are in Greater London, but you may be placed throughout south-east England. We have designed this course to match the needs of the modern ever-changing health sector. We work closely with a network of clinical colleagues, primarily in the NHS, and these partnerships ensure that the course’s delivery and development are practice-led.

This course is primarily taught at the King’s College London Guy’s and Waterloo Campuses. Course objectives

The course is specifically aimed at students with a veterinary science qualification with the object of giving training in the wide range of disciplines and skills necessary for the investigation, prevention and control of aquatic animal diseases. Structure and content

The full Master’s course for each degree outcome is divided into four taught modules containing 12 subject areas or topics; two Foundation modules, two Advanced modules and a single Research Project module. The overall course is divided into three parts:

- Foundation modules
The Foundation modules are taught between September and December. There are six compulsory topics of study within two taught modules, taken consecutively, giving instruction in basic aquaculture concepts and skills. Successful completion of both Foundation modules will qualify you for a Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Aquaculture.

- Advanced modules
The two Advanced modules consisting of six compulsory topics of study are taught between January and April. Successful completion of the advanced modules, subsequent to the Foundation modules, will qualify you for a Postgraduate Diploma in Aquatic Pathobiology.

- Research Project module
The Research Project module is normally completed between April and August, and involves research in many areas of aquatic animal health. These projects mostly laboratory based and often result in peer reviewed publications. Successful completion of the module, subsequent to foundation and advanced modules, will qualify you for an MSc in Aquatic Veterinary Studies.

Delivery and assessment

The course is delivered through a variety of formats including lectures, practical classes, seminars, field visits and directed study. Assessment consists of a number of assignments in a range of formats. The Research Project is graded on activities undertaken during the project, the thesis and a presentation you make in front of your peers, supervisors and examiners. The dissertation is examined by internal and external examiners.

You will gain an understanding of the biology, husbandry and environment of farmed aquatic species, in addition to specialist expertise in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of aquatic animal diseases in cultured organisms. It is also intended as preparation for students who plan to pursue a PhD in the area of aquatic animal health or disease.

If English is not your first language you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your English language skills:
- IELTS: 6.0 with 5.5 minimum in each skill
- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): Grade C
- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): Grade C
- Pearson Test of English (Academic): 54 with 51 in each component
- IBT TOEFL: 80 with no subtest less than 17

Structure and content

The full Master’s course for each degree outcome is divided into four taught modules containing 12 subject areas or topics; two foundation modules, two advanced modules and a single Research Project module. The overall course is divided into three parts:

- Foundation modules
The Foundation modules are taught between September and December. There are six compulsory topics of study within two taught modules, taken consecutively, giving instruction in basic aquaculture concepts and skills. Successful completion of both Foundation modules will qualify you for a Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Aquaculture.

- Advanced modules
The two advanced modules consisting of six compulsory topics of study are taught between January and April. Successful completion of the advanced modules, subsequent to the Foundation modules, will qualify you for a Postgraduate Diploma in Aquatic Pathobiology.

- Research Project module
The Research Project module is normally completed between April and August, and involves research in many areas of aquatic animal health. These projects are mostly laboratory based and often result in peer-reviewed publications. Successful completion of the module, subsequent to foundation and advanced modules, will qualify you for an MSc in Aquatic Pathobiology.

Delivery and assessment

The course is delivered though a variety of formats including lectures, practical classes, seminars, field visits and directed study. Assessment consists of a number of assignments in a range of formats. The Research Project is graded on your activities during the project, your dissertation and a seminar presentation made in front of your peers, supervisors and examiners. The dissertation is examined by Aquaculture and external examiner.

This course has run for almost 40 years and has trained over 200 students (in combination with Aquatic Veterinary Studies) from all over the world. It equips graduates with expertise applicable to a wide range of potential careers. The career path selected depends on your personal interests, as well as your previous experiences. Our graduates generally find employment in their area of interest and the world employment market in the area of aquatic animal health remains buoyant.
The course provides a natural career progression for most candidates and a conversion course for others wishing to enter the field. It also provides training for those who wish to pursue a PhD, especially in aquaculture, aquatic health, fisheries and aquatic resources management.
Over the last five intakes, in combination with the Aquatic Veterinary Studies degree, about 30 percent of graduates have gone on to a PhD or further research, about 25 percent have taken employment as aquatic health consultants, about 20 percent work in government fisheries departments, about 15 percent are university lecturers and the remainder are managers of farms or aquaria or have other types of employment.
