The Applied Petroleum Geoscience programme is a unique programme in subsurface geoscience and exploration at Heriot-Watt University.

This year-long MSc mainly focuses on petroleum geoscience, but it is closely linked with other MSc programmes and research groups in petroleum engineering and reservoir geology at Heriot-Watt's Institute of Petroleum Engineering. The programme is also applicable to non-petroleum subsurface geoscience subjects, such as CO2 storage and groundwater flow.

About the programme

The MSc in Applied Petroleum Geoscience provides students with a thorough training in aspects of subsurface geology, geophysics and geo-engineering, relating to the exploration, appraisal and development of subsurface resources.

Although the programme mainly focuses on exploration for hydrocarbon resources, and delineation of hydrocarbon reservoirs in the subsurface, the skills and knowledge learned in this subject are applicable to all subsurface geoscience areas, including groundwater exploration, waste disposal or CO2 sequestration.

The REM masters degree focuses on equipping students with the skills and knowledge they need to develop predictive models of the reservoir.

Most development decisions in oil companies are based on the predictions of computer models of the subsurface. The main objective of the MSc programme is to provide a thorough training in aspects of reservoir geology, geophysics and engineering related to the appraisal and development of subsurface hydrocarbon resources.

The programme is deliberately intensive, typically consisting of working a full 5 days per week of lectures and practical work, including labs or tutorial exercises designed to teach practical work, in addition to learning theory. The programme also includes two field trips to observe geology in the field for those with and without prior geological experience.

In addition, you will need to spend significant time in our drilling, petroleum and computer laboratories, as well as in private study directed by lecturers.

Lecturers spend part of the scheduled time in the tutorial sessions to provide further opportunities to consolidate your learning and support you with any additional learning, for example with technical aspects of the course. You will also have a personal tutor who will support your engagement with other academic matters to enhance your learning as well as personal and professional development.

Assessment is geared towards the subject matter in a way that encourages a deeper understanding and allows you to develop your skills. It includes examinations, assessed coursework, laboratory work and a dissertation that can often be linked with industry.

Assessment

Through the assessments designed for individual units, you practise and reinforce skills in researching, evaluating and synthesising materials with a critical eye; quantitative and qualitative data collection and handling, together with skills associated with conventional academic tasks. Across the taught units you will be experience a wide range of assessment types. These include comparative essays, oral presentations, annotated bibliographies and seminar papers for some units. In others, in addition to the requirement to demonstrate appropriate levels of criticality, analysis and evaluation, you are required to develop and demonstrate employment-related skills such as debating; preparing, contributing to and evaluating panel discussions; reflective evaluations; project planning; presenting material and managing a question and answer session.

You will gain important insights into the realities of professional environments that will broaden and advance your understanding of the field, required skills and opportunities. This programme explores how Economics can contribute to the analysis of public policy, offering important insights across a number of diverse fields from the study of public spending and regulation, to areas including fertility decisions and education.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

The School of Economics aims to influence public policy through research and teaching. Energy economics, health economics and the economics of education, for example, play a vital role in public policy and are areas in which our academics have particular expertise.

This programme will ensure you graduate with a strong appreciation of macroeconomics, microeconomics and econometrics, in addition to specialist knowledge on public policy.

You will learn how microeconomic analysis can help us to understand diverse issues such as public goods, regulation, development and family policy; and develop an ability to select appropriate techniques to evaluate policy interventions.

The primary aims of the programme are to:
-Enable and encourage students to develop their capacity for learning and communication within an open, scholarly environment

Course details

The programme of lectures and project work, encompasses a wide range of petroleum fundamentals, pertinent to the modern petroleum industry. Project work provides an opportunity for ideas and methods, assimilated through lectures and tutorials, to be applied to real field evaluation and development design problems. The course is applied in nature and has been designed so that on completion, you are technically well prepared for a career in industry.

Professional accreditation

Our MSc Petroleum Engineering is accredited by the Energy Institute, under licence from the Engineering Council. This means that it meets the requirements for further learning for Chartered Engineer (CEng) under the provisions of UK-SPEC.

By completing this professionally accredited MSc you could benefit from an easier route to professional membership or chartered status, and it can help improve your job prospects and enhance your career. Some companies show preference for graduates who have a professionally accredited qualification, and the earning potential of chartered petroleum engineers can exceed £100,000 a year.

Our Society of Petroleum Engineering (SPE) student chapter is one of only nine in the UK. SPE is the largest individual member organisation serving managers, engineers, scientists and other professionals worldwide in the upstream segment of the oil and gas industry. Through our SPE chapter we can invite professional speakers from industry, and increase the industrial networking opportunities for students.

What you study

For the Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) award you must successfully complete 120 credits of taught modules. For an MSc award you must successfully complete 120 credits of taught modules and a 60-credit master's research project.

You select your master’s research projects from titles suggested by either industry or our academic staff, but you may also, with your supervisor’s agreement, suggest your own titles.

Teaching

The course is delivered using a series of lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions.

Our MSc Petroleum Engineering is supported by excellent laboratory and engineering machine workshop facilities including fluid flow measurement, computer modelling laboratories, other laboratories and workshops, an excellent library and computing facilities. We have invested around £150,000 in laboratory equipment particularly in within core analysis and enhanced oil recovery.

We have several computer laboratories equipped with specialised and general-purpose software. This generous computing provision gives you extended access to industry-standard software – it allows you to develop skills and techniques using important applications. For upstream processes, Teesside University has access to educational software packages like Petrel, Eclipse, CMG, PIPESIM and Ecrin to simulate the behaviour of oil reservoirs, calculating oil in situ, and oil and gas production optimisation. As for downstream processes, you can use HYSYS to test different scenarios to optimise plant designs.

Facilities include:
Enhanced oil recovery and core analysis laboratory
The flow through porous media, enhanced oil recovery techniques and core analysis is done in the core flooding lab. The lab is equipped with core plugging and trimming, core preparation and conventional core properties measurement equipment. At a higher level, the lab is also equipped to perform some special core analysis measurements such as fluid relative permeabilities as well as rock surface wetting quantification.

Petrophysics laboratory
The petrophysics lab allows you to study the properties of rocks, particularly the measurement of porosity and evaluation of permeability. The lab is equipped with sieve analysis equipment to investigate grain sorting and its effect on permeability and the porosity of rocks. You are able to gauge saturation and fluid flow through porous media.

Surface characterisation laboratory
The rock surface characterisation lab is equipped with a zeta analyser to measure the rock surface electric charge. You study the rock surface wetting state, adsorption and desorption potential using digitised contact angle apparatus and thermos-gravimetric apparatus respectively.

Drilling laboratory
The drilling lab is equipped with mud measurement equipment including mud density, mud rheology and mud filtration systems to enable you to measure mud cake and formation damage. The lab highlights the importance of oilfield drilling fluids.

Assessment varies from module to module. The assessment methodology could include in-course assignments, design exercises, technical reports, presentations or formal examinations. For your MSc project you prepare a dissertation.

Employability

These courses provide specialist education tailored to the requirements of both the upstream and downstream petroleum industry. The relevance of this education combined with careful selection of candidates has encouraged oil and gas companies to target our graduates for recruitment over the years.

The petroleum industry is subject to dramatic changes of fortune over time, with the oil price capable of very rapid rates of change in either direction. Petroleum, however, remains the dominant source of energy, with current world production of oil and gas at record rates. In this environment, companies face increasing technological and commercial challenges to keep their wells flowing and are increasingly dependent on input from petroleum engineers and geoscientists.

On our Advanced Practice course you need to relate the content of each module to your own speciality, whether you are a nurse, midwife or AHP. In addition provision for practitioners from some specialities is built into the programme. For example primary care, palliative care and children and neonates. Our Advance Health Care programme is designed for individuals who are working in health care. Your main remit may involve research and other non-clinical roles.

This multi-professional, clinically focused course provides an internationally recognised Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and Master’s award. The course is suitable and relevant to all practitioners who want to retain a clinical role but may also like to have more involvement with policy developments. The programme can be followed on a part or full time basis. It can incorporate a prescribing qualification for some practitioners who wish to but do not already prescribe. As a graduate from the programme you will continue to develop your practitioner careers. Many of our graduates have been promoted during or on completion of the course and some have taken non-medical consultant posts.

Advanced clinical skill development is one of the key features of this postgraduate programme. This enables you to increase your autonomy in patient assessment, diagnosis, planning care with the patient, prescribing of treatment and evaluation of outcomes. You will be supported in identifying practice learning skills that are required for your own speciality throughout the course. Student and practice facilitator(s) will discuss and write your own action plan so that learning is directly focused on the needs of your patients and the service being provided.

A further key quality is the development of deeper knowledge and understanding of populations related to your speciality. This will help you to assess the needs of the population and develop your involvement with service design, reconfiguration, development and delivery. This supports advanced practitioners to have greater confidence and involvement in wider debates within the health care arena and involvement with the formation of local and national policy.

Entry Requirements:
These courses are suitable for senior professionals employed in primary or secondary care.
You will need to:
• Be a registered practitioner, currently in practice.
• Have three to five years professional experience is required in your speciality and a first degree or evidence of recent professionally related study at diploma or degree level.
• Have studied Research Methods at level 6 (degree level) or Physiology at level 5 (diploma level) or Prescribing (level 6). Alternatively, you may need to complete some pre-course written work.
• 150 study hours will be required to complete the on-line research and physiology access reading and essay’.

Course overview:
The course is aimed at senior practitioners including Allied Health Professionals and nurses or midwives who are involved with hands-on patient services who wish to further develop their careers. Its an established, dynamic programme with the content adjusted each year to meet current health priorities and cohort needs. The programme is renowned for providing excellent tutorial support to ensure students can relate module content to their individual practice setting.

Course structure:
Our courses are as flexible as possible to help you find the option that best suits your personal and professional commitments. You can choose to study for a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) or a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) and then continue your studies with the Master’s (MSc), either through full, part-time or modular study, depending on which is most convenient.
If you have a first degree and are keen to take your studies further, but feel that a MSc is too much of a commitment, you can choose to take a single module in the subject that interests you (see modules listed under the individual course descriptions). Choose from a range of optional modules offered across the Faculty.

These can only run if selected by a minimum of eight students. Please note that, normally, modules related to Advanced Health Assessment and Advanced Practice cannot be taken as stand-alone modules.

Assessment:
For the PgDip, we use a wide range of continuous assessments, including essays, reports, practice documents and presentations. The Advanced Practice module will be assessed by your practice facilitator and monitored by the University. The Prescribing module has several assessments required by the NMC including OSCEs and an examination. For the MSc part of the programme you will need to carry out research for your Master’s dissertation.

Employability:
All students are seconded from their own practice setting and return on completion. The majority are appointed at a more senior grade with their existing employer or are promoted into a new role.

Dissertation

Contact time

Approximately 10-14 hours a week in the first two semesters. During semester three you will arrange your level of contact time with your assigned supervisor.

Assessment
