The Master of Design in Strategic Foresight and Innovation is creating a new kind of designer: A strategist who sees the world from a human perspective and re-thinks what is possible; An innovator who can imagine, plan and develop a better world.

Recognizing the increasing importance and need for new thinking skills to positively impact society, enhance business success and manage organizational change, this innovative program was launched in 2009 to address these issues and opportunities. Emphasis is placed on teaching complex problem finding, framing and solving, to envision and develop sustainable futures.

With an interdisciplinary, co-creative approach only possible at an art and design university, the entrepreneur, social scientist, artist, designer, and engineer will develop together the skills required for leading innovation. Our program prepares graduates to think holistically - exploring, challenging and finding meaning in order to reframe and guide both present and future actions.

Small class sizes and access to outstanding faculty and experts foster new learning opportunities: students practise foresight to envision possible futures; study systems to see the bigger picture; and explore human factors for a broader understanding of motivation and behaviour. This allows students to lead innovation, generating insight-driven ideas that will result in new possibilities, new outcomes and new opportunities for the world.

Program options

The MDes in Strategic Foresight and Innovation is offered as:

a part-time two-year (seven-semester) program
a full-time 16-month (four-semester) program (as of September 2013)
Both programs consist of 7.5 credits.

Objectives

Students will develop design-thinking skills that include analysis, synthesis and strategic and creative thinking, which are critical for professionals in the public, private and voluntary sectors. The program will develop students’ expertise in foresight, research and innovation methodologies and will enable them to acquire sufficient contextual knowledge to develop intelligent, innovative, visionary and future-enhancing solutions in their culminating projects.

Upon completion of the course, students will be ready to tackle the complexity of real-world issues as future-conscious developers of ideas and solutions, and entrepreneurial co-creators.

The program will enable students to:

explore and test innovative methods of organization, creation and production from a human perspective;
develop strategic, innovative and anticipatory solutions (strategic foresight) and implementation plans for design, business or policy innovations, or for organizational or infrastructural change;
navigate complex problems and find solutions that will lead to the development of new and sustainable futures.

The MSc in Integrated Product Design course focuses on the design of innovative products, emphasising the balance between the interest of users, industry and society. It covers the whole design process, integrating all aspects relevant to product development, in particular global new product design.

It meets industrial demand by integrating technology, management, aesthetics, environmental sustainability, ergonomics, marketing, business and design methods – to produce highly qualified and sought after designers able to cope with the challenges the global economy presents.

Specifically, the course aims to:

Provide an integrated programme of study across a broad range of knowledge and skills in product/industrial design
Develop design and technology research skills related to the design process through practicing applied research
Develop advanced design skills, enabling graduates to practice as an independent design professional and to further develop design and professional skills in product/industrial design engineering
Nurture scientific rigour as well as creativity to enable graduates to follow a successful career in product/industrial design and assume leadership roles in national and international companies and institutions.

Aims

Students master all aspects of integrated product design advancing their design skills and knowledge by applying systematic state-of-the-art theories and methodologies, and by integrating user, technology and business aspects. This not only opens up dynamic career options, but equips students with a comprehensive skillset to take into the commercial world.

The primary aim of this programme is to provide students with the practical knowledge and transferable skills required to be at the forefront of global product and services design research and development, in either an industrial or academic environment.
Graduates of this MSc will also have the independent learning ability required for both continual professional development and the acquisition of new skills at the highest level.

The course provides an integrated approach and promotes advanced studies in design theory, creativity and aesthetics, innovation methods, advanced design techniques, human factors and applied ergonomics, engineering, material and production science, sustainability and research methods.

Course Content

The first term includes three taught modules worth a total of 45 credits plus one double module of 30 credits which continues into the second term alongside three further modules. The thick module, Professional Design Studio, will include guest lectures, research seminars and group or individual project. The projects can be based on design research or product/industrial design.

The ‘Design Futures’ module will introduce the importance and potential value of future foresight techniques and develop a vision of the future and critically evaluate its implications for design, innovation and enabling technology.

The ‘Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing Techniques’ module will introduce CAD and graphics based design modelling, rendering techniques and tools, product design simulation techniques and tools, rapid prototyping and manufacturing techniques.

For the final four months of the programme (June to September), students can either continue their projects to greater depth as their dissertation project, or undertake a new subject. Students are encouraged to form industrial links as part of this project.

You may be interested in conventional legal doctrinal research, perhaps in a practice-based area such as funding of litigation; or the law in action in areas such as insolvency law or legal education by rigorous socio-legal data collection and analysis.

In the NTU programme, you will have the advantage of working with and sharing discussion with colleagues from other disciplines, principally social practice and education for additional and unusual insight into their own work and working practices. You will need to:

Create six formal documents that are presented as logical stages of the whole research project.
Partake in discussions concerning the development of your research.
Deliver group presentations with individual evaluation of the group.
We use diagnostic and formative feedback to support students in their ability to recognise strengths and weaknesses in their own research, and to negotiate targets for developing their study. All summative assessment is used to establish the level of achievement at the end of each module.

You will undertake the following research workshops comprising six stages of your research project for the award of a professional doctorate in your chosen field. There are no optional modules.

Research workshop one: Introduction: Research questions, aims and initial review of the literature (20 credit points at D level)
Research workshop two: Identity and Epistemology: Towards an understanding of literatures and conceptual frameworks (100 credit points at D level)
Research workshop three: Designing and using methods in research concerning social practice (60 credit points at D level)
Research workshop four: Designing and using research methods to complement the research in the preceding module concerning social practice (60 credit points at D level)
Research workshop five: Thesis: Critical Reflection and Reflexivity (120 credit points at D level)

Programme Aims

a) To enhance design skills and knowledge through theoretical and practical application individually and in multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary teams

b) Develop collaborative behaviour through active learning and team work, analysing and evaluating problems and responding to challenges in real time

c) To enable graduates to develop their critical thinking and insight to improve their effectiveness as designers

d) To enable graduates to develop their analytical and research skills through undertaking a substantial design and evaluation project with a focus on a particular area of design.

Programme Structure

To complete the MA/MSc Design Innovation students must complete 8 x 15 credit modules (4 in the first semester and 4 in the second semester). In the first semester 3 modules are compulsory with the option to choose your final 1 module from another Institute. In the second semester all 4 modules are compulsory. All students must complete a Dissertation worth 60 credits.

ASSESSMENT

Modules are assessed by a combination of essays, group exercises, presentations and time constrained assignments. Subject to your choices, there may also be exams.

Students will be asked to produce project briefs, concept drawings, user scenarios, storyboards, project blogs and multimedia documentation.

The sustainable extraction, supply, use and disposal/re-use of natural resources is increasingly critical to business, policymakers, and civil society around the world. This new degree investigates the topics of a circular economy, resource efficiency, and sustainable resource management, and will qualify students with the skills and knowledge to become leaders in this field.

Degree information

The curriculum fully reflects the global nature of the subject. Students will gain in-depth expertise at the intersection of the environmental, social and economic aspects of the management and governance of sustainable resources from both public policy and industrial perspectives. Key concepts will comprise resource efficiency and circular economy, the resource nexus and supply chain security.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of five core modules (75 credits), three optional modules (45 credits) and a dissertation project (60 credits).

Dissertation/report
All students undertake an independent research project, which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, project group work and presentations from visiting speakers from a range of businesses and other organisations. Assessment is through examination, assessed coursework, group work, and a dissertation.

Fieldwork
Students will participate in a field trip to Ironbridge (the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution). There will be no additional costs to students for this trip.

Careers

This programme equips students for challenging, rewarding and socially beneficial employment in a wide range of sectors including business, national and local government, NGOs and global organisations concerned with economy-resource-environment interactions. The programme includes a careers event with speakers from a variety of organisations, providing an opportunity to discuss opportunities with potential employers.

Students become members of the Sustainable Resources MSc alumni network and will be invited to attend alumni events and benefit from networking opportunities with fellow students.

Employability
On graduation students should possess a sound understanding of the key challenges surrounding sustainable resource use, supply and demand drivers and future strategies for global natural resource management. Students should also be technically competent in a range of economic, social science and modelling skills and techniques including integrated assessments, life cycle analysis, material flows analysis, foresight analysis/scenario analysis, system dynamics, and computable general equilibrium models (CGE).

Students develop 'key skills' valuable for future employment, including communication skills (written and oral), teamwork, breaking down complex problems, decision-making under uncertainties, intercultural communication, working in interdisciplinary environments, and awareness of the business context.

People are living longer and expect to be more mobile and active after injury or as they get older, therefore the demands for biomaterials and devices are increasing. Biomaterials combine engineering expertise with medical needs for the enhancement of healthcare. Biomaterials are either modified natural or synthetic materials which find application in a spectrum of medical implants for the repair, augmentation and replacement of body tissues. Queen Mary University of London has been a pioneer and led the field in teaching and research of biomaterials for over 28 years. In the early 1980s we were the first UK department to teach biomaterials modules and in 1991 the first to offer an undergraduate degree in the subject. This MSc programme will provide students with the knowledge in the field of biomaterials necessary to participate in biomaterials research or product development.

MA Interaction Design Communication is a practice-led design course that prepares students to design for an increasingly technologically informed and interdisciplinary design world with skills in the following areas: interaction design, design prototyping, physical computing, user centered design, open source digital platforms, design research, foresight and insight, experience design, communication design, speculative and critical design, interactive design and digital arts.

Content

MA Interaction Design Communication provides an opportunity for experimental practice in an area of design that increasingly explores the intersection of the physical and digital domains. With a focus on synthesising thought through rigorous design prototyping (making), digital processes and user perspectives, the course is highly reflective of interdisciplinary practice within the contemporary design, media and communications industries.

The integrated approach of the course to critical thinking provides you with the opportunity to work with critical ideas in an applied design context – for example psycho-geographic practice as empirical research or engaging with other critical theories of space to generate user perspectives. This ensures that ideation processes take on both the macro as well as micro opportunities for innovation and speculation crucial to building a portfolio of highly engaged work.

As well as placing you in a position to work across the board spectrum of interaction, design and communication the course is just as interested in design questions as design answers. This means that the course also prepares you for progression to further design research at MPhil/PhD level as well as to advanced self-directed experimental practice.

LCC has an outstanding team of practitioners and published researchers and enjoys a powerful programme of visiting speakers. 1. Decision making under uncertainty

This course will introduce you to the intellectual perspectives and methods that underpin the practice of making decisions essential for business management. In this course you will explore the many different disciplinary and methodological traditions that should inform effective analyses of the business world. You will also learn how informed thinking and analysis will assist you in making decisions and delivering better business outcomes.

2. Business strategic management

This course integrates all key business disciplines with courses such as dynamic strategic management, developing leadership skills with people and resources, strategic marketing, financial analysis and decision-making, and global economics. You will develop the skills expected of senior managers and be capable of developing a career in any leading organisation.

3. Strategic foresight

You will be presented with first-hand experience of business leaders, many of them our alumni, of how to face an uncertain future. This course includes guest lectures from successful organisations that will introduce you to key issues in business, including:

The MA Global Media Business, awarded by the University of Westminster is the final award, of a two-year programme managed jointly by Westminster and the Communication University of China (CUC). Conferred by the University of Westminster, the Masters degree is also licensed and recognised by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.

Media professionals and media firms are united in their need to acquire the commercial, strategic and managerial skills to prosper in an industry undergoing constant fundamental change. This course is designed to address these needs, developing entrepreneurial leaders equipped to deal with the complex and novel challenges presented by new technologies, consumer behaviour, and evolving business models.

The course will enable you to identify and analyse strategic and operational problems and opportunities, understand, quantify and access national and international media markets, and use foresight and planning techniques to understand and respond to change. As well as being able to manage complex media projects, you will also have the skills to engage in strategic direction setting, deploy business-planning skills, and excel in leadership and implementation.

The course is delivered by academic staff with lengthy experience of advising and managing media organisations. Teaching methods are based around practical problems and include in-class exercises and individuals and group projects and assessment. Assignments will enable you to develop and apply your skills in creative project development and business planning.

The MA Global Media Business is a full-time course, delivered using a combination of full-time and intensive block mode teaching. Although a collaborative programme, the final degree is assessed and awarded by the University of Westminster, and is governed by its regulations and quality assurance procedures.

Course content

The course provides a rounded suite of managerial and commercial skills, rooted in a critical understanding of today's media and content industries, building on our role as a leader in UK media research. Practice-based assignments, such as the integrating business-planning project, play an essential role in enabling you to apply ideas and learning in a creative fashion.

The course consists of eight credit-bearing modules and an additional key skills module which includes the use of quantitative methods and software tools.

Modules

Delivery of the MA in Global Media Business is divided between Beijing and Westminster’s Harrow campus. The first semester is taught by UK faculty staff making regular visits to Beijing. They deliver the programme in intensive teaching blocks, typically of 2-4 days teaching.

Block mode teaching is interspersed by guided independent study and project work. Downloadable lectures and supplementary information is provided via the University’s Virtual Learning Environment. Tutors are also available for remote tutorials using services such as Collaborate, Skype or WeChat.
