As a leading global power, the United States and its foreign affairs have a significant impact upon international relations, both in terms of policy and academic scholarship.
This significance has grown in the years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and the subsequent “war on terror” in ways that have been reflected in the development of the academic literature and in the increased level of interest in the subject area. With a high concentration of US Foreign Policy experts among PAIS academics, the department is in a unique position to bring cutting-edge, in-depth knowledge and discussion to postgraduate study in this field.
This programme focuses on US foreign policy in the context of national security as well as wider aspects of the country’s foreign policy and its impact in the areas of the economy, international relations, and particularly security. Some of the questions you will tackle include:
This programme is designed to introduce you to theories, issues and processes connected with diplomacy and foreign policy. It is especially relevant if you are thinking about, or currently working in, diplomacy, international NGOs, and global policy and politics.
Distinguished diplomatic and foreign policy practitioners contribute to elements of the programme, which may include student trips to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London, or international organisations in Geneva.
You will take five taught modules each assessed by a 5,000 word essay. The programme culminates in the writing of a 20,000-word dissertation in a subject area of your own choosing.

The PGCE Secondary (Modern Foreign Languages) is an innovative and intensive nine-month course preparing graduates for the demands of teaching in the secondary sector. The PGCE Modern Foreign Languages will provide student teachers with an appropriate knowledge of a range of theories and experiences in practical teaching situations to allow pupils to achieve their potential in modern foreign languages and develop a love of languages.
You will be awarded a PGCE and recommended for Qualified Teacher Status, enabling you to teach in schools on completion of the course.
The course is organised in partnership with schools around Kent and Medway (where undertaken in Canterbury), where you will spend 24 out of the 36 weeks teaching in two different schools.
All PGCE courses cover three main areas: Curriculum Studies, Professional Studies and Enhanced Studies. However, all learning on the course is designed to complement professional practice and the academic study will be informed by and inform practice.
PGCE students will be placed in two schools for a mixture of blocked time and serial (e.g. one day a week) time adding up to meet the current Government requirement for a minimum 120 days in school.
You can exit the PGCE courses with one of two awards. The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is awarded to those students who gain less than 40 Level 7credits, but who pass all modules, gaining 100 or 120 Level 6 credits. If you achieve 40 or 60 Level 7 credits and pass all the modules, you will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). All students completing a PGCE will also be recommended for QTS.
The course is for people who want to become qualified teachers.
• Professional Studies
Professional Studies sessions aim to inform you about aspects of professional practice which are central to your work, whatever your subject, including how do we learn, how do we include all children, how is teaching a professional activity, how can education be organised and how can learning be assessed.
• Curriculum Studies
This module involves work in studying key concepts that underpin the various curricula and syllabi for your subject. The sessions allow discussion of different pedagogies and allow reflection on differing school approaches to the subject.
• Enhanced Studies
The module enables you to choose an area of personal interest to you to study this in more depth through a research project based in a school.
Across the PGCE year there is an equivalent of 12 weeks of taught input which take place at university on the Canterbury Campus. The teaching on these days will be a mixture of seminar and workshop activity. There will also be a small number of lecture inputs.
Across the PGCE year there is the equivalent of 24 weeks spent in school. Student teachers will learn in a variety of ways in school, including from experienced mentors, through observing others and through experience. There is also a degree of individual support for learning offered in this course provided by mentors in school and the university tutors.
Tutors and mentors who lead the learning on this programme are all qualified teachers.
You will be assessed in two main ways via academic assignments and assessment of your teaching.
You will submit academic assignments for 20 credits in each curriculum, professional and enhanced studies modules. Each submission will include a written element, but you may also be assessed via presentations or practical performances as relevant to your chosen subject options.
Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to teach in schools as qualified teachers

Do you want to share your passion for foreign languages by teaching French or Spanish? If so, our PGCE Secondary Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) is the course for you. We also support German if you have an A Level in French or Spanish (and could therefore offer these as a second language).
By teaching languages you’ll introduce your pupils to other cultures they may not have experienced before as well as improving their language skills. In an increasingly global jobs market, people who have abilities in foreign languages are in demand, so your ability to inspire a love of language in pupils will also provide them with the skills they need have every opportunity to succeed in the future.
Assignments and school-centred activities are structured around the development of your School Experience Progress Journal (SEPJ) which demonstrates your progress against the nationally agreed competences (the Teachers’ Standards), which all teachers must meet throughout their career. A system of continuous review and assessment of progress in the SEPJ will support your growing ability to take responsibility for your own development.
In addition to the above, for entry onto a teaching course you will also be required to pass the Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy.
Pre-Interview School Experience
For secondary teacher training there is an expectation that you will have had some general experience of working with secondary age students in a school setting. In preparation for the selection interview you are required to engage in a teaching episode, observed by an experienced qualified teacher.
As part of the selection procedure, the interview panel will expect you to demonstrate your knowledge of languages and will assess personal qualities such as the potential to relate well to secondary age students, enthusiasm, sensitivity, communication skills and robustness and resilience for teaching.
Applicants must also meet The National College for Teaching and Leadership requirements for initial teacher training, which means being medically fit and successfully completing an enhanced disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
Modules are assessed through a range of directed tasks and targeted assignments. Trainee teachers are also required to complete a profile of evidence towards the achievement of the Standards required by the National College for Teaching and Leadership for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Evidence for the Standards is verified by mentors..
