The University of Liverpool Management School is one of an elite group of institutions worldwide to be AACSB-Accredited.

The Certificate in Business Administration Football Industries course provides those who hold an MBA (or international equivalent), with the opportunity to study the MBA Football Industries football-related modules. The modules, which are delivered in partnership with The National Football centre, St George’s Park, focus on aspects of the football industry such as professionalism, business and marketing. The certificate is also suitable for those seeking to work in, or those already working in football, with modules suitable for clubs, governing bodies or related marketing, media and sponsorship companies.

Our partnership enables CBA(FI) students to benefit from the expertise of one of the sport’s biggest governing bodies through guests speakers and practical learning opportunities as well as developing distinct pathways from education into employment. Courses like Sports Operations Management, currently run with the assistance of UEFA, give practical insight into managing some of the world’s biggest sports events.

The FIMBA programme is the top ranked sports MBA in the UK and the top-ranked football master’s in the world (SportBusiness International’s 2015 Postgraduate Sports Course Rankings).

If you wish to gain industry experience our placement scheme will assist you in this. CBA graduates have an excellent record in terms of either gaining employment in the football industry or developing their existing careers in football.

CBA students are taught alongside students studying the prestigious MBA Football Industries (FiMBA) programme. CBA students therefore benefit from this network as well as gaining access to the FiMBA Alumni Network, made up of over 300 graduates, most of whom are currently working in football.

Taken full-time, the programme runs from the end of September to the start of May with a one month break over the Christmas period, and students on average will need to be in Liverpool for one full day a week. Students who already possess football industry experience may instead choose to start the programme in mid-November.

Alongside the taught aspects of the programme, CBA students will also benefit from:

- A comprehensive programme of guest speakers drawn from top football executives throughout the world
- A series of football industry visits and networking events (including a stand at Soccerex’s Global Forum in Manchester)
- A dedicated football industry archive
- A placement co-ordinator and football-specific careers advice

The 12 month Professional Master of The FBA is divided into 4 modules. In order to deliver the best football business leaders of tomorrow, we believe it is essential for our students to gain knowledge of the football industry across all three dimensions: the past, as a cultural sensibility is essential to understand the origins and history of the sport; the present, in order to discover all football stakeholders and analyse the best practices; and future, because in this ever moving industry, it is crucial to come with an innovative mind, with new ideas and solutions to better address today’s key issues and develop tomorrow’s opportunities.

By combining this knowledge with participation at Soccerex events, our students will be prepared to start their provided internship (Module 3) where they will be able to use their acquired skills and contacts, get a foot in the industry and learn first-hand how it works.

Finally, the fourth module combines a Student Business Project with additional industry specifics for students to expand their knowledge of. The SBP will be sanctioned by one of our Partner Network members and will give students the opportunity to work in teams on a real project given by a football club, federation, or other football-related organization, thereby allowing them to keep moving forward into the football industry.

Education. For life.

At The FBA, we are well aware of how fast the football industry keeps growing and changing. Yet, contrary to how other professional industries such as law, medicine, or accounting are set up, football has been lacking a learning structure, which allows its professionals to continuously re-educate themselves and truly understand how new trends or laws can influence their business success. Therefore, our commitment to our alumni is to give them free lifetime access to course material so they can stay ahead of the game and exchange ideas and opinions with younger generations, thereby creating a unique, continuous learning environment which benefits everyone involved.

Online program

An innovative way of learning.

The FBA is based on a model of eLearning for Modules 1 and 2, resulting in several direct advantages for our students while maintaining all the advantages of a physical program.

Business Events

What is a better way to break into the football industry than participating in the world’s leading football business events?

The Football Business Academy is proud to have partnered with Soccerex, which has been bringing together the football industry for over 20 years. The presence of key stakeholders such as football clubs, federations, leagues, sponsors, agencies, suppliers, start-ups and so forth ensure all of the industry’s sectors are represented, with their decision makers looking to network, gain insight and socialize. Moreover, each Soccerex event has a wide range of panel discussions and presentations in which the latest industry developments are addressed, translating into an additional and invaluable learning experience for our students.

For The Football Business Academy it is really important that our students have access to Soccerex. That is why we invite them all to reunite there regularly, and to take this opportunity to develop their career and portfolio of contacts.

Please find below the list of regular attendees you will get the chance to meet at Soccerex events.
To learn more about Soccerex, visit http://www.soccerex.com

Field Trips

At The FBA, students are trained to the reality of the market. Visits to football organizations are a crucial part of the formation. Indeed, field trips are the opportunity for you to learn from live theaters. You will aslo see how the different concepts and practices learned during the courses are put in place in major clubs and governing bodies. The FBA also encourages these initiatives as a way to position yourself in the market and broaden their network.

Ideally located at the heart of a region considered to be the world capital of sport – with an easy access to neighboring countries – The FBA organizes field trips for its students to major football organizations and the best-managed football clubs serving as a benchmark.

Course content

Financial and Human Capital Management
This module develops students’ understanding of the ways in which financial and management information can be used to achieve competitive advantage. The module also examines the evolution of human resource management, human capital management, and their interaction with accounting and finance.

Leadership and Influence in Sport
The aim of this module is to understand the conceptualisation of leadership within the sporting and business world via the drivers of influence, mutuality and future.

Sustainable Stadium and Event Management
The aim of this module is to explore current and future issues around sustainable sport management. The course uses the concept of sustainability to explore key contemporary issues such as: types of sports venues, construction and refurbishment, venue design, event delivery, stakeholder management, venue marketing and venue management.

Global Strategic Sports Marketing Management
Many sports brands face domestic markets that are saturated, highly competitive and with little potential to grow sales revenues, a situation that may see them fall behind in the marketplace. Their main opportunity to grow is to target overseas markets in order to attract new customers and develop new revenues streams. Many sports leagues and brands sell the television rights for their marches to media companies in deals worth in excess of £2billion, who in turn sell these rights in as many as 100 different countries.

Corporate Strategy in a Sporting Context
In order to be an effective sport manager, it is essential to possess a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the importance of corporate strategy in management, and to demonstrate how this can be applied in the area of international football and sporting management. Students will extend research skills alongside new analytical techniques in order to analyse the business environment. Students will be expected to show a critical awareness of how to carry out complex analysis of this information and explain the current strategic position of the organisation.

Globalisation of Sport Management
The rapid growth of the sport industry in recent times has led to a need for sport to be studied in a global context. With globalisation as a key concept to be addressed, this module will emphasise the need for sport to be managed effectively in order for optimal performance to be achieved. It is essential for sport managers to fully apprehend the influence of globalisation on sports and the sport industry through acquiring and applying contemporary business analysis and decision making tools.

Research Methods and Dissertation
The dissertation allows you to design and conduct an independent piece of academic research, providing an opportunity to develop and demonstrate advanced scholarship skills. This combined research methods and dissertation module provides subject-specific methods training in preparation for the completion of a dissertation within the domains of marketing, entrepreneurship and leisure management. The research topic that you select must align with the title of the programme on which you are enrolled. The module begins with a series of taught research methods sessions, during which a research proposal is produced. This proposal then guides the development of a clearly defined and evidenced study purpose, a critical review of the extant literature, and a robust methodology. Data is then collected, analysed, interpreted and applied to the study purpose, and a 15-20,000-word research report (dissertation) is produced.

Madrid Experience

During the months of May, June and July, students will enjoy the truly unique opportunity to live and learn in Madrid, Spain’s capital city and home to the 10-time European football champions, Real Madrid. Whilst undertaking a 30 ECTS credit Diploma in Sport Management at the Real Madrid Graduate School – which students would earn in addition to the MSc International Sport Management degree – the invaluable learning enhancement experience is expected to provide a further foundation for employability prospects in the global sport marketplace. With classes taught at the Real Madrid Graduate School’s facilities including the Real Madrid Sports City in the Valdebebas district of Madrid and the famous Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, students will obtain access to leading executives from the football club. The Madrid experience will provide a vital international angle on the sport business, aiding students as they work towards completing their final MSc International Sport Management dissertation in September.

The MA Sports Coaching degree is the new programme developed to support the strategic objectives outlined in the UK Coaching Framework. Sports Coach UK have provided the strategy for the UK to be considered the number one coaching system in the World by 2016. Our challenge is to support this and produce postgraduates with a high degree of knowledge and understanding so that they can challenge and innovate their own coaching practice. This will require knowledge of leadership, communication, pedagogy, allied sport sciences and relevant management principles. Students will be afforded the opportunity to work in an environment relevant to their developmental needs.

INDUSTRY LINKS

The School of Sport, Tourism and The Outdoors has strong links with a large number of sports organisations, including professional sports teams, public and private sector sports providers and grassroots sports clubs. We regularly invite guest speakers from industry to speak to students within the modules on this course.

This represents a valuable opportunity for students to meet potential employers and learn about life in the sports industry. For example, we have had guest lectures given by representatives of Wigan Warriors Rugby League Club, Bolton Wanderers Football Club, Blackburn Rovers Football Club, Lancashire Football Association, The Rugby Football League and Preston City Council.

The MA Sports coaching also benefits from a number of unique opportunities within the school. Within the school there are strong links with The Institute of Coaching and Performance (ICaP) which is Chaired and Directed by David Collins. The school is also responsible the delivery for the PGDip in Elite Coaching (UKCC Level 4 Coach Education: Pentium Group). As both ICAP and PGDip are central to the school there are a number of opportunities to share current research and practice from within the elite coaching environment.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

All face-to-face delivery will use several types of media to encourage learning. The main vehicles will be through seminars, debates, practical workshops and problem-based learning. This will be supported with some electronic learning activities and resources. Those who choose the blended mode of delivery will be taught through a combination of interactive electronic learning activities and face-to-face delivery on residential blocks (for example weekends).

The use of guest speakers on the course is designed to facilitate networking opportunities for students to meet with potential employers.

Every effort will be made to apply theory to practice, and in some cases, practice to theory. There will be a requirement for independent learning throughout the programme, culminating in the Dissertation.

There are no examinations on this course. Every effort has been made to ensure that assessments are relevant to the coaching sector. For example, coach reports, case study reports, debates, critical reflections and presentations are used throughout the programme.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The full-time MA in Sports Coaching course is a 12 month programme comprising three parts. The first two parts are the taught element and the final part is the research element. The taught element focuses on key aspects of sports coaching. In addition, students will have the opportunity to engage in consultancy or sport-specific placement. For full-time students, the taught element is normally completed over a nine month period starting in October. Part-time students will normally attend on a one day per week basis and complete the taught element in two years. Students who complete the taught element of the programme, in part or in its entirety, may graduate with either a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in Sports Coaching.

Students wishing to complete the MA in Sports Coaching must complete the research element. The research element comprises a dissertation. Full-time students will normally complete this in the three months that follow the taught element, whilst part-time students complete this during the course of an academic session.

An integral part of the course is the Consultancy Project, which is an opportunity for students to work on a “live” sports coaching / coaching science project for an external client, agreed using a project specification negotiated between the student, client and academic supervisor.
