The modules are designed to expand the mechanical knowledge and understanding of foot pathology as well as interventions used in the management of complex foot presentations. There will be practical sessions in balance assessment, plantar pressure analysis, rigidity casting and gait analysis. Students will be encouraged to develop and challenge current thinking of the diabetic foot. Modules are delivered at weekends with some attendance to campus required as well as supported distance learning tasks.

In this accelerated course, we offer our students a balance of theory and practice experience. You will graduate as a qualified podiatrist who is competent in your clinical skills and able to use contemporary clinical evidence to inform your practice.

The University of Brighton developed and awarded the first degrees in podiatry in the UK and we have been recognised by podiatry's professional bodies for the standard of our teaching. Facilities

Leaf Hospital

You will have access to the Leaf Hospital in Eastbourne, our own fully-staffed clinical facility, which offers a podiatry service and a private practice physiotherapy service. This gives you a further opportunity to gain practical experience treating patients throughout your degree.

The Leaf Hospital has two main clinics and three further consulting rooms, allowing up to 28 patients to be seen at any one time. Clinical practice is supported by a complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including gait analysis, imaging and more.

You will benefit from use of the orthotics department, where you will produce high quality orthotics and insoles for patients as part of the practical element of your course.

On the first floor there is a fully equipped operating theatre for minor surgical procedures and a human anatomy lab where you will study prosection and take part in lower limb dissection.

Human Movement Laboratory

The Human Movement Laboratory is used widely by our physiotherapy, occupational therapy and podiatry students, and is also used for commercial consultancy.

In the lab you will use the latest technology to measure and assess all aspects of human movement, joints, muscles, soft tissue structure and nerves. The laboratory has equipment for conducting cardio-pulmonary investigations including Cosmed metabolic system and spirometry.

Careers and Employability

Our graduates enjoy excellent employment prospects, typically securing roles in advanced practice, clinical teaching, research, education and training, and a variety of positions in the NHS and private sector.

They are working in the UK and worldwide in Europe and Canada, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Singapore.

Podiatrists engage with patient care in a wide range of practices from independent work in the community or private practice to multidisciplinary work in a hospital setting. The scope of podiatry practice varies from general foot care (nail, callus, corns) to musculoskeletal care (for example, tendinopathy, provision of insoles, orthoses and footwear), minor surgery (for example, toenail removal) and wound care (for exampe, diabetic foot ulcers).

With further study and extensive training, graduates can train to become a podiatric surgeon, who is allowed to perform the surgical treatment of the foot and its associated structures.

Graduates of this course are also equipped for further study at MPhil and PhD level.

Course structure

Students normally study three one-week modules each year, typically separated by eight to twelve weeks. You can choose all podiatry options or include interdisciplinary options which may require you to attend one day per week rather than the week-long study block structure of podiatry.

To be awarded the Podiatry MSc, you must successfully complete three compulsory modules, plus three options and a dissertation. Alternatively, you can study individual modules, being awarded a PGDip on completion of six modules, or a PGCert on completion of three specified modules.

The course is delivered in a variety of ways, typically via e-learning, lectures, seminars, simulation in our high-tech Human Movement Laboratory, and practice-based learning in our Leaf Hospital.

The MCh Orth Course in Dundee (accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of England) is a clinically-based Masters degree that encompasses taught, clinical attachment and research elements, which provide orthopaedic surgeons with in-depth knowledge of the latest advances in surgical and biomechanical techniques.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, to reflect the multi-disciplinary aspect of the research carried out at IMAR, where the majority of the MCh Orth projects are conducted, the respective staff were returned into Unit of Assessment 25 (General Engineering - Biomedical Engineering) and Unit of Assessment 8 (Primary Care and Other Community Based Clinical Subjects) where 90% and 85% of our quality profile was deemed of international class. This is an excellent outcome taking into consideration that IMAR was only established in 2003 in support of the MCh Orth course.

How you will be assessed

The programme assessment is made up of three elements: two written MCQs (one per semester) using the latest e-assessment technology and iPads, OSCE and a thesis. Candidates will be examined orally on the subject of thesis by a committee consisting of a convenor, an external and internal examiners. Students are required to pass each element to qualify for the award of the degree. There is no resit facility.

COURSE SUMMARY

This is a unique podiatry programme at master’s level leading to Health and Care Profession Council registration. Currently the only programme in the UK.

This is a 3 year full-time programme in which you will be developing practical skills with patients from the first semester (in the University in-house clinics) and then on placement within health services in subsequent years. The placements will be in wide variety of specialisms and you will be supervised by experienced and specialist podiatrists. Aligned with this is the academic component of acquisition of knowledge, the development of critical enquiry, research and application of research into practice. You will be taught by national and internationally recognised academics who are subject specialists. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in the Foot and Ankle Research Programme, led by Professor Chris Nester. You will be taught by and have opportunity to work with senior post-doctoral researchers who, have published in peer reviewed journals and written books aligned to the profession. You will be supported by academic, personal tutors and placement supervisors in the development of skills for critical reflection in order to ensure ongoing professional and personal development, and enhance employability.

This non-standard 3 year full time programme will provide you with a master’s level academic qualification together with a professional practice qualification, which is a pre-requisite for registration to the Health and Care Professions Council. It will provide you with the knowledge, skills and attributes to become leaders in the podiatry profession with research and/or the clinical roles.

Our podiatry clinic adds a cutting-edge to your training, as well as providing a valuable asset to the local community.

Clinical gait analysis and research facility

This laboratory was part of a £1.5 million renovation of the podiatry clinical education and research spaces. The laboratory hosts the Salford Gait Analysis Service which provides quantitative gait analysis and consultation services for four National Health Service Trusts in the Manchester area.

The service supports the care of children with cerebral palsy by enabling assessment of their gait to input to their care pathways. We also offer gait and human movement assessment related to amputees, neuromuscular disorders (such as stroke) and a range of orthopaedics disorders.

The equipment includes:

  • 10 Qualisys OQUS motion analysis cameras
  • Four AMTI force plates embedded into the floor
  • Custom stairs that integrate with the force plates are available
  • Visual 3D real-time analysis software
  • Eight channel Noraxon Telemyo G2T wireless EMG system with associated foot switches and accelerometry
  • Tekscan pressure system.

Human movement laboratory

This is the original gait laboratory within the University, and is located adjacent to the prosthetics and orthotics clinical suite and technical workshops.

This lab is used for research, clinical and educational work and has:

  • 10 camera Vicon 612 motion analysis system
  • Two Kistler force plates (embedded into the floor)
  • Two Kistler force plates located in a purpose built portable walkway
  • 12 Xsens inertial measuring units
  • One eight-channel MIE telemetric electromyography system

Currently, BSc (Hons) students work within NHS services or the independent sector.

With this new programme it is anticipated that in addition to the above, the students will increase their employability in these areas and also increase their career progression. Teaching focuses on the principles of promoting skin integrity in patients of all ages. Topics covered include: the burden of chronic wounds: diabetic foot disease, venous disease, pressure injury, assessment and diagnostic techniques, barriers to healing; clinical, lifestyle, organisational, wound physiology, and microbiology, cutaneous manifestations of systemic disease, inflammatory skin conditions, skin/wound infections, chronic oedema, psychological impact of wounds and associated skin conditions, patient education and compliance.

Core skills for specialist practice will be developed including decision making and problem solving skills, leadership and communication skills, information retrieval, critical analysis and application of evidence based practice, audit and research methods and an ability to support and influence service improvement amongst others.

The MSc Clinical Skin Integrity & Wound Management tailors knowledge, skills and assessment to the needs of NHS employers and the global healthcare sector to provide a highly relevant curriculum that facilitates the development of specialist practitioners and increases student’s employability.

The course is designed to provide clinicians with a better understanding of core clinical skin integrity and wound management. This flexible MSc course provides an opportunity for podiatrists to develop their own programme of study at master’s level when studying from their own home or work base. It does not lead to registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.

This innovative course will allow you to choose from a range of modules to develop your own master’s qualification, or to customise the course content in response to modern day podiatry practice, keeping you up to date with the latest developments and improving your career prospects.

The course can be studied at a time most suitable for you, through a distance e-learning route with tutor support and no requirement to attend QMU.

Teaching Learning and Assessment

Distance e-learning modules will be taught using QMU’s virtual learning environment which requires access to the internet at a time most suitable to you. The virtual learning environment will be used to deliver course content, group tutorial discussion, tutor support and course work assignment submissions. Your performance will be assessed by coursework assignments, however, some modules require an examination. Class sizes are usually less than 15 students.

Teaching Hours and Attendance

Course content will depend on the module size. Single modules worth 15 credits will run for a shorter time, usually 3 to 4 months, whereas double modules, which are worth 30 credits, will run for approximately 6 months. Double modules will begin in September and single modules can begin in either September or January.

Links with industry/professional bodies

The Pharmacology for Podiatrists module has been approved by the Health and Care Professions Council for annotation on their professional register.

This programme is delivered by the Institute of Motion Analysis & Research within the Department of Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgery at the TORT Centre.

The Institute of Motion Analysis and Research (IMAR) was established in 2003 by combining the Foot Pressure Analysis Laboratory and the Dundee Gait Laboratory at the Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery Department, University of Dundee. However, gait analysis has been at the forefront of development in this field for the past 25 years and foot pressure measurement for the past 16 years, which gives us a tremendous bank of knowledge on which to draw. IMAR's main goal is to promote excellence in teaching and research and to provide a comprehensive clinical service in the field of motion analysis.

A third laboratory dedicated to Sports Biomechanics is currently nearing completion to augment and support the current facilities of IMAR.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, to reflect the multi-disciplinary aspect of the research carried out, the respective staff at IMAR were returned into Unit of Assessment 25 (General Engineering - Biomedical Engineering) and Unit of Assessment 8 (Primary Care and Other Community Based Clinical Subjects) where 90% and 85% of our quality profile was deemed of international class. This is an excellent outcome taking into consideration that IMAR was only established in 2003.

Aims of the Programme

The programme is intended to provide students with an understanding and knowledge of the technological aspects, and the fundamental and advanced concepts of motion measurement and clinical analysis.

Methods of Assessment

The modules are assessed by a combination of written examination and continuous assessment. In addition, the research project, undertaken by those studying towards an MSc, is assessed by dissertation and oral examination.

Coursework:
At the end of each unit you submit an assignment to your tutor for assessment, along with an assignment card containing a signed declaration that the work submitted is your own. A copy of the assignment is returned to you with your marks and the original is retained by the University. The assignments form the coursework element of the final assessment for both courses.

Examinations:
Written examinations are held during March/ April each year in Dundee. Under special circumstances exams can also be sat by arrangement at approved examination centres (for example, at British Council Offices) outside, and in the United Kingdom. If you sit an examination outside Dundee you will be responsible for paying any costs the examination centre may charge

You must complete all the modules in a module group, including the assignment, before you can sit the exam(s) for that particular group. You may choose to sit all the exams at one time or spread them throughout your course .

Dissertation:
The MSc project is assessed by dissertation and viva (oral examination). Vivas are held in Dundee.

The course is delivered in a variety of ways, typically via e-learning, lectures, seminars, simulation in our high-tech Human Movement Laboratory, and practice-based learning in our Leaf Hospital.

Facilities

Leaf Hospital

You will have access to the Leaf Hospital in Eastbourne, our own fully-staffed clinical facility, which offers a podiatry service and a private practice physiotherapy service. This gives you a further opportunity to gain practical experience treating patients throughout your degree.

The Leaf Hospital has two main clinics and three further consulting rooms, allowing up to 28 patients to be seen at any one time. Clinical practice is supported by a complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including gait analysis, imaging and more.

You will benefit from use of the orthotics department, where you will produce high quality orthotics and insoles for patients as part of the practical element of your course.

On the first floor there is a fully equipped operating theatre for minor surgical procedures and a human anatomy lab where you will study prosection and take part in lower limb dissection.

Human Movement Laboratory

The Human Movement Laboratory is used widely by our physiotherapy, occupational therapy and podiatry students, and is also used for commercial consultancy.

In the lab you will use the latest technology to measure and assess all aspects of human movement, joints, muscles, soft tissue structure and nerves. The laboratory has equipment for conducting cardio-pulmonary investigations including Cosmed metabolic system and spirometry.

This programme is based on the philosophy that the total care for the athlete requires a multidisciplinary approach underpinned by evidenced based medicine.

Successful candidates will have the opportunity in the future, possibly as early as 2018, to sit a Fellowship examination in Podiatric Sports Medicine which will be awarded by The Directorate of Podiatric Medicine, College of Podiatry, London.

Students will have the opportunity to transfer from the PGCert to an MSc/PGDip in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

The programme is delivered by Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) within the William Harvey Research Institute and as such, will place the School at the forefront of provision of Podiatric Sports Medicine (PSM) within the UK. Working in sport is a largely practical discipline and the programme's emphasis lies firmly on regular clinical experience. Students will benefit from regular contact with members of Sports and Exercise Medicine at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), as well as visiting clinicians and lecturers who are experienced Sports Medicine specialists.

This course is designed to offer a mastery of foundation concepts and skills in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Lectures will be delivered by national and international experts; from cutting edge basic scientists to podiatric surgeons, sports physicians, physiotherapists and other health professionals working with world-class athletes. Our staff will work closely with students to nurture potential research interests and to develop clinical ability in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Course content covers detailed assessment and management of sports injuries of the lower limb, especially foot, ankle and lower leg with imaging in sports medicine to assist in supporting clinical diagnosis.

The PSM programme will offer a modular PGCert structure with an innovative practical component involving clinical shadowing and mentoring. Students will be exposed to unique clinical learning opportunities, such as the monthly inter-disciplinary combined clinic, that will challenge and sharpen diagnostic skills. An interactive and supportive clinician-student relationship will be a feature of clinics on the postgraduate programme.

-To provide a sound clinical base in Podiatric Sports Medicine on which to build future clinical practice with confidence in making a diagnosis and thinking beyond biomechanics.

Utilising policy analysis methods as well as key concepts and theoretical frameworks students will critically examine comparative evidence to enhance their knowledge and understanding of higher education principles, processes and practices drawing on individual national case studies. This module provides an overview of the methods and methodologies applied to research in higher education. The meanings and associations between methods are discussed and their position in wider epistemological paradigms is considered. Students will be given an overview of the development of these methods and methodologies in higher education and will develop applied research skills on methods relevant to their practice or interests. Conclusions will be drawn on the methodological opportunities and challenges of the presented research methods and their supplementary to wider educational and social research will be critically examined.

• Educational and Social Research Methods

This module provides you with the opportunity to consider the aims and intentions of educational research, critique published journal articles, and examine the role of evidence from research as a basis for improving education and social care. You will gain grounding in educational research issues, methods and strategies together with knowledge of how to match intended outcomes with specific educational questions and methods of investigation.

• Postgraduate Major Study

This module supports students in the preparation and submission of their Master's Major project and involves a dissertation of 14,000 words or the equivalent. The Major Project enables students to demonstrate the ability to raise significant and meaningful questions in relation to their specialism which may involve working at the current limits of theoretical and / or research understanding. It will involve the ability to develop solutions to ethical dilemmas likely to arise in their research or professional practice. The project enables students to expand or redefine existing knowledge, to develop new approaches to changing workplace situations and / or to contribute to the development of best practice. It asks the student to communicate these processes in a clear and elegant fashion and to evaluate their work from the perspective of an autonomous reflective learner. Students' research topics must be negotiated with their appointed supervisor. An application for ethical approval and ethics discussion paper must then be submitted. The project may take the form of a written dissertation, a formal presentation and full research paper, an exhibition, a performance, an artefact or the development of software, or other written, aural or visual material. The project may be formed from a combination of these modes but will normally include a written component.

Assessment

You will be assessed in a number of ways, from systematic literature reviews to reflective accounts on your professional practice, to ensure you're learning effectively. Other forms of assessment may include presentations, critical analyses of existing research, producing a dissemination poster and a research project. Each module comprises of one summative assessment and one core formative assessment. The assessment of the modules places emphasis on authenticity of the assessment tasks. Assessment are designed to strengthen your ability to conduct research in higher education settings.

What you'll study

You’ll study for either qualification in three parts, each worth 60 points.

Part 1

In Part 1 you'll study four courses and gain the foundation knowledge you need for Part 2, where you'll focus on either Marketing or Management. Your study during Part 1 will help you confirm your choice about which degree you go on to complete.

If you successfully complete Part 1, but don't continue your studies, you'll be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Global Business (PGCertGBus).

Part 2

In your second trimester you'll complete the set courses for your chosen degree.

Management students will study innovation and value creation, sustainability, supply chains, and leadership in a changing global environment.

Marketing students will focus on market analysis, consumer behaviour, communications, and current marketing theory and practice in a global context.

Part 3

In Part 3 you'll complete courses in strategy in a global marketplace, and effective management across cultures. In this trimester you'll also complete a 30-point practical project. You can choose to do a consultancy project, where you'll be partnered with an organisation and use theory to resolve a business issue. Or you can complete a research project where you'll investigate a theoretical aspect of a current topic under debate in management or marketing.

If you are enrolled in either Master's but don't manage to complete it, you may have enough points to be a awarded a PGCertGBus.

Duration and workload

The Masters' degrees can be completed in three trimesters or 12 months of full-time study.

Your workload will be 150 hours per course so you can expect to study 40–45 hours a week for much of the year.

What you'll study

You’ll study for either qualification in three parts, each worth 60 points.

Part 1

In Part 1 you'll study four courses and gain the foundation knowledge you need for Part 2, where you'll focus on either Marketing or Management. Your study during Part 1 will help you confirm your choice about which degree you go on to complete.

If you successfully complete Part 1, but don't continue your studies, you'll be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Global Business (PGCertGBus).

Part 2

In your second trimester you'll complete the set courses for your chosen degree.

Management students will study innovation and value creation, sustainability, supply chains, and leadership in a changing global environment.

Marketing students will focus on market analysis, consumer behaviour, communications, and current marketing theory and practice in a global context.

Part 3

In Part 3 you'll complete courses in strategy in a global marketplace, and effective management across cultures. In this trimester you'll also complete a 30-point practical project. You can choose to do a consultancy project, where you'll be partnered with an organisation and use theory to resolve a business issue. Or you can complete a research project where you'll investigate a theoretical aspect of a current topic under debate in management or marketing.

If you are enrolled in either Master's but don't manage to complete it, you may have enough points to be a awarded a PGCertGBus.

Duration and workload

The Masters' degrees can be completed in three trimesters or 12 months of full-time study.

Your workload will be 150 hours per course so you can expect to study 40–45 hours a week for much of the year.

Careers

This qualification paves the way for careers in global logistics, international business development, import/export management and international brand management.
