The modules are designed to expand the mechanical knowledge and understanding of foot pathology as well as interventions used in the management of complex foot presentations. There will be practical sessions in balance assessment, plantar pressure analysis, rigidity casting and gait analysis. Students will be encouraged to develop and challenge current thinking of the diabetic foot. Modules are delivered at weekends with some attendance to campus required as well as supported distance learning tasks.

You will study the core areas necessary for professional practice: the clinical sciences, health psychology, medicine, pharmacology, surgery, orthopaedics, research methods and clinical practice.

This intensive programme runs over 45 weeks per year, for two years. Your time on the course will be balanced between campus-based study and clinical practice.

The course begins in September. Formal lectures are an integral part of the curriculum and you also learn through seminars, student presentations and interactive workshops, some of which will be shared with students on the undergraduate program. You will be assessed through essays, exams, practical reports, presentations and your professional development portfolio.

As a podiatry student you will also share some teaching with students on physiotherapy, occupational therapy and pharmacy courses, allowing you to exchange knowledge and expertise with students from other disciplines.

Your practical placements will be mainly at our own Leaf hospital and the local NHS trusts. Day placements for students are arranged with clinics and hospitals across the south-east England and London. There is also an opportunity for self-funded placement at the University of Malta.

Leaf Hospital:

You will have access to the Leaf Hospital in Eastbourne, our own fully-staffed clinical facility, which offers a podiatry service and a private practice physiotherapy service. This gives you a further opportunity to gain practical experience treating patients throughout your degree.

The Leaf Hospital has two main clinics and three further consulting rooms, allowing up to 28 patients to be seen at any one time. Clinical practice is supported by a complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including gait analysis, imaging and more.

You will benefit from use of the orthotics department, where you will produce high quality orthotics and insoles for patients as part of the practical element of your course.

On the first floor there is a fully equipped operating theatre for minor surgical procedures and a human anatomy lab where you will study prosection and take part in lower limb dissection.

Human Movement Laboratory:

The Human Movement Laboratory is used widely by our physiotherapy, occupational therapy and podiatry students, and is also used for commercial consultancy.

In the lab you will use the latest technology to measure and assess all aspects of human movement, joints, muscles, soft tissue structure and nerves. The laboratory has equipment for conducting cardio-pulmonary investigations including Cosmed metabolic system and spirometry.

Podiatrists engage with patient care in a wide range of practices from independent work in the community or private practice to multidisciplinary work in a hospital setting. The scope of podiatry practice varies from general foot care (nail, callus, corns) to musculoskeletal care (for example, tendinopathy, provision of insoles, orthoses and footwear), minor surgery (for example, toenail removal) and wound care (for exampe, diabetic foot ulcers).

With further study and extensive training, graduates can train to become a podiatric surgeon, who is allowed to perform the surgical treatment of the foot and its associated structures.

Graduates of this course are also equipped for further study at MPhil and PhD level.

Course structure

Students normally study three one-week modules each year, typically separated by eight to twelve weeks. You can choose all podiatry options or include interdisciplinary options which may require you to attend one day per week rather than the week-long study block structure of podiatry.

To be awarded the Podiatry MSc, you must successfully complete three compulsory modules, plus three options and a dissertation. Alternatively, you can study individual modules, being awarded a PGDip on completion of six modules, or a PGCert on completion of three specified modules.

The course is delivered in a variety of ways, typically via e-learning, lectures, seminars, simulation in our high-tech Human Movement Laboratory, and practice-based learning in our Leaf Hospital.

On graduation, you will be able to fulfil advanced professional and autonomous roles as a non-medical prescriber. You will be able to confidently select appropriate medications for patients based on relevant physical examination, assessment, history taking and diagnosis.

The course is approved by the College of Podiatry. An annual monitoring process is in place to ensure the course continues to meet the highest standards for professional training.

Course structure

Lectures will be kept to a minimum as we encourage student-centred learning by utilising action learning sets, online learning, tutorial group discussions, seminars, workshops, facilitated group work, role play, practical skills sessions and laboratory based work, enriched with key note lectures from subject specialists.

You will share your professional experiences with fellow students who are all qualified and experienced health professionals. This provides a multidisciplinary perspective to group discussions, lively debate and a collective learning experience.

In order to gain annotation as an independent prescriber, you must also complete a minimum of 90 hours of supervised practice within your clinical practise setting. This must be supervised by a designated medical practitioner (DMP) who you have identified and agreed with the course team.

We are known for our flexible approaches to practice-based learning, with course durations and intensities that can be adapted to your outside commitments. Several modules in the graduate programme, including one developed for this course, make extensive or even exclusive use of online resources as a teaching medium. However the specific approaches used will vary depending on the modules that you choose.

The MCh Orth Course in Dundee (accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of England) is a clinically-based Masters degree that encompasses taught, clinical attachment and research elements, which provide orthopaedic surgeons with in-depth knowledge of the latest advances in surgical and biomechanical techniques.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, to reflect the multi-disciplinary aspect of the research carried out at IMAR, where the majority of the MCh Orth projects are conducted, the respective staff were returned into Unit of Assessment 25 (General Engineering - Biomedical Engineering) and Unit of Assessment 8 (Primary Care and Other Community Based Clinical Subjects) where 90% and 85% of our quality profile was deemed of international class. This is an excellent outcome taking into consideration that IMAR was only established in 2003 in support of the MCh Orth course.

How you will be assessed

The programme assessment is made up of three elements: two written MCQs (one per semester) using the latest e-assessment technology and iPads, OSCE and a thesis. Candidates will be examined orally on the subject of thesis by a committee consisting of a convenor, an external and internal examiners. Students are required to pass each element to qualify for the award of the degree. There is no resit facility.

This flexible MSc course provides an opportunity for podiatrists to develop their own programme of study at masters level when studying from their own home or work base.

This innovative course will allow you to choose from a range of modules to develop your own masters qualification, or to customise the course content in response to modern day podiatry practice, keeping you up to date with the latest developments and improving your career prospects.

The course can be studied at a time most suitable for you, through a distance e-learning route with tutor support and no requirement to attend QMU, or if preferred, it can be studied through a mix of distance e-learning and block attendance at the University campus.

Teaching Learning and Assessment

Distance e-learning modules will be taught using QMU’s virtual learning environment which requires access to the internet at a time most suitable to you. The virtual learning environment will be used to deliver course content, group tutorial discussion, tutor support and course work assignment submissions. If you choose to study modules that require attendance, course content will be delivered through lecture presentations, seminars and tutorials. Your performance will be assessed by coursework assignments, however, some modules require an examination. Class sizes are usually less than 15 students.

Teaching Hours and Attendance

Course content will depend on the module size. Single modules worth 15 credits will run for a shorter time, usually 3 to 4 months, whereas double modules which are worth 30 credits will run for approximately 6 months. Double modules will begin in September and single modules can begin in either September or January. If you require attendance at the University, this will be in accordance with the academic timetable.

The Pharmacology for Podiatrists module has been approved by the Health and Care Professions Council for annotation on their professional register.

The Institute of Motion Analysis and Research (IMAR) was established in 2003 by combining the Foot Pressure Analysis Laboratory and the Dundee Gait Laboratory at the Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery Department, University of Dundee. However, gait analysis has been at the forefront of development in this field for the past 25 years and foot pressure measurement for the past 16 years, which gives us a tremendous bank of knowledge on which to draw. IMAR's main goal is to promote excellence in teaching and research and to provide a comprehensive clinical service in the field of motion analysis.

A third laboratory dedicated to Sports Biomechanics is currently nearing completion to augment and support the current facilities of IMAR.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, to reflect the multi-disciplinary aspect of the research carried out, the respective staff at IMAR were returned into Unit of Assessment 25 (General Engineering - Biomedical Engineering) and Unit of Assessment 8 (Primary Care and Other Community Based Clinical Subjects) where 90% and 85% of our quality profile was deemed of international class. This is an excellent outcome taking into consideration that IMAR was only established in 2003.

Aims of the Programme

The programme is intended to provide students with an understanding and knowledge of the technological aspects, and the fundamental and advanced concepts of motion measurement and clinical analysis.

Methods of Assessment

The modules are assessed by a combination of written examination and continuous assessment. In addition, the research project, undertaken by those studying towards an MSc, is assessed by dissertation and oral examination.

Coursework:
At the end of each unit you submit an assignment to your tutor for assessment, along with an assignment card containing a signed declaration that the work submitted is your own. A copy of the assignment is returned to you with your marks and the original is retained by the University. The assignments form the coursework element of the final assessment for both courses.

Examinations:
Written examinations are held during March/ April each year in Dundee. Under special circumstances exams can also be sat by arrangement at approved examination centres (for example, at British Council Offices) outside, and in the United Kingdom. If you sit an examination outside Dundee you will be responsible for paying any costs the examination centre may charge

You must complete all the modules in a module group, including the assignment, before you can sit the exam(s) for that particular group. You may choose to sit all the exams at one time or spread them throughout your course .

Dissertation:
The MSc project is assessed by dissertation and viva (oral examination). Vivas are held in Dundee.

Leaf Hospital:

You will have access to the Leaf Hospital in Eastbourne, our own fully-staffed clinical facility, which offers a podiatry service and a private practice physiotherapy service. This gives you a further opportunity to gain practical experience treating patients throughout your degree.

The Leaf Hospital has two main clinics and three further consulting rooms, allowing up to 28 patients to be seen at any one time. Clinical practice is supported by a complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including gait analysis, imaging and more.

You will benefit from use of the orthotics department, where you will produce high quality orthotics and insoles for patients as part of the practical element of your course.

On the first floor there is a fully equipped operating theatre for minor surgical procedures and a human anatomy lab where you will study prosection and take part in lower limb dissection.

Human Movement Laboratory:

The Human Movement Laboratory is used widely by our physiotherapy, occupational therapy and podiatry students, and is also used for commercial consultancy.

In the lab you will use the latest technology to measure and assess all aspects of human movement, joints, muscles, soft tissue structure and nerves. The laboratory has equipment for conducting cardio-pulmonary investigations including Cosmed metabolic system and spirometry.

Biomedical signals provide useful metrics in a wide range of health care scenarios. However, these signals are often affected by noise and require extensive signal processing to extract useful clinical diagnostic metrics. Read more
Biomedical signals provide useful metrics in a wide range of health care scenarios. However, these signals are often affected by noise and require extensive signal processing to extract useful clinical diagnostic metrics. Current signal processing techniques are either fixed by design or adaptive to variations known a priori. However, because of normal physiological variation, the characteristics of these signals are often non-stationary and more robust adaptive signal processing techniques are required to track many types of biomedical signals. As a clinical example, complications of the diabetic foot result in 20 lower limb amputations per day in the UK. The problem is exacerbated by the vascular and neurological damage that occurs in the diabetic foot, and the consequent loss of feeling results in trauma being unnoticed. Previous work by the principal investigator has demonstrated the efficacy of detecting the pre-cursors of ulceration through non-invasive measurement of blood flow using optical and ultrasonic techniques. However, extensive signal processing is required to convert the signals into a clinically interpretable form and lengthy analysis and clinical expertise was required to make the clinical diagnosis. If clinical diagnostics can be made to operate reliably in real-time preventative measures could be taken before ulceration occurs.

Recent advances in machine learning offer potential for artificially intelligent adaptive signal processing algorithms to track time varying biomedical signals and provide real-time detection of physiological abnormalities in at risk patients. This will allow for more rapid detection of physiological abnormalities allowing preventative measures to be applied early reducing the risk of more serious complications.

The Human Performance Laboratory (HPL) at QMUL combines the expertise of sports medicine clinicians, surgeons, engineers and sports scientists with state-of-the-art physiological testing and motion analysis equipment. This collaborative venture offers clinical, educational, research and athlete support service applications in the laboratory or field based settings.

The capabilities of the HPL can be broadly divided into two areas: musculoskeletal biomechanics and physiological testing.

Musculoskeletal biomechanics
The HPL carries 4 Codamotion Cx1 infra-red scanning units that are used extensively for 3-dimensional motion analysis. This system is fully integrated with 2 ground embedded Kistler force plates and a 16 channel wireless EMG system. The integration of these systems allows for full analysis of movement, forces associated with movement and measuring muscular effort during movement. In addition, the HPL also boasts a 64 channel EMG system for multichannel work and an isokinetic dynamometer, which can be used for both research and rehabilitation.

Physiological testing
Detailed analysis of pulmonary gas exchange can be made using an online gas analysis system, in addition to cardiac monitoring using a 12-lead ECG system, during exercise on a treadmill or the electromagnetically braked cycle ergometer. Measures can also be made out in the field, from simple tests of flexibility, strength, speed, power and cardiorespiratory fitness, to comprehensive measurement of expired air using the portable on-line gas analysis system.

Podiatric surgery has developed rapidly over the last 15 years as a post-registration professional development, and provides the podiatrist working within the NHS or in private practice with the opportunity to extend their scope of practice to include surgical management of foot and ankle pathologies. This course provides the podiatrist with the theoretical underpinning required to pursue this career route. The modular course is a collaborative initiative offered in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University.

Teaching, learning and assessment

A range of student-centred learning methods including tutorials, seminars and experimental laboratory classes are utilised. Your performance will be assessed by a variety of methods including course work and examination. Class sizes are normally around 10-15.

Teaching hours and attendance

This course is delivered by attendance and by online learning. You will generally be required to attend QMU/ Glasgow Caledonian University a few days a week to participate in classes. You will also be required to carry out additional self directed independent work. Your exact attendance (days and hours) at QMU/GCU will depend on which module you are studying. The part-time route allows you to space your studies out over a longer period of time to suit your needs.
