This course spans advanced mechanical sciences theory, simulation and practice. Using industry standard software you will develop complex models to simulate topics such as multibody dynamic systems; thermo-fluid systems and advanced stress and structure simulations. Failure mechanisms inreal-worldsystems and components will be investigated through fatigue analysis; you will also examine multi-body dynamic systems and turbulent fluid dynamic motion. Your chosen specialist Masters project makes upone thirdof the overall course.

You will also learn from industry case studies. All units provide real-world engineering problems, case studies and practical techniques using state-of-the-art hardware and the latest, industry-standard software for design, experimentation and evaluation. The units typically have a good balance of practical and theoretical work. Much of the practical work is computer based.

Accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Candidates must hold a CEng accredited BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree to comply with full CEng registration requirements.

About the Course

Our engineering Masters programmes are designed to meet the needs of an industry that looks to employ postgraduates who can learn independently and apply critical thinking to real-world problems. Many of the staff who teach in the School also have experience of working in the industry and have well-established links and contacts in their industry sector, ensuring your education and training is relevant to future employment.

This course starts in September and January. Please note that January starters will have a course duration of approximately 15 months.

Mathematical Methods in Biology and Life Sciences Group

Areas of interest include: Mathematical pharmacology; heat and mass transfer models for plant cooling; modelling cellular signal transduction dynamics; mathematical oncology: multi-scale modelling of cancer growth, progression and therapies, and modelling-optimized delivery of multi-modality therapies; multi-scale analysis of individual-based models; spreading speeds and travelling waves in ecology; high performance computing.

Course Content

As a student on the MRes Stochastic Processes programme you will study a range of topics for the taught element including:

Stochastic Calculus based on Brownian Motion

Levy processes and more general jump processes

The advanced Black-Scholes theory

Theory and numerics of parabolic differential equations

Java programming

The Stochastic Processes: Theory and Application course consists of a taught part (60 credits) and a research project (120 credits). Students will have a personal supervisor for their research project from the start of their studies.

Research projects could be of a theoretical mathematical nature, or they could be more applied, for example in financial mathematics or actuarial studies. Some of the research projects will be of an interdisciplinary character in collaboration with some of Swansea's world class engineers. For such projects it is likely that EPSRC funding would be available.

Facilities

The Aubrey Truman Reading Room, located in the centre of the Department of Mathematics, houses the departmental library and computers for student use. It is a popular venue for students to work independently on the regular example sheets set by their lecturers, and to discuss Mathematics together.

Our main university library, Information Services and Systems (ISS), contains a notably extensive collection of Mathematics books.

Careers

The ability to think rationally and to process data clearly and accurately are highly valued by employers. Mathematics graduates earn on average 50% more than most other graduates. The most popular areas are the actuarial profession, the financial sector, IT, computer programming and systems administration, and opportunities within business and industry where employers need mathematicians for research and development, statistical analysis, marketing and sales.

Some of our students have been employed by AXA, BA, Deutsche Bank, Shell Research, Health Authorities and Local Government. Teaching is another area where maths graduates will find plenty of career opportunities.

The period October to June is devoted to lectures, tutorials and practical sessions comprising the core modules.

This is followed by a period of about 14 weeks devoted to an individual project either in an industrial or engineering company or at the University.

Aims

You will study several key topics that will help equip you to work as a mechanical engineer in a broad spectrum of mechanical engineering business activity management, research, design and development roles. You will also complete a four-month individual project tailored to your individual interests that can take place in our own laboratories or, by agreement, in industry.

Here are the units you will study:

Structural Integrity: Contemporary approaches are applied to the evaluation of mixed mode fracture and fatigue failure. Dynamic plastic responses of structures and the performance of composite structures are evaluated.

Industrial Control Systems: This unit covers mathematical representation of control system models is developed principally using Laplace transforms. System behaviour and simulation is analysed with practical case studies, leading to control system specifications.

Advanced Materials: This unit is designed to deal with a wide range of advanced materials for engineering applications. Teaching will address analytical and numerical methods to assess the strength, stiffness, toughness, non-linearity behaviours, vibration and failures of engineering materials for component and structure design.

Energy Systems: This unit is designed to study the principles and techniques of operation of thermodynamics and combustion systems, as well as the provision and management of energy. The current and future requirements and trends in energy production and consumption are addressed.

Structural Application of Finite Elements: The use of finite element analysis techniques and software applied to structural problems is developed. Modelling with both isotropic and orthotropic materials is investigated, as well as such topics as cracking in dissimilar materials and composite laminates.

Computational Fluid Dynamics: A practical case study analysis approach is used for model formulation and CFD simulation. Fundamental principles are used to appraise the results of CFD analysis of problems with industrial applications.

Individual Project: A strong feature of the course is the individual project, which comprises a third of the course. We encourage students to undertake projects in industrial companies, but we can also use our extensive resources and staff skills to undertake projects within the University.

WHAT DOES THE MASTER IN ENERGY ENGINEERING OFFER TO ITS STUDENTS

In the last years both industrialization and population growth have brought to a higher demand for sustainable energy, smart energy management with reduced environmental impact. As a result the MSc Energy Engineering was born out of the need to better cope with Sustainable Development issues and progress in energy conversion technologies, in including renewable energy generation and energy storage, NZE buildings, with an increasing attention devoted to greenhouse gas emissions reduction through a multidisciplinary approach.

This MSc course is taught in English and students are supported in achieving higher English language skills. The University of Genoa set its modern campus in Savona and in the last few years, public and private funds have been invested to improve its infrastructures, sport facilities, hall of residence, library and an auditorium.

The University of Genoa and Siemens jointly developed a smart polygeneration microgrid in Savona Campus – officially commissioned on February 2014.

Since then the campus has largely generated enough power to satisfy its own needs with the help of several networked energy producers, i.e. total capacity 250Kw of electricity and 300kW of heating.

The grid includes microgasturbines, absorption chillers, a photovoltaic plant, a solar power station and electrochemical and thermal storage systems.

Aeronautical engineering graduates are highly valued and in great demand. This Masters course is ideal for graduates seeking employment in the aeronautical sector and for practising aerospace engineers who want to extend and update their skills.

Progression to management is key to the careers of postgraduate engineers, so as part of the course you will develop relevant managerial skills, as well as an awareness of the wider issues that affect the aeronautical industry, such as safety and the environment. The course meets the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with the Institution of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE) and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS).

The University has recently built an Aerospace Centre on the Pontypridd Campus, which includes a BAE Jetstream aircraft, laboratory equipment, a gas turbine engine, wind tunnel and a flight simulator, as well as state-of-the-art engineering analysis software.

We have comprehensive links with industry through our Industrial Panel, which contains representatives from major companies, including BAMC, Storm, GE Aviation Systems, Nordam Europe, TES and BA Avionics.

The course is delivered in two major blocks to offer an intensive but flexible learning pattern, with two start points each year – February and September. Modules involve lectures, tutorials and practical laboratory work, with continually assessed coursework or a mixture of coursework and exams.

The Power Systems Engineering MSc is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to work at a professional level in industries involved in the production, distribution and consumption of energy and power. This wide range of industries includes transport, conventional and renewable power generation.

About this degree

Students study analysis and design of conventional and renewable machinery systems and the use of computers in their advanced engineering analysis. Students gain knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering principles, quantitative methods, and mathematical and computer modelling alongside an awareness of the codes of practice, standards and quality issues within the modern industrial world. They also take modules in project management.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of six core modules (90 credits), one optional module (15 credits) and a research project (75 credits).

Assessment is through written, oral and viva voce examinations and coursework (including the evaluation of laboratory reports, technical and project reports, problem-solving exercises, computational and modelling skills and oral presentations).

The Power Systems Engineering MSc has been accredited by the Engineering Council as meeting the further learning requirements, in full, for registration as a Chartered Engineer for a period of five years, from the 2012 student cohort intake onwards.
