About the Course

The Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy is an academic program that prepares students not only for careers in the foreign service, in intergovernmental organizations, or international businesses, but also in such fields as journalism, non-governmental watchdogs or NGOs, foreign policy think tanks and academic research. The program combines problem solving, structural analysis, project development and management with a comprehensive theoretical and critical examination of the political, cultural, legal, and socioeconomic practices that make up our increasingly interdependent and complex world.

Because the political and economic problems central to foreign relations today invariably transcend national boundaries, the international agenda encompasses technological, religious, ethno-linguistic, and humanitarian concerns, as well as the more traditional area of diplomatic activity. Drawing from multiple fields including finance, law, history, philosophy, and theology, this program is decidedly interdisciplinary.

Converging Exercise and Nutrition Sciences Like Never Before

Most university programs segregate the study of exercise and nutrition sciences. The goal of UT’s M.S. in Exercise and Nutrition Science is to examine the relationship between the two fields in regard to optimizing athletic performance. The program combines advanced concepts from exercise physiology and strength and conditioning to teach students how nutrition can impact each area. Through numerous hands-on experiences and rigorous classroom study, students gain an unparalleled awareness of the intersection of these sciences.

Learning by Doing

M.S.-ENS students “learn by doing” through performance-based programming, which prepares practitioners to work with a wide variety of athletes. The department’s advanced labs and technology help students prepare for the real world. UT’s relationships with numerous local athletic teams such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tampa Bay Lightning allow students put their theories to test. UT faculty and students have also conducted extensive research with more than a dozen high-impact companies that are involved in exercise and nutrition/supplementation. These collaborations give students an insider’s view of the industry and provide a strong network for post-graduation jobs.

Internationally Recognized

Based on the rigor and innovation of the M.S.-ENS program, the International Society of Sports Nutrition recognized it as the first graduate program in Florida to offer approved coursework for preparation for the CISSN examination.

Study Abroad

The third semester will take place abroad at one of our partner universities. There‘s also the opportunity to do an internship before spending the semester abroad. The program ends with a Master-Thesis, often written in cooperation with a company. Upon completion of all program parts, the Master‘s Degree is awarded.

Dual Degrees

You can acquire another specialized Master‘s Degree at one of our partner universities as part of the Dual Degree program. To obtain this degree, you will spend two semesters abroad. Over 20 programs at the following universities are available: National Taiwan Normal University (TW), Florida International University (US), Boston University (US), Bond University (AU), SKEMA Business School (FR), Regent‘s University London (GB).

Practice-Oriented and Customized

The MBS lecturers and professors not only know the business world from books - on the contrary: It is part of the MBS teaching philosophy that only experts experienced in everyday business life teach current and practice-oriented content and methods. The course "Business Project" is one example for the practical relevance of the Master study program. It grants you the opportunity to implement a specific economic project in cooperation with a company. Thus, the acquired knowledge is applied and expanded to a specific case. All groups receive coaching from an MBS professor throughout the entire duration of the 8-month project period.

Ethnobotany is essentially interdisciplinary, involving knowledge of plants and their ecology in the context of their cultural, social and economic significance.

Ethnobotany is the study of the interrelationship between people and plants, particularly the way in which plants impact on human culture and practices, how humans have used and modified plants, and how they represent them in their systems of knowledge. This programme combines anthropological studies of human-environment interaction and sociocultural knowledge of plants in different parts of the world with ecology, conservation science, environmental law and biodiversity management. It also covers plant conservation and sustainable management practices, taxonomy, and economic botany.

The programme is taught collaboratively with the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew (a World Heritage Site).

Careers

The School has a very good record for postgraduate employment and academic continuation. Studying anthropology, you develop an understanding of the complexity of all actions, beliefs and discourse by acquiring strong methodological and analytical skills. Anthropologists are increasingly being hired by companies and organisations that recognise the value of employing people who understand the complexities of societies and organisations.

As a School recognised for its excellence in research we are one of the partners in the South East Doctoral Training Centre, which is recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). This relationship ensures that successful completion of our courses is sufficient preparation for research in the various fields of social anthropology. Many of our students go on to do PhD research. Others use their Master’s qualification in employment ranging from research in government departments to teaching to consultancy work overseas.

Since 1998 we have trained nearly 150 students through our MSc programme. More than 25% of these have moved on to undertake research degrees in some area of ethnobotany (for example, Kent, Oxford, Sussex, Vienna, Florida, Tulane, British Columbia, McGill), or have taken up positions which utilise their training and knowledge, for example, in NGOs such as the Global Diversity Foundation, at the Harvard Museum of Economic Botany, conservation education, at various Botanical Gardens around the world (for example, Kew, Edinburgh, New York, Auckland, Beirut), at the United Nations Environment Programme, and in the pharmaceutical industry. Some have gone on to work in universities or start their own organisations and businesses.
