COURSE OVERVIEW

The MSc Accounting and International Management programme is distinctive in its international flavour, with a strong emphasis on the international business themes necessary for analysing the dynamic global business challenges of the 21st century.It offers a critical understanding of current management theories and global accounting practices. The programme covers issues relating to international strategic management, managing people and organisations, global financial reporting, corporate governance, ethics and the fundamentals of marketing.

Henley Business School enjoys a strong reputation for the practical application of business ideas and concepts, underpinned by academic excellence and the strength of our research. We offer high-quality technical skills training as well as a deep understanding of the importance of personal development for leaders, a thread that runs through all of our Masters programmes.

Our postgraduate masters programmes feature a mix of core and optional modules, allowing you to tailor your degree towards your individual personal development needs and career ambitions. You will complete up to 10 taught modules during your programme, totalling 180 credits. One module usually equates to 20 credits or 10 hours of work per week. Your week will include lectures, tutorials, workshops and personal study, with each accounting for 25% of your time on average. This stimulating mix of lectures and interactive tutorials provides you with the opportunity to discuss and explore the subject material in depth with your lecturers and fellow students. You will be introduced to the latest thinking and research findings and be able to challenge some of those that have created it. You will also explore real-world issues and tackle current business challenges, and interact with guest lectures and speakers from industry, giving you the opportunity to test, extend and refine your knowledge and skills.

You will learn and be assessed through a wide variety of teaching methods which vary depending on your chosen Masters programme. These include online materials and multimedia content, guest lectures, individual and group assignments, case studies, field visits, dealing room simulations, presentations, applied projects, consultancy work and examinations.

On average examinations form around 70% of the assessed work with the remaining 30% coming from coursework, including a written dissertation or project depending on your chosen programme. The exam period falls between April and June in the summer term, with students taking an average of 5 or 6 exams. Graduation normally takes place in December.

The 2-year Master in Business and Technology, organized by the Solvay Business School of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, focuses on business aspects of modern-day technology. The programme contains advanced business courses, technology courses, as well as courses that combine both perspectives, such as the Entrepreneurship course.

This English variant of the Dutch-language Handelsingenieur ('Business Engineering') Master is not just a copy. On the contrary, the Solvay Master of Business & Technology focuses even more on IT and innovation and has a clear international flavour.

You will have the opportunity to take a number of elective courses in the second year, thus allowing you to personalise your curriculum and specialise more in either business, technology, or both.

Becoming a business engineer

Economics as its foundation, technology as added value and entrepreneurship as a guideline - this, in short, is the philosophy behind the Belgian academic qualification of 'Business Engineer' (Handelsingenieur / Ingénieur de Gestion, sometimes translated as 'Management Engineer' or 'Commercial Engineer').

Bridge the gap between the different worlds

The idea is to train professionals who are able to understand the jargon and business environment of all of their colleagues, whether they are engineers, economists, lawyers, computer scientists or they have other specialisations. Solid foundation in economics

During the bachelor phase of our degree, which is only offered in Dutch, our students develop a solid foundation in economics and are immersed in business disciplines such as marketing, finance, management and human resource management. This is combined with a thorough grounding in mathematics, statistics and computer science, while a strong basis in science is provided by coursework in physics, chemistry, electronics and technology. Another unique aspect of the business engineer’s education is a strong focus on language skills.

This broad background is the cornerstone of our master’s programme, and all students admitted to the program are expected to have a similar knowledge base.

High-level business programme

Through this programme international undergraduate students have the opportunity to benefit from the expertise of the Solvay Business School without having to attend classes in Dutch. The programme is designed for teachers and other professionals working in the field of education as well as recent graduates.

The course provides participants with opportunities to enhance their practice by reflecting on their own personal and professional experiences and developing further skills, knowledge and understanding of aspects of specific interest. It can be taken both full and part time. The full-time course has a distinct international and comparative perspective, whilst the part-time option contains the same modules as the full-time course but with additional modules related to teacher-led research, mathematics and early years.

Distinctive approaches to learning and teaching

The course is taught through a series of lectures, seminars and workshops. All teaching takes place in small groups which enables you to engage in discussion and debate. In addition to the main programme, you will have opportunities to attend research seminars, day courses and other activities.

All modules are taught by members of the university’s academic staff. The course also makes use of visiting lecturers from other academic institutions from within the UK and further. The underpinning delivery principle of our teaching is that we seek to demonstrate the ongoing links between theory and practice: we offer all our course members the chance to engage in rich dialogue and critical reflection on work based issues, concerns and developments.

Additional Costs

There are no additional fees in connected with this programme other than the requirement to be a suitably equipped student with a pen and paper. There are computers and computer spaces available at the university and the university library contains all required texts.

Course content

The MA comprises of modules that can be studied one by one. A key element of many modules is the provision for ‘shared enquiry’, enabling participants to engage with other professional colleagues and researchers in developing critical approaches to enquiry within practical education (and education-related) contexts.

Assessment procedures are flexible and sensitive to existing professional workloads, and are usually based on aspects of work currently ongoing in the participant’s own school or setting.

There is a full time pathway through this MA. This is particularly targeted at international students and has a strong international and comparative flavour, although UK students are very welcome to apply. It consists of four compulsory modules and a thesis.

Methods of Learning

The entire MA involves 140 hours of taught sessions, all of which are taught as interactive sessions involving activities and discussions. This means you will typically attend classes for 6 hours per week if studying full time, although this may vary depending on the modules taken. In addition full-time students will be expected to undertake a further 24 hours per week of private study and research. Part-time students taking the course over 3 years will be expected to do one third of this. You should however be aware that this is not consistently spread across the year and that at some points they may be working considerably more hours in a week.There will also be the chance to attend additional optional sessions and presentations connected to the research undertaken at Faculty of Education and Humanities.

Assessments

There are no examinations. The course has a mixture of assessments involving essays, portfolios, presentations and small scale research projects. Participants will complete a final project/dissertation on a topic negotiated with a tutor for the MA Education.

This master's programme focuses on the analysis of dynamic environments: past. present, and future. Concerns over human impacts on the environment have stimulated demand from governments and industry for the monitoring, analysis and modelling of natural processes in environmental systems. This is essential if we are to improve understanding of the interrelation of environmental variables in order to predict and manage their responses to anthropogenic perturbations.

You will gain:
-Advanced theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in order to collect, interpret and analyse contemporary and past environmental data.
-Modelling skills, in order to investigate the interrelationships between environmental variables, and to predict their responses to changing internal and external conditions.
-Intellectual and practical skills, in order to design and undertake field and/or laboratory experiments in contemporary environmental process-monitoring, or palaeoenvironmental reconstruction, and to design and test appropriate environmental models with the data you collect.

These skills are highly relevant if you wish to pursue a career in environmental management, or consultancy, and provide a firm grounding for research in the environmental sciences. Dr Jason Dortch directs the course, with input from other physical geographers working on a wide variety of aspects of environmental change. Current research includes:

We also use the proximity of Manchester to the upland areas of the Peak District; several past MSc students completed dissertation work in close collaboration with various organisations responsible for land management in the Peak District, giving their work direct policy relevance.

Aims

Teaching focuses on training in theory, concepts and research skills in the first semester, and practical applications and research experience in the second semester.

We teach course units in small-group interactive styles with a mix of lectures, tutorials, seminars, practicals and presentations. A range of physical geographers provide training in their specialised fields, covering both content and practical research methods.
In a typical week, expect to spend some time in the library, preparing for seminars; in the laboratory, completing practicals; in the dedicated postgraduate computer laboratory, or writing reports; and in the classroom.

The second semester in particular gives you increased opportunities to go out into the field, both for practicals and to gain research experience by doing field research with members of staff. We maintain an intensively monitored catchment on the moors near the Snake Pass in the Peak District and this is the focus of several practical exercises, as well as a source of data to support dissertation work.

Field and laboratory research are essential to your learning process in environmental monitoring, and these form integrated parts of both the taught units and dissertation work.

Career opportunities

In the second semester, various speakers from environmental employers visit the department to give a flavour of their work and advice on employment.

The MSc in Environmental Monitoring, Modelling and Reconstruction has an excellent track record in providing a springboard for students to go on to careers in environmental industries, consultancies and government agencies, or to further research for higher degrees.

Recent graduates have found employment in agencies like the UK Atomic Energy Authority, The Environment Agency, Natural England and a range of environmental consultancies. Others have moved on to undertake full-time research for a PhD.

This specialist course has been developed to equip graduate engineers with the skills required of a highly demanding aerospace industry.

Taught modules are balanced with practical and challenging individual and group aerospace project work. You will learn about aircraft design aerodynamics, space mechanics, spacecraft design, propulsion systems and the role of flight simulation in aerospace at an
advanced level.

Practical projects typically include the design, build and testing of a scale aircraft, computational fluid dynamics and structural analysis modelling of a critical aerospace component and flight performance evaluation using a flight simulator.

MSc Aerospace Engineering is accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). This will provide a route to Chartered Engineer status in the UK.

Aims

Although the course has a distinct specialist and technical flavour, the MSc also seeks to provide graduates with a raft of non-technical skills to enable them to realise their professional potential to its fullest.

The Dissertation (core, triple credit) is an individual project on a topic from motorsport engineering, offering an opportunity to specialise in a particular area of motorsport. In addition to developing a high level of expertise in a particular area of motorsport, including use of industry-standard software and/or experimental work, the module will also provide you with research skills, planning techniques, project management. Whilst a wide range of industry-sponsored projects are available (e.g. Far-Axon, Clayex/Dymola, Tranquillity Aerospace, Norbar, etc.), students are also able undertake their own projects in the UK and abroad, to work in close co-operation with a research, industrial or commercial organisation.

Clinical case studies dissertation

Subject to satisfactory results, students progress to clinical case studies supervised by relevant clinical staff. The clinical case studies provide training in evidence based nutritional practice for health professionals. Students assess and evaluate the medical history of patients with particular reference to nutritional needs in a detailed, in depth manner, with reference to national and international guidelines, current literature and current treatment protocols. Students discuss the contribution of nutrition to the cause, progress and treatment of the disease. They reflect on clinical practice, including how treatment guidelines have been applied, and if there have been any barriers or issues which have prevented this.

Most of our graduates return to their clinical responsibilities once they have completed the programme.
