Module Details

You can choose to take this course in either full-time or part-time mode, with a mixture of core and compulsory units providing good flexibility for part-time students. In the event that you are unable to complete the180 credits for the award of MSc, there are two additional exit awards:

Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) which is obtained if you have successfully completed 60 credits.

Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) which is obtained if you have successfully completed 120 credits.

You will study several key topics; however these are subject to innovation and may therefore change slightly over the years.

Here are the units you will study:

The Sports Business Industry: This unit enables you to evaluate the key source of uncertainty facing sports organisations and provides you with the knowledge and capacity to understand the strategic management process, the role of senior management and policy developers working with various sporting organisations.

Strategic Events Management: This unit introduces you to the principles underpinning event management and the strategic planning of events and the methods in which these principles are used in practice

Applied Research Methods: This unit Comprehensively prepares you for research in your chosen field. You will cover a range of research designs and approaches and will prepare you to undertake your MSc Research Project.

Optional Units include:

Sports Management in Practice: This unit offers the opportunity to both observe, and where appropriate contribute, within day-to-day delivery within an organisation associated with the sports management sector

Operational Management in Sport: This unit teaches techniques from the field of operations management that are relevant to the wider field of sports management. It aims to equip students with both knowledge and understanding of the aspects of operations management relating to the design, planning, control and improvement of operations in the sports industry.

Effective management of human resources is vital to business success. The MSc Management (HRM) will develop your knowledge of human resource management and can help you prepare for a career in human resources.

Our MSc Management (HRM) is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD). The CIPD is the largest professional body of HR and Learning and Development professionals with some 140,000 members across the globe. As a student on the MSc Management programme you have the option to join the CIPD (additional fee applies). Upon successful completion of your MSc (in line with the requirements of the CIPD) you will be eligible for the award of the CIPD’s Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management; your CIPD membership will be automatically updated to Associate Member, confirming your credentials as prospective HR professional.

  • business project (sourced by you or the School), you will apply the knowledge and skills you have acquired in terms 1 and 2 to address a real organisational problem, or
  • research project, you will apply advanced techniques to analyse a topic of your choice, relevant to your course.

International Experience

Our strong international connections and activities aim at providing you with an inside perspective of global business. During the International Study Tour elective, we take a group of students to a European destination, typically Geneva for a week. This self-funded competitive activity has given our students the opportunity not only to visit a series of prestigious global businesses but also to analyse them using a structured learning approach. As such this activity provides an excellent opportunity to be exposed to the challenges of global business, make new contacts, to stand out in the competitive jobs market, while having fun. Our expanding global network of University and business partners also gives you the opportunity to undertake part or all of your dissertation or business abroad. 

Guest Speakers

As part of your programme, you will be invited to presentations by leading international academics and practitioners within your chosen area of interest. Past speakers have included representatives of major global multinationals and leading scholars combining critical and progressive thinking with practical insights.

Dragons’ Den and Blueprint

You can become your own boss on our programme. The School’s heritage as a centre of expertise in entrepreneurship is reflected in two competitions seeking ideas for new businesses. Students on the Masters programme compete to win the School’s Dragon’s Den-style competition to pitch for investment, as well as the University’s Blueprint competition.

Course Learning and Teaching

The programme is mainly delivered through a mixture of lectures, seminars. Lectures provide key contents of a particular topic. Occasionally lectures might be delivered by guest speakers who are internationally recognised academic experts or practitioners in their field. Students can also attend the Durham Speaker Series, providing the opportunity to network with senior business leaders, staff and alumni.

Seminars provide the opportunity for smaller groups of students to solve problems, discuss and debate issues based on knowledge gained through lectures and independent study.

Students study 7 core modules including a 12,000 word dissertation or business project, and select 2 elective modules which enables them to undertake more in-depth study of particular topics. The dissertation allows students to carry out independent research and develop their skills in analysis and scholarly expression, using an appropriate theoretical framework. The business project usually involves an external organisation and gives students the opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the course to solve a real life problem.

In both cases, students are supported in writing their dissertation or business project through the study of a research methods module, and working with an allocated supervisor.

Academic Support:

Throughout the year, students may have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities e.g. networking events, interpersonal skills development, etc. They also have the opportunity to attend an International Study Week at an overseas location at the end of Term 2. This self-funded competitive activity gives students the opportunity to visit a series of prestigious organisations but also to analyse them using a structured learning approach.

Learning Resource:

Outside of timetabled contact hours, students are expected to undertake a significant amount of independent study in preparation for teaching sessions, assignments and other forms of assessment including exams, and general background reading to broaden their subject knowledge. All students have an Academic Adviser who is able to provide general advice on academic matters. Teaching staff are also available to provide additional support on a one-to-one basis via weekly consultation hours.

Internship field experiences are offered in a variety of institutional settings, including secondary and higher education, professional, recreational, and corporate fitness levels. The internship experience will give students an opportunity to gain expertise from professional mentors in a setting that is consistent with their career goals. During the internship, students will have the chance to learn from professionals currently working in the field experience the responsibilities required in their chosen area, and make many important contacts that may help further their career. Flexible Scheduling

The program is designed for individuals wanting to earn a master's degree part-time whilst working full-time. Students who want to pursue the degree on a full-time basis may complete the program on a faster track. Most courses are held in the late afternoon or early evening. If you're already, or would like to be, a leader or manager in a health or social care setting, our Masters course will develop and polish the skills you need to progress and be highly effective in your role.

Management and leadership in the health and social care sector is increasingly important worldwide, with The World Health Organization highlighting the need for managers to have appropriate competencies (WHO, 2007) and the NHS promoting specific values and principles of care (Department of Health, 2010).

Our course is designed to make sure you gain the knowledge, skills and emotional tools you need to meet these requirements and develop your full potential as a manager. You'll explore the important social and other factors which influence managing and leading both organisations and individuals, learning with other current and aspiring managers and leaders from a range of health and social care organisations from around the world.

Core Modules

Advanced Professional Decision Making

Advance your decision making skills through critical reflection and the help of a “critical friend”. This is a specialist module designated for our Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care course.

Current health and social care policy, along with the modernisation of the NHS and other international models, demands new ways of working across traditional boundaries and the implementation of national targets at local level.

This requires the development of roles for confident, autonomous practitioners, who possess the knowledge and skills to implement complex decisions in a rapidly changing environment, and to play key roles in service development.

You’ll need to be able to utilise practical decision making skills within an area of professional knowledge and develop strategies to facilitate the implementation of the outcomes of the decision making process into practice. This can be individually or within a team or organisation. In addition, management of change and service development are seen as core elements of the module, together with the enhancement of professional judgement and leadership.

Organisational Transformation in Health and Social Care

Here, you’ll critically explore change theory in relation to your own field of practice, and demonstrate understanding of the theoretical and philosophical components of organisational transformation.

This module encourages the synthesis of strategic discourse with operational application as modes of organisational structures thereby forming strong links between theory and practice. You’ll be expected to demonstrate an ability to isolate and focus on the significant features of problems and offer synthetic and coherent solutions.

It’s expected you’ll produce original or innovative work relating to your specialism that’s worthy of publication, public performance or display.

Research Studies

This module is designed to provide you with a critical overview of the main methodologies and designs applied to research within health and social care, professional practice, regulation and policy.

It provides you with an opportunity to explore the theoretical dilemmas that lie beneath the process of inquiry and its relationship to practice. The module will provide a framework within which to select, evaluate and justify the research methods chosen for your research project.

Major Project

The major project is of central importance to the Masters award. You’ll be expected to bring together aspects of learning from previous modules, as well as using the learning as the basis for planning, conducting and writing a research or work-based project.

This module will support you in your preparation and submission of a Masters level major project (either a research project or work-based project). There will be eight hours of workshop support available to you during the module. This will be delivered as four, two-hour workshops. In addition, there’ll be a full-day introductory workshop before the module commences.

You’ll be allocated a minimum of six hours individual supervisory support, with additional supervisory support negotiated between you and your supervisor.

Global Leadership (30 credits)

Businesses, whether private, public or third sector, operate in a world facing a range of urgent global issues. This module examines the fitness of businesses and individuals to tackle such issues, based on the Global Leadership model developed by lecturers at this university.

This module consists of four elements:

Effective decision making
Adoption of a global approach
Creation of a new business paradigm
Creation of a contemporary mission.

It also considers the related concept of mis-leadership, which looks at how leaders have often failed to achieve the optimum outcomes for those they lead. Leaders predominantly create context and this module will explore the skills required to successfully mould and develop the context in a chaotic environment.

Law and Ethics in Social Care (30 credits)

This module will give you a detailed and critical understanding of the generic ethical and legal theories and principles that underpin health and social care (e.g. consent, confidentiality, duty of care, human rights).

You’ll also have the opportunity to focus on particular aspects of law and ethics that have relevance to your practice or personal interest (e.g. mental health, data protection, negligence, resource allocation, and medical research). This module is particularly relevant to health and social care professionals looking to develop crucial insights into legal and ethical issues in practice.

Collaborative Practice in Integrated Care (30 credits)

The role of individuals is a central part of the government's agenda for modernisation, as evidenced by the creation of consultant practitioners posts (e.g. consultant nurse and consultant therapist). These posts function across professional and organisational boundaries, and provide strategic direction to their particular area of expertise.

Equally, in social work, closer links are being forged in terms of policy, practice and organisations. Implementing this policy is often fraught with difficulties. This module seeks to address some of the most salient issues.

Assessment

How you’re assessed will vary between modules. This is in order to assist you in developing submission evidence for Management and Leadership professional recognition later. Assignments include the production of report, essays and portfolio. For the Masters, a major project of no more than 18,000 words is also required.

Business Project or Dissertation

During term 3 you will complete a final project under the supervision of a faculty member, either in the UK or abroad through an international partner institution. Designed to develop your business insight and research skills, and help you to present your analysis and ideas in a rigorous, systematic and professional manner, it takes one of two forms:

  • business project (sourced by you or the School), you will apply the knowledge and skills you have acquired in terms 1 and 2 to address a real organisational problem, or
  • research project, you will apply advanced techniques to analyse a topic of your choice, relevant to your course.

Adding to your experience

International Experience

Our strong international connections and activities aim at providing you with an inside perspective of global business. During the International Study Tour elective, we take a group of students to a European destination, typically Geneva for a week. This self-funded competitive activity has given our students the opportunity not only to visit a series of prestigious global businesses but also to analyse them using a structured learning approach. As such this activity provides an excellent opportunity to be exposed to the challenges of global business, make new contacts, to stand out in the competitive jobs market, while having fun. Our expanding global network of University and business partners also gives you the opportunity to undertake part or all of your dissertation or business abroad. 

Guest Speakers

As part of your programme, you will be invited to presentations by leading international academics and practitioners within your chosen area of interest. Past speakers have included representatives of major global multinationals and leading scholars combining critical and progressive thinking with practical insights. 

Dragons’ Den and Blueprint

You can become your own boss on our programme. The School’s heritage as a centre of expertise in entrepreneurship is reflected in two competitions seeking ideas for new businesses. Students on the Masters programme compete to win the School’s Dragon’s Den-style competition to pitch for investment, as well as the University’s Blueprint competition.

Course Learning and Teaching

The programme is mainly delivered through a mixture of lectures, seminars. Lectures provide key contents of a particular topic. Occasionally lectures might be delivered by guest speakers who are internationally recognised academic experts or practitioners in their field. Students can also attend the Durham Speaker Series, providing the opportunity to network with senior business leaders, staff and alumni.

Seminars provide the opportunity for smaller groups of students to solve problems, discuss and debate issues based on knowledge gained through lectures and independent study.

Students study 6 core modules including a 12,000 word dissertation or business project, and select 3 elective modules which enables them to undertake more in-depth study of particular topics. The dissertation allows students to carry out independent research and develop their skills in analysis and scholarly expression, using an appropriate theoretical framework. The business project usually involves an external organisation and gives students the opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the course to solve a real life problem.

In both cases, students are supported in writing their dissertation or business project through the study of a research methods module, and working with an allocated supervisor.

Academic Support:

Throughout the year, students may have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities e.g. networking events, interpersonal skills development, etc. They also have the opportunity to attend an International Study Week at an overseas location at the end of Term 2. This self-funded competitive activity gives students the opportunity to visit a series of prestigious organisations but also to analyse them using a structured learning approach.

Learning Resource:

Outside of timetabled contact hours, students are expected to undertake a significant amount of independent study in preparation for teaching sessions, assignments and other forms of assessment including exams, and general background reading to broaden their subject knowledge. All students have an Academic Adviser who is able to provide general advice on academic matters. Teaching staff are also available to provide additional support on a one-to-one basis via weekly consultation hours.

Students also have access to the facilities available at Mill Hill Lane including dedicated postgraduate working spaces, an onsite library and IT helpdesk.

Course overview

Careers in Sport and Exercise Science can develop in at least two directions. Firstly you can help elite athletes reach their optimum sports performance. Secondly you can help the general population to improve fitness through exercise referral and community programmes.

This course allows you to specialise in both those areas, by providing you with a solid grounding in measurement, evaluation, research methods, data analysis, and sport and exercise psychology. Additionally, you will get the chance to study applied physiology, applied biomechanics or complete a personal project. The final stage is a research project that reflects your developed knowledge and skills.

Compared to undergraduate studies, this Masters has more emphasis on self-directed lab work, data collection and analysis. We encourage you to undertake real-world internships and build up experience with external clients and sports clubs. This practical experience will complement the rigorous research elements of the course.

By the end of the course you will have a portfolio of work, feedback from clients/employers, and a record of practical and academic projects. This will give you a clear advantage when it comes to applying for jobs.

The course mixes taught elements with independent research and self-directed study. There is flexibility to pursue personal interests in considerable depth, with guidance and inspiration from Sunderland's supportive tutors.

Biomechanics equipment

Our equipment can measure motion, muscle activity and forces on the body during high intensity sports and the activities of daily living. Equipment and techniques include the following:
-3D motion capture systems including Vicon® systems and Xsens® motion capture suits
-Software such as Dartfish®, Kinovea® and LongoMatch® software to capture live action images for match tagging and coaching feedback
-Movement tracking tools such as Actigraph® and Catapult®

Exercise Physiology and Psychology

Sports Medicine and Anatomy
Anatomy is taught by experienced staff in a specialist clinical lab using skeletons, anatomical models, 3D software, online material and human subjects. You will learn techniques for sports injury rehabilitation, including the use of sports massage and ultrasound equipment.

You will also examine balance and stability using our Biodex® stability and balance trainer and assess strength imbalances using our sophisticated Biodex® dynamometer and new BTE Primus® rehabilitation equipment. You can investigate how new techniques such as thermal imaging are being used in injury assessment with Flir® IR cameras.

Fitness and Conditioning Suite
In our lab, you'll find fitness and conditioning equipment that would be the envy of most modern gyms. From a wide range of cardiovascular equipment to machine and Olympic weights, you will receive hands-on teaching in a professional environment.

University Library Services
The University library has thousands of relevant books, e-books and journal articles, with many more titles available through the inter-library loan service. We subscribe to useful resources such as SPORTDiscus, which provides journal articles, book chapters and summaries about sport, fitness and related disciplines.

Sciences Complex
This course is based in the Sciences Complex at our City Campus, which has benefited from multi-million pound investments. The IT facilities are excellent and, across the University, there are hundreds of workstations as well as wireless internet access. The MSc in Environmental Health Sciences has been designed to allow graduates from a range of science and engineering disciplines to develop and extend knowledge in risk-based assessment and management of environmental influences on human health.

Environmental health is the assessment and management of environmental influences on human health. This includes the study of:

- environmental protection including control of air, water and land pollution

- food safety and hygiene including production, distribution and fitness for human consumption

- occupational health and safety including investigation and control of work-related accidents and ill health

- the built environment including homes, workplaces and public spaces

Environmental health work is important and highly worthwhile and many of our students are motivated by a desire to directly improve living and working conditions for a wide range of people.

You'll develop expertise in current methods for examining factors that affect human health, assessing and managing the risks involved, and meeting the challenges resulting from changes in the interaction between people and the environment.

The wide scope of environmental health sciences and the corresponding breadth of the degree reflect rapid technological progress. Environmental impact assessment, sustainable development, air, water and noise pollution are increasingly important and there is a pressing need for graduates with skills in these disciplines.

This course also provides an emphasis on teaching subjects that are relevant to contemporary problems faced by communities, government, industry and commercial organisations.

For example, professionals from outside Strathclyde work together with academic staff and students in the teaching of case studies of outbreaks of water-borne and food-borne diseases and also in urban and industrial air quality management.

You’ll study

Teaching is based on a core of conventional lectures and tutorials, complemented by group projects, laboratory classes, student-led seminars and fieldwork. The programme can be studied over one year full-time, two years part-time or up to five years through Open Access.

On the full-time programme, you’ll follow a core curriculum of eight classes and four optional class. Each class is taught for two to three hours per week over eight to 12 weeks.

Following successful completion of the taught component, you’ll undertake a dissertation from June to August.

Our laboratory facilities are well-equipped for a wide range of chemical and biological measurements. High-technological instrumentation and space are available to investigate:

- marine and freshwater quality

- air quality

- solid and hazardous wastes

- environmental microbiology

Teaching staff

The course is delivered by staff from the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. The academic team includes:

- Dr Iain Beverland, programme manager of the MSc in Environmental Health Sciences. He has research & teaching interests in the areas of air pollution control, environmental epidemiology, exposure assessment, & public/environmental health. Current research includes study of the effects of exposure to air pollution on human health, with a focus on traffic-related air pollution in urban areas.

- Dr Tara K Beattie has expertise in the field of public health and the management of water and solid waste. Her research interests include free-living protozoa and their potential to cause human disease.

- Dr Raymond Wong has research and teaching interests in the areas of food laws (EU and UK), policies and compliance; food poisoning, contamination and prevention; and food safety management systems.

- Dr Christine Switzer specialises in contaminant fate, transport and remediation with emphases on non-aqueous phase liquids and aggressive remediation technologies.

Additional information

Staff within the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering have engaged with developing Environmental Health training in Africa for almost 20 years.

Flexible Options – Distance Learning & CPD

This course is also offered via Distance Learning mode, which allow you to complete an MSc via online study at home, at a time that suits you. This means you can study while balancing your existing work and family commitments. This option is suitable for students located anywhere in the world. The MSc via Distance Learning is via part-time study over 3 years.

Home students can also choose to study through the Professional Development route. You register for one module at a time and have the option to build up credits eventually leading to a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MSc. You can take up to five years to achieve the qualification. This option is popular with students in employment, who may wish to undertake modules for Continuing Professional Development purposes. Students who do not meet the normal MSc entry requirements for this programme are welcome to apply through this route instead.

Graduates in environmental health sciences are well prepared for a wide range of professions that require intellectual flexibility and analytical skill.

You will gain practical expertise that will allow you to assess, treat and support individuals from a variety of sporting disciplines. For example, you will understand the process of an injury audit to identify risk factors, and learn how to implement an evidence-based treatment plan that minimises the chance of re-injury. You will study rehabilitation strategies, return to play assessments and explore the emergent field of rehabilitation, meaning you can prevent as well as treat injuries. Durham University has joined forces with CIM to give students the opportunity to gain professional qualifications through CIM Graduate Gateway. CIM qualifications are highly sought after by employers, and map alongside our own degrees which ensures we are equipping students with the best opportunities for a successful marketing career.

Term 1

You will learn the application of key marketing models and theories to apply to real world scenarios. In Term 1, teaching is based on core learning that provides you with the opportunity to develop skills and experience relevant to a multitude of business marketing careers, from the commercial sector to charities and beyond.

Core modules are:

  • Contemporary Marketing Communication
  • Consumers and Consumption
  • Marketing Theory
  • Marketing Management and Strategy

You then choose one elective from a range which in the past has included Strategic Brand Management, Social Marketing, and Ethical Leadership.

Term 2

In Term 2, the course includes optional modules to enable you to gain advanced-level training in contemporary marketing and management. You will have the opportunity to select elective modules to customise your learning.

The core module in Term 2 is Research Methods in Marketing.

You also study three elective modules across marketing and management, which in previous years have included:

Term 3: Business Project or Dissertation

In the summer, you will complete a 12,000-word dissertation on a business topic of your choice. This can be based on independent academic research or a business project (a real commercial challenge sourced by you or the school).

Supervised by a faculty member with relevant experience, you’ll investigate in greater detail a subject that you’ve already studied as part of your programme.

This is an opportunity for you to develop your business insight and present your analysis and ideas in a scholarly and professional manner; combine critical discrimination and a sense of proportion in evaluating evidence and the opinions of others.

If your ambitions lie beyond the UK, we offer a number of places on our unique Dissertation Abroad scheme. This will involve writing a dissertation at one of our international partner institutions in the period June to August. A number of scholarships are available

It is well known that the first two decades of life represent an important window of opportunity to not only improve the health and well-being of young people, but also their health status into adult life. The role that physical activity and fitness can play in improving markers of health and well-being in young people is an important area of study, especially given concerns of declining fitness and increasing obesity in today’s children and adolescents.

Based on the internationally-recognised research conducted at the Children’s Health and Exercise Research Centre (CHERC, http://sshs.exeter.ac.uk/research/centres/cherc/), our Masters programme in Paediatric Exercise and Health offers a thorough grounding in the unique physiological responses of children and adolescents during exercise and how these responses are influenced by age, sex and biological maturation. It provides an in depth evaluation of the relationships between physical activity, fitness and health in young people. You will gain experience of both theoretical and hands-on methods used to evaluate physical activity and fitness, plus advanced training in research methods and analytical procedures.

The programme is delivered within a friendly and supportive learning environment, drawing upon innovative multi-method and multi-disciplinary research and teaching by our leading academics. You will have opportunities for involvement with on-going research projects and to develop key transferable skills beneficial for further doctoral study.

The programme is suitable for sport, exercise and health-related professionals seeking continuing professional development. Recent examples of professionals graduating from our programmes include medical doctors, practice nurses, physiotherapists and youth sports managers/coaches.

Learning and teaching

The MSc Paediatric Exercise and Health presents an academic challenge whilst also providing you with the skills to apply theoretical concepts in real-world laboratory and field settings. The Masters programme is intended to enhance teaching and learning through research and applied practice derived from sport, health and exercise. It will provide you with the opportunity to employ theoretical concepts in applied sport, health and exercise settings and acquire a range of transferable skills to develop as an autonomous and reflective individual.

All of our teaching staff are active researchers and their work informs public policy on exercise and health. For example, we provide scientific support and consultancy services to national and international athletes and teams including Rugby Football Union, England and Wales Cricket Board, and the Football Association.

The programme is made up of five compulsory modules. The list of modules may include the following; Paediatric Exercise Physiology; Laboratory Techniques in Physiology ; Paediatric Exercise and Health; Research Methods and Analytical Procedures and Dissertation (Journal Article)

Careers

Dedicated careers day and tailored career support for each student are provided. Graduates of the programme have typically found employment in a variety of sport, exercise, leisure management and consultancy, and health promotion settings. Recent examples include: community based physical activity coordinators and directors; research assistant at the Medical Research Council; and a local authority physical activity specialist for children with coordination and movement difficulties.

This course is for aspiring professionals who want to progress towards completion of the ACCA professional accountancy qualification and gain a masters degree.

In order to study via this route, you must have passed or been granted exemption from ACCA papers F1 to F9. You will need to complete your core professional papers and a dissertation in order to be awarded the MSc Accounting.

You will also be able to study for your two optional professional ACCA papers in semester two if you wish to complete your ACCA exams. It is your choice whether you take on these additional papers ? you can decide when you receive your semester one results. There is an additional charge for these papers and a discounted rate is available to our students.
