Course overview

Careers in Sport and Exercise Science can develop in at least two directions. Firstly you can help elite athletes reach their optimum sports performance. Secondly you can help the general population to improve fitness through exercise referral and community programmes.

This course allows you to specialise in both those areas, by providing you with a solid grounding in measurement, evaluation, research methods, data analysis, and sport and exercise psychology. Additionally, you will get the chance to study applied physiology, applied biomechanics or complete a personal project. The final stage is a research project that reflects your developed knowledge and skills.

Compared to undergraduate studies, this Masters has more emphasis on self-directed lab work, data collection and analysis. We encourage you to undertake real-world internships and build up experience with external clients and sports clubs. This practical experience will complement the rigorous research elements of the course.

By the end of the course you will have a portfolio of work, feedback from clients/employers, and a record of practical and academic projects. This will give you a clear advantage when it comes to applying for jobs.

Course content

The course mixes taught elements with independent research and self-directed study. There is flexibility to pursue personal interests in considerable depth, with guidance and inspiration from Sunderland's supportive tutors.

Our equipment can measure motion, muscle activity and forces on the body during high intensity sports and the activities of daily living. Equipment and techniques include the following:

Exercise Physiology and Psychology

Sports Medicine and Anatomy
Anatomy is taught by experienced staff in a specialist clinical lab using skeletons, anatomical models, 3D software, online material and human subjects. You will learn techniques for sports injury rehabilitation, including the use of sports massage and ultrasound equipment.

You will also examine balance and stability using our Biodex® stability and balance trainer and assess strength imbalances using our sophisticated Biodex® dynamometer and new BTE Primus® rehabilitation equipment. You can investigate how new techniques such as thermal imaging are being used in injury assessment with Flir® IR cameras.

Fitness and Conditioning Suite
In our lab, you'll find fitness and conditioning equipment that would be the envy of most modern gyms. From a wide range of cardiovascular equipment to machine and Olympic weights, you will receive hands-on teaching in a professional environment.

The University library has thousands of relevant books, e-books and journal articles, with many more titles available through the inter-library loan service. We subscribe to useful resources such as SPORTDiscus, which provides journal articles, book chapters and summaries about sport, fitness and related disciplines.

This project will examine if augmenting a conventional exercise routine with recreational virtual environments, will increase the intrinsic mo tivation with a group of users.

Building on research in VR/AR platforms with 3D 6 Degrees of Freedom accurate low latency controllers where users’ physical movement can be tracked ,the game /experience will lead the user through a number of predefined physical activities over a specific time period.

The user’s movements and other biometric data are collated and assessed in the context of the user’s perception of exertion and motivation to continue to carry out the exercise. We hope to gain an understanding of the links between differing VR/AR experiences and motivation to carry out physical exercise.

Methodology proposed

This project will use a mixed methodology. A pilot study will be carried out on usage of the new the new system.

Expected outcomes: (e.g. deliverables & strategic impacts)

Through knowledge creation, application and transfer, this project will deepen our understanding of the factors determining motivation for physical exercise in a VR/AR environment. In line with the IT Carlow’s strategic research objectives, the outputs will be disseminated through publication in peer-reviewed journals and at conferences.

Project Objectives

  1. To examine if a modified exercise programme of one hour, twice a week, can significantly improve the fitness level of children with ASD, over an 8 week period.
  2. To examine if a modified exercise programme of one hour, twice a week, can significantly improve the behaviour of children with ASD over an 8 week period.

Methodology proposed

The aim of this study is to examine the effects of an eight week exercise programme delivered twice a week, in one hour session to children with ASD. The project will examine if 2 hrs per week of exercise is a suitable dosage to obtain significant improvements in the children’s behaviour and fitness level.

This project will be a continuation of a project which is presently running examining the effects of an eight week programme delivered in 3, one hour slots. A suitable exercise programme has been developed to administer to the children. The project will involve administering the exercise programme to primary schools in Carlow and Kilkenny. Children with autism who are taught within an autism unit will be included in the project. Prior to the commencement of the study, the teachers and parents of the children, once their consent has been given, will be asked to fill in 2 questionnaire assessing the children’s behaviour. The children will then undergo a modified Eurofit testing to assess their fitness levels. An eight week programme of exercise will be administered to the children, twice per week, in a one hour duration. Following the completion of the programme retest of the modified Eurofit test will be re administered and the parents and teachers of the children will be again asked to fill out the questionnaires assessing the children’s behaviour.

Expected outcomes: (e.g. deliverables & strategic impacts)

Exercise is believed to be extremely beneficial for children with autism, especially for improving their behaviour, but the evidence for this is mainly based on case studies. The necessary dosage of exercise to improve behaviour and fitness levels needs to be established. This study will be a follow on from a study currently running in this area. The combined results from both studies will help to inform all medical and educational professionals on what is the optimum dosage of exercise for children with autism, to improve both fitness and behaviour. The results of this study will be disseminated via social media twitter/Facebook (autism mamai), peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

The role that physical activity and fitness can play in improving markers of health and well-being in young people is an important area of study, especially given concerns of declining fitness and increasing obesity in today’s children and adolescents.

Based on the internationally-recognised research conducted at the Children’s Health and Exercise Research Centre (CHERC), our Masters programme in Paediatric Exercise and Health offers a thorough grounding in the unique physiological responses of children and adolescents during exercise and how these responses are influenced by age, sex and biological maturation. It provides an in depth evaluation of the relationships between physical activity, fitness and health in young people. You will gain experience of both theoretical and hands-on methods used to evaluate physical activity and fitness, plus advanced training in research methods and analytical procedures.

The programme is delivered within a friendly and supportive learning environment, drawing upon innovative multi-method and multi-disciplinary research and teaching by our leading academics. Individual Project 

The project provides an opportunity to undertake a sustained, intensive and independent investigation into a topic of your choosing, presenting your work in a peer-reviewed journal format.

Students have full access to the University’s leading fully-equipped sports science facilities, which boast a BASES-accredited physiology laboratory, as well as biomechanics, health and exercise, and psychology laboratories. Many of these facilities are regularly used by professional athletes, including players from Southampton FC.

Prior to starting the course you’ll be expected to have a placement organised that will last throughout your studies; this can be in more than one organisation if required. The placement should be in a role relevant to the course, and might include (but not limited to) coach, sport scientist, performance analyst, strength and conditioning coach, exercise physiologist, biomechanist, laboratory technician, etc.

Swansea University Medical School's Graduate Entry Medicine Programme (MBBCh) is unique in Wales, and one of a small group of similar programmes of medical study in the UK. Our MBBCh degree is an innovative, 4-year accelerated medical degree open to graduates of any discipline.

Key Features of Graduate Entry Medicine Programme

The Graduate Entry Medicine Programme is a fully independent four-year programme based primarily in Swansea and west Wales, although students may undergo placements in other parts of Wales if they wish. We have designed an integrated medical curriculum, where the basic biomedical sciences are learnt in the context of clinical medicine, public health, pathology, therapeutics, ethics and psycho-social issues in patient management. This, together with a high emphasis on clinical and communication skills, will provide you with everything you'll need to practise medicine competently and confidently.

The curriculum of the Graduate Entry Medicine programme, with its learning weeks and clinical placements, is intentionally not structured in a conventional ‘body systems’ approach but is designed to reflect the way in which clinicians approach patients and how patients present to doctors.

This innovative approach will help you to develop a way of thinking and of engaging with information that mimics that used in clinical practice. As you work your way through learning weeks, clinical placements and practical sessions, you will acquire knowledge and build up your repertoire of clinical understanding and skills. Themes and strands, which run longitudinally throughout the Graduate Entry Medicine Programme, will help you make links with other aspects you are learning, and with things you have previously considered as well as how all this relates to clinical practice.

Course Structure

The Graduate Entry Medicine Programme consists of Phase I (Years 1 + 2) and Phase II (Years 3 + 4). Each year is mapped onto GMC Tomorrow’s Doctors 2009 (TD09), where 3 Modules – Scholar and Scientist, Practitioner and Professional, reflect the TD09 outcome areas.

The Graduate Entry Medicine programme involves a spiral, integrated curriculum structured around 6 body system ‘Themes’ - Behaviour, Defence, Development, Movement, Nutrition and Transport - with 96 clinical cases presented in 70 ‘learning weeks’ (65 in Phase I and 5 in Phase II).

GAMSAT

GAMSAT is a professionally designed and marked selection test for medical schools offering graduate-entry programmes open to graduates of any discipline. You will need to sit GAMSAT if you intend to apply for entry to the GEM Programme here in Swansea. There are no exemptions from the GAMSAT test.

GAMSAT evaluates the nature and extent of abilities and skills gained through prior experience and learning, including the mastery and use of concepts in basic science, as well as the acquisition of more general skills in problem solving, critical thinking and writing.

How we decide

Applicants, who meet the minimum entry requirements are ranked based upon their GAMSAT scores. The applicants who have scored most highly are then invited to attend the Selection Centre at the Medical School in the Spring. Please note that all candidates must attend in person and that we do not have the capacity to offer remote interviews, for example via Skype.

We will attempt to inform all applicants whether they have been successful. All candidates who are successful in gaining an interview will also be invited to attend a Visit Day at the University's Singleton Campus.

Format of the Selection Centre

After an introduction and a “setting the scene” session, you will be asked to sit a written assessment of 30 minutes duration. This situational judgement test is not designed to assess your academic ability, but to try and identify those applicants whose personal and academic qualities are suitable to a career in medicine.

Following the written assessment, you will have a tour of the university. You will learn more about the course and see life here at Swansea through the eyes of a medical student. It is not just about Swansea deciding if you are right for our course, but also the opportunity for you to see if Swansea is right for YOU.

After lunch, you will then be invited to attend two separate interviews, each of 20 minutes duration. They are conducted by pairs of trained interviewers taken from our highly trained panel of clinicians, academics, medical students and members of the public (lay) interviewers. Your personal statement will be considered and discussed during your interview.

The interview process is designed to take account of the personal and academic qualities needed as a doctor, as set out in ‘Good Medical Practice’, and the capacity to meet the outcomes of ‘Tomorrows Doctors’. In summary these are:

This was the first course to be accredited by the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr), the national register for qualified sport and exercise nutritionists. Academically challenging, vocationally relevant and underpinned by evidence-based practice, it focuses on the study of nutrition in relation to sport and exercise.

You will gain a thorough understanding of the multidisciplinary aspects of sport and exercise nutrition, and on completion you will be able to apply for graduate registration with the SENr.

Whether you aspire to work in high-performance sport or in the promotion of physical activity, exercise and good health practices among the general population or in specific communities, nutrition workshops and applied sessions will provide you with the opportunities to develop your practical skills and apply your expertise. If you would like to gain additional practical experience alongside your academic study, you will be able to apply for an internship in an applied sport science setting, working with elite athletes under the guidance of a registered SENr practitioner.
