Course overview

Careers in Sport and Exercise Science can develop in at least two directions. Firstly you can help elite athletes reach their optimum sports performance. Secondly you can help the general population to improve fitness through exercise referral and community programmes.

This course allows you to specialise in both those areas, by providing you with a solid grounding in measurement, evaluation, research methods, data analysis, and sport and exercise psychology. Additionally, you will get the chance to study applied physiology, applied biomechanics or complete a personal project. The final stage is a research project that reflects your developed knowledge and skills.

Compared to undergraduate studies, this Masters has more emphasis on self-directed lab work, data collection and analysis. We encourage you to undertake real-world internships and build up experience with external clients and sports clubs. This practical experience will complement the rigorous research elements of the course.

By the end of the course you will have a portfolio of work, feedback from clients/employers, and a record of practical and academic projects. This will give you a clear advantage when it comes to applying for jobs.

Course content

The course mixes taught elements with independent research and self-directed study. There is flexibility to pursue personal interests in considerable depth, with guidance and inspiration from Sunderland's supportive tutors.

Teaching and assessment

We use a wide variety of teaching and learning methods which include lectures, problem-based learning seminars, web-based resources, small group discussions and debates. You will develop your practical skills with workshops and laboratory classes.

Biomechanics equipment

Our equipment can measure motion, muscle activity and forces on the body during high intensity sports and the activities of daily living. Equipment and techniques include the following:

-Software such as Dartfish®, Kinovea® and LongoMatch® software to capture live action images for match tagging and coaching feedback

Exercise Physiology and Psychology

-Cortex® gas analysers to evaluate cardiovascular performance
-Biochemical analysers from Randox®, Jenway® and Gonotec® to measure substances and enzymes within the body

Sports Medicine and Anatomy
Anatomy is taught by experienced staff in a specialist clinical lab using skeletons, anatomical models, 3D software, online material and human subjects. You will learn techniques for sports injury rehabilitation, including the use of sports massage and ultrasound equipment.

You will also examine balance and stability using our Biodex® stability and balance trainer and assess strength imbalances using our sophisticated Biodex® dynamometer and new BTE Primus® rehabilitation equipment. You can investigate how new techniques such as thermal imaging are being used in injury assessment with Flir® IR cameras.

Fitness and Conditioning Suite
In our lab, you'll find fitness and conditioning equipment that would be the envy of most modern gyms. From a wide range of cardiovascular equipment to machine and Olympic weights, you will receive hands-on teaching in a professional environment.

University Library Services
The University library has thousands of relevant books, e-books and journal articles, with many more titles available through the inter-library loan service. We subscribe to useful resources such as SPORTDiscus, which provides journal articles, book chapters and summaries about sport, fitness and related disciplines.

Sciences Complex
This course is based in the Sciences Complex at our City Campus, which has benefited from multi-million pound investments. The IT facilities are excellent and, across the University, there are hundreds of workstations as well as wireless internet access. Course detail

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:
• Prescribe exercise programs that promote improved health status and/or improved physical performance.
• Perform a comprehensive consultation with a client and use the information collected to guide the development of an exercise training program.
• Provide appropriate instruction of exercise execution, including appropriate verbal and tactile cues.
• Utilize counselling skills to support a client in determining and meeting their fitness and lifestyle goals.
• Administer the CPAFLA protocol accurately, and interpret and communicate the results.
• Plan, implement, and evaluate a successful health promotion program or strategy.
• Instruct all components of a group exercise class.
• Describe the six classes of nutrients, the digestion and absorption of these nutrients, and outline the nutritional needs of a physically active person.
• Discuss nutritional and exercise needs, as well as considerations, for an individual through all phases of their lifespan.
• Support the operation of fitness and wellness facilities through the application of management and supervisory skills, such as human resources management, financial management, and risk management.
• Develop effective marketing tools and plans, and apply prospecting, personal selling, and customer service skills to develop and maintain a client base.

Work Placement

Experiential learning is an integral part of this program. The program features three unpaid internship courses, two of which take place on campus (semester 1 and semester 2) and the third of which takes place off campus in the spring, following semester 2. During the on-campus internship courses, students provide fitness assessments and testing, physical activity counselling and prescription services to Humber and partner employees as part of the Humber Centre for Healthy Living (Humber CHL). Students have the opportunity to run workshops for the Humber CHL and its partners, as well as providing healthy tips and videos for the Humber CHL website. Throughout the on-campus internship courses, students participate in seminars with their professors and classmates to critically analyze their experiences and develop the skills required for professional work.

The final work placement is a four-week block placement off campus with one of Humber’s industry partners.

This course can help graduates tap into a number of good career opportunities in sport and exercise science across a number of specialist fields, from developing programmes for elite athletes to working with schools and colleges to encourage the next generation of athletes to excel.

The programme -

Built on a successful and popular undergraduate programme, this high-level master’s degree helps to prepare students for a career in the sports industry by delivering hands-on professional skills and adopting an interdisciplinary approach to coaching.

During the course, students will explore key areas such as talent identification, long-term athlete development, performance analysis, strength and conditioning, peak performance, technical and tactical development, marginal gains, and injury prevention and management.

To complement their studies, students are expected to undertake work placements relevant to the course within professional sport and exercise organisations. Working at all levels, from elite athletes to schools or rehabilitation patients, students will gain valuable ‘real-world’ experience working alongside leading experts. Work placements are expected to have been organised prior to joining the course; if students have been unable to organise a placement, the University will support them in finding a suitable opportunity.

Students have full access to the University’s leading, fully-equipped sports science facilities, which boast a BASES-accredited physiology laboratory, as well as biomechanics, health and exercise, and psychology laboratories. Many of these facilities are regularly used by professional athletes, including players from Southampton FC.

Past students have benefitted from a guest speaker programme which has featured lectures from professionals from the highest level of a variety of sports, who have shared their advice, knowledge and experience of the industry.

Course Content

Technical Development in Sport: On this unit you will critically analyse coaching methods and how skill is acquired, building your understanding and use of technology for developing, monitoring and testing athletic performance.

Psycho-Social Development in Sport: The aim of this unit is to analyse the theories underpinning talent identification and long-term athlete development, and to examine the psycho-social factors affecting performance throughout an athlete’s career.

Physical Preparation in Sport and Exercise: This unit examines the science behind effective training, injury prevention and rehabilitation in a practical setting. You will focus on physical and mental loading, and on the key fitness components of strength, speed, endurance and flexibility.

Tactical Development in Sport: This unit focuses on performance analysis techniques, providing practical opportunities to collect, assimilate and analyse tactical, technical and time motion information, with the aim of improving performance.

Marginal Gains for Peak Performance: This unit identifies past, current and future methods of obtaining potential marginal advantage in performance, with a chance to build first-hand experience via off-site learning.

Individual Project: The project provides an opportunity to undertake a sustained, intensive and independent investigation into a topic of your choosing, presenting your work in a peer-reviewed journal format.

Teaching, learning and assessment -

The course combines theory-led sessions with practical sessions, working individually and in groups in both the laboratory and the field. On all units you’ll work with real-life clients, in a placement either organised yourself or by members of the course team.

Work experience -

Prior to starting the course you’ll be expected to have a placement organised that will last throughout your studies; this can be in more than one organisation if required. The placement should be in a role relevant to the course, and might include (but not limited to) coach, sport scientist, performance analyst, strength and conditioning coach, exercise physiologist, biomechanist, laboratory technician, etc.

If you’ve been unable to organise a placement, the course team will support you in finding a placement, potentially with university partners Southampton FC or a range of other top sports organisations, including Reed’s High Performance Academy, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Crystal Palace FC, London Irish RFC, GB Wheelchair Rugby and more.

It is well known that the first two decades of life represent an important window of opportunity to not only improve the health and well-being of young people, but also their health status into adult life. The role that physical activity and fitness can play in improving markers of health and well-being in young people is an important area of study, especially given concerns of declining fitness and increasing obesity in today’s children and adolescents.

Based on the internationally-recognised research conducted at the Children’s Health and Exercise Research Centre (CHERC, http://sshs.exeter.ac.uk/research/centres/cherc/), our Masters programme in Paediatric Exercise and Health offers a thorough grounding in the unique physiological responses of children and adolescents during exercise and how these responses are influenced by age, sex and biological maturation. It provides an in depth evaluation of the relationships between physical activity, fitness and health in young people. You will gain experience of both theoretical and hands-on methods used to evaluate physical activity and fitness, plus advanced training in research methods and analytical procedures.

The programme is delivered within a friendly and supportive learning environment, drawing upon innovative multi-method and multi-disciplinary research and teaching by our leading academics. As well as in-depth academic study, you'll benefit from practice-based learning with 170 days of the total course spent in placements, spread out over the two years of the course. Course outline

This programme was developed in partnership with a range of key stakeholders, including social work service users and carers, and representatives from social work agencies. You'll critically discuss how social work theory, core skills and key professional concepts facilitate understanding of individuals within the environment. About the programme

Physical inactivity is a major factor in the national and international epidemic of preventable diseases. The programme examines the
effectiveness of exercise health interventions and investigates the use of exercise as a tool to assess future health risks. It will equip you with the high-level skills required to implement and interpret exercisebased data. With a strong emphasis on research, practical experience is also a key part of this programme.

Modules will look at analysis of individual’s behaviour towards their exercise and health choices, utilising network analyses as a novel method of investigation. Strong emphasis is placed on health screening and the understanding of medical data, covering the theory and interpretation of the tests that patients with chronic lifestyle diseases undergo.

There is also a strong focus on research informed practice. Modules include the design and implementation of exercise and health research, and in the data analyses of such research. These units are key not only in enhancing your ability to find, interpret and critically appraise literature from an expert standpoint, but also prepare you for your MSc project.

Our accelerated programme will help you become a practicing physiotherapist with only two years of study, rather than the traditional three. You'll use your existing academic skills to study patient management in core areas of physiotherapy, including cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal and neurology.

We offer a blend of academic study and practical experience, including five placement opportunities in a variety of settings across North West England, Southern Scotland and the Isle of Man. After 1000 hours of supervised clinical practice, combined with the research and theory learnt in the classroom, you'll have everything you need to be a fully-registered and qualified physiotherapy practitioner.

Course outline

This programme is validated by both the Health and Care Professions Council and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, ensuring eligibility to register with both organisations. We cover core areas of current practice and embrace the values of the NHS Constitution, such as treating people with respect, dignity and compassion.

All modules have been designed with reference to related organisations, including the HCPC, CSP and NHS to ensure relevance to contemporary practice. In addition, five clinical placements are integrated throughout the course. These do not carry academic credit but must be successfully completed in order to achieve the award.

The programme adopts an evaluative and evidence-based approach to physiotherapy practice. You'll work collaboratively with students from other professional disciplines and be involved in peer assessment. A series of mandatory training events including basic life support and infection control will be timetabled over the two years.

Graduate destinations

You'll be qualified to work in a variety of NHS, education, private, voluntary and independent environments both in the UK and abroad. Some countries will require graduates to take an entry examination or assessment. Note: To obtain the MSc, students will usually take 9 months to gain the Postgraduate Diploma and then normally an additional 3 months of study to gain the MSc, from the date of commencement of the project.

UWS School of Science and Sport academics are experts in their field, many with international profiles in science, health and sport and experience with organisations such as the Olympic and Commonwealth bodies, the Scottish Football Association and the Welsh Rugby Union. We also work with a range of partners including Glasgow School of Sport, the Scottish Football Association and we have links with organisations such as Sport Scotland, BASES, UK Sport and many more.

First-class facilities

Our Institute for Clinical Exercise and Health Science provides the underpinning science for our sport programmes. Newly developed
facilities, spanning four floors of the Almada Building at Lanarkshire Campus, are equipped to carry out cutting-edge research and deliver state-of-the-art instruction.

Labs and learning areas include an exercise physiology laboratory, strength and conditioning laboratory, exercise biochemistry laboratory, blood analysis laboratory, EMG-ECGUltrasound laboratory, biomechanics laboratory, social psychology laboratory, a computer laboratory equipped with the latest in student research and learning software,
along with a traditional sports hall.

Students can have supervised access and experience with:

Become a qualified sport rehabilitator and open up new opportunities for your career. Our highly innovative programme is ideal for those from sport or health practitioner backgrounds, providing a blend of theoretical and practical experience to help you move into this specialist field. You'll have the opportunity to do over 400 hours of vocational placement, working with professional sports teams, sports injury clinics and health/fitness centres.

We offer the only course of its kind to be accredited by the British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT), including a foundation in the practice development skills vital to enhancing your professional development and career opportunities. You'll develop all the specific personal, professional and vocational skills, knowledge and experience to go into a successful career as a sport rehabilitator.

Course outlines

We allow Sport and Exercise Science and Sports Coaching students to develop additional vocational skills, knowledge and experience to complement their existing studies. As a Physiotherapy or Sports Therapy graduate, you will develop skills of critical enquiry, expertise in knowledge integration, data analysis and evaluation related to practice development. This will enhance your employment prospects and lead to big things in your career.

Students wishing to gain BASRaT membership must also accumulate 400+ hours of vocational experience as part of BASRaT requirements. These placements will be organised for you, and are likely to be in settings such as professional sports teams, sports injury clinics and health/fitness centres.

Graduate destinations

You will have the key skills, knowledge, and experience to work in the field of prevention, assessment and management of sports-related injuries. This programme is accredited by the British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT), so you'll be eligible for membership as a graduate sport rehabilitator.

Your qualification will help you find work in sports injury clinics, health clubs, professional sporting clubs, fitness centres, exercise remedial instructors in Ministry of Defence, rehabilitation units, massage clinics or within the NHS or GP referral schemes. You could even set up your own sports injury clinic.
