The LLM in Tax Law provides a comprehensive programme of study in tax law. It is designed to equip lawyers for the substantive, procedural and technical aspects of tax practice, and to expand and deepen the knowledge base of established practitioners, but no previous knowledge of taxation is required. Modules cover Business Taxation, International Taxation, EU Tax Law, VAT, Intellectual Property taxation, Taxation Principles and Policy and US Taxation. They are taught by leading academic and practitioners, with a strong practical emphasis.

You will have the opportunity to take part in the annual events organised by Queen Mary tax law academics, such as the London Alumni International Tax conference, the Avoir Fiscal Anniversary EU Tax Conference, the EU Tax Students Conference, Berlin Conference on EU and International Tax and the Summer Tax Programme, as well as workshops and seminars focusing on topical issues and current legislation. In Stage 3, you will present a written research proposal for submission. This will normally form the basis for the Masters level dissertation. You will work independently but under tutorial supervision, to undertake the research and prepare the dissertation.

Format

One of the unique online study features of this course is its flexibility, so that you can learn at your own pace and at times to suit you. Study options are:

•Online distance learning, full-time fast track mode. This is suitable for those not engaged in full-time employment OR for professionals who are willing to reduce their working commitment to part-time while studying for the degree.

•Part-time distance learning mode for those wishing to study and continue working full-time.

•Full-time on campus.

The course is taught at Aberdeen Business school full-time on campus and online by distance learning or can be studied part-time (for online distance learning ONLY).

Online students will study through the university's virtual learning environment (VLE) CampusMoodle. Campus Moodle has a number of functions, ranging from a repository for lecture support material to video clips of guest speakers, and discussion forums. The availability of parallel MSc and MA degrees in Banking and Finance allows you to choose between registering for a more technical MSc degree (including a compulsory element in Financial Econometrics), and a less technical MA degree (for which Financial Econometrics is optional). The MSc degree may be more suitable for applicants with some previous background in mathematics, statistics or econometrics, while the MA degree is more suitable for applicants who prefer to adopt a predominantly non-quantitative approach to their studies. The major strength of this programme is that students study within an operational ISO 17025 accredited forensic toxicology laboratory and are taught by practising forensic toxicologists. This programme is designed to provide students with an understanding of the evolution of thinking and practice in international development over the last fifty to sixty years.

The core module aims to familiarise students with key concepts (eg development and poverty) and theories (eg modernisation, dependency, neo-liberalism and the ‘crisis’ in development theory) and with the changing roles of international development organisations and states in promoting international development (eg through aid, trade and fiscal, monetary and social policies).

The emphasis throughout will be on encouraging students to reflect critically on what has worked well or not and why. Students will select five optional modules (at 20 credits each) based on their individual interests and career aspirations.

The second part focuses on the role of the capital market in providing Islamic financing, and highlights financial engineering and risk management features of this type of business.

Financial Modelling: This module develops a combined theoretical and practical approach to mathematical modelling for specialists in finance. The module emphasises numerical methods and other analytic approaches to financial modelling.

Financial Institutions Strategic Management: This module examines the main theoretical and practical issues concerning banking business. You will develop a critical awareness of the theory of the banking firm, the motives for international banking, and regulatory and structural issues impacting on bank behaviour.

Financial Crises and Bank Regulation: This module examines why banks and financial markets are inherently vulnerable to crises, and analyses the role of policy makers and institutions. The roles of monetary policy, bank supervision and regulation, corporate governance and ratings agencies in mitigating or exacerbating crises are considered.

Contemporary Issues in Management: This module develops several theories and concepts in contemporary management theory and practice. It provides a detailed and critical analysis of management, further developing the conceptual, strategic and practical skills necessary for managers in complex, global organisational contexts.

Islamic Banking*: This module provides an insight into the key features of Islamic banking business. The first part of the course outlines the theoretical foundations and development of Islamic banking practices. In particular, the main characteristics of various types of Islamic banking products are discussed. The second part of the course examines the operational features of Islamic banks, focusing on their performance and how they compete with conventional interest-based banks. The final part of the course outlines contemporary challenges to Islamic banking business.

The programme synergizes the expertise in political science and public administration of the faculty to develop an interdisciplinary approach in training students to address the challenges of governance, public administration and international relations in the national and regional context. The programme focuses on the fundamental principles, practices and techniques of organisational management related to public institutions. It expose students to relevant theories, and their applications in multidisciplinary fields. The emphasis is on linking theory to research, problem solving skills, as well as professional analysis of a wide range of issues in the areas of policy analysis, public sector management, urban planning design and urban development.



ENTRY REQUIREMENT

A Bachelor degree with a minimum of CGPA 3.0 or equivalent and sufficient knowledge of public administration or relevant fields.
