The MA Fine Arts degree programme will enable you to develop and locate your practice in relation to current bodies of knowledge and practice in the fine arts. You will build a strong and increasingly confident practice through awareness and interaction with current contexts of professional practice and research.

Course detail

The curriculum, which also supports awards at Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma levels, is uniquely designed and focused on developing artists’ abilities and capacities for professional, vocational and academic innovation. We emphasise relationships between composition, reflection, practice and dissemination across a dynamic breadth of fine arts disciplines and discourses. Teaching, learning and research on the programme will enable discovery of the variety of ways in which composition, creation and dissemination in fine arts practice has evolved into its present media and forms.

This degree enables students who already have some experience of fine arts practice to expand their artistic horizons, develop their reflective abilities and expand their portfolio as thinking practitioners.

Format

You will follow two strands, consisting of two 40 credit modules is designed to enhance your abilities as a self-reflective practitioner. It recognises the deep interrelationship between reflection, documentation, dissemination and production, in terms of the development of an artist’s work and practice in terms of its function and operation within critical and public domains. You will be introduced to the variety of ways in which composition, creation and dissemination in the production of fine arts practice has evolved into its present media and forms. This will be accompanied by investigation into the potential of strategies concerning documentation as useful modes of reflection and realisation. This module strand will be primarily focused around your own practice, contextualised by examination of various key practitioners, modes or epistemologies.

Modules

- Questions of Practice -

This is a practice-based module that encourages you to think and reflect through development of studio practice and discovery of related questions of practice. It recognises critical and creative reflection on studio practice as an active and essential aspect of working processes. It aims also to guide you in the development and enhancement of your conceptual, intellectual, practical and technical range of abilities, skills and knowledge in relation to models and strategies of making and reflecting upon current fine arts practice.

- Practice in Context -

This module encourages you to develop a nascent body of practice-based work in response to issues of context. Where work in ‘Questions of Practice’ encourages speculative approaches to studio practice, this module asks you to identify and respond to any of a range of historical, social and cultural contexts. This could range from re-examining approaches to site-specific practice, the ‘white cube’ gallery space, or networked, online spaces. The module allows time and opportunity for you to develop and enhance your conceptual, intellectual, practical and technical range of abilities, skills and knowledge in relation to issues and opportunities of making/disseminating practice-based research in fine arts practice.

The Master of Arts in Contemporary Arts Practice is a multidisciplinary degree course for artists from the visual arts, the Performance arts, music and literature. Its starting point is the student’s individual approach and choice of emphases; together with interdisciplinary projects it enables multidisciplinary exchanges with students and teaching staff from other disciplines.

The course aims to foster an independent artistic outlook within a framework of collective and interdisciplinary working interrelationships. The course of study sharpens students’ individual artistic practices through direct engagement with other artistic strategies. A knowledge of current discourse in other art forms causes their view of their own work to change.

Degree Structure

The Master’s degree comprises 120 ECTS credit points and is usually completed in four semesters. The degree is structured into three degree modules.

The degree places independent study and teaching, disciplinary foundations and transdisciplinary expansion in a balanced relationship. At the heart of the Master’s degree is artistic production, which includes an MA project in one of the specialisations. The didactic combination of one-to-one lessons with a high proportion of independent study, the targeted consolidation of technical and theoretical knowledge of the subject and context in elective courses, and the exchange between peers and professionals in various networks and in the joint Master’s fora support artistic production. Since in today’s artworld there is almost no generally binding canon of knowledge and skills, perfecting one’s art rests on individual decisions based on a wide-ranging knowledge of the dynamic state of the art.

Module Groups

Artistic Production/Master's Thesis (70 ECTS)
At the core of the programme, is the students' independent work on their own projects. This individual work is supervised by a personal mentor in one-to-one tuition. Students develop a deep understanding of their own authorship. They learn to present their work and to confront their own creativity with the strategies and approaches of other artists. In this endeavour, they are supported by numerous artistic personalities from the different departments of the BUA, as well as from the Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz in Basel and from further partner institutions in an international network.

Transdisciplinarity: Individuality in Context (30 ECTS)
The transdisciplinary aspect of the studies is largely based on the study of other genres' strategies of artistic authorship and by the search for common parameters for content and structure.
In lectures and seminars on contemporary art theory and media studies, common terminology is developed to facilitate communication about artistic strategies and production procedures beyond the limits of each discipline's specific vocabulary. The exchange among the different specialisations of the CAP occurs within the framework of tuition as well as in the interdisciplinary projects, but primarily in the common theory blocks, in the encounters with mentors from other disciplines and in the thematic project weeks that take place once per semester. Here, there are talks and practical workshops, transdisciplinary meetings, discussions, project and work presentations as well as courses on research strategies and scientific work. These block events not only heighten the understanding of one's own and unfamiliar working processes, they also prepare students for their professional future, when large projects will be realised in specialised artistic collectives and networks, which must be able to communicate across their fields' boundaries.

There is also tuition beyond the subject's artistic boundaries - on professional skills in economic terms. Students gain a basic understanding of how to set up a company and how to conduct self-promotion. This includes tuition about management, administration, law and copyright, marketing, project management etc.

Subject-related Theory and Practice (20 ECTS)
The third module group addresses the theory and practice of the respective specialisations. This includes courses on technical specialisation and perfection (for instance: composition, musical strategies, specific software knowledge, lighting, curating, exhibiting) and on the subject-related theory (for instance: lectures and guest seminars on contemporary art/music; graduate societies) as well as excursions and encounters with artists, institutions, clients, teachers etc. The various courses are open to all students of the MA CAP and the partner institutions, if they meet the individual course's requirements.

The degree programme culminates in the Master thesis. This consists of the public presentation of an independent artistic creation and the written reflection on the student's own practice. The written part can be conducted as a research project. Content and form of the artistic presentation, reflectiveness and relevance are evaluated by external experts.

Specialisations

Fine Arts
In the Fine Arts specialisation current developments in art and the historical foundations of art are the reference for students’ work. Static and moving pictures in analogue or digital form, sculpture and installation techniques are options as much as conceptual and performative approaches or the treatment of social processes and documentary strategies. The course is notable for its strong engagement with the professional demands of sound, words and performative production. The Fine Arts specialisation collaborates closely with the Master of Fine Arts at the Academy of Art and Design Basel (HGK Basel). Students have a broad range of options from which to assemble the content of their studies according to their own needs. These are extended by the BUA’s membership in the Swiss Master of Fine Arts Network. The discipline-related foundations for the Fine Arts specialisation are generally laid by a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts.

Music and Media Art
In this programme the main focus is on sound art, experimental and electronic music. Students develop compositions, sound installations or other sound-based art forms. In seminars and lectures exemplary works of sound art from the past and present are discussed and analyzed. We teach compositional strategies and approach the subject matter from a contemporary and historical-theoretical point of view. Reference to one's own work is a key focus. The aim is not to solely work on the development of one's own artistic practices, but also to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of contemporary compositions and art forms. In addition to the MA CAP program students can attend other courses, which teach practical skills in programming with Max MSP,hardware hacking, audio technology or interface handling. The integration of sound and musical aspects into areas like performance art, literature and fine arts has increasingly gained importance over the last decades. Hence, this study program intensively deals with the musical-sound aspects of different art forms. In the MA CAP the interaction between the visual, performative, literary and sound aspects, brings students from different artistic areas together, encourages exchange and enables collaborative working.

Literary Writing/Translation
Literature reacts to other arts, just as much as it influences them. Students hoping to practice their literary art in the field of tension of contemporary art production and its advanced reflection, find in the CAP a wide range of teachers and students with diverse backgrounds. Alongside this vibrant exchange and proximity, they work on their own texts of all genres, under the supervision of mentors. This constitutes the core of the students` individual study profiles. Something unique about the CAP is, that the work of the literary translators (with the source languages German, French, Spanish, Italian, English and Russian and the target languages German or French) is regarded as artistic production. The offers for translators are expanded thanks to a cooperation with the "Centre de la Traduction Littéraire" at the University of Lausanne.

Performance
In the sense of physical presence, real or conceptual action, performance occurs in various artistic fields. It addresses certain issues relating to body, space and time. Considering the transdisciplinary history of performance, we understand it as a varied and open field of general performativity.
Performance is regarded as part of all the different artistic disciplines united under the umbrella of the CAP.
As an active form and physical action, it resides within music, fine arts and also literary writing and occurs in close connection with these separate forms. In addition, the focus on performativity opens up new forms of representation, viewing and listening, participating, which the studies are supposed to explore in the practical work as well as in the theoretical reflection.

The M.F.A. in Design for Theatre is an intensive graduate program intended to prepare students for design in the professional theatre in Canada. The Program can accommodate very few students, and admission is competitive.

Instruction in the M.F.A. Design for Theatre program centres around a core of studio classes emphasizing development of the designers' graphic, conceptual, and research skills. In addition, Design for Theatre students may assist faculty and other practicing designers on projects outside the University, design theatre productions at UBC and elsewhere, and work in film. The program generally takes two or three years to complete, and culminates in a design thesis/theses.

The M.F.A. Directing program is a professionally-oriented intensive graduate program, intended for those who wish to extend and enhance their directing practice. The Directing program can accommodate very few students, and admission is competitive.

MFA, Visual Arts

The Master of Fine Arts Program at the University of Windsor is a two-year, studio-centered program geared towards creative exploration, innovative experimentation and the development of a sustainable artistic practice. The program provides graduate students with a critical and theoretical framework that enables the independent development of artistic research and studio production that is supported by a range of dynamic faculty, visiting artists, curators and critics. Windsor’s School of Creative Arts | Visual Arts has one of the longest running MFA programs in Canada, founded in 1979. University of Windsor MFA graduates have gone on to establish significant careers as visual artists, educators, curators and arts professionals.

Our program is distinguished for its focus on intensive graduate supervision, spacious facilities and openness to unconventional practices. We encourage a multi-disciplinary approach to art that enables students to experiment with a variety of media and methods to discover those best suited to realizing their creative projects. Recently these have ranged from video installation, audio responsive installation, performance, social practice, bio art, and urban intervention.

MFA, Film and Media Arts

The School of Creative Arts also offers an MFA in Film and Media Arts program. The MFA programs at the University of Windsor’s, are intensively studio-based programs that stress individual attention and the development of professional practice in contemporary visual art. The objective of the MFA program is to produce artists that are self-critical and culturally aware, capable of engaging in the contemporary art world independently and self-reliantly both in terms of technical abilities and expanding professional opportunities encountered beyond the university context. The work of the graduate students encompasses a broad range of practices, aesthetic issues, personal concerns and technical means. Program Structure

Facilities

All full-time Visual Arts students are provided with a large individual workspace in the Edward James Studios. In addition to specialist spaces dedicated to Painting and Drawing, Sculpture and Tapestry and Textile-based work, the studios also include Seminar Room, a materials and tool store, a small photographic darkroom, bookable exhibition and research spaces, plus an IT suite with digital editing software. A self-contained Print Room offers specialist facilities for etching, aquatint, monoprinting, woodblock and linocut. Students can work on a large-scale in the Sculpture Courtyard, which is also suitable for work in stone carving.

Students are encouraged to collaborate with other College departments - particularly the full-time programmes in the School of Conservation - making the most of the wide range of specialist knowledge, materials and equipment that is available. The Short Course programme also allows students to access a wide range of visiting tutors and specialist techniques that can further enhance their studies.

West Dean House and Estate offers students access to ambitious exhibition opportunities and unique research material. Students are able to submit site-specific proposals throughout the year and are encouraged to take part in the annual Open House event. The Edward James Collection is an outstanding resource for full-time students, given them access to a range of significant, even iconic, works of art as an ongoing source of inspiration and research.

The College's Arts and Conservation Library gives students access to thousands of specialist books, journals and databases to support their studies.

The Main House also contains West Dean Tapestry Studio, one of the world's leading producers of hand-woven tapestry. As well as having close contact with the expertise of Master Weavers and designers, students have access to the studio's Dye Rooms, a specialist facility for the dyeing of yarn. Introduction

This specialist degree provides a high status and professional qualification suitable for graduates wishing to enter the museum profession in Australia or overseas as curators, exhibition organisers or researchers. The degree is run in collaboration with the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery on the University campus, providing students with direct experience in curatorial research and exhibition presentation in the context of a first-rate modern art gallery.

Course description, features and facilities

Students in this course prepare either a fully researched proposal for a major exhibition (at least 5000 words) and a fully publishable professional catalogue including an essay on all works proposed for exhibition (at least another 25,000 words); or a dissertation (at least 30,000 words) on an aspect of museology relevant to curatorial practice; or a detailed publishable catalogue raisonné (up to 30,000 words) of the works of an uncatalogued artist.

Students also complete a placement in a public gallery and prepare a detailed comparative report (up to 5000 words) in relation to this placement.

Structure

3. A student must—

(a) present for examination one of the following:

(i) VISA8602 Exhibition Proposal comprising a fully researched proposal for a major exhibition, of at least 5000 words, the content and title of which are proposed by the student and determined by the Board; and VISA8601 Exhibition Catalogue comprising a fully publishable professional catalogue including an essay on all works proposed for exhibition equivalent to at least another 25,000 words; or

(ii) VISA8603 MCur Dissertation comprising a dissertation of at least 30,000 words on an aspect of museology relevant to curatorial practice, the title and subject matter of which must be proposed by the student and have the approval of the Board of the Graduate Research School; or

(iii) VISA8604 Catalogue comprising a detailed publishable catalogue raisonné of up to 30,000 words of the works of an uncatalogued artist;

and

(b)(i) complete VISA8605 MCur Placement comprising a placement in a public gallery or comparable institution involving at least one day a week for 36 weeks during the course; and

(ii) prepare a detailed comparative report of up to 5000 words in relation to the placement described in (i);

and

(c) complete VISA8606 Advanced Curatorial Studies comprising such advanced study in relation to curatorial studies as may be required by the Board.

4.(1) A full-time student must submit to the Board for approval within four months of the date of first enrolment in the program, or the equivalent as determined by the Board if the enrolment is part-time or a mixture of full- and part-time, the details of the following components of the course:

(a)(i) VISA8602 Exhibition Proposal; and
(ii) VISA8601 Exhibition Catalogue;

or

(b) VISA8603 MCur Dissertation;

or

(c) VISA8604 Catalogue Raisonné.

The approval of the Board is required for any significant changes to the details submitted under (1).

Students are required to work in at least three separate genres during the course of their degree – literary cross-training that makes our graduates more well-rounded writers and opens more doors for teaching and publication.

Study full-time or part-time

You can take up to five years to complete your degree, taking as little as one course per year if that’s all your schedule will allow.

Summer Residency

The residencies anchor the online courses, bringing students and faculty together at the beautiful Vancouver campus of UBC each July for ten days of workshops, seminars and community. The residencies are great experiences, but they are entirely optional. Some students complete their entire degree at a distance.

Workshops Online

The workshop format is at the core of the study of creative writing; online workshop critique is a powerful way for students to learn critical reading and writing skills and to make connections with other writers that will last beyond your time in school.
At the end of it all, you will emerge with a body of work in at least three different genres as well as your thesis, a book-length manuscript (or full length production) of your original creative work.

The MFA program is dedicated to helping students understand both the making and theorizing of art against the background of the diverse intellectual environment of a major university, and within the context of local and international art communities. The MFA degree is also the standard qualifying degree for teaching visual arts at the post secondary level. Most students are given the opportunity to teach foundation courses as Teaching Assistants, thus providing them valuable experience in visual arts instruction.

Students in the program may work in any area of contemporary art production including painting, drawing, printmaking, three-dimensional and installation work, photography, digital art, intermedia, video, performance, sound, or in any interdisciplinary form. The program does not include training in applied art, commercial art and design, graphic design, film or television.

Each MFA student receives his/her own private studio (approximately 250 square feet) and access to the department's extensive facilities including a state-of-the art Photo/Digital lab, Printmaking unit, and Workshop. MFAs participate in an intensive weekly studio seminar that is also a forum for critical discussions about leading issues in contemporary art, visual culture, and cultural theory. Students take additional academic coursework to enrich their particular focus, and present their Major Paper research and artwork to peers, faculty, and the public at their final oral presentation (occurring in the spring of their final year) and at a final critique (occurring during their graduation exhibition). Open Studios, interdepartmental critiques, and organised exhibitions showcase the students' art production and broaden their exposure to the local art scene and beyond.

MFA in Creative Writing

The University of Tampa Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing is a low-residency program designed to help poets, fiction writers and creative nonfiction writers advance their command of craft through exposure to literature from a writerly perspective and with supportive critique and mentoring. The course of individualized study covers four semesters over two calendar years, followed by a fifth culminating residency. Our program focuses on individualized instruction, while fostering the rich interplay of participation in an extended literary community; as working writers, all of us seek to deepen the understanding of writing as an ongoing engagement with discovery and transformation.

Students attend four, 10-day working residencies on UT’s historic campus in downtown Tampa, on the banks of the Hillsborough River. Each residency is followed by a semester-long one-on-one tutorial with a faculty mentor focused on the student’s written work and readings as negotiated in an individual plan of study. As part of the requirements for the degree, the student completes many drafts and revisions, resulting in the master's thesis, a substantial manuscript of original work in the selected genre. Along the way, the student reads and comments on works that have shaped the genre, completes a 25-page critical essay in the third semester and assembles an annotated bibliography that conveys the importance and influence of great writers on their own work. In the fifth, culminating residency, the student teaches a seminar on a pre-arranged topic of interest and gives a public reading of his/her own work. Each semester grade is pass/fail accompanied by a narrative evaluation composed by the student’s mentor. All students have the opportunity to serve in an editorial capacity on Tampa Review Online, the 100 percent MFA student-edited cousin of the award-winning Tampa Review.

This postgraduate MFA course is a taught degree, with lots of hands-on teaching and learning in workshop, studios and seminars, shaping your work towards practical and commercial outcomes as a professional practitioner.

You have access to great facilities throughout the year. At London Met we are famous for our specialist workshops: photography darkrooms, metalwork and woodwork workshops, ceramics room, printmaking studio, digital imaging equipment, textiles and sewing equipment, 3D printing and laser-cutting, photography resources, video and film editing facilities, a camera equipment hire shop and sound recording studios.

You‘ll learn to propose, research, develop and execute a master’s level project to the highest possible professional standards. You establish the framework of a professional practice: how to self-organise your practice in the world to achieve reputation and success.

There is a School wide, intensively marketed London PG Diploma exhibition at the University in June where you curate and showcase your work.

Finally, you test yourself in one of a series of group projects briefed by London art organisations and design companies. You work together with fellow postgraduates all summer to meet the requirements of the professional commission.

Assessment

Full-time students will be assessed at up to three points in a year. Assessment will be by coursework only, with components that are measured for: subject knowledge; analysis; problem-solving and experimentation; management of own learning and personal professional development; skills in professional practice (CV, website, social media and communications); exhibition skills, production and installation; project skills, the production of online project documentation (including an online evaluative report, online project proposal and annotated research material) and two finished projects (Major Project and Collaborative Commission). Marking criteria are published to students. The assessors provide written online feedback on each assessment component at each assessment point in a standard template.

Modular structure

The course structure is designed to be completed in one year (two years if taken part-time). The modules all serve to create a major project exhibited in June, before a final summer spent entirely on a collaborative professional commission, briefed by an arts organisation or design company and undertaken in working group.

Throughout the year, students gain a variety of insights into the art or design worlds via guest lecturers from a wide range of public and private sector organisations, as well as case study reviews, workshops, exhibitions, events and site visits across London and further afield.

After the course

You can use this MFA as a qualification in establishing yourself as a professional, self-employed artist or designer. To do so, you must go on to use the experience gained in the qualification to self-organise and network to win contracts, commissions and shows. We have a professional practice and networking module designed to help you learn exactly for this purpose.

Or you can use the MFA qualification to gain work at major employers in the art and design sector such as Artsadmin, Pentagram, the Tate, the Royal Academy, Tom Dixon, Arts Council England, Heatherwick’s, the Venice Biennale, Sotheby’s or Conrans.

Alternatively, you can use the MFA to go on to study for an art and design PhD, an entry qualification that helps you get into a Higher Education art or design career, to teach and research anywhere in the world.

As a smaller program with high calibre students, the MFA in New Media encompasses a strong theoretical and practical foundation in areas related to faculty research interests.
